      So sorry about your mishap. Dropping electronics in water doesn't always
      have to be "taps" for them. Remove any batteries or power sources
      immediately, shake out all the water that you can, and ASAP, put the
      device in sealed container full of uncooked white rice (a large "zip
      lock bag" will do). Put in enough rice to completely cover the device.
      Seal the container and let it sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours.
      After that, remove the device, reinstall the battery or connect it to
      its power supply, and power it on. It very well may work. We've done
      this a number of times with our Kindle Fire XD, a cell phone, and an
      iPod Touch - worked for all of them. The iPod touch was dropped into the
      toilet bowl and was completely submerged. The others were splashed
      really heavily with water, tea, coffee, or wine. Might work for you.
      Best of luck with that if you try it, and best wishes all around.
      Cheers.

    If you removed the battery when the water entered your camera, you can probably save it by leaving it inside an oven for a few hours on low temperature. I got water out of my electronics that way and it worked every time!

    I actually have a Sevelor inflatable kayak. I love it.easy to haul and inflate. Sturdier than most people think. And it was reasonably priced in 2003. Great for floating or rivers and small rapids. I have never seen anyone who had an inflatable.

    I just donated $5.00; wish it could be more. I was sorry to hear about the loss of your camera; it can happen to anyone. It's good you shared this story because if you don't ask, then people who appreciate your work can't help. The world needs more positive uplifting spirits like you. Thanks for sharing the beauty of Alaska and I hope you are able to share some float footage eventually. PS I recently bought your book and rate it a 2 thumbs up!

    Dropped mine once and letting it dry naturally is best and don't turn it on or off till your sure its dryer out or it will fry. I even dryer out a tv this way. That quit when water dripped in it from a leak.

    I picked up an Olympus TG-870 for under $300 to use when out on adventures. It fits in your pocket, it's waterproof, dust proof, crush proof, the display flips up for "selfies", and it records surprisingly good audio for a waterproof camera. Every other waterproof camera I've owned you could "scream" at from inches away and barely hear it on the video. Another camera that would be good for kayaking is an Eken H9 action cam for about $80 (can be found for as little as $50.) Comes with the typical Gopro-like waterproof housing and a bunch of mounts.

    Brooke, I feel your pain. I did the same thing to my camera when I was filming a video on salmon. It was not an $800 camera though. I did end up taking the opportunity to upgrade cameras, but now I'm terrified about dropping my new one. I'll donate a bit, and hope you get enough to replace it, or even upgrade it...though if you're prone to dropping things, maybe an upgrade isn't a great idea.

      They are not "professional" cameras like your damaged Nikon, but they really produce amazing pictures for what they are. They are packed full of features and offer high resolution and HD video. Best of all they are rugged and you would never have to worry about dropping them or even dropping them in the water for extended periods of time. They are rated for light diving and underwater pictures and video.

    re: the whole camera thing-and how it struck you that you felt it, that you did not have the camera to share that experience...and I went through that a bit(only still photography) and I dunno just came a point awhile back where I started venturing out and about more, without my camera and it actually at first bugged me-like you said was like ooooh I want to get a shot of this and that and then oh yeah I don't have it with me, darn! I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing either but, I do think in my own case, it benefits me to once in awhile give myself a camera holiday, where it's just me experiencing things without it, just giving myself over to the experience itself without concentrating always(or without experiencing something through the lens) on capturing the moment! happy trails!

    How depressing! The first year of my channel I used to go film trips in the swamps and wetlands. One trip I had a tripod leg sink in and it fell over. Ouch!!...I have lost 3 cameras that way in the last 20 years. The last little point and shoot camera I dropped in the lake when my canoe capsized in a lake in the Yukon. The water was very clear and shallow so I retrieved it and paddled back to shore and left it in the sun all day. The key thing I did here was I DID NOT SWITCH IT ON. After leaving it for a couple of days in the fresh air and sun I turned it on and it worked...still works to this day. I try to avoid taking my Olympus SLR on the water, though I take my Panasonic HD Camcorder. Ideally I need to get a camera that is sealed, or that I can buy a waterproof case for. Take care Brooke!

