The printed numbers on the gas canister represent the weight of the canister when it’s empty, when the canister is filled professionally it’s put on scales that have that weight entered into them and then the correct amount of liquid gas is put into the canister by the scales automatically turning off the supply when full by allowing for the canister weight.
I started to do this a few years ago at the one and only filling station local to me with an LPG pump. It went ok for about 14 months but then one day they stopped me!! The manager came out and said it was illegal and pointed at a big notice saying portable gas cylinders were not permitted to be refilled. There are no alternative stations close enough to make it viable, so I can no longer do this. I never had a problem though and it was saving me a fortune on running my gas central heating in a rural location with no mains gas. Don't know how my gas cylinder supplier can justify charging more than a forecourt price for gas, and they are now even charging a market volatility charge and for delivery! They used to deliver free. So it now costs me almost £100 for a 47KG cylinder, which can last as little as a week in very cold weather! This is in the west mids area of the UK.
I'm all for saving money & i hate the fact that in the UK we are ripped off when buying bottled gas but you started off by saying that you've been doing this for ten years but you don't know how much gas goes in ! Sadly you have made a good case for why this is illegal.
It starts off great. "this end goes on the gas bottle" "nope sorry, other end" Takes 8 inch Adjustable, wrench, wrench, wrench, grunt -wrench, "There that's hand tight".

I worked in this industry for many years. You have demonstrated a lack of basic knowledge in the subject. The weight painted in the cylinder is the EMPTY WEIGHT OF THE CYLINDER, used by the company when refilling it. The employee refilling it at the depot enters this figure into the scales (like zeroing a kitchen scale with the container when weighing food) and that way they are able to make sure that the correct amount of gas is put in. It's a 47KG cylinder, which takes 47Kg - 96 litres - of gas. Still, at least your mistake results in your UNDERFILLING that particular cylinder. However, there are other, smaller cylinders where the empty weight is MORE than the capacity, and your advice could result in a fatal accident. Finally, not all cylinders are capable of withstanding the pressure of autogas, which is mainly propane. Some Spanish cylinders for example, are designed exclusively for butane which has a much lower pressure and there is a serious risk that they will rupture catastrophically in being filled with autogas because the walls are too thin... As someone else said, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
So what if you have a half filled bottle and want to top it up can it still be done ? Is there not a pressure release valve you can buy to simply stop you over filling them ?
Somewhere on the valve guard ( the steel surrounding the valve) will be stamped the history of the cylinder and the testing it has undergone, if the last test was more than ten years ago it is illegal to refill the cylinder, Flogas should have warning signs stating this and the fact that cylinders should only be filled by weight and not by liquid levels, the tare weight of the cylinder was 33.4 kg so the maximum fill would be 33.4 + 47.2 = 80.6 kg, the other safety related issue is that he was carrying the cylinder laid on its side which is a very hazardous method of transport. They should always be carried in the upright position and secured so they cannot come loose as a result of the relative movement of the carrying vehicle. I suggest he spends a little time on the internet reading the LPGA information on the safe handling, storage and transport of lpg , it won’t hurt the site management to read it also.
Refilling propane tanks are normal thing here in California, most of us have a portable gas burning BBQ, so using propane tanks and refilling them is common, of coarse the gas station people must refill the tanks for safety reasons but nothing dangerous or out of ordinary.
I'm pretty sure you don't have propane in California. It's more expensive to separate propane from butane, so a combination is sold whenever possible, called _liquefied petroleum gas_ (LPG). Propane is sold in very cold areas during winter because it has higher volatility and lower boiling point.
Yeah LPG is approximately, Half the weight of water. E.g. in Australia a 45kg has bottle will take about 88 litres. With out any problems. Although I've seen people just fill the bottles until the auto gas bowser reaches is pressure max. And turn off automatically. ( just like filling a car) Thanks for the video!
to John . Mitch - In Bulgaria Just drive up with your gas bottle stand it by the pump, the attendant comes say's how much, Then fills it to your requirements. Gas costs about 20p a litre. I had to refill my house hob bottle last year ( summer 2018 ) it cost me just over 10 lev £5 and will last me about 2 years. If you buy an empty or sell a gas bottle in Bulgaria the seller has to provide a pressure test certificate. The UK Prices at 69p a litre are a rip off even at the pump.
good on ya mate i been doing this for years i even made a video too lol hate being ripped off well done for spreading this and letting people know they can save huge amounts
I worked in pressure test services that tested, painted, reconditioned all calor gas& BOC bottles in Ireland. That writing on the bottle is the weight of the empty bottle! Not the amount of gas that's in it at all. So this is very dangerous info your giving out!!!!

