This was very, very helpful for a not-very-handy 67-year-old who is tired of paying repair people. I got through about 11 minutes and I was able to resolve my problem with the mower not working. I hope to remember to return to this, if I have trouble again.
Wow! I can't thank you enough! As another 67 year old, I came so close to loading my mower up and bringing it to the repair shop. I was doing my last mow of the season and my mower just stopped. I checked the battery, took my air compressor and blew it all off (not sure if that did anything, but ???) I even called 2 repair shops. Then I remembered how helpful UA-cam is and low and behold your video showed up. It was the HANDLES! I unlocked them and slid them up and down a bit, then locked back into place and WOLLLAAAA!!! It worked. Finished up my yard, cleaned it all up and going to the garden shed until next spring. Again, THANK you for doing this video!
I was pulling my mower backwards and the handle hit my neighbor's retaining wall and it shut off. I just pulled the handle back out all the way. Voila, it worked.
Fantastic! What a time saver in troubleshooting my mower. I put it away running, three weeks later (California) go to mow and nothing! I went straight to the wires in that folding handle elbow and sure enough, in the smaller wiring harness I found the red wire almost cut in half. The insulation around the three wires is shrunk to fit and difficult to strip back so be careful not to damage the other wires. I made the repair and tried to route the wires in a more non-abrasive manner, even coating the area with silicon past to reduce the folding friction. I took some photos, but guess you can't add them in the comments. Thanks so much for the video.
Thank you so much! Mower died. Couldn’t find anyone to fix it. (Buy a new mower, they said). Lawn turning into a hay field. Oh, what to do? And then I found you. I bypassed the relay (under the hood) and, Eureka! the mower lives again. Only mystery is the spring and small plastic part that fell out when I took off the cover on the side rail to check that relay. (I couldn’t figure out how to fit them back in). Sure wish I knew what they did but, oh well, the mower runs just fine without them. So, thank you again. You’ve made me one happy, empowered 76-year-old lady.
I've had my mower for 5 years now. Last time I started it, it started with no problem and I took a few steps and then it stopped. I started it again, took a few steps, and it stopped again. Then it wouldn't start at all. I made sure the battery was seated correctly, that didn't help. The light on top the battery was green. But since I couldn't figure out what was wrong I put it on the charger . It went thru the charging, I took it and put it back in the mower, it didn't start. This time I noticed that the yellow light on the mower would blink and then shut off. I just wanted to say that I was so close to paying out 300 bucks for a new battery before I watched your video. In your video when you did the part about the handle , it made me remember that a couple years ago my mower wouldn't start and it was because the handle clip was not on tight on one side. So I just went back outside and sure enough one side wasn't clipped on tight. I fixed that and mowed my lawn. So sometimes it's the simplest things that can be causing the problem. And your video helped me get mowing again. Thank you !
Thanks so much. While close ups would have been helpful, I'm thrilled that after following your first couple steps my lawn mower was running again. I've told my kids not to store it with the handle folded over anymore as well because I don't want the cords in the lower arm area to fray as u described. That's a great tip to prolong the Longevity of the mower wires. I'd gone to a repair shop this morning to find they only repair gas. Thays when I searched for a troubleshooting vid. U saved the day. THANKS AGAIN.
This video helped me find the issue with my mower. The handle angle relay was jammed - after a quick vacuum and re-seating, it's working again. Thank you so much!
I panicked this afternoon when the mower wouldn't start. I knew the battery was fine. Luckily I found this video right away and was reminded if the handle isn't fully extended the power won't flow. Sure enough, I had forgotten to secure one side of the middle of the handle and it started right up. Excellent video - many thanks!
Thank you for your video. A close-up view of how you were doing the repairs would have been very helpful. Looks to me like pinched wires are a design flaw, as it happens when the mower is folded for storage. This issue will be costly to fix after the warranty runs out unless the mower is stored without folding the handles, which defeats the purpose of buying a "compact mower" to save on space!
Thank you so much! You helped me fix my problem in just a few minutes. One of the green center clips had caught on something and came unsnapped mid-mow and I didn't even notice. I never realized they needed to be fully extended so the mower would run. You are awesome! Thanks again!
