It's been so much fun to see how my style and abilities have changed with time! Of all the patterns I showed in this video, which one is your favorite? 🤔
Blue flowers, I love flowers and blue though! I like the white, I think that would sell as material for bed sheets. I'm just looking into all this surface design, you are an inspiration for sure!! I can draw but not educated in painting, I love watercolor, any suggestions?? Thank you!!!!
@@broo7188 thank you!! 🫶🏼 when I first started with watercolor I watched a bunch of UA-cam tutorials to learn basic techniques (Allison Lyon Art and Jenna Rainey are both great!), but the majority of my learning just came from playing around with paint. I’m still playing, and still learning!
Photoshop is much more organic, I prefer that look. What was the person you did a workshop with on Skillshare please with Kat? for the Octopus? I love those giraffes.
I think the baked goods ones would look great scaled down on an apron or kitchen towel set! They looked great! The updated jellyfish pattern definitely made me go oooooooo lol, that’s my fav!
Aahh thank you so much!! Maybe I should revisit that pattern and play with it again 🤔 You might be right -- maybe there's potential there! So glad you love the updated jellies 🫶
I love your abstract fish pattern. It looks stunning and would make a great fabric design for a dress or home decor. The motifs look like floral fish to me--so pretty and lush. Nice color scheme as well.
Thanks, Anastasia!! I used to shy away from bright colors so much, but I was so pleased with how that one came together. I love the idea of a dress using that fabric!! 🐠
What a great video! I did Bonnie’s Immersion course back when Covid hit. Well. I started it, then we realised the house was submerging and one corner needed to be lifted, and that took about 6 months to clear the room, take stuff to a storage shed etc, and by then I was back at work, which was devastating. So, 3 years later, I’m getting back on track, still a newbie, and I have bought Affinity Designer 2 (and also own Affinity Colour), because I own it outright and won’t have expensive monthly payments. So I’m learning that as I go too. Loved seeing your progress! Thankyou! I’ve just started Stacie Bloomfield’s ‘Leverage Your Art’ and am going at a snail’s pace, but it’s now or never. And I’m so excited to continue.
Oh my, I’m so sorry to hear about your house! That sounds like a lot to handle. I’m all about working at your own pace, so I’m glad you’ve been able to come back to the surface design world in your own time 🫶🏼 Thank you for your kind words!! And that’s so fun you’re taking Leverage Your Art. It looks great!
Hi Sarah, I just found your channel and am so excited! I have recently started my own journey into surface pattern design (I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist by day) and I love this video! All of the people I follow are already successful working professionals in the field and it’s refreshing to “meet” someone who is only a few months ahead of where I am. Thanks so much for sharing!
Woohoo, that’s exactly my goal with this channel!! I love following the folks who have been doing this for a long time, but I think it’s also really helpful to see the nitty gritty that comes with getting started. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment! 🫶🏼
OMG!!! From your first pattern….my jaw DROPPED with the second floral. It’s gorgeous and I would wallpaper it for sure!!! I love the colors you chose in it. It’s my fave of all of them. Also, the larger ice cream cone scale is better than had they been small. However, it is really just two different looks depending on what you’d use it for. I’m a fan. Please keep sharing the progress and inspiration!
I thought the baguettes did look cool, the linear version it self could be a baggy over shirt -that draws curiosity! I love how you improved the jellies too. Your 7mo progress really rang a bell for me. Surface patterns have been entering and leaving my path for last 6 years as a job but it wasn’t something I’ve tried to pursue alone as an artist. Seeing a progressive video like this motivates me to even try repeat prints with my imperfect rookie motifs, so no need to start from scratch. Thank you for sharing your process. Wishing you the best 🎉
I really like the latest blue floral pattern on the black. I love that you are documenting your surface pattern design journey. Thanks for sharing & keep showing up! 👏
Thank you, Kimberly!! I was so pleasantly surprised with how that dark background really helped the flowers pop 🌸. I’m trying to post a video every week, so I’ll be back before you know it!!
