    Learning a few words of Vietnamese can bring loads of fun to travel in the country. The Vietnamese people are very receptive to foreigners who try to learn a few words of their language. In this, the first in a series of language classes for travellers, we cover some basic vocabulary and some of the challenges the language presents.

    I served in the Army in the Vietnam war and learned words that a medic would learn in order to treat the people, but i have forgotten them all, but i loved your teaching and the way you pronounce the words, you speak well. I love Vietnam and the people there.

    I'm Vietnamese and I have to say that your Vietnamese is excellent. Hardly do I see a foreigner speaks Vietnamese natually like you. Even Vietnamese people make lots of mistakes when speaking. For those who made negative comments, what is "standard Vietnamese"? I don't think there is an accent that you guys suppose it's standard. That's just so stupid and ignorant!

      I'm a Vietnamese live in US, and I love to learn my native language but The accent are so hard.

    • @danielvuongvo
      @danielvuongvo 8 років тому +2

      Hello Annabelle Le Vietnamese is a tonal language. For people who just start to learn Vietnamese, it's normal to say that it's so hard to pronounce exactly some words. Two words with different tone marks would have different meanings. For example, có which means have/get and cò which means the stork. Keep trying to learn Vietnamese and I hope you could speak it fluently one day!

      thanks, it would be embarrassed when I come home to Vietnam and couldn't speak The language properly. what will My family says then? Is it mất gốc? I will be go back to my mother birthplace next year for the first time, and I'm worried.

    I grow up in Vietnam and have been so critical about speaking/using Vietnamese. But I have to say your Vietnamese is adorably awesome :D I'm so happy to see a foreigner who is so passionate about our language. Please keep up the great work, and all the best :)

    I want to bring this up many times when I heard a foreigner say "xin chao" and consider it as a way of greeting in Vietnamese. It's true that it means Hello, but honestly, it is really hardly used in reality when Vietnamese greet each other. 'Xin chao' can be used as a way of greeting but bear in mind that it is only common for foreigners to say to natives not among natives, so I often name this phrase as UNNATURAL Vietnamese. In reality, in formal situation, it can be summed up in a formula like "Subject 1 CHÀO Subject 2 (S1 is the one who greet" The use of S1 and S2 is very complicated in terms of the fact that you have to consider the age and the gender of the person you want to greet. For example, if that person is female and younger, you say "chào em" (S1 is omitted here because S1 is older so there is no need to address him/herself). But if that person is female and older, you'll say "em chào chị", etc. In informal situation, among friends or people who are at the same age, or when the S1 is older than the S2, it is often said that: "Đi đâu đấy?" means "where are you going?" This is considered as a common way of greeting, I say this to my friends the whole time, but remember that this one doesn't require any answer like "I go to ...blah..blahh". You don't have to go into details with this, just reply by "Ừ, ra đây tý" (means: I go to this place) (this is used among people who are at the same age as yours; To people who is older, when they greet you with this question, you can reply "Dạ, cháu ra đây tý ạ" means "yes, I go to this place for a while". Well, it is quite difficult and complicated, I know but if you want to sound natural, you should be aware of this.

    Great video. One helpful tip, to address a man "chu" is for someone who seems to be younger than your father and "Bac" is someone seems to be older than your father. "Chao Chu" or "Chao Bac" = Hello. To address a woman "Co" is for younger than your father and "Bac" is for older than your father. "Chao co" or "Chao Bac" = Hello. Xin chao (formal) chao (informal) = Hello

    I watched this video literally 20+ times and want to thank you so much it was great to know a few words on my 16 day trip (north and south) from Australia.
    some tips for others -- The locals are very used to hello, and thank you (common for a tourist to know these) and whilst you will get by great and enjoy using these two words, I would highly recommend learning the others. the people in the south will respond much better to the southern versions than if you just learn the northern versions so its worth watching this video enough to learn both!
    There is nothing better than seeing the smile on the ladies face in market after hearing you say "mac qua"...it literally will pay you hundreds of thousands of dong to learn this :)
    Sometimes they will assume you know fluent Vietnamese and start talking to you in Vietnamese, I wish I knew how to say "I don't understand" at that point haha :)
    once again, Thanks so much Mark, this video works WAY better than any free App or book !!!