I'm wondering about the blue 15kg butane Calor gas bottles, is there such an adaptor to be able to fill that at a petrol station? Like someone else already said, Calor are taking the pi$$ when it comes to pricing, assuming that you can actually get them to supply you with one nowadays, due to this covid BS and the shortage of many items.
As a German, I can say that our LPG is a 40:60 or 60:40 mixture of propane and butane with a density up to 0.6 kg/L. (density from wikipedia) So, if you have a 33kg bottle that would make 33/0.6=55L minus 20%, so 44L of LPG gas that can be filled.
In the UK its 1ltr of lpg = 0.5kg 2ltr =1kg The Bottle weight is 47kg minus 20% 9.40 = 37.6kg x 2 ltr = 75.2 ltr x 55 pence = £41.36 at today`s price. I got a refilled bottle today £85.00 that`s why I am here!!The guy in the video filled it to 70ltrs to be safe . Hefty price he was paying per ltr though!!
Still much cheaper then exchanging the bottle for me, Glad you noted the amount I filled it to for safety. I tried to stress how important this point is in the video
good to see some one else taking advantage of pump price gas in sufollk i haven,t found a filling station that will let you fill bottles directly from the pump so got round it by fitting a remote fill point on my van and it just looks like i am filling my van up here is link to my setup ua-cam.com/video/--OsfTtfiSI/v-deo.html
Popped to a local gas place today, they refused to fill it said it was against the law. Went to Morrisons and filled it no problem, however on the display it said you can't fill your own gas bottles, I questioned this and the guy said it doesn't have a valve on top to stop you over filling it but as I'd filled it it wasn't a problem. He said if the older guy was in he's a bit more nosey and probably wouldn't let me do it.
The valve he was on about is the contents valve...it bleeds out gas just like a radiator when it reaches the required amount ...i`m surprised he let you fill the tank but hey ho its way cheaper than buying from the supplier.
@@neilp7024 certainly is, where do you get those valves from? or is it worth while buying a safegas one which they let you fill up? or even just using my log burner lol. I'm using it for a patio heater and obviously I have gas regulator which fits to the pipe.
@@philwright8269 Hi Phil i use a camping gaz one on my boat and it has to be a certain size and it has no contents gauge or valve ...so what i do is weight it and when filling i put it on bath scales as its filling...do not overfill especially in the summer when temps are very hi for a long time,we fill our tanks to 75% due to expansion the bigger bottles come with a valve and a contents gauge (flogas)...however you can buy a regulator with a contents gauge as its better than nothing you hasve to rely on the accuracy and the valve is far better. If you did overfill you take off the hose on the regulator and open the regulator valve (making sure you are a long way from any sparks or flames etc.....but its best not to overfill in the first place.
First check if it legal to do so = it isn't in some places as the autogas is a different mix of propane/butane to what is used in BBQ and the burners aren't designed for it.
Sod that if they are anything like diving air tanks the bottle will expand on every fill slowly weakening it over time that's why they need hydrostatic testing ?

The number you're pointing at (33.4) is the Tare (Empty cylinder weight) not it's contents weight. As you stated at the start the gas weight is 47kg. At least the number you're working on is lower than 47kg. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
This is true, however, the more weight the cylinder has, the bigger it is and the more gas it can hold. There is a direct correlation between the tare and the gas capacity. Although he has the details wrong, the math he was using was correct.
@@spudhead169 Not true. The tare weights vary depending on the thickness of the steel used in construction. Older cylinders can weigh almost twice the amount of modern ones.