I can definitely see your style coming through more and more as you progress and this really motivated me to keep going! The wobbly mushrooms are my fave :)
I can't believe you painted those mushrooms with your non-dominate hand!! I had to pause just to comment on how wonderful it looks - like the colors and textures, it'd make a wonderful piece of apparel. It's crazy I was just getting into surface pattern design a few months back but lost some steam for it recently. I'm so use to using adobe illustrator and vectors everyday i forget photoshop is just as viable.. I took a Bonnie Christine skillshare class as a start - would you mind recommending some skillshare surface pattern course? Also thank you for sharing such a great timeline of progress - it's amazing to see how far you've gone in just a few months! I really adore that beta fish pattern - your style grew into something very lush. 🥰
Thank you, Linda!! I’m so glad you love the mushrooms - I was amazed by how well they turned out!! I think I need to make some more left-handed patterns 🤔. I totally recommend that technique to anyone who wants to create looser artwork and stop overthinking things! I think Bonnie’s skillshare courses are a great starting place! If you want to step into the Photoshop world of surface pattern design, I really do recommend Cat Coquillette’s class (it’s called something like “Seamless Repeat in Photoshop” or something along those lines haha). It opened up a world of possibilities for me. Thanks for taking the time to write this lovely comment 🥰
Really admire your strength and bravery as you can put whatever you think should be patterns on the designs. No fear, no comparison, just do it! That's the potential to become designer! Just let go. You will get there! ❤❤
Awww, thank you so much!! That's so kind of you to say. Comparison really is the thief of joy, so I do try to avoid it whenever possible... easier said than done sometimes! But I like to just run with my own inspiration and figure out ways to make my visions a reality. I appreciate you for taking the time out of your day to write this!

This is super cool! I recently got it in my head that I'd like to learn how to make patterns/surface designs, and seeing your process is really inspiring! I have no idea where to start though, haha.
You should! But be warned… it’s addicting 😅😆 I just wrapped up a tutorial series showing how you can make patterns in Photoshop if that’s something you’re interested in! If you’re more drawn to the vector based artwork, I’d keep an eye out for Bonnie Christine’s free five-day course that got me started! Last year it came out in November 🤔. If you’re on skillshare, there are also a ton of great resources there! I particularly love Mel Armstrong. The most important thing is that you just start! And please do reach out with any questions. I’m no pro, but I have learned a lot in the past (almost) year!
@@mic6074 that’s so awesome!! I mean, as you saw in this video, my first patterns were not particularly beautiful either 😅 but it’s just so magical when you make that first seamless repeat! I’m cheering you on! 🥳
Hi Sarah, it's amazing how have you progressed. I started in beginning of April and my best ones look still faaaar away from your "not satisfactory" ones that you made in the beginning. I wish I had more time to actually be able to have space to systematically work on it... Well hopefully I will get better by time, just much more slowly
Hey Karolina, thank you for your kind words 🥰. And try not to compare your work to mine - we’re all on our own totally unique journeys!! Also, for what it’s worth, it gets a lot faster and easier with time. My patterns used to take me houurrrsss and hours to make, but now that I have a good number under my belt, they come together a lot more quickly. So, all of the slow, painful work at the beginning will definitely pay off with time!
Great job! I like all of your patterns especially the watercolor flowers as well as monochromatic ones. Question, do you use photoshop for this and did you teach yourself photoshop if so? I am one of Bonnie's alumni 2023 and I like to watch your journey! Thanks for your video!
