I am a 90s kid, who turned 30 last year. I’ve seen every conceivable weirdness on the internet, and I used to love watching postman pat as a kid. While that may have been ruined/improved by swearing dub-overs in the mid 000’s, that Ted “love doll” has got to be one of the most insidious things I’ve ever seen my life, and it’s creator needs to be “taken away”.

Guinea pig lore: It is a species of rodent belonging to the genus Cavia in the family Caviidae. Despite their common name, Guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they closely related biologically to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. They originated in the Andes of South America. Cavia porcellus is not found naturally in the wild, it is likely descended from closely related species of cavies, such as C. aperea and C. tschudii, which are still commonly found in various regions of South America
Regionally known as cuy, the guinea pig was first domesticated as early as 5000 BC for food by tribes in the Andes. The Moche people of ancient Peru worshipped animals and often depicted the guinea pig in their art. From about 1200 to the Spanish conquest in 1532, the indigenous peoples used selective breeding to develop many varieties of domestic guinea pigs, which formed the basis for some of the modern domestic breeds.

Guinea pig awareness is important because they’re so misunderstood, thanks to pet shops. They often know minimal about the animals they sell, because it’s a retail job more than anything. They’re just looking to make a profit and move product. Of which, are cages that are far too small, unhealthy food and dangerous accessories. It’s honestly quite bad and so many end up in rescues because people weren’t aware of the care/space they actually needed. They’re also wrongly advertised as “starter pets” for children and SO MANY stories of surrenders are because “the children lost interest”. This isn’t okay and isn’t teaching kids compassion towards animals…just that you can discard them when you’re bored. You can get animals with your kids in mind, but the adult should know that it’s their responsibility, not the child.
It’s important to spread awareness about how many are looking for homes in rescues/shelters and to adopt instead of shop 😁 For an animal that is so commonly sold, they are actually exotic animals and need an exotic vet. Most regular vets that primarily see cats/dogs won’t know enough about the specific needs of guinea pigs.
I had 2 brothers born at a rescue (a sow came in on pregnancy watch) and with lots of love and care, they were the sweetest angels. I devastatingly lost Peeko at the beginning of this month, leaving his brother Clay (it wasn’t something I could prevent or cure and trust me when I say I did everything for him but ultimately put him first).
Another local rescue had a lone 1.5 year old male. He lost his cage mate and the “kids lost interest”. He is with me now, in a separate cage before I attempt bonding. He is so skittish and clearly hasn’t had the care taken to get him used to people …even after at least a year! Clay is 2.5 years old and the difference is night and day. Even when Clay was his age, he was still as chill and cuddly. This poor new pig has spent his whole life scared of people. Even if this bonding doesn’t work out, I hope I can take him back to the rescue with a bit more self confidence. I really hope it works and I’ll do my best 🤞
Otherwise I’ll have to wait for some of their babies to be old enough, because all other males are already paired.
This is all stuff that people aren’t even close to knowing about what it takes to have piggies.

Right, but the same could apply to lots of other pets. It should just be "pet mistreatment awareness" or something. Not sure if guinea pigs overall need it even more than other pets in the pet-store, but I doubt it (they need it along with other pets)
Poor little guy! The kids might have been really rough with him or played with him like a toy before they lost interest. And he might have just been left abandoned in a dirty cage for long periods. Ugh. I hope it's no time before he bonds with you. I'm sorry you and Clay lost your friend/his brother.

I had small babies so we sprayed outside anyway and it took 2 seconds as he didn't have much hair so by time i noticed smell it was too late and he was right as rain washing up liquid got it out hahahaha

In New Zealand spray print is locked up and you gotta be over 18 to buy it. I’m surprised it’s just laying around in the UK.

A Choice between having a child that has pale skin or a child that may soon pass away from Cancer before the age of 5......... WHAT A DIFFICULT choice to make.
I know it comes with some risk of skin cancer, but wouldn't the fact it is even legal simply have to mean there is a safe amount that wont cause cancer? And if you do it too much then you may get it. I still think its messed up to put a baby in there, and maybe they could be more prone to cancer from it or other damage than adults, I dont know

I'm convinced these posts like the one asking about tanning her kid are people trolling and I don't blame people doin that sorta thing, I was in a group for the place I used to live and people were so rude and judgemental and making assumptions about me when theu didn't know me that it was super tempting to create a burner account to fuck with them all, the people in that group were so nasty that I was tempted to fake/forge conversations on Facebook with some of the people and make it look like one of the blokes was asking me for rude things and then screenshotting it and uplading it to the group to ruin his marriage and business, people on Facebook are another breed, i had to give it up cos the people in yhst group and in other groups were making me want to get revenge and do some really foul things to them