Brilliant, I've got the same Ego mower, some pandanus fronds got wrapped around the blades so I took the battery out to unwind them and then the mower would not start. I pulled the handle right out & reseated the handle clips and it worked fine, you saved my day :)
Sir - Your issue mirrored mine - a pinched wired when the handles are not fully extended. Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but regardless, it is something us EGO mower owners need to be aware of . Thanks so much for taking the time & effort to create this video.
Nice vid! Mine stopped working, but the handle made the green light go on the battery, so I knew it wasn't a connection issue. Turns out one of those green tabs in the middle of the push bar was open, guess that breaks the circuit!
Cool. So I just have to utilize my electrical engineering degree to fix poorly designed, easily anticipated electrical wiring problems with my Ego mower. I’m not saying these kinds of mowers need to be perfect, but it’s a little annoying when something like this ‘breaks’ when it could have been easily avoided if it was designed a little better. Great job, Ego.
I am impressed by his knowledge and ability to explain the issues in terms I can understand. Not sure I'll try the rewiring part myself, but really good to know where/why my mower broke. I do think that if he is going to be barefoot while demonstrating with a mower blade rotating that he should at least have a comment "shoes recommended while working around rotating blades" or something about safety! haha!
I had the problem of the blade not starting to spin (self propelled always worked no matter what). Finally, I tried releasing the clips on the handle, pushing it all the way down into the portion of the handle attached to the mower, then pulled it all the way back out and locked it. Doing this fixed the problem and it starts every single time (when you do those steps each time). I'm going to guess that Ego thinks everyone is going to fold up and hang their lawnmower on the wall. I have no interest in that and simply roll it in and store it like I did my gas mower. I will say this stupid problem and an extremely expensive lawnmower was a huge disappointment, but thankfully the solution was as stupid as the problem they created. This is why I'm hesitant to buy much of anything anymore. No matter how much you pay for it (never buy the cheapest stuff, always at least mid level prices) the products produced now never seem to NOT disappoint! I hope this helps some of you.
Thanks so much for your video. I have not tried to repair my EGO 56 Volt mower yet, but I am very handy where things like this are involved. I have never found anything I couldn't do yet. There are many things I can't do, but I just haven't found it yet.
Informative video. I had the no start problem. Didn’t realize there was the handle relay (#2 in the video). Went back out to check and found the handle had come unlatched causing the relay side to slide in slightly. Pulled handle out and relatched. Problem solved. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this video! It saved me a bunch of headaches as I had no idea about the really in the middle of the handle. It turned out my handle latch hadn’t closed all the way. Problem solved!
Thanks for your calm demeanor. It cooled me down and almost the first thing you said put me on the correct track. Push the start button before pulling back the lever🤣. I was doing the opposite. Hey, it’s the first cut this spring.
I have a newer EGO mower (2135SP). The mower blades would randomly stop while using the mower. It seemed that the slightest movement of the handle would cause the safety switch to stop the blades. In most cases, I could restart the mower by pulling up on the handle and starting the mower normally. Finally, I became annoyed with having to do this. With the newer models, the configuration of the safety switch is different. There is no spring. I opened the plastic components on the handle which houses the safety switch. There are several TORX screws holding the components together, so an appropriately sized TORX screwdriver is needed. The switch is configured as a Normally Closed (NC) switch. When the handle is not in the fully up position, the switch opens, and the blades stop. I first thought of removing the switch and permanently connecting the two wires together. I then opted for another solution in case I wanted to easily remove my modification. The switch has an unused Normally Open (NO) terminal. I used a small piece of wire to connect the NC and the NO terminals together. This basically causes the switch to have no function. I reassembled the mower and now everything works great without interruptions. Of course this removes one of the safety components of the mower. Be aware that the handle will not have to be fully extended to start the blades. I enjoy all the EGO mower videos on UA-cam. I only wish more videos for the newer models were available.
