I am a former Austin resident and UT alumnus (in the 1980's). I also played and sang on Sixth Street on the week-ends--making like $20 per hour with almost all of it in quarters and dimes. Listen to Gurf Morlix singing the song "Thinking About the Music You Might've Made." It's about Blaze.
I love listening to the Austin locals talk about their memories of Blaze. That documentary film about his life is amazing. I have a copy of the recording done at the Outhouse. He was exceptional. Also love Gurf for all that he has done. Also love Kimmie who sang at his funeral.
Thank you, Otis. Blaze's story seems like it could be about so many people, yet it's entirely Blaze. Even as a late-comer to his music. I'm glad there are folks around like Gurf to tell his story, and I appreciate that his music was recorded. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. The tragedy in the comedy. Many thanks to Gurf for the stories. Happy Friday. Gonna go listen to some Blaze and some Gurf. Be good to you 🤍
As always, man, thank you. This reminded me that my band played The Hole In The Wall in the late '90s. We drove all the way from Memphis to play one gig.
Drunken Angel. Such a tragic life. I first learned of Blaze (and Gurf) as a Lucinda fan. Read a lot of stories about him. Such a shame he never got to see any kind of real success or know how many people would come to appreciate him.
I enjoy Blaze’s music very much. This story today was terribly right on in its truthfulness about Blaze's life. So many of these wonderful musicians abused themselves. It almost seems a requirement of the life they lived in order to write the music they wrote. Yet, so many songwriters have not done this and survived (I know he died from a gunshot wound). I guess that is a reflection of the difference in all our lives.
OTIS, sad life of angels flying to close to the ground , their music was hunting and real. Writing songs like Towns and Blaze did , it would take a toll on anybody giving so much of their souls. God bless these musical hobos. God bless you OTIS for telling the stories.

A shame Blaze didn’t get the chance to tour with his music 🎶… but it sounds like that wasn’t a possibility… a sad ending… for him… Appreciate the little things in life … folks… sometimes they’re the best things to happen to you… 👌👍👌
I totally relate to this one, ive led a spotty life and I've been a homeless addict and I've known talented people who lived on the edge of self destruction. I've been sober over 20 years now. But hanging out with people like this, is like rubbernecking a traffic accident , you know it's wrong but you can't look away. I never did know what time to leave the party. But to the people who think you can't change , you can . believe in yourself
I really liked this interview, and he's such a relatable person. Every scenario, you feel like you've been there too, and in a way, so have I. Wished I could have seen and known Blaze, and it sounds like he had a good friendship with Gurf. I have a few autographs, and I cherish mine of Gurf and Lucinda. Great stuff
I first heard about Blaze when I opened for Gurf. We all sat around a campfire afterwards talking telling stories, when the Blaze topic came up Realized how many musicians, artists go down the same road.
I used to go to Hole in the Wall. I miss Blaze' music..& it's sad how so many artists suffered...like it might be a prerequisite to extraordinary talent, the real poets, like Townes...
Kind of Sad. But important to hear the stories. Too Much Junkie Business. And BTW Gurf's new record is really great. Brilliant song writer, and and he played every instrument, recorded and produced it himself.
Off the top of my head. Big Cheeseburgers and Good French Fries. I was fortunate enough to see Gurf's tour promoting Kevin Triplett's "Duct Tape Messiah", a doc on Blaze. There is a lot of Blaze's art interwoven in the documentary for those who might want to see examples of it. Been thinking about this long enough and I believe "No Goodwill Stores in Waikiki" is starting to play in my head.
God Otis, That was hard to listen to. It’s a thin line between Genius and madman and Men like Townes and Blaze were cut from similar cloth. The psyche of people like this has always found me interested. What happens to oneself to end up that way. A deep mental issue or a soul crushing occurrence perhaps. Anyway The song. Cold cold world has always resonated with me. The lyrics are stark the melody simple but what a heartbreaker. Thanks Otis, interesting and tough to watch segment. R.I.P. Blaze and Townes. Two crazy diamonds for sure. 🎶
Look up about Chris Bell from Big Star. He had a sad story too. He is in the 27 club. If you listen to some of his solo music, you can hear the sadness in his voice and songs.
Hey Otis. Would you happen to have any stories about Tommy Bolin? You've had a few friends on your channel who have played with him when he was still living. I saw him in Portland Oct of 1976. He was on the same bill with Rush. Fly by night. And Bolin was promoting Private eyes.
Check out Gurf's new record and tell him Otis sent ya!

Gurf's work with Lucinda is my favorite period of her music. Got to see them in small place in N Cali.
I’ve searched for a piece of Blaze Foley art for my collection for a long time. Thank you guys for doing this
Thinking about Blaze nearly makes me cry.
What a special interview. Thank you, Otis and Gurf.
So great to see and hear Gurf telling tales ,thanks Otis.
Gurf is the man!!! He plays Blazes music better than anyone!!! ✌️😎

“Austin before Austin was Austin”.
I like to think of it as Austin when Austin was still Austin. I miss that town circa 1978ish.
Hey Otis, these Gurf interviews are the best Man! Thanks for doing what you do.👍
If Gurf Morlix wrote a book I would love to read it.
Great to see Gurf! Haven’t seen him in years. Great musician!!
Otis. Through you I discover Gurf's music. Yalls writing styles are very similar. Thanks to you, Gurf just gained a new fan.

Always remember first time I heard a Blaze song.
The moonlight song.
Just gob smacked me as I was driving home through the hills.
Stunning.

Thank you for an insight into Blaze Foley, who I have only just found out about, for my sins. What a talent he was.
Wow. Great stories. You could literally visualize every moment
I went to the Outhouse frequently when I first moved to Austin. I had no idea who Blaze was at all but he was there and frequently obnoxious.
"Me and Vince and Townes and Blaaze..."
Legends of Austin.
(I witnessed a few Houston chapters.)
Love the Blaze stories.
When Townes turned on the obnoxo, he got a strange, faraway look in his eye.
I used to go to Hole in the Wall. I miss Blaze' music..& it's sad how so many artists suffered...like it might be a prerequisite to extraordinary talent, the real poets, like Townes...

I know "If i could only fly" is the big one, but I love Clay Pigeons.
good songs last forever
this remindes me i need to buy the rest of gurfs cd's.
I knew blaze was living rough but I didn't how it was that rough! damn.
Great, great stories!
“When the going gets weird the weird turn pro” Hunter S. Thompson - THANKS GUYS!
Please ask him about his time with Warren Zevon if you get a chance to do this again:) Sure would appreciate it Otis!
If I Could Only Fly... 1st rate song.
Blaze Foley was punk rock.his music may not have been but he himself was
What's your favorite Blaze Foley song?
Clay Pigeons is my favorite and John Prine's version was my introduction to Blaze
“June or September”
Off the top of my head.
Big Cheeseburgers and Good French Fries.

so sad \, such talent
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
I was tryin' to be fryin'....
It was low down. 😢

Curious, did Gurf indicate whether anyone was ever charged for Blaze's shooting death? If so, what was the outcome?
He was charged but not convicted.
👍
So sad

It was a very Austin performance.
