As someone who hurt himself lifting in high school, even if you're young, you should be careful
I think Dr Mike understands that, we arent made of steel when we are young either. But we USUALLY recover a lot faster, while when youre older you may never recover at all
@weakestportuguese Yeah, I'm not worried about Dr Mike understanding it. I know HE does. I'm worried about young people watching this clip thinking they have a free pass until they're older
@@StewartFletcher Oh yeah for sure, youll still get hurt 😆😆

1 deadlift, with a form so horrible that I can’t remember it, and the injury that followed was all it took for 22 year old me to actually learn how to work out. Before that, I just got in the gym and moved things around for a few hours.
You got lucky because you were young, even at that age the same mistake can end people's deadlift career. Maybe not end, but significantly reduce their potential for the rest of their life.
@@onurbole7921 True. Im 29 now, and *every time I warm up for deadlifts now, (maybe once a month) I remember how badly it sucked to have a lower back injury while sitting in traffic or driving for hours. I had to have a big water bottle, or a pillow behind my back every time I sat down, or I just couldn’t make it home from work every day. I lost out on a lot of training and I still don’t pull as heavy as I likely could if I wasn’t as apprehensive about re-aggravating that injury. Thats my excuse for having a weak deadlift at least. My other numbers aren’t THAT impressive either 😂.
What was the injury?
@@alantyndall85 A sprained ligament in my lumbar spine. I can’t remember if it was L4 or L5 but I felt pain in my glutes and got some relief from a self massage technique on one of the bony protrusions on my lower back.
Either way, I sprained a ligament in my lower back and was advised to not lift excessively or put any load on my spine for 6 to 10 weeks. Since I was young and arrogant, I didn’t listen and re-aggravated the injury, prolonging my recovery. It took me a few months to fully recover, but by that time, I had basically stopped exercising entirely.

Right? Im getting to 40 and I changed my mind from "I want to lift everryplate on the gym" to "I am going to get the bigger I can get using the least amount of weight possible". My joints stopped "cracking" and I am getting more hipertrophy than when I was in my 20's, just by slowing the eccentric and pausing at the stetched position for a few seconds. Shoulder pain and knee pain are gone too.
And now you have muscle maturity. Im 48 tomorrow and feel just as good as my 20s almost. Dont train heavy anymore. More about reps now.
I love both of these guys but I, being 23 will defo recommend you to not push it too much. I was constantly hearing the same "You're young, you have the privilege to push yourself past the limits" and I did, I did both weightlifting and kickboxing ass to grass for 1 year consistent, and came off with broken wrist and injured rotator cuffs. Must've been on TRT. Your test is literally at 0 at that age.
Totally agree with this. I'm 32, so somewhere in between RP and Sulek, but lifting for nowhere as close as them two.
The amount of "big" and "old" guys I see in the gym lifting like there's no tomorrow I cant help to wonder how long they've been lifting for not knowing how (or that they should) control the weight.
One of my sets of seated cable rows is as long as 3 of their sets sometimes. Take it easy dude, but take it !

Seems you didn't have the genetics for it then
Another thing is there is a thing called maintenance strength, meaning after it started point you won't be able to get strength a lot more compared to when you are lifting at your beginning.
After you see that you are not getting that much strength at a certain point it is far better to maintain the maintenance strength of each individual person than gaining more strength
You're talking about beginner gains, where basically any decent level of increased physical activity will build significant size and strength. Whether it's better to continue training to increase size or strength after the beginner gains start to dry up depends on the individual and their goals
That was very inspirational