Thanks for the pointers, very helpful. To others coming across this video I want to say this mower is no way worth the money. Besides this problem I've had to buy a second battery after only using the first battery for one season. Besides not lasting for my 15000 sq foot lawn it also stops pushing the grass into the bag well before it actually stops so you end up with droppings on the lawn. This means you have to switch out the battery even before it actually is out of charge. I'm sorry I bought this mower and would not recommend it to anyone. Assuming it makes it through the summer, I'm done with EGO and will sadly go back to a gas mower next year.
Well, it could be worth the price for some folks. Just to offer a contrasting experience: I have used my ego 21” mower for 7 seasons now, I’m still on the original battery, and have not needed to make any repairs or replacements. My lawn is only about half the size of yours, and I cut it all on a single charge.
Sorry you had a bad experience with the battery. A friend told me to store my battery in a cool place (the air conditioned house) rather than in the garage which seems to help with battery life. And to bring it into the house in really cold weather (winter) so that the battery doesn't experience temperature extremes
I will have to disagree with this. Your battery is under warranty for longer than a year, for one thing. In my opinion it's nice to have two batteries though. I use the grass catcher every time and when it gets close to full, you have to empty it or it will act like a mulcher instead. My mower cuts the lawn as well as a gas mower and I haven't had to do any maintenance. I've had my Ego mower for 8 years and my 5ah battery stopped working as well in year 5. I bought an Ego 16" chainsaw with a 5ah battery, 3 years ago and use that newer battery in my mower instead. It is an upgraded battery over my original, but the og battery still works as a back up to finish my lawn, while I put the other one on the charger. I have used the newer battery for 3 years and it still works really well. I've been keeping my batteries in my garage or shed, which do get hot and cold but are dry (but humid in summer) and shaded. I know batteries are expensive, so I would recommend getting one with another tool, like a blower or a chainsaw.
I've been using mine for 3 years now to cut 4 acres of meadow and it's great other than the fact that it now doesn't start. No complaints at all on the cutting ability though.
Your video was very helpful. My ego runs fine, but the self-propelled functional won’t work. I am guessing I need to go through the same testing procedure that you did for the starte problem unless you have any thoughts
This happened to me and I'm not an electrician. Not mentioned in this video is the bottom was completely bogged down with compounded grass. Spent a good 30 minutes cleaning it (NO BATTERY INSTALLED) and it started right up.
Simple and easy to do. My handles were not all the way extended then clipped on. Its brand new and first day of using it and these simp[le electrical checks worked for me. I thank you for making this video.
My issue was pretty similar to yours but ended up being where the wire that runs down the arms connected to, the connector had a loose wire so I put it back in there and hot glued it. It's amazing how crappy these things are for 800 bucks. should've got a commercial gas mower.
Yo yo wutup B-Lev...WOOOOH! The relay in that doesn't work when the handle is not fully extended was my problem. As Darth Vader might say, "All too easy." Thank you!
Really enjoy seeing your process, thank you for uploading! I have an ego mower that will try to spin upon starting, but won't fully start. Where would you start in the troubleshooting process? I just uploaded a video of what im experiencing in case you or anyone else might be able to assist. Thank you!
edit July 5: I disassembled my 2130SP (brushless mower) today and confirmed what I wrote below. There are NO relays in either the 2100 (in this video) or my model, the 2130. There are only lever operated micro-switches (more like mini), one used in the telescoping handle, and one in the upper handle (pushbutton and swing bar) and one used in the power body attached to the lower handle such that when the handle is stowed in the full forward position it engages preventing the mower from starting accidentally. So there's 3 total switches used and no relays. All are used for purposes of implementing "safety" interlock modes. July 3: Umm, good video, however what you term "relays" are actually called "interlock switches" or simply interlocks in short form. I am an EE and we use interlocks in electrical engineering for numerous things. I have not taken mine apart yet but am looking at various videos to lessen the hassle but these minor things caught my attention.
My mower wouldn't start. I took the bottom cover off like you showed. A mouse promptly ran out. Some wires are chewed. I am pissed. I bought this mower new, I'm a single mom, I have no idea how to fix this. Mice have chewed wires in my pickup and now the air doesnt work. Every year its a battle! I kicked the damn mouse & its dead, so at least there is that. Have to take the mower in now & I am BROKE already! I'm so frustrated!
