  • Quick video showing the replacement of an upper control arm on a GMC Acadia. At 54K miles I had to replace the front sway bar bushings, sway bar links, front struts, and finally the rear upper control arms. Hope this helps anyone that runs into the same problems I did.

Thank you for the video, I think we both have the same issues with our vehicles. We just spent a lot of time and money replacement for the front end parts and now I get to the rear and low and behold same issues that you have. I'm sorry I have such an addiction to Buick or If trade this in.

My 2009 has become a disaster on roads as I would be better off with horse and wagon . I changed all 4 sway bar links and front bushing it's did nothing so I'm thinking it's these rear control arms like yours . I'm goin rip the back tires off tomorrow and take load off with frame on jack stands I'm hoping this is the issue as this ride needs to be used for out of state travel soon and it's my only Transportation. Thank u for your video very very informative.

my dad and I just spent the whole day doing this job. be prepared...it is a big job. make sure to mark your bolts and washers so that you can get your alignment close. also be prepared to go buy all new upper control arm bolts. the upper control arm bolt is the same part # as the lateral arms (the bolts that go through the adjustment washers) they are $32....each. through GM. we needed all 4 of them. ours rusted to the bushings and we had to cut them out with a metal blade and also with a torch. if you live in a state with rust then be ready to buy these bolts because we were unable to reuse our adjustment bolts. everything else we were able to reuse. good luck and have fun. I won't be doing it again. if it ever needs it again a mechanic will be getting a call.

Alan Bush we just finished the front end of the Buick and I crawled under the passenger side rear and the spring looks asquew so I'll be doing the entire rear now too if my eccentric bolts aren't rusted out do I still have to replace them?

Was it hard to remove the bolt
I am having the same issues in the rear upper control arm but I heard it’s a hard job.

Best way to check is raise vehicle and grab top and bottom of tire. I did and I found the problem.

Here's how I removed the inner bolt, which was very stubborn until I figured this out:
    1. Spray everything with penetrating oil.
    2. Remove both nuts and cam washers. Hold bolt with 10mm socket as needed. Pop the washers off with a screwdriver.
    3. Put some washers or nuts that slide easily on the bolt end with the 10 mm hex end. Leave just enough room for the nut and a 10 mm socket on the end.
    4. Put the nut on that end back on somewhat tight.
    5. Hold the nut with a 21 mm wrench and turn the bolt counter-clockwise with a socket. This will pull the bolt out.
-When the nut gets to the end of the threads, the bolt won't turn any more.
    6. Take the nut back off and add additional washers or nuts; as many as will fit.
    7. Repeat step 5. This should be enough for the bolt to be completely out or be pulled out by hand.
Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna try this. I can't get this frikin thing off. I took both nuts and washers off and the double sided bolt just keeps spinning on there. I'll definitely try your idea

I also had to replace the rearward lateral link along with the upper control arm link on the same side as I found it to be just as loose. Both bushings felt soft like a marshmallow. After an alignment, struts, shocks and tires it rides like a new car now. Would be nice to actually see how you went about taking the part out and putting the new one on and the tools you needed to do the job. Nice video though.

I'm purchasing a vehicle that has both rear upoer control arms loose, rh frontstrut leaking/busted. They insisted it's not something I should be worried about so much and I could be done later on. But I'm not really sure about that. I'm asking for anyone's opinion here. What do you think?
    Its a 2011 GMC Acadia.

Did you have a sway in back of the vehicle when you drove it before. My wife's 2009 feels like it's on ice and wants to stay back and fourth.

Why did you change the whole control arm and not just the bushings?

Corey Parks im about to do mine. its 20 just for the bushing and on ebay its was 43 for whole control arm. i just bought the whole control arm figured it would be better just to change both bushings out.

Did you use oem or aftermarket? Oem are really expensive. Mine is at 81k miles so looks like oem are junk and don't last.

I used aftermarket. I don't remember from where though. I think Rock Auto.

just wanted to know if you can tell me how much you have to take off to get the control arms off?

    • @Duckdogbob
      @Duckdogbob  8 років тому +1

Just the wheel. The bolts can be a little tricky to get out, but didn't require any special tools. You should probably have a 4 wheel alignment done after the job is completed.

+Duckdogbob ok thank you. one more question about how long did it take you? I'm pretty handy but just trying to figure out how long it should take me?

I don't recall the number of hours, but I completed both sides in one day.