I broke my femur in half at 13, broke my wrist and my finger shortly after. I tore my labrum at 14, injured my sub-scapularis soon after. Dislocated jaw leading to permanent TMJ problems. Developed shin splints and back pain also. A couple years ago I had a heat stroke. I’m 23 now, I’ve lost count of my injuries. I train as responsibly as possible. I also have severe sciatica. My shoulder will become subluxated if I’m not careful. I have NEVER been made of magic and rubber. I live in near constant pain, even with doing everything I can to stay active and injury free. I’m happy for all the people that have gotten to enjoy their youth, but I never have.
Preach, people ego lifting and dropping weights all over the place is a huge pet peeve.
As you grow older, your mind matures with your body (hopefully). This is reflected in goal changes. Some people never get out of that competitive mindset and keep trying to recapture those youthful ‘glory days’. Their age has created a mindset that they have small window to achieve ‘one last run’ at being buff. I know guys who started PED’s in their 60’s for this reason. There is little consideration of how it turns out if they don’t drop dead when they think they will. Personally, I just want to stay ahead of the bell curve for my age group. Slow and steady. Avoiding injury is priority and if I leave potential gains on the table by erroring on the side of caution…that’s ok because I will be back here tomorrow.
lol, I’m 48, lift big weight for my own enjoyment. I could care less who else is in the gym, I just enjoy pushing myself to the limit. It’s like a weird therapy. I’ve also lifted weights my whole life and know my limits. It’s not ego, it’s just my twisted idea of fun.
If the young guys are doing it to impress women, good on ya. I’m happily married. I just happen to be a caveman.
Maybe I’ve avoided injury being totally natty. My body does what it can on it’s on and isnt redlined all the time
similar age and same, I would be lying if there wasn't some ego involved. But whatever I'm motivated to go gym regular, I stay relatively fit and I love it
You got no worries mate, pushing to one's limits ain't bad at all! The takeaway from the video would be to not sacrifice form over weight ig
Heavier weights are fine, if lifting in a controlled manner. Swinging heavy weights around with crappy form is the issue Mike is talking about.
@@ms3ben I have found when trying to break through a plateau, you can sometimes get a little sloppy with the form to make a break through. I was having a tough time getting to the next level with a dumbbell press, so I would crank out a couple of ugly, not quite full depth presses with the next level weight for 2 or 3 reps after a 6 rep of the lighter weight. I never use a spotter so it’s all on me. After about a month of this, I usually gain the strength and control on the top end to drop deep to the lower end. From a form point of view, it’s a bit ugly, but anecdotally, it can really help with those tough to break through plateaus. It was the same with curls. Get a little sloppy with form to break both the physical and mental plateau. It’s just what works for me I guess. the only guy I’m competing with is myself. It could look like ego lifting if you didn’t know what I was up to, but damn if it doesn’t make you feel great to make progress.
I'm 48 trying to get to two plates on a chin up it's gotta be neutral grip or nothing, but I aim to get it. Used to box amateur and competitive into masters, so this is me slowing down.. weighted calisthenics and calisthenics now. And I learned high rep burpees are killer cardio.. saves the knees.
Just support each other no matter what.
Competition can be healthy and fun, but it shouldn't be your goal. It's a game and there will be losers. Don't compare yourself to others, be content with the best loving, healthy version of you.
I live in a 55 plus community and see that all of the time. These men barely workout.Do zero cardio. And are walking around looking like they are at least 10 months pregnant. But they stick the entire stack on the bar, arching their back and make those gross noises while pumping out 5 reps?TF.I can’t.Makes me so uncomfortable.I am just waiting for something on their bodies to break!😮THEN?They leave the plates on the bar for me to have to remove to do my sets🙃🤦🏼♀️
That's called strength training you numpty, that's not the same thing as what they're talking about. Arching your back is the correct way to bench press and 5 reps is perfect if your goal is primarily strength over hypertrophy. Fair enough they should put their weights back though
Wait you are 55 no way 😂😂

I took the first couple weeks and just got my muscles, tendons, joints back in shape and ready to lift AT ALL. Even for young people, who lifting is dangerous. I saw a kid, looked at most 14, deadlifting with one of the worst forms I’ve seen in a while. I’m talking lifting with his lower back. I didn’t even know someone could bend their back that far. I immediately went up to him obviously but that form can destroy anyone regardless of age
Dr mike. Im 52yrs old and have always been natural. I would have been called a genetic freak over how much muscle i have gained. I still bench 420lbs and lift heavy once a week. Its not an ego. Its what i can do.

Amen 44 and going lighter, 15-20 reps slow and controlled made all the difference in the gym and the mirror... alternating look like thor and look like superman... thanks @drmike
I still remember an older Anthony Hopkins talking about just holding heavy weights in differant positions for a period of time. Not even moving them around.

I live by that last phrase every morning . Slow down your shit and control your shit. You usually only have to wipe once that way too
My take on the title, I don’t think many people can learn from others mistakes. When we are 14-26 give or take, most of us have to learn from pain, The greatest earthly teacher of them all. Just hope and pray it’s nothing too serious.
Even if you’re younger do this. Ever since I slowed and controlled my movements I have not had a single joint issue or anything similar. You grow just as fast as well. Still push yourself, but don’t toss weights
I'm 58. My approach is much different now. I've been able to avoid any serious injuries. Check your ego at the door.
I really hear him although i did sound off at 45 to try impress a very pretty maltese lady who had had some boxing 🥊 fights. I signed up for one against my better judgement. I trained for months the big night came i wss against some much younger guy, this fight was infront of my family and friends. I remember the coach saying get in there first and hit him hard. I went to war and won it was one of the toughest things i ve ever done the training was much worse than the fight i got battered! After the fight i spent a couple of days doing nothing been nursed by the said lady ❤. It made me realize i had nothing to prove but felt good to have put myself through such an event.
I have a heavy day but if it’s uncomfortable to control I dial it back
Also, the old you get, the more you are prone to injury... So going slower and having a better form becomes all the more important

At 54 ( training since i was 14) I'm acutely aware that my body can't take what it could decades ago. I have 14 herniated discs and have had 14 surgeries and over 30 broken bones. I have ro train around my injuries. Training incredibly hard but also smart. I focus on form and intensity, not on how heavy i can go. I can still move a ton of weight, but it's stupid to do so. Ego has no place in my workout. So well said brother. Hopefully your advice will help at least a few people.
The issue is when you are later 10s to the early 20s then you dont get pain...
And then. Pain. Only pain, no way out from the destruction you actively caused by believing you are invincible.
Slow is good, but I noticed at sound point in my life that my explosive strength was lacking severely since all my lifts were extremely slow. It’s good to incorporate safe and faster movements, because the burst of power is also very helpful in real life
When I was a child I thought as a child but when I became a man I put away childish things
When i was in my early 20s i was strong and lean and felt unstoppable, gym owner who used to compete in lifting told me "it only takes one ego lift to go from squatting 500lbs to not being able to pick up a pencil, watch your form."
