Harry Berly, the clarinettist identified in the photo caption at 3.30, was a trained, talented musician in both classical and popular genres. In addition to the clarinet he played the saxophone, viola, ocarina and tin whistle. At the age of 14 he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. In 1931 he joined Roy Fox’s band at the Monseigneur Restaurant, and also recorded with Lew Stone, Ray Noble and Jack Hylton. The poignant title of this number could well be applied to Harry: he died in in tragic circumstances in March 1937, aged just 31, after falling (possibly deliberately jumping) in front of an oncoming London Underground train at Oval station.
Although an excellent dance band musician he apparently became depressed at the prospect of not realising his real ambition of playing the viola in classical ensembles. At the inquest it was revealed that he had left a note, reading: “I have come to the end of my tether.” Such a sad loss for the world of music generally.
The HMV version is listed as being made in London by the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra, with Al’s contribution disguised as the then standard “vocal refrain”.
sorry but i`m gonna take credit for that "amazing sound quality" remark, I dont get many good ones like that believe it or not, but I believe what i`m doing with the sound (on some of them) is absolutely amazing too, I cannot deny it! (not blowing my own trumpet* but just overwhelmed with the results i`m getting) *no pun intended
I'm quite disappointed about the result of this video. Although I'm very pleased with what I wanted to achieve in the video itself and also surprised in that it just took me 2 weeks to make, I've spent 3 days trying to fix the aspect ratio to none avail as my settings got destroyed in an update, the aspect ratio should be more wider and should fill a 1920/980 screen, also I was unable to use the file format I previously use and thus the outcome is terrible, its blocky and the picture is taller than it should be. I may have to re upload this in future which is something I don't like doing because I lose all the nice comments. Oh well. Just had to get that off my chest 🤨

This song Is amazing
Al Bowlly's great song written by Stamper, recorded 26/3/'31 on a cardboard compound record- amazing sound quality considering.
