Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing

  • Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms-with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health.⁣

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

This is all so great... and I'm happy for the people that have the money to do all this. I'm a senior on social security. this is NOT going to happen, no matter how much I want it to. In this new economy [writing this in 2023], I'm having to work a second job to pay the OVER 50% of my income going to RENT and rent only. I've been listening to these doctors for years, yes, I'm a fan of Dr. Hyman and the rest, but they are preaching to a group of people that I am not a part of. I think it is very sad. there is NO HELP for the poor.

The worst doctors are the Endocrinologists treating and testing for Thyroid. They do not test for the active thyroid hormone FT3 and base it on just TSH and FT4 which is the inactive thyroid hormone. And the phrase “your labs looks good” is what you always hear and yet the patient is miserable. These Endos doesn’t believe in conversion issues and that’s what’s always seems to be the problem with thyroid patients and doesn’t know how to prescribe and test for T3 meds. And yes changing diet makes a big impact to help with conversion and improve one’s wellbeing but ordering the correct and needed tests is very important.

@@BonaFideWildLife there are many factors that could affect conversion. It could be high inflammation, fatty liver, insulin resistance, cortisol levels and sex hormones. There’s a blood test called Reverse FT3 to check for conversion issues. Going Keto or Carnivore helps with conversion issues coz it lowers your inflammation levels, could reverse fatty liver and insulin resistance without medication.

Thank you for writing that comment. You have to be wealthy to afford to be healthy! I live in California and I don’t have functional medical doctors that are in my area. Can’t find them, anyway. But I look at these videos with longing, because I have been too exhausted to function, for decades now. But I also know the disappointment t of knowing that it probably costs thousands and thousands to get treated. (I traveled to LA to see a functional doctor and she was pretty bad at it. Some of them get stuck in one healing method, and apply it to every patient, instead of doing this kind of health detective work, like the doctors in the video do.)

    • @katk1958
      @katk1958 3 роки тому +6

The most unfortunate thing about it is, if insurance did start to cover functional medicine then it'd no longer be any good either. The insurance companies via disincentivizing, etc., would tie the doctors' hands. You wouldn't get tested for anything more than you do now... your temp, blood pressure, and maybe a simple cbc blood test if you're really lucky. The system's worst nightmare is having a test show what's wrong with a patient who isn't actively dying/medical emergency within a few hours or days. As a matter of fact, even with positive tests they worm their way out of the diagnosis anyway. So then there's no treatment to give you a chance at overcoming your illness because you don't know exactly what you're fighting.
All we have available is our diet, which is extremely important. But, diet cannot grow new adrenal glands, repair channelopathies, neuromuscular junctions, or tubulopathies, repair other organs like hearts, or remove tumors, or repair genetic mutations. Diet can only do so much.

there are hundreds of different bacteria thousands of metabolites, and millions of combinations with life history.
All that testing will have only 1 effect: a total and quick corruption of the health system by exploding costs.
For a patient it is NOT interesting, what exactly is wrong with gut micro biome. Only for science is. The interesting thing is to make it healthy again. Which is first much cheaper, second much more sustainable.
Why are you guys not predominantly working on a robust methodology to acquire a healthy gut , regardless of the starting position?

I love functional medicine (FM)! Although traditional healthcare insurance doesn’t cover or include these type of doctors, many corporate healthcare insurance plans now offer HSA’s that will allow an individual to put $ aside in this account to cover and assist with other medical/healthcare expenses. I know this because I experienced it myself.

Found a functional doctor in Arkansas who is also an oncologist. Checked out her website, Does not accept insurance! Why?
I am 64 positive At age 40 Lyme and was treated, also tested positive for rocky mountain fever. Took me, several doctors, to get this diagnosed. Then when I still was not feeling good the doctor swore to me he never said I had Lyme Disease! Called my insurance and asked if Lyme was in the records. Yes, he had. Now why did he do that to me? He yelled at me about how he had tested me for malaria on and on. He was clearly frustrated and had a belly full of dealing with me.
So he sent me to another doctor in another state. Who went so far as to tell me Missouri and Arkansas do not have Lyme disease. Told me I was too young to be feeling so bad. And sent me on my way. I had given him a brain scan that had been done and he took it threw it on his desk, and never looked at it. It was all so weird I pretty much gave up on doctors.
So for 20 years now I have complained of bone pain, joint flu-like symptoms, and stomach issues. I also supposedly have a blocked 100% carotid artery in my left neck Which was operated on. when it was 50 - 75% blocked, 5 years later, and ultrasounds on the neck every year. Which funny thing was the first year it was right back to the 50-75% level. Nobody said a word. Year 5 is 100%. That was 13 years ago.
Feel at this point I must be on the verge of death. I feel so awful I look forward to death. At least the pain will be gone. I do not have a life to speak of cause I feel and look awful. My hair is falling out in clumps now. I suffer the same joint pain, nausea and throw up weird pain in my upper tummy, and rib pain that is just off the charts. Luckily for me, rib pain passes pretty quick, feel weak, Yet my latest attempt with the general GP said all my blood tests are normal. Does any of this sound normal to anyone? Memory issues, hearing issues, shall I go on. ugh

Hi! I was developing chronic pain and taking 2 Advil a day despite never popping OTC meds for aches before. I chalked it up to having a physically demanding job (even though I did it in my 20's) and to getting old (pushing 40's). What finally helped was taking Essential Amino Acids. Something in there (not histamine) took away all the aches and I didn't need Advil anymore!!! I did more research on why it helps and it turns out that AAs + Collagen + Saw Palmetto extract is a synergetic combo. I don't know about saw palmetto but the collagen helps my joints!! I hope this helps you and anyone else out there with chronic pain!

My Lyme and mold specialist just goes by the numbers on my lab work. I still have a fuzzy headache, and I feel stiff and weak.
I’m doing my own research to figure out how to feel functional in my everyday life. When you said sometimes doctors don’t test for nutrition, it hit me that she never mentions anything about my past infections besides the Lyme coinfections, the horrible stress I have going on, nor nutrition.
I’d love to have some of these tests run and find out why I’m so weak and not healing.
I also have a broken shoulder that hasn’t been healing correctly, so that’s an issue as well.
Ugh! I’ve been sick for 20 years, but did have Scarlet Fever and strep at least 3 times a year growing up, pseudonymous aeriginosa 5 years ago from a surgery.

I asked my gastro how you test for candida. You do the scope down your throat. Not blood. They take a biopsy and go from there. I spent 1000s upon 1000s of dollars and 5 years later. Nothing. This is fabulous but sadly health insurance doesn’t pay for most of it. So unless you’ve got lots of money you can’t get these services. I wish health insurance paid for more of these tests and services.

Hi, Dr. Hyman. I really enjoyed the video. It's the first one I've seen. A while back, I purchased one of your books, and I'm a big fan of yours. Pleeeeeease, keep up the wonderful work. By the way, has anyone told you you look like Jon Stewart? He's a real cutie. Take good care, and be well.

Very informative podcast. I just like to say that I'm a little bit reluctant on calling conventional medicine "traditional". Because in my opinion conventional medicine is just symptom relief and is something created by the western world. While traditional medicine can go to the root cause of the problem and exists for centuries in some parts of the world.