    • @therealgirlinthewoods
      @therealgirlinthewoods  7 років тому +1

      Yeah- I lost a camera ON the Yukon in Alaska- sat it on top of a cooler going down the river in a skiff- then the lid blew off the cooler and whoosh- there goes my camera! Lost some really great pics. But yeah- I think i need a camera for the water and one for land! Still no guarantees- I've broken my share of cameras dropping them too! Maybe the best thing to do is buy it new with accident insurance! thanks for watching :)

      As far as dropping something, I was climbing Lambert Dome in Yosemite, which is insanely vertical. My camera fell and started quickly rolling down the rock face. Of course I extended my reach to save it but when I picked it up, my friend and I locked eyes. We both had the same thought "that was really stupid"! I could have so easily fallen trying to save a camera. NOT WORTH IT but I reacted with my first thought of not losing all my vacation pictures. Thankfully my friend didn't have to attend a funeral.

    Sucks when photogear goes down like that. One thing I learned in film school was always have a splash housing/bag for when you're near water or heavy rain. You can also put some mositure asorbers in it in case of small leak or humidity. Not sure if you were using a DSLR, but some thing as simple as this could help next time. I would suggest using it whem your anywhere near water or with 50 ft, cause you never know.
    www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/547694-REG/DiCAPac_WPS10_WP_S10_Waterproof_Case.html
    Don't feel bad. I have worked on film shoots where they used $30,000 and up cinema cameras while standing in waves at the beach or in heavy down pour and they used trash bags for protection and water got on the camera bodies and damaged them or some of the gear. Look at the upside, you can update your camera!

    Happy you got help with a new camera. This video also shows you didn't win the Alone show, sorry to hear. Nice try though. I think building the cabin did you in with not getting enough food to sustain the energy between catches. I knew it was over in episode 5 for you. You did an awesome job lasting as long as you did! I wish you had won, though you got an experience of a life time to tell your grand children about.

    Have you tried calling product support to see if it can be repaired [or considered asking Todd Harrison of Todd Fun about it (a you tube electrical engineer)?

    • @therealgirlinthewoods
      @therealgirlinthewoods  7 років тому

      I called- doesn't sound good for the camera. I will have to pay for them to look at it. Maybe the lens is salvageable tho...

    • @thomaschase1719
      @thomaschase1719 7 років тому

      I commented the event on Todd's latest video. He was bench testing a hot tub controller he'd re-engineered. I think you should send it out to someone because what the heck someone like Todd can build a board from scratch if not simply replace the specific defunct element in a particular circuit once it's disassembled.

    Oh crappers! So sorry your camera got away from you...ugh. I just made a donation and left a note on Paypal that I already have your awesome book but would love to get the other two items. Hope this helps! I always carry my camera in an Otterbox which floats. Have you seen those?

    Mother Nature doesn't seem to like when everything goes right, she's brutal and really kicks you hard. I've learned this a couple times from getting lost with my troop in the woods, and having a kid get a head injury on a Mountain away from help. It's stupid, but you'll always think twice.

    The body, glass, and whatnot night be able to be salvaged. It's probably just the electronics that are fried. I would look into the possibility of repair services or replacement parts before a complete replacement. Maybe it might help. Best wishes, Brooke! I wish I could help more, but I'm super broke right now. Praying for things to get better! ❤🙏
    edit: Have you thought about reaching out to some of the other outdoor youtubers in the community? I'm sure they know the heartache of losing vital equipment. Steffi's got a huge subscriber base, maybe she could put together a call to action?

    • @therealgirlinthewoods

      I think repair would be costly, according to what I've researched.... I may end up putting it on Ebay for parts or whatnot. Thanks for suggestions Mark!

      Thanks Roger- I would guess it would cost around $20- 25 to ship to Australia.... I know when I ship a book to Europe it's about that. So you decide... If you donate, I'm shipping!
