Night Owl I Agree with you there. Derby, Irish Derby, King George & Juddmonte (then known as the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup) in same year. I can't think of ANY other horse that won all 4 in same year. (Nijinsky won the first 3 of these but back in Nijinsky's year - 1970 - the Benson & Hedges didn't yet exist on the racing calendar). Troy was a great horse. I was shocked when he finished 3rd in the Arc. It surprises me somewhat that Willie Carson seems to rate Nashwan higher, fine horse though Nashwan was. (Nijinsky won the first 3 but back in Nijinsky's year
@@keithf_ yep the same thing with Nashwan Himself, and Generous too.Nashwan had an off day in the prix neil, and Generous never got going in the Arc. It's like all of the Horses Mentioned, are written off , despite their Earlier achievements. Shergar too, people say He was overrated cos the Derby was poor and a slow time, Any Horse that can win the Derby by a record ten lengths, being Eased up and patted is special, and He wasnt the Horse he had been by the st.leger when He ran very flat and Lifeless. One Horse tho Dancing Brave is still revered, like his last run in the breeders cup Turf when only 4th, didnt even happen... ??
@@keithf_ I think it was probably just the product of a long season, I read a book about Carson and they had a chapter about Troy and Carson reckons a fresh Troy would have murdered them, I'm not sure what the ground was in the Arc? I do believe he favoured fast going although I know he was his Sandown trial by a head on soft ground.
@@kevinmunday5782 I to believe Nashwan wasn't anything like the same horse when he got beat, I do believe that they should have ran a pacemaker though, I think he was a exceptionally good horse of a strong gallop.
Tony McGrath...sorry u are overrated sir ...my father always said so back in the day ... Troy was a super horse ..look at who he beat ..ela mana mou went on to be the best of best at 4yrs old .. plus the others from 1979 crop ..so Mr McGrath needs to keep his poor counsel to himself ...sorry but true
Troy was Overrated, visually impressive in the Derby but he just stayed on the one pace passing horses that went way too fast early on. The filly Three Troikas showed him for what he was worth in the Arc.. an average Derby winner 👍
He’s up there with all the greats
My all time favourite flat horse
Troy, great horse yes. But for me it's Nijinsky, the horse that, in 1970, sparked my love of horse racing. He was a magnificent thoroughbred.
@Lutherbuckhurst
And mine too.

Great horse ☺
Sir Willie Carson de Little Short Man My Jockey
Great Horse
What a lovely ride WILLIE CARSON GAVE TROY A TOP JOCKEY AND A FANTASTIC TRAINER MAJOR DICK HEARN THEE MAJOR WAS THEE BEST AS HE KNEW HIS HORSES
Troy lost its footing off that last bend a great effort under the circumstances.
Troy never really gets the credit he deserved when some talk about great horses.

So a Derby winner has to win the Arc to be good? He was very probably as good as any that have won the Derby since he won it.
