I checked old newspaper stories about these premieres and the radio broadcast of each one. The Master of Ceremonies for Broadway Melody's premiere was Fred Niblo, over Hollywood station KMTR 570, known since 1946 as KLAC.
@@tomc8115 No. Marion Davies was nicknamed "Queen of the Screen" when she was #1 female box office star of 1923. Although unofficially, Swanson was certainly one of the Queens.....I'd put Pickford, Gish and Norma Talmadge up there too.
@@holyspacemonkey That is sad. ☹️ I think her tuberculosis took more than 4 years to run its course. Maybe it ate up all her savings. I think she would have been a big star if she had lived, even with the advent of sound. She was fabulous in The Big Parade. And, I think she was totally glamorous and just stunning.
This is a real gem. Crystal clear footage, could have been shot yesterday instead of nearly 100 years ago. Camera work's a bit wonky and many of the names are misspelled, but marvellous nonetheless!
In the first part, the announcer is Bill Ray of KFWB, with the dark hair. The bald headed man helping him, is freelance announcer and emcee, Freeman Lang, also a prominent Los Angeles radio engineer. Charlie Wellman was only with KFWB from 1925 to 1927. This is from 1929, when Wellman was with KHJ radio.
Loved every moment of it, even though it was soundless. An added 20s Jazz soundtrack would have been Nice to really set the mood. ! Recognized all the names and faces and a few uncredited like Lorretta Young and Vera Reynolds. Awed all the endangered species the majority of women were wearing ! How many ermines, chinchillas and foxes gave up their lives for these red carpet affairs. But they look Fabulous ! Super post !!!
That's a very young Loretta Young with her then husband Grant Withers near the end of the film. Fascinating to see all these beautiful actresses, some at the beginning of their careers.
I should mention that Freeman Lang, the bald man at the microphone in the first part with KFWB announcer Bill Ray, was the emcee for the majority of early radio broadcasts of movie premieres between 1927 and 1935, though Bill Ray did many on KFWB. I can't identify the radio announcer in the middle of this film, but it doesn't look like Charlie Wellman to me. Bill Ray of KFWB is seen at the microphone again toward the end of the film. Maybe searching a newspaper on these dates might give details on the radio station and announcers for each premiere broadcast on radio.
That was Grant Withers with Claire Windsor at about 2:06! And I saw Edward Nugent with Douglas Fairbanks Jr & Joan Crawford at 8:19. But the weirdest omission has to be Ben Lyon, who is with Bebe Daniels at 7:56. He’d been a leading man for years at this point! They got married the following year.
'Luis B Mayer' LOL Never knew the old devil was Hispanic. Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown glimpsed. Founding fathers of the classic musical- Freed took it through 30 years from 'The Broadway Melody' to 'Gigi'. These late-1920s premieres are almost a wake for the Gatsby generation and its stars- so many were about to be crushed by 'Super Vitaphone productions', discovering the public did not want them when they talked. One is John Gilbert, the most notorious Sound casualty. Among the throng is a handful of usurpers and survivors: Crawford, Gary Cooper, Adolphe Menjou. But what would, for example, Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon have said had they known that they would become best known for a British radio sitcom?
Great find! Thanks for uploading. Love seeing Crawford at the very beginning of her huge stardom.
You can see Hearst duck out of camera range when Marion Davies comes on.
The guy at the microphone is Charlie Wellman, a local radio announcer and personality.
Doesn't look like Charlie Wellman to me.

Bessie Love won an Oscar nomination for this film. Just before she comes on, there's Gloria Swanson, who doesn't get named.
I thought that was Swanson! Great actress. The Queen of the Silent Screen.

@@drednm I didn't know that about Davies. I was just rhyming! 😃 All of those ladies are great, although I have not seen many Talmadge movies.
@@tomc8115 They actually refer to Davies as Queen of the Sreen in the short film PIRATE PARTY ON CATALINA. She's filmed with Cary Grant.
Joan Crawford looks great. Renée Adoree - so lovely. Gone way too early. Cool stuff!
Once I saw a bunch of Renée Adorée’s pawn tickets on eBay, from the months before she died. So sad. 😭

This is fabulous to see! When it stays, "Laura La Plante and Jack Mulhall" she is Dorothy Mackaill, not Laura La Plante.
Yup that's Dorothy Mackaill! I noticed that right off.
I was wondering why Laura wasn't her usual pretty self. Thanks for your info.

Bebe Daniels is with Ben Lyon in the second clip.
Her hubby IIRC

2:42 I believe that the correct name is *Mervyn* LeRoy (1900-1987).
Gloria Swanson always stunning

Awesome area.. and a lot of their looks are very contemporary. Lots of fur though.. that wouldn't work today unless faux fur.
Joan and Doug look so cute together. Eddie Nugent was so handsome (and maybe that's his wife? Not sure).

Norma Shearer is pretty as usual. The Queen of M~G~M.
Thelma Todd 12:14 (split second)
Who's the lady taking off her wrap to show off her dress? Could it be Jeanne Eagels?
Probably Not, Jeanne Eagels was would have been in NY (where she did her two Talkies) and on her death bed about this time period.

12:20 Is that Loretta Young?
Yes. I think the man behind her is her husband, Grant Withers. Not sure who the other woman is with them.
@@johnfd0210 It's not Nancy Carroll, is it?
@@johnfd0210 It is indeed young Loretta, Grant and Doris Dawson.
