- A video of harvesting Hen of the woods mushrooms 2016. Its early fall here in Minnesota but the Hen are popping. They have other name as well like Grifola Frondosa it's latin name. Also Maitake, sheeps head or rams head. They are a top notch choice edilbe and have amazing medicinal value. They are almost always found at the base ,of large oak trees september thru october. Thanks for watching please like, share and subscribe!
Great video. I'm from NE Ohio, and we get a lot of shrooms here, too. I looked and looked for a hen a couple of years ago but to no avail. Then, one night I was looking on the ground for my mother's keys that she thought she dropped, and I almost tripped over this huge hen; there was three of them! They came back the following year, but not last year. Low and behold, a couple of days ago, that same tree has about five baby hens surrounding it. I am stoked and can't wait to get my hands on them. However, I do worry that someone will beat me to it.
Didn't know they grew this early...thanks a ton.
One tip to pass along...don't soak them. An hour or so in salt-water to get any bugs out, but no more. They'll absorb it like a sponge, and soggy mushrooms aren't fun to cook.
We really enjoy watching your mushroom hunting vids! Awesome!
Outstanding! Finding Chanterelles and Corals but no Hens yet...any day now
Thanks for posting the vid !
Wow! Great video guys! I have never hunted them but hopefully get to this year.
I'm from the u.p. of Michigan, and I just hunt for morels mainly. That season ended in June for me, I'm jealous of you!
Hens should be popping in your neck of the woods anytime now! Thanks!
morels are good...hens are incredible.
Can't wait for summer😀got an awesome spot in mind
Nice shirt. Keep the videos comin!!
Great video... The Mycelium does not live from year to year.. What does is the Spore.. If the area supports the Mycelium and you leave enough mushrooms to drop spores you will see them from year to year...Depending on conditions to support the Mycelium The Mycelium is not part a a specific fungus and supports all fungus spores... You know those white fiborous or web looking growths under rotten vegetation ..
Another great video, thank you. I live up in B.C. and would be interested in know what your prices are like down there. I have trouble finding decent buyers that aren't out to rip you off. Thanks again, keep the faith, Billy
here you can expect to get 10 to 15 a lb for good quality stuff to a wholesaler
I'm lucky to get 8-10 and that Canadian Pesos,Thanks, Billy
Billy Proctor You're welcome pal
Great hunting, so can you clean and freeze them? Thanks for the video.
yup absolutely. I just freeze mine raw and vacuum pack
pre-cooking them all then freezing works well too. Saves you the trouble later....then you can just drop em in your soup or whatever...eazy peazy.
of course if you pre cook...you'll probly end up eating a lot of it :)
i found my first hen of the woods today, walking in a heavily wooded park. found two huge ones. Is it common for them to be full of bugs? they seemed a bit fragile when i picked them.. does that mean they are old? they still look white underneath, and brown on top.. i washed them to get the bugs off them.. they were like tiny little white larva.. maybe termites.. not sure. but they smell really good and have a strong mushroom aroma.
I just found 12 today but it’s my first time so I only picked one to see if I liked them, and yeah I do👀
dear hunter, what kind of bait(lure) at the beaver do You use?
Hello my friend, another poster mentioned about soaking the hens in salt water to remove bugs do you do this as well ? Also you mentioned about becoming certified , what does this certification permit you to do ? Indeed a great video , I am going to subscribe.
Hello Peter nice to meet you and thanks for subscribing! Hens so water up pretty bad so I never do this. I tear mine apart and clean the bugs and dirt away with a soft bristled brush. It certifies you to sell certain kinds of mushrooms to establishments and at farmers markets.
Thank you for the info ! Have a great day !
holy sheep shit brother....what do you do with it all? Sell it or keep it all? How do you store it if you keep it all? I wonder if we have that stuff here in Upper Michigan or the Chickens...I wish I knew what kind to forage...
I'm not sure about the UP but I know Michigan is full of many of the same choice edible mushrooms I pick. there are pages you can join also.
we live in the southwest. Please tell where you are so we can know if we can find them where we live. Thank you Bro!
I live in central Minnesota
please put this in your title or description. You put great info in your video. We are trying to find this in our area when it may not be where we live. Thank you!
We would also be interested in buying good quality fresh picked mushrooms from where you live.
