    I might hold off until ZMK has a layout utility. I still have nightmares of pre QMK configurator, never mind VIA. I always had to ask someone to build keymaps for me, because I could not for the life of me get them working. I see CK also has the SAT 75 X later this year for not much more though, so I may try that out instead. My Poly Singa 75 could use a friend. :)

      Doesn't the Keychron web utility support ZMK? They are also getting in the ZMK game I thought.

    The price is very attractive and it´s a nice looking board. But the really small battery is just kind of silly IMO. I would just use it wired and not even bother installing the battery.

      The battery lasts over a month w/ normal use if you're not using the RGB. The firmware is very power efficient.

    Overall, I think that the board is a decent travel board, but it begins to suffer from a few shortcomings right from the design.
    Something I don't think a lot of folks mention is the placement of the RGB LEDs in relation to the bottom part of the case. There are two select spots where you can notice dimming, and this has to do with the placement of the daughterboard and the battery effectively blocking the LEDs. While the battery has some reflective material to compensate for its blockage of the LED, the same cannot be said of the daughterboard. All in all, this leads to a dim zone on the left hand side of the board on the front region.
    Something that could be done about the design is to have a dedicated channel for the battery to slot into such that it does not directly lie under the RGB LED and adjust the wire as necessary so it can connect to the PCB. And, to adjust the spacing of the LEDs to have two that surround the daughterboard instead of having the single LED lie directly above it. This may incur an additional cost of making an additional LED onto the PCB, but it heeds attention to detail and gives the product the finishing touches it should have had before being released.
    As for ZMK, I think that the lack of a GUI environment like VIA is a compromise that has to be made to allow for easier development of efficient firmware for wireless keyboards going forward, because QMK and its subrepositories were not designed nor coded with wireless in mind, which has made present solutions act janky. The ZMK software is built on Zephyr, which is an open-source movement that is backed by companies that are in the business of microcontrollers and wireless communications devices. With time, there should be a VIA implementation that uses ZMK; we just happen to be the early adopters :P

    Plan on getting this but was hoping for a stepped caps lock... my Bakeneko65 doesn't have it but easily good. It's not a deal breaker or anything but this looks like a good travel board even though it doesn't seem to come with a case or anything. I wish I could skip the stabs though will probably just use Durock. Nice review as always!

    A good keyboard held back by some not-so-good choices. The battery is tiny compared to basically every other wireless keyboard on the market, and while ZMK is better for wireless boards, it doesn't seem as user-friendly as VIA/VIAL, especially for people less familiar with that side of the hobby. Given this board seems to be targeted as people who want a simple and easy custom wireless keyboard experience, i feel like the easier to use VIA would have been more suitable. This is a non-issue if ZMK has similar functionality to VIA when the keyboard is shipping to customers, though.
    The tiny battery is not really acceptable though, almost all new wireless keyboards have at least 2000mAh batteries compared to the *200*mAh battery this has.

      I think it's time the hobby looked to advancements in the firmware side. The issues getting QMK/VIA updates integrated (and the underlying project for QMK) have been pretty well documented from what I've seen. ZMK doesn't seem all that difficult for anyone familiar with the hobby outside of basic "buy switches and assemble" which seems to be what so many people think this hobby is.
      To the battery, clearly they wanted to make the keyboard lightweight. Bigger battery, more weight. It's supposed to be light travel. If it actually lasts a month between charges then I don't see an issue. ZMK maybe makes that possible? Sort of unfair to take "previous experience" with non-ZMK boards and applying it to this. This is like arguing that an ARM (Apple M1, Snapdragon, etc) versus an x86 processor. Specs will look completely outclassed but the instruction set makes a massive difference.

      @@jgould30 To counter the claim of having a board to be light weight by having a ridiculous small battery that will probably run out in a day, I use to own the cheapo TES68 wireless only 65% with 2x AAA batteries and it still weighs in nearly the same as a basic ABS one piece construction wired 65% like the aging GK68X, which was already very light to bring around with.
      It just seems quite lazy to not at least redesign the bottom case for a cutout big enough to accomodate at least a 2000 MAH battery - which honestly isn't that big. Usually these batteries are flat and wide anyways.

    • @CannonKeysOfficial
      @CannonKeysOfficial 2 місяці тому +3

      @@Ray.F The 200 mAh battery will last 1+ months without RGB turned on. A smaller battery does result in a lighter weight, and we thought this weight reduction was best for an on-the-go board.

    It’s kind of funny that it’s an $80 board but CK has you sending it back to them after the review 😂
    Board is attractive overall with the pricing but the small battery is an issue since the slot for it doesn’t look very wide. I feel like that would restrict you to only a few choices of aftermarket battery as a replacement but I could be wrong.
