This movie is brilliant. She was naive (well she was so young and him so old) but she was brave and honest with herself in the end. Love her character and love the actress !
My father told me that a man (particularly over the age of 25) interested in young ladies *under the age of 18* didn’t have anything significant going for them. The guy I met at 16 was much older. I thought my world would end without him. At 18, I decided to go to college, out of state. I was supposed to meet him in Las Vegas during my spring break. He wanted to get married, but I wasn’t ready. I discovered that my dad was absolutely right. My life would have been filled with heartache and pain. He ended up getting married and having kids. Although he was married, friends would tell me that he wanted to see me, his marriage was a mistake. One day, I saw him with his daughter. He told his daughter that I should have been her mother. Why would you tell that to your child? It was a brief encounter, but an affirmation that he definitely wasn’t the man I thought he was. I dodged a bullet.
it's so heartbreaking this scene...where from anger...she goes into begging and pleading...which shows the real source of any anger...being hurt....she's hurting...she's so sweet and beautiful...
Sixteen year olds always feel like they know everything. Trust me, I’ve had my own dose of reality. The secret is to ensure that we all learn from our mistakes and others’ mistakes as well.
1:55 He always does that. She storms out of the car because she finds out he steals paintings, he says something like 'don't be so bourgeois, you're better than that'. Right now, she confronts him about being married he says 'don't be like this' and brings up 'you seemed so happy and I was happy'. in the alternate ending when he tries to talk to her again he says 'don't be unkind' and also says 'and you had fun'. He continuously makes her feel bad for her feelings and moral beliefs every time she calls him out for his behaviour, makes it seem like it's her fault for reacting badly to his actions and that she has no right to complain because she 'had fun'. He's awful. He's totally grooming her - when not acting like she's older to make it 'ok' that they slept together when she was 17 and he was nearly twice her age, then acting like she's being immature because of her reactions to things he does wrong.
Whenever he is confronted about something negative that she discovers about him he always turns it around on her as if to say "you had a choice"....or..."you made the decision"....or...."you enjoyed it", a classic manipulator / gaslighter move on his part. What most victims realise (after the fact) is that a person doesn't have to utter a lie to be considered a liar, one can also lie by omission, which is exactly what David did to Jenny.
Broke up with my boyfriend three days ago (the one I introduced to my parents and thought was the right one). I came to watch this because I learnt yesterday he already had someone else...someone who came way before than me (which made me the lover). I wanted to watch this to understand that this kind of things do happen and there are cruel people out there. I also introduced him to my family, to my friends, took him into consideration when planning my own future. Just like in this movie, he was so good at lying and handling a double life.
OMG, you just wrote what happened to me too, every single word, it was like one month ago. I understand you complety, we both were hurt by someone that was the last person we would imagine to do such a monstrous thing.
@@dayprintes Hi! Thanks for your support. Just to update you, today the other girl wrote me because she discovered he had a third girl...who came even before both of us. We just exchanged the truth with each other and man...it's so hard to discover that guy was a psycho.
@@blancagomez2981 A player perhaps, but not necessarily a psycho. Let's keep perspective her. I know you're hurting (or were 10 months ago) but Hitler was a psycho not your playboy - unless there's something more you're not sharing?
I was the gf. He's 30 and his side piece is 21. She didn't want to leave him. She'll find out the hard way. I felt bad for her at first, because he played her too but now I have no sympathy for her. She should've been horrified by what he did and dumped him on the spot
Funny how Jenny's story ended up being like the one of jane from Jane Eyre, the book she's been studying. her English teacher refers to David euphemistically as "her Mr Rochester" but unlike jane, she doesn't go back to him. Good on her!
I remember at the time this was released I fell in love with a man many years my senior. My surgeon and ultimately my colleague for a while. When I was young (a couple of years difference between Jenny and I), I became obsessed with this film, and wished part of the story would happen to me. Sadly, I experienced both halves of the story. Not with my surgeon, as I dreamed. But another older man. "Be careful what you wish for" resonated a lot after this. There is so much more I could say. Big film, close to the heart and bone for me!
That bastard!!!!! I love this movie, what he did to her was awful, so glad Jenny got over it and got to live her life again... That's how it should be 😪😪😪😪
Actually, the woman, who wrote this memoir (Lynn Barber) who based this story on her own experience never completely got over it. Still finds it hard to trust people to this day and she's in her 60's. Stuff like this can majorly damage a person for life!!
In these situations, often the wife knows but turns a blind eye; both wife & philandering husband continue to live together but live separate lives because neither can afford to move out. That's how the philanderer's lies are allowed to perpetuate. Add to this that the philanderer and girlfriend live far from each other and she is unwilling/unable to travel to his side of town. These situations happen more frequently than people think.
Ugh. These situations are hopeless. Best to just drop the person immediately and start to heal yourself from the shock, rejection and humiliation - that person didn't actually exist. Tell me when you learn how to do this, though!
The dropping is easy. The healing though... The thing is, we all know how to do it. Or rather, we don't have to know how to do it; it hapoens on its own, but only very slowly. Like any grave wound, it hurts terribly for a long time and there's no way to dull the pain but wait. If you're going through this kind of pain, I can say from experience that while it feels like you just want to lie down and die, it really does get easier, but only with time.

This was so heartbreaking. So sick of such perverts taking advantage of naive girls
Oh well. What do you think "naive" girls are attracted to? Do you not think he provided what she wanted as in any relationship.

You see the Jenny character grow up in the end. Carey Mulligan was superb in this film. I love Sandra Bullock but she has Carey's Oscar.
Sandra bullock got the compensation award. she shouldve won for gravity not for blind side.