Can't believe this is on UA-cam, just the amount of debate in the comments shows how much interpretation and potential for mistakes there is. Anyone using enough gas to make a substantial difference to their costs should just go and get themselves some proper 4 hole refillable cylinders that don't need any dodgy adaptors, have a pressure gauge, a safety pressure relief valve, and most importantly, a built in automatic cut-off that stops the pump when the bottle reaches 80%. If you get through lots of gas, you can get 160ltr refillable tanks you can fix into a vehicle or even a small dedicated trailer.
how can i do this for Portuguese gas canisters? There are so many different ones here... maybe its just easier if I change the fitting at the appliance i want .Where to get that fitting?
Brilliant video mate, I appreciate very much you using your time and effort to put it together for us. And today I learnt something new, something very beneficial.
Just been given funding to get a safegas bottle, £240, got a garage 2 miles away, asked them, they said it was ok, 😊, price is £1, ish a lt, one third the price
At 2:50, you're incorrect. That 33.4 is the TARE WEIGHT. That's the kg Weight of the EMPTY cylinder. 47kg is the mass of gas that the cylinder can take. So, 80% of 47kg is what you can put into that cylinder.
@@pencilme1n Are you sure about that? Do you have a source? What you say DOES make sense, however, given that somebody will probably fill it to the capacity that is stated on the canister...

i would rather have an exchanged unit , only because its checked over for cracks and the saftey valve replaced more often , working safe with gas is key
Incorrect in general the mark on the top , say 33.4 is the tare weight of the bottle. Has nothing to do with the capacity in litres. For example....On filling an empty bottle it will hold say 19kg of gas plus the weight of bottle at 33.4 weight full 52.4. Do not get confused. Right to say do not fill past 80%. Be very careful and overfilled propane cylinder may deliver liquid gas and be very dangerous.
Adapters to do this are all over Amazon/eBay. I’d love to do it but I’m pretty sure the petrol stations near me won’t entertain it. You could try leaving it in the boot of your car so they think your car is a gas conversion but they get funny about you having the boot lid or doors open at petrol stations. Also they may call the Calor gas or Flo gas police to come and put you in prison immediately (without passing go or collecting £200 - apparently). Robbing so-an-sos. I notice this guy is doing this in a rural area, probably at a privately owned petrol station so they’re probably quite relaxed country folk.
Very great presentation ! John, please let me know where to buy the first small adapter European Canister / Bayonet Autogas. I have found on-line several adapters, but no the right one. Thanks in advance to John or another friend who will help me to find a market on-line.
Go online to their shop or call Tinley Tech. All bottles (non Calor) should have an automatic shut off valve & a pressure release valve. This video is inviting dangerous methods
In the Uk it is mainly propane, in Europe it is usually a mix. when I had LPG powered vehicles I would often have to adjust my mixture ratio after filling up abroad. butane is more energy dense and heavier but liquifies at a higher temp. If you get a butane bottle to a little below freezing it will give off zero vapor and insufficient pressure where as a propane bottle will work fine at -20 or so.
There is 92L in a 47kg cylinder. At the price you are paying its around £65 to fill your cylinder up the last 47GK cylinder I had (6 weeks ago) was £62 delivered to my door(and there are cheaper places).. is it really worth it?
The safety valve built into the gas bottle convinces me that this method of filling is totally safe and a godsend for campers traveling around Europe. Sign me up! Brilliant video thanks.
I'm used to the tanks in the US that had a bleed valve and an overfill prevention device. Open the bleed valve, connect the hose, turn on the pump. When it's full(80%) the OPD will kick and stop te pump. Close the bleed valve, disconnect and you are done. The larger tanks don't have an OPD, but you can guage by the vent . Solid stream of propane? It's full to 80%. I filled tanks for customers at my work all day. TBH, it's probably safer than petrol to pump.