Thanks for your kind words!! I did use Photoshop for these :) I learned a lot from Skillshare classes, but a lot of it was just poking around on my own, too!
this was lovely - thank you! since you are using photoshop and it is raster based, do you habe a certain DPI you stick with? would pattern creation be viable through procreate as well (thinking primarily about blowing up pixel-based images onto large items like duvets). Thanks again for all the insight :-)
Yes! I usually scan my artwork at 600dpi and I build my patterns using a 300dpi canvas 🙌🏼 I actually have a whole tutorial series on my channel about how I use Photoshop to make patterns (it’s basically a free course), so feel free to check that out for all the details 😄 Also, I just got my first iPad (just posted a video about it a few weeks ago!) and you can DEFINITELY make patterns in procreate! It’s super fun! Some people will design the motifs in procreate and then build the pattern in Photoshop (check out Mel Armstrong’s channel to see this in action), but you can also totally build the whole thing in Procreate 👍🏼
Great video… I’m interested about the comment you got regarding non directional prints. I hadn’t really thought about that for clothing. I’m really drawn to geometric shapes and long lines so I’m wondering now if any of my designs will work 😢
I definitely think they’ll work!! I follow plenty of artists who are very successful and mostly make one directional prints, so it totally can be done. And I feel like geometric prints and lines are soooo versatile. Plus, it’s not like clothing is the only thing that patterns are used on! So, don’t be discouraged. I’m sure there’s the perfect place for your patterns just waiting for you!
I too follow Bonnie and Cat coquellete. Can you attach the skillshare class of Cat Coquette that you had taken? I am unable to get how to transfer the hand drawn motifs into the digital and then how to transfer them to a fabric. Can you help me with that?
Hi! I totally recommend it! Here it is: Cat Coquillette's Skilshare course: www.skillshare.com/en/classes/Watercolor-a-Seamless-Pattern-Surface-Design-in-Adobe-Photoshop-for-Print-On-Demand/1054728/projects?via=custom-lists
Awww thank you!! The technical stuff just takes some practice. I was a total beginner to all of this stuff when I started, but if I figured it out I know you can too!! Skillshare was an awesome resource for me when I was first getting started (and I still use it alllll the time)
How do you transfer your paintings into vectors/images?? do you use a scanner, could I know the specifications of the kinds of tools used?? Thank you for this video it is extremely helpful.
Hey Tonia! So I rarely actually use vectors - I’m a raster girl! But you’re in luck because I actually have a whole series on my UA-cam channel about my general method for creating repeating patterns. The very first video has my tips for scanning, and includes an overview of my supplies 🫶🏼 TUTORIAL: Watercolor to seamless pattern ua-cam.com/play/PLQzGeBcbs7NruJwdFxtn_USCCiq4XcVgZ.html
I'd love to know how to do the abstract patterns in photoshop, or even the yellow filler patterns. Any skillshare vlasses you can recommend. Your progress is astounding and your paintings are wonderful. So talented
Thanks, Helen! 🫶🏼 That technique I actually kind of cobbled together and unfortunately don’t have a class recommendation for that one, but I was thinking I could put together my own tutorial one of these days if that’s something you’d be interested in! That said, I do really recommend Cat Coquilette’s class on creating a seamless repeat in photoshop to get the ball rolling. You’ll learn soooo many of the essential techniques in that class. Thank you for your kind words 🥰
@@TutuWells thank you, Aris!! 🫶🏼 Yes, it’s called “Watercolor a Seamless Pattern: Surface Design in Adobe Photoshop for Print on Demand”. Totally recommend it!
Hi! Just found your channel and subscribed. I am an absolute beginner (in the exploring phase) of surface pattern design. I've dabbled in Procreate but want to learn both Illustrator and Photoshop. Struggling to figure out which one to do first. I am on Skillshare and love CatCoq as well. Terrific progress and I adore your last floral that you showed. May I ask, where did you learn the Adobe programs?
