Saul was chosen because Ye Wenjie told him a joke. Remember, she said to him after that, "I hope I didn't cause you any trouble."

There must be more than one way to take all that. Ye knows she's the subject of observation, so she says something the San-Ti would not understand...but must presume is critically important and probably dangerous to them. And at the same time, it could have been merely her expression of a bitter joke upon herself...she had tried to "accompany God" and discovered her gods don't want human accompaniment. But at the same time, the fact that she had given a "message" to Saul is known to Wade, which made Saul an excellent candidate for the Wallfacer diversion. Yet...maybe there _is_ a coded message in Ye's joke that Saul will understand later.

They said that communication is done once you have communicated. They don't have a hive mind but what they think, they will 'speak' what they think once they speak. They probably can't understand figures of speech because of this. I think they evolved to be this way because of the need for species-preservation everytime they experience an apocalypse during chaotic eras. Lying and manipulating against each other will just make them go extinct faster hence their "if one of us survived, everyone survives" dogma. They don't fear their kind, they fear the unknown and what they can't calculate, and that fear is what made them survive. That's why they can't understand the ways of the fearless. That's why they can't lie. That's why they are afraid of us.

And yet this would result in nothing... They still can't read human minds and tell what they are thinking... Therefore they simply cannot trust us just on face value!

One of the reasons that makes being a wallfacer unable to resign from it is that since you are expected to formulate ideas in your head and they can even seem wrong , illogical , incoprehensible , saying you dont want to be a wallfacer could easily be part of your strategy so they have to play along saying "yes sir", but you re still a wallfacer for them and for the enemy as well. Making your own pictographic language where only you know the meaning of the symbols, and if the symbols mean IDEAS and PLANS instead of letters, it would be impossible for Sophons to understand I hope. If the symbols were just corresponding to letters, it would be almost immediately decoded. If the symbols are ideas/concepts/plans, then Sophons would have no way to decode. But never teach the language to anyone, ever. The language is just for you, so you can keep your own thoughts organized, written on the wall you're facing.
I don't know if it is actually like that in the books, but I just finished the first book and about to start The Dark Forest. The Wallfacers can also use the collection of fairy tales and mix and match meanings that people but not Trisolarans could interpret but that seems risky.

I don't think it is such that they advance slower than we do, the linear vs exponential advancement, so much as, every time they enter a chaotic era, their civilization gets reset to the stone age. So while they, as a species, are probably millions of years older than us, their technology is less then 400 years ahead of us, not because they advance their tech slower, but rather they have been reset to the stone age over 1000 times. Also, the technology on the San-Ti transit ships are tech locked. The technology on the ships can not progress beyond what was available to the San-Ti at the date of their launch. And of course, their home planet could right now be in a chaotic era, or just coming out of one meaning the home planet is in a stone age. and will still be in the stone age when the San-Ti arrive.

The way I interpreted this scene is that: It's up to interpretation regarding exactly where his consciousness is. Wether he'll be "experiencing" this setting throughout the whole time, I think may be intentionally unclear.
My current head canon is that since the cryo process just slows everything down 1000-fold, maybe this dream-setting is where he "paused", and he'll experience this state of consciousness 1000x slower while he's in transit. But being disconnected from his body might change this? Idk, but very interesting to speculate about

They can’t change the wallfacer plans too much because certain elements of the plans from the books might be needed by other wallfacer’s plans. I’m not worried about there being one less wallfacer because at least one of them is not really needed and too hard to show on screen. What I am worried about is I think Will’s probe needed to be going a bit faster before it failed. That was a strange choice by the writers. Why not, say, the tenth nuke?

  • @LeeCarlson

The singular advantage that insects have is rapid reproduction and thus unpredictable evolutionary mutation. A lot of human technological innovations come out of the blue of individual conception, not the result of some continuous group effort...like a spurious mutation.

the San Ti didn't use the Sophons to hack the cars. The remaining ETO members did that. Maybe on the San Ti's behalf. So why would they have tried to kill him to begin with? It could've been that they knew he would become a Wallfacer before it was announced. So why would he be chosen as a Wallfacer? Because he spoke with Ye Wenjie at the graveyard. The joke that wasn't funny holds meaning. And I believe the meaning is that there is no meaning. Saul is a hedonist, he does things that aren't particularly useful. And I think the San Ti thinking he's useful when he isn't is the tactic. They will focus on him and waste their time.

In ep1, you talked about how we lived in a completely different world than what Ye experienced. Before watching this, I had watched reactions to Band of Brothers and Hacksaw Ridge, where they talked about people strongly feeling that serving was their duty, and that some felt it so strongly that they committed suicide when they were medically disqualified. Contrast that with the core group who frequently behaved with absolutely no concern for anything beyond themselves, even when confronted with the entire human race being destroyed. Choosing to let the entire species die rather than bear the guilt of causing and handful of deaths. Or, "No one asked me if I wanted this. I don't wanna play! I'm going home. WAH!" Even after knowing the stakes. Saul was an insufferably whiny little bitch thru most of this episode.
Staircase failing is much more in the tradition of actual space flight.
It also struck me that the women of the core group were the grownups, while the boys (wording intentional), were pretty immature.

*"It also struck me that the women of the core group were the grownups, while the boys (wording intentional), were pretty immature."*
That kind of sexist portrayal of males has been around in movies, ads, and tv series for decades now.. it's not going away any time soon.

So if San-ti wanted, they could wipe humanity out with those sophons. I guess they still need us for something.

It seems like Sophons can only do illusions

The show kind of implies they're more capable than they are in the books. The scene with Wade near the end - the flight turbulence was an illusion, same as Sophon appearing, but the show made it look like they were tampering with the plane, which they cannot do. The same with Shi not being able to see Jack getting murdered. I don't really disagree with these changes, the way sophon communication is done in the book is by writing a message into the retinas like the countdowns. The way the show does it much more dramatic since it's a realtime conversation between a human and Sophon rather than someone talking to themselves.

@@gosnooky I don't think hiding Jack getting murdered goes against anything in the books. We know the sophons can both be transparent and made to display images, so they could easy show an image of the empty apartment using an unfolded sophon.

They can hack cars anytime they want, why can't they hack airplanes and crash?

They could have gotten the spacecraft up to speed using gravity assist without the nukes. Voyager 1 is near 1% light speed but it took 50 years to do it. They could do it in less time because NASA didn't have their foot on the gas when they did the Voyager probe.

The Voyager probes travel at around 15km/s, that is 0.005% of the speed of light, and they relied on an orbital alignment for their gravity assist that only appears every 175 years

      Voyager 1 is at 17km/s , that's 0.006% of light speed.
The Parker Solar Probe is the fastest man-made object right now , at 0.064% of light speed.
