    Hi Sedge, something I have done since purchasing my Domino in Dec 2006. I took 12 of each size domino, eased the edges along the length and THEN drill a 5mm hole on each end (5mm in from edge) and these are kept aside for dry fitting. A 4mm or 3/16 hex wrench epoxied into a wooden handle (makes the ideal hook) is then used to extract the dominos with no fuss.

    I love using dominos for glue ups. Many say they aren’t necessary. But… I love the alignment they provide. Since I am just using them as alignment… sometimes I’m a little sloppy with how much glue I get on the dominos. But… it’s good to know what I need to be doing.

    Your leading edge mortise is set at tight, is the mating leading edge also tight or loose?

    I usually use the tight setting on one entire side, and then just the top of the other side and the rest of them loose. Are you making jist 1 pair of mortises tight?

    Great point on too much pressure with the clamps. It’s a common mistake and can cause wonky glue up’s. Awesome video as usual Sedge.

    Hello Sedge,
    An answer to this would mean a world to me!
    I've just bought my Domino and using it for the first time on my first project. I have watched i think all of your videos regarding domino and everything is quite clear to me.
    What im afraid of is the glue-up. I had some stressful times before using biscuits, where in dryfitting thrt were snug, and were a nightmare to get in when swallen from glue. I srill have nightmares.
    I feel the same dry-fitting snuggness mow with the dominos and am super afraid of thr glue up.
    My question is:
    Im this video, evdn with glue, your dominos go in with so much ease. How is that possible?
    Thank you so much for all your videos
    Dusan

    Wicked Video! Thanks for the tips. Now I know if I have been doing something wrong or not - I have been. I have been putting glue into the mortices and smearing the dominos. From now on, I will only smear the dominos. Thanks again for the tips!!

    Q: I understand the 1st domino is tight on both sides. Is domino 2, 3 and 4 loose on both boards, or tight on one board and loose on the other board?

    • @sedgetool
      @sedgetool  5 місяців тому +3

      2,3,4... are loose on both boards...

  • @dfs7979
    @dfs7979 5 місяців тому

    The most important thing when using a Domino for panels... plan and REMEMBER where you put them. On one of my first few panels, I let the boards run wild thinking I'll trim to length only to accidentally cut through a Domino!
    One other thing I wondered is what if I don't use any glue at all on the Dominos? Does it really matter? I know it isn't that difficult to butter them but when you have a large project you need to hustle. If you use original Titebond you might not have enough time to do more than 2 or 3 boards.

    • @sedgetool
      @sedgetool  5 місяців тому

      that is why I have used Titebond 3 ....longer open times...

    I hope it's not too late after this video was first shown to get an answer. I live in the Houston, Tx area with all of it's high humidity. When test fitting, even when the outside ridges have been removed, it is nearly impossible to remove the dominos. So, what I had to do was face sand them in order to be able to remove them (especially the larger sizes.) Anybody have any other ideas? I just recently brought the dominos inside an air conditioned space to lower the humidity, but don't know if this will work. Will making dry fit dominos that have have the ridges planed away, and face sanded to be bale to be removed, be my only option? Hope someone reads this that can help. I made an exterior door with 14x140 dominos that I could not get out of the tight setting. I literally had to flush them, then remortise.

    Actually, glued dominos in this situation prevent wood locally from free contraction, which could eventually lead to problems

    • @sedgetool
      @sedgetool  2 місяці тому +1

      May I suggest you need to do a little more research on wood movement.... this is the proper way to glue up..... wood does not expand in length it expands in width.....

    • @rastogallo1454
      @rastogallo1454 2 місяці тому

      @@sedgetool Exactly, wood expands/contracts in width and than there are dominos with grain oriented in 90degrees to that of the wood. So dominos prevents locally the wood from freely contracting. But in space between dominos, there is nothing to prevent that. So stress builds up which can possibly lead to cracks. It could be an issue especially with long dominos. It is not something I invented, you can read more about it for instance here: Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood Technology by Bruce Hoadley