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment, and for subscribing! And, welcome to the wonderful world of surface pattern design!! I was also a TOTAL beginner with the Adobe programs when I started around 1-1.5ish years ago at this point, so I feel ya. I'm glad to hear you're on Skillshare, because that's where I learned sooooo much of what I know. I would honestly recommend that you start with Mel Armstrong on Skillshare. She has a whole library of AMAZING classes that are specific to surface pattern design, and she uses all of the above (Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate). I've learned so much from her. Bonnie Christine also has some good (old, but not necessarily too outdated) classes on Illustrator on Skillshare. To be honest, my experience learning these programs has been that at the very begging they can be slow and frustrating to use because it truly is like learning a new language and you have no idea how to use them or what they are even capable of doing. But, once you get a solid understanding of the basic syntax of the program "languages" and a general feel for where things are, you'll start to be able to mess around and figure things out just by playing around on your own. Sorry for the absolute novel of a response 😅 but I hope it was a little helpful! Let me know if you have other questions 🥰
@@pepostudios Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. I did watch your vid on BC's class. Very, very helpful! I just can't decide!! I feel like I should learn photoshop first! I do like a more painterly look with my designs, but I also design things that would be suitable for Illustrator. The 2k is a big financial commitment and I feel like maybe I could spend that $$ to learn both, but it seems like a lot for just one course. Ugh! I will check out Mel Armstrong for sure. I think I am going to do a free trial of each program (separately)and pair it with a skillshare course to get a taste of each. Then maybe I can make a decision about BC. 🤷🏼♀I know I need to learn both ultimately, but I have to start somewhere!
@@pepostudios I'm joined with a couple of great resources that cost money but I've found it worth it. The US based textile design lab has lots of courses and a network of other surface pattern designers to chat with. But I live in the UK and have a hard time joining some of the live events so I joined Make it in Design which has a design school and lots of classes as well. Right now there is a winter design course where you do a project at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels and that's pretty fun. On skillshare, there's another excellent teacher, Bärbel Dressler she is a master at historic patterns and a wealth of knowledge. She has a great free trailing pattern course, but loads of others as well. Lisa Glanz also has many fun courses and I like her playful style. Skillshare has been an amazing resource.
Thank you, Linor! One of my favorites is Cat Coquillette's class, "Watercolor a Seamless Pattern: Surface Design in Adobe Photoshop for Print-On Demand" I also love Mel Armstrong's classes on Skillshare -- she has a ton of great options!
Thank you! I find inspiration everywhere. Sometimes it comes from things I see when I go on my daily walks after work, other times it’s just from things that have been on my mind a lot! (Like the orcas… I definitely didn’t see those on my walk 😂 but I had been thinking about them a lot!)
Ah, thanks for pointing this out!! It should be fixed now... here's the link! www.spoonflower.com/profiles/pepostudios I appreciate you for letting me know!
I want to make a plan to develop my drawing with flowers. Can you help me with that? I would be grateful to you. For example, every week. What should I do? I love flowers and making patterns from them? Currently considered lost
Good question! I also have a hard time with flowers sometimes because I find it difficult to remember all of their various shapes, so I often end up painting something that looks like a basic daisy if I don’t have a prior idea of what I’m painting 😅 something you might find useful is to do targeted flower studies each week, or however often makes sense for you. You could fill a whole page of your sketchbook with drawings of the same flower from lots of different angles. This works especially well if you have a real-life reference you can work with, but can also definitely work using photo references. I think it’s really good to learn about how to visualize flowers from alllll kinds of angles, not just top-down.
My very favorite surface pattern design courses have actually been on Skillshare! I love love pretty much every course by Mel Armstrong, and Cat Coquillette's course on watercolor to repeating patterns was such a massive game changer for me. I also took Bonnie Christine's Immersion course but ultimately had mixed feelings about it.
Yes! I usually scan my artwork at 600dpi and I build my patterns using a 300dpi canvas 🙌🏼 I actually have a whole tutorial series on my channel about how I use Photoshop to make patterns (it’s basically a free course), so feel free to check that out for all the details 😄
Also, I just got my first iPad (just posted a video about it a few weeks ago!) and you can DEFINITELY make patterns in procreate! It’s super fun! Some people will design the motifs in procreate and then build the pattern in Photoshop (check out Mel Armstrong’s channel to see this in action), but you can also totally build the whole thing in Procreate 👍🏼
Great job! Very inspiring
Thank you so much!! 🫶🏼
Can you help me with that?
this is so inspiring to see how much work you put together! could you write here the class on Skillshare that you took? Kat ...?thanks!