To fill the bottles until the dispenser stops automatically, there must be a float valve inside the bottle, to avoid overfilling it.
There has to be an expansion space left in the bottle. or its a bomb!
My gas bottle is 3.9kg calor gas bottle. Am I right in thinking it’s roughly 7Litres I put in?
good on ya mate i been doing this for years i even made a video too lol hate being ripped off well done for spreading this and letting people know they can save huge amounts
I worked in pressure test services that tested, painted, reconditioned all calor gas& BOC bottles in Ireland. That writing on the bottle is the weight of the empty bottle! Not the amount of gas that's in it at all.
So this is very dangerous info your giving out!!!!
that empty alone is 33kg????
I think you're wrong mate bit embarrassing if you worked with em for years
What happens when you get distracted and you overfill the cylinder? How do you ensure that the cylinder gets it's regular pressure tests?
33.4 kg x 2 litres = 66.8 litres
80% from 66.8 = 6.68 x 8litres = 53.44 litres
53.44 litres it is 80% from 66.8 litres

Weigh it and let some out . Do it outside in an open area. This guy has already stated how to work it out.
Look on eBay. They are available. Scrapyards have bottles generally.
Excellent video straight forward and to the point well done!
As a German, I can say that our LPG is a 40:60 or 60:40 mixture of propane and butane with a density up to 0.6 kg/L. (density from wikipedia)
So, if you have a 33kg bottle that would make 33/0.6=55L minus 20%, so 44L of LPG gas that can be filled.
In the UK its 1ltr of lpg = 0.5kg 2ltr =1kg
The Bottle weight is 47kg minus 20% 9.40 = 37.6kg x 2 ltr = 75.2 ltr x 55 pence = £41.36 at today`s price.
Many thanks John very much appreciated- rip off Britain its no joke.

They've wedged the fill button so they don't have to hold it.

Even google tells me that..if this is true..has this bloke reached Uranus yet?
I dont think you can get 4 holes in the UK, wasnt it outlawed after the mont blanc tunnel fire?
how can i do this for Portuguese gas canisters? There are so many different ones here... maybe its just easier if I change the fitting at the appliance i want .Where to get that fitting?
You said 67ltrs maximum in that bottle, then you put over 70 ltrs in. ? Also you fitted the adapter 'hand tight' with an adjustable spanner
Can you please confirm what difference it makes if say the bottle were half full? Do you simply open the bottle valve once the gun is connected??
Brilliant video mate, I appreciate very much you using your time and effort to put it together for us. And today I learnt something new, something very beneficial.
Iv just filled my 47kg at Asda but it only filled to 20 litres then shut off. It was also very slow to fill up. Any idea as to the problem.
Just been given funding to get a safegas bottle, £240, got a garage 2 miles away, asked them, they said it was ok, 😊, price is £1, ish a lt, one third the price
Please tell me, can you use LPG inside in a heater where you would normally use Butane???
At 2:50, you're incorrect. That 33.4 is the TARE WEIGHT. That's the kg Weight of the EMPTY cylinder. 47kg is the mass of gas that the cylinder can take. So, 80% of 47kg is what you can put into that cylinder.
47kg is 80% of the capacity of the bottle. It's already been allowed for.
@@pencilme1n Are you sure about that? Do you have a source? What you say DOES make sense, however, given that somebody will probably fill it to the capacity that is stated on the canister...

Dear friend A serious omission you make when you attach the fitting to the bottle, you must always put a flange, you can not attach two metal surfaces without a flange, prevent any leakage ,and the numbers you see on the bottle are the tare weight of the bottle is not the weight of the content

Can you fill your lpg car from gas cannister ?
So is lpg propane or butane?
Did that cut off automatically?
In the Uk it is mainly propane, in Europe it is usually a mix. when I had LPG powered vehicles I would often have to adjust my mixture ratio after filling up abroad. butane is more energy dense and heavier but liquifies at a higher temp. If you get a butane bottle to a little below freezing it will give off zero vapor and insufficient pressure where as a propane bottle will work fine at -20 or so.
very informative but you should always use proper gloves when working with lps ..

So, what country is this orange bomb canister being filled in?
Just so you all know, in Europe this is illegal at most stations... please inform yourselves before doing this.

I am in the USA, isn't their a vent that should be creaked open when you are filling the bottle. We do have in the USA.
Yes, there's a safety valve that has to be pushed in by the connection, simply turning the tap/valve will not release gas.
@@Phil-Sands In the UK only Liquid take off tanks that use a "Rego" connector have a valve that's pushed in, standard vapour take off tanks don't although SOME have excess flow devices so if the hose ruptures the gas will shut off (and you'll probably hear a click when it happens) the valve is reset by turning the cylinder valve off and on again.