Great video. This happened to me when I went to use mine for only the second time. Luckily Lowe’s did an even exchange for a new one. I will keep this video in mind going forward. I wonder if anything can be done by us owners to 11:19 prevent this from hhappening
Thanks for your informative video. I have had bad switches in the arms/handles and the lower pivot point where you jumper around this permissive switch. I love my EGO mowers(all 3) but they have had some issues with the safety switches....so thanks very much for the video.
What you call a relay is actually a switch. A relay is electrically actuated and makes or breaks a contact or set of contacts. A switch is mechanically actuated and makes or breaks a contact or a set of contacts.
Some big bone stuck under it, so it did not start with yellow light blinking. After removed the big bone, my Ego works now hoping this info helps other people.
Mine was from a small switch at the bottom of the lever that wasn't getting depressed when clicking it into position. Held in a plastic housing that warps over time causing slop.
That’s all well and good, my problem is getting the cover off. What kind screws, Phillips head or some kind of weird screw I don’t have screw driver for. The screws are so deep set I can’t see the head. I hate this mower!!!!
Interesting video. Are those relays or switches? There is not much difference. A switch makes a connection when it's pressed (2 or 3 wires). A relay makes a connection when an electrical voltage is supplied (usually 4 or more wires). Both physically move a connector, but the relay typically uses a coil to create a magnet, and that magnet moves the internal connector.
Boom!! My blade only engages when I hold the handle in the 12 o'clock position. makes me look like a dork when I am mowing!! That relay or wires must be the problem. THANKS
Thanks for the informative video. Can someone save me some/frustration with my Ego LM1700E-SP mower, please? Seems to be similar to the one in this video. It was working fine - last used a couple of weeks ago. The battery is fully charged but the blade motor does not operate this morning. The battery and the mower green lights show on, but the motor fails to spin. However the machine drives forward as normal. I have tried it several times, checking the handles are fully extended etc. Where should I look next? As I say, it’s only the blade motor that’s failing to work and I wonder if that suggests where I need to look first. The blade spins very freely when rotated by hand.
5 years seems to be the sweet spot for this issue. Safety features are dumb. I used power grips to fix the dumb to by pass the kill switch. They should have just used a wire cable to pull a lever like gas mowers.
Can you please answer a question for me? I am getting 27 volts on the main start relay at the top of the handle, should all 56 volts be going thru the relay? I know the battery is good and can't find a wiring diagram online anywhere.
My mower won't start. Just hear a "clicking" sound from the motor area. Hope it's not that relay. This looks like more trouble than it is worth. Only had this mower 1 year. I will try and check the circuitry and hope I can find what is wrong. Yesterday it worked fine!!! Today nada. I have folded this mower up at most 3 times. Can't believe that the wires are bad.
Remember to save your receipts AND register your EGO products on line with model and serial numbers. It will save you so much time if you have problems. Thanks for your great video. 😀
Thank you for your video, it helped, I just didnt pull my handle bar out far enough, Im saving your video just incase another problem comes. Thanks again.
So basically, to lessen the risk of this happening, just don't fold it up it sounds? I keep mine extended when stored away because I have enough room in the shed to do so.
well, having my second problem. It went to Ace Hardware at the end of last season, and now, fully charged battery and it won't start AGAIN. Frustrated AF. When it was repaired, I was told it had something to do with folding the handle down over and over. Guess what, it's designed to do that for easy storage !!!!! Back to Ace Hardware. Hopefully the warranty covers it again. WTF
Hopefully it works out for you. I stopped folding mine unless I’m storing it for the winter. My new wires should hold up better, but it’s definitely a design flaw.
I have a flashing yellow light at the top of the handle. Motor seems to get a shot of power, blade moves just a a small Jerky movement. Battery works in the leaf blower. Any ideas
Hi TJ. I wish that I had the answer for you, but our mower has the same problem as yours. Any chance that you have found the cause yet? I've been checking the wires and tried a jumper to skip some of the safety switches, to no avail.
