God I hope this lives up to the books. I don't read a ton of sci-fi, but this grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I didn't realize Netflix was doing a series but now that I'm aware of it, like a hunter in a dark forest I must seek it out and ******* **.
So glad to see you guys checking out this show. Hope more reactors cover it, but so far you're the first I know.
I can say I saw some of this at SXSW festival the other day and it was fantastic. This show is the definition of epic. But it's not just all spectacle. There's surprising a lot of very intimate character moments. The show is way more than your average blockbuster films or TV shows these days. It takes it's time and it's overall really smart. It's I will say if anyone has a hard time with violence There's not a ton but when it happens the scenes are very violent and graphic.
Epic! But it will be horrifying.
Never read the books (never heard of them, in fact), but I caught this trailer a few days ago and it piqued my interest. I marked the date on my calendar.

Unrelated to the show (mostly), but the WOW! Signal's origin still hasn't been definitively pinpointed yet. A couple years back, there was a claim that it had finally be traced to cometary activity. That got a lot of press.
What didn't get a lot of press was when it was determined that the comet hypothesis doesn't appear to be a good fit after all. The comet in question wouldn't have been in the correct location, comets don't produce radio signals strongly enough at the right frequency, and if it were a comet, it would have been picked up by multiple detectors in the Big Ear.
For now, it remains a mystery. Probably always will be, unless we detect something like it again and can get some additional data. The first time around just wasn't enough to work with.
The "wow" quote from Da Shi is not in the book. he is not even a scientist. i bet he make some kind of point in this scene. its a red herring kinda, and kinda not :)

The talk about this book series makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I read the entire trilogy. And I thought the first book and a half were really stupid. Sure, it finally got better--with lots of cool sci-fi existential ideas (albeit, in a shallow way). But the whole series was wildly sexist, with women as either evil or constantly making the wrong decisions to the detriment of the entire human race and all the men were misogynist anti-heroes. And this is coming from a person who liked it at the end...I don't understand the hype.
Those are very valid observations on the series and it has a lot of such issues. I enjoyed a lot of individual moments and set pieces and concepts being explored; and that kept me going. But it's not a sci-fi series one reads for characters or their plot. Since that's kind of par the course for sci-fi anyway I don't think that knocks it for most people.
But yeah so many parts were eye rollers it makes it hard to recommend the novels despite all the times in there that are real eye openers.
Sigh, another wokie with sexism etc.. So what? there are 1000 evil male mcs for 1 evil female mc. This was OG scifi.