Cat Coquillette! Her Skillshare course is called “Watercolor a Seamless Pattern: Surface Design in Adobe Photoshop”. I totally recommend it!
Hi could you spell the name of the course you took that was a life changer? In the minute 11:51 thanks ❤
Hi! I totally recommend it! Here it is:

Very Cool!
Thanks so much!!
This is so inspiring! I have ideas but I'm very intimidated by the technical aspects 🥴
The very first video has my tips for scanning, and includes an overview of my supplies 🫶🏼 TUTORIAL: Watercolor to seamless pattern

@@pepostudios I love all you doing on this channel, I'm cheering for you!!!! This class from Cat is called Handpainted Seamless Pattern in Photoshop?
@@TutuWells thank you, Aris!! 🫶🏼 Yes, it’s called “Watercolor a Seamless Pattern: Surface Design in Adobe Photoshop for Print on Demand”. Totally recommend it!
@@pepostudiosthank you,!!!!!
It is ridiculously addictive isn't it? I spend hours of my day doing them.
It really is!! I love it so much!
Skillshare has been an amazing resource.
how did you learn
❤😊❤gracias
🫶🏼
this is incredible!! can you tell us which skillshare classes you watched while learning? 🤩
Thank you, Linor! One of my favorites is Cat Coquillette's class, "Watercolor a Seamless Pattern: Surface Design in Adobe Photoshop for Print-On Demand"
I also love Mel Armstrong's classes on Skillshare -- she has a ton of great options!
Where did you order the fabric with your custom print on it?
Spoonflower! I definitely recommend looking into it. It’s a great resource for designers.
Very nice work. Where do you get your ideas from?
Thank you! I find inspiration everywhere. Sometimes it comes from things I see when I go on my daily walks after work, other times it’s just from things that have been on my mind a lot! (Like the orcas… I definitely didn’t see those on my walk 😂 but I had been thinking about them a lot!)
@@pepostudios
Thank you✔️😂
Your spoonflower link doesn't go to your profile, just the spoonflower home page. ✌🏼
Ah, thanks for pointing this out!! It should be fixed now... here's the link! www.spoonflower.com/profiles/pepostudios
I appreciate you for letting me know!
@@pepostudios thank you so much
YO! That first pattern has Sexy 70’s written all over it. I dig it 😎👉👉
Though I totally understand that it’s not your style😋
HAH, you’re so right!! Groovy, right? 🕺🏻🪩💃🏻
How to monitize patterns😊
What courses did you take?
My very favorite surface pattern design courses have actually been on Skillshare! I love love pretty much every course by Mel Armstrong, and Cat Coquillette's course on watercolor to repeating patterns was such a massive game changer for me. I also took Bonnie Christine's Immersion course but ultimately had mixed feelings about it. I actually just posted a review of that course a few weeks ago on my channel, so feel check it out if you're interested in hearing more about that!
Can you share that free 5 days course?
I think Bonnie only makes it available once per year! Last year she posted it in November, so keep an eye out on her social media for that 👍🏼
PS: I love Dune :)))))
Ha, yes!!! You’re the first person to comment on my books!! Dune was a big commitment to read haha but sooo good 😊
@@pepostudios I’m happy I read it loooong before the movies 🥰🥰🥰 I’m actually rereading it now hihi
@@WeronikaSalach so fun!! I actually still haven’t seen any of the movie adaptations if you can believe that 🫣

Thanks so much!! It’s been such a fun skill to learn. Can’t wait to see what else I learn in the coming months!!
I'm really interested in this. How did you transfer paper painting to digital one? 🩷