Thanks for taking the time to post this vid, it got me back up and running with little effort. Call EGO and of course I never registered my machine and they wanted the original numbers to the battery that came with the unit that I no longer had. Wow, it's customer service until it's not. You have a new happy subscriber, can't wait to see your other vids to see what all you can help others with.
I hate my ego I wish I never bought it. Now I have to mow 2 times a week and it does not mulch correctly. It makes thatch. Keep your gas as long as you can.
I think it’s because they don’t cut as low a conventional gas mower. My wife has a Kobalt and it don’t cut low enough with the deck all the way down. I personally think this is how they get the battery to last on a charge because if you cut the same high as I do with my gas mower the electric motor would be in more of a bind. I have been a small engine mechanic for 40 years and my personal thoughts are they are tinker toys. I own one because it’s easy for my wife to operate no gas or oil. But after 2 days it don’t look like she cut at all. Just my 2 cents
It's powered by Chinesium, not working is perfectly normal. It will fail precisely at one year and one month since it will be out of the standard one year Chinese warranty by that time.
You might have taken something like a straw when you had that apart and took a heating gun I ended up having to weed eat the last five times that Mallard got done he took a lot lot longer
Appreciate your video . . . but it just irritates the hell outta me that you pay $5-600 for a lawnmower and after a few uses you gotta know how to take the damn thing apart and go thru all this. I know a lot of people like to figure things out and are proud to be able to fix them. Then . . there are folks like me who have NO curiosity or techy skills and just expect an expensive electric device to work as it was designed
This was very, very helpful for a not-very-handy 67-year-old who is tired of paying repair people. I got through about 11 minutes and I was able to resolve my problem with the mower not working. I hope to remember to return to this, if I have trouble again.

This video helped me find the issue with my mower. The handle angle relay was jammed - after a quick vacuum and re-seating, it's working again. Thank you so much!
Really liked how well you explained each problem, then each potential problem, then how to resolve each of the problems! Awesome. Thank you.

A very helpful video. Shows what to look at next when you've checked all the more obvious possibilities.
Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you! Mine stopped working this week. I just fixed it today. It had the same exact problem.

How do you get to the third switch? What type of screw driver? I can’t seem to get in.
Oh boy, I don’t remember off hand and my mower is 5000 miles away. It might have been a star wrench if a Phillips head doesn’t work
Big help.... Pinched wire here as well, mower is running again. thank you!
I have a newer EGO mower (2135SP). The mower blades would randomly stop while using the mower. It seemed that the slightest movement of the handle would cause the safety switch to stop the blades.
@@BuckeyeNutUG yep, after the last fall mow I charge the battery and bring it into the house until next spring.
Thank you Al. I wish I had seen this prior to disposing of my first one. Now second one doing same thing. I will investigate issue using your advice.
You are 100% correct Al. It was the exact issue that you had. Thank you.
This happened to me and I'm not an electrician. Not mentioned in this video is the bottom was completely bogged down with compounded grass. Spent a good 30 minutes cleaning it (NO BATTERY INSTALLED) and it started right up.
Good tip!!!
Thanks for the video. This (the wiring in the arm flex) is exactly what is wrong with my new ego mower. I’m just worried about working with wires.
Glad it was an easy one! Cheers!
July 3:
Umm, good video, however what you term "relays" are actually called "interlock switches" or simply interlocks in short form. I am an EE and we use interlocks in electrical engineering for numerous things. I have not taken mine apart yet but am looking at various videos to lessen the hassle but these minor things caught my attention.
Yes, appreciate the correction.
One of my side rails was opened and slightly lowered! That was it! Fixed! Thank you
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much! I didn't have the handle extended enough
Did you ever make the video about removing the spring ? I could not find one
Thanks for your informative video. I have had bad switches in the arms/handles and the lower pivot point where you jumper around this permissive switch. I love my EGO mowers(all 3) but they have had some issues with the safety switches....so thanks very much for the video.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for you video man, you saved me to buy another.
What you call a relay is actually a switch. A relay is electrically actuated and makes or breaks a contact or set of contacts. A switch is mechanically actuated and makes or breaks a contact or a set of contacts.
Haha, I know, and I said it so many times in that video.
Thanks for the great video. One question. Can you show how to put the cover back on. It came off easily. Its not going back on :(.
Folding relay may not be seated and in your way.
Some big bone stuck under it, so it did not start with yellow light blinking. After removed the big bone, my Ego works now hoping this info helps other people.
Thanks for this. I fixed mine with your help.
I believe they are actually switches. I unfortunately kept calling them relays, but you are right.
Mine is the 2nd relay. i have to fidget around with the extension for it to kick on and off.
Exactly what was wrong with my Ego. Thank you!
Thank you! Had it figured out in 5 mins.
What type of screws did you remove to take off the cover (hex or phillips)? Does it require a specific tool/bit/extension?
Boom!! My blade only engages when I hold the handle in the 12 o'clock position. makes me look like a dork when I am mowing!!
That relay or wires must be the problem. THANKS
Thank you I was able to fixed my POS lawnmower thanks to you 😅
Boom. Super helpful. 1 second fix!
This happen to me after first cut. Not acceptable for the price
Can you please answer a question for me? I am getting 27 volts on the main start relay at the top of the handle, should all 56 volts be going thru the relay? I know the battery is good and can't find a wiring diagram online anywhere.
Oh goodness I cannot wait till daylight I have got to try this I have a feeling it might be that relay
So helpful! We got it to work with your help. Thank you!!!
I will now check the relay/wire harness in the base. Thanks!
thanks for this video. just helped me fix my mower!
Glad I could help!
Thank you for your video, it helped, I just didnt pull my handle bar out far enough, Im saving your video just incase another problem comes. Thanks again.
Glad it helped
Great video! Had EXACTLY the same failure.
These are really great mowers.
Man you're the best!!! You saved me. Thanks
That’s awesome, so glad to hear it helped!
Thanks for sharing this video. This helps us all
Glad it was helpful!
So basically, to lessen the risk of this happening, just don't fold it up it sounds? I keep mine extended when stored away because I have enough room in the shed to do so.
My lever is stuck and will not fold. How do you fix this
Great video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
This is helped for me. Thank you
well, having my second problem.
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful.
Does anyone have a link to a schematic showing the electrical wiring?
Thank you. got my problem solved.
This helped me thank you!
I've been checking the wires and tried a jumper to skip some of the safety switches, to no avail.
great video..its working now!
Thanks so much for your help 🙏
Thanks!
What toolz do you need?
We can't remove the case to check the part relay you show. Deep screws.
Thank man it’s works
I hate my ego I wish I never bought it. Now I have to mow 2 times a week and it does not mulch correctly. It makes thatch. Keep your gas as long as you can.
Why do you have to mow twice because of an electric mower? Does it cause your grass to grow quicker?
I think it’s because they don’t cut as low a conventional gas mower. My wife has a Kobalt and it don’t cut low enough with the deck all the way down. I personally think this is how they get the battery to last on a charge because if you cut the same high as I do with my gas mower the electric motor would be in more of a bind. I have been a small engine mechanic for 40 years and my personal thoughts are they are tinker toys. I own one because it’s easy for my wife to operate no gas or oil. But after 2 days it don’t look like she cut at all. Just my 2 cents
@@jasonmelancon8096that's nonsense. You can clearly see the height the mower is set to. Do you know how to adjust it?
@@MitchellEarl I have been working on mowers for 40 years. I know how to adjust the height. The EGO may be fine but the Kobalt is crap!
My mower starts, the blade is loose enough but doesn't engage.
Thank you ❤❤
Got mine in January, 3 months ago... and I'm troubleshooting it.. pretty lame.
That’s a great idea (the straw). Any extra layer of protection there would help
mine wouldnt start, not because it was broken. but because i forgot to lock the handle all the way back
Appreciate your video . . . but it just irritates the hell outta me that you pay $5-600 for a lawnmower and after a few uses you gotta know how to take the damn thing apart and go thru all this. I know a lot of people like to figure things out and are proud to be able to fix them. Then . . there are folks like me who have NO curiosity or techy skills and just expect an expensive electric device to work as it was designed
