A little butter in a pan. Get it kinda brown, not burnt but, nutty. Mince some garlic and onion and fry it for a few seconds. Slice the shrooms up and throw em in there with some fresh thyme and S&P. Fresh ground pepper! Lots of it. Turn the heat to low and let em melt. When the water from the shroom is gone, hit it with some white wine, a lil fresh cream, and cook it till it coats the back of a spoon. Add you favorite pasta, toss with parm cheese, garnish with arugula or fresh spinach leafs...
I pick the Hen of the woods every year in RI and CT I get about 100 or so lbs a year. Where the pine trees mix with the oak I always find the most. All these years I have never picked the Chicken's I didn't know they were edible. I can't wait to try them next year. The Hens are great, I like to marinate them or mix with the brown oaks to make Sausage Peppers and Mushrooms. My family has been doing it since they came here in late 19th C. My father old them to restaurants. Thanks for posting
I live in Utah where we don’t have those lovely mushrooms especially Hen of the woods. I would love to connect and buy a 20 pound load of hens from you.
I am obsessed with mushrooms and mycology (as well as all holistic medicenes ,and wildcrafting) since I read about psilocyben and amanita muscara ,but I dont really like button mushrooms that people usually put on pizza , are the wild mushrooms "better " then the grocery store pizza mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) ,as in , is it likely that people who dont like the common mushrooms will like these more ?
Thank you for the video. Just scratching the surface with Mycology, but I think it's great that you take the time to shoot a video and share it with us. Saw some negativity with some of the comments and it's really amusing. They can't be really serious or they'd be pretty miserable human beings. Just probably trying to show off like children do at times.
wow! you can see a flash of the chicks once this video starts. i found my first chicken of the woods yesterday, watched some confirmation videos this morning, found a (vegetarian) recipe, and later i will go for the picking!
You can slice them and sautee them in butter in a skillet....they taste like steak! YUMMY. If you can find some Lions Mane mushrooms and toss them in....they taste like lobster and you can have a steak and lobster meal on mushrooms
I did. Just find an area with mature oak trees and you will be in a good spot. You may have to check 50 oaks before you find them. I would try the slopes at Granite Peak. Big oaks and I don't think anyone goes back there.
Chicken of the Woods and Hen of the Woods are just fine with me.I'll leave the scientific names for someone else. Thanks for a great video! I hunt mushrooms in south central Pennsylvania. I've never found the Hen....I love the Chicken. I got started on morels but have moved on and learned a lot along the way. UA-cam is an amazing resource.
found a huge patch last night... tho they weren't on the tree but RIGHT next to it about 2 feet away from the base, looks exactly like this chicken of the woods but im scared if its not the right one. quick response would be awesome, thank u
Oh wow! I have so many questions. How do we know that is not poisenous? Any mashroom growing off of a tree is edible? Does it have to be an oak tree? I see lots os mushrooms when I take my dog to the creek but I don't know which one is safe to eat? Are these mushroom nurtriotious? Thank you for the video.
@thewildwest1000 - Not sure. They're generally found on live and dead oaks, but can grow on many other hardwoods too. Thats for chickens. Hens only grow on oaks.
Oh wow! Those are amazing. I went hunting for edibles for my first time yesterday and found a sizable p0atch of chicken of the woods. It felt so awesome!
I'd need a picture to confirm, but chickens may appear to grow terrestrially (from soil) but they're likely attached to a tree root that is just below the surface. Since yours is close to a tree I'd bet this is the case. Please be 100% certain before consuming.
I found a cluster of chicken of the woods every bit as big if not bigger 2 yrs ago. I have read that they are highly prized but I didn't harvest them. I don't know enough about them yet. Could you make a video on how to cook chicken of the woods? And what are they worth per pound? thx
Can those mushrooms grow in Indiana? Are they out right now? Do they grow on white oaks or other types of oaks or only on red oaks? Can you sell them and for how much?
They are live oaks. Chickens can grow on dead or live trees. I'd plug dead trees. I'm not sure, but I think chickens are parasitic so they can kill treees.
what state are you in? I think here in Illinois the chicken of the woods would come a month or so before the hen of the woods they say...that's cool you have so many in that small area!
The use of english names are common among those whose interest in mushrooms extends only as far as being able to safely identify them for consumption. I've accomplish as much in this video, but thank you for suggestion, albeit the way in which you position them. God bless!
i dont know anything about mushrooms except i like them in soup , are the ones in this video good to eat and if so how do they taste, what is a good way to cook & serve them ? info for a novice--thanks
@myCreativeDifference Feel free to shoot me a video or photos and I can take a look. Hen's are very easy to identify and they really only have one false look alike - berkeley's poloypore. It stains black when you touch it and the fronds are very large compared with the multiple smaller to medium fronds on a hen. Google the false look alike and you'll see the difference, but I'm happy to help.
The wild mushrooms known as morels or dry land fish are so much better than those button shroons by far! I live in northeast Tn. and that is where i hunt them
I'll restrict my comment to part of your response "suppadiggy." There are no other mushrooms called Jack O' Lanterns in other regions of the country. When I provide an english name for a mushroom, I do so only when the english name is not used to identify other species. When there can be confusion, I use the latin or greek binomials. Feel free to peruse some of my other videos to see examples of this. God bless!
Man look at that aluminum uptake in that last tree in the sticks there from those damn chemtrails, just look at you redwoods around your town and notice the what appears to be white climbing up the trunk, well that's aluminum that has fallen from the sky hit the soil sense 96 and before in some places and that you can have tested for around 30 dollars, that being the bark if you don't believe this, so I wonder what the content of aluminum is in that chicken of the woods?
So by this logic you expect the genius and species to be written someplace on the specimen? Most people identify mushrooms by physical characteristics. I don't know anyone who asked a mushroom its scientific name before eating it.
Don't mean to sound like a moron can you eat those I've seen them before all the time. in the woods. I live in north eastern North Carolina and there are plenty of hens an chicks around here
Not every mushroom growing from trees are edible. Some are quite deadly actually. I know this mushroom is edible because I can discern all the characteristics that validate or confirm it is an edible mushroom. Chickens can be found on several different species of deciduous trees. Yes, these mushrooms have many health benefits.
Jack o' lantern mushroom are what they are commonly called, it's an easy identification name, because the mushroom's gills glow at night, I don't see why you got so hostile about it.
Love Freedom gotta wash them with bugs or no bugs and it it's been eaten off of by buys then it's probably not good enough for harvest but it's always best to clean them with or without buys

Man I could see that chicken at the 2 second mark what a find!
I was on a scenic train ride in Maryland, looked out the window and I swear I saw a chicken of the wood the size of a 55gal drum.
This continues to be a favorite Mushroom videos on You tube. Thank You

wow..Ive never seen that before..where is this?
You are so lucky. Where I live it's little to none.
Those trees will be dead soon enough. Once a mushroom fungus gets ahold of it, its most likely doomed

i found my first chicken of the woods yesterday, watched some confirmation videos this morning, found a (vegetarian) recipe, and later i will go for the picking!
Yes. The edges of each frond are very tender and cook like other mushrooms. I just cut them up into manageable sizes for cooking.
You can slice them and sautee them in butter in a skillet....they taste like steak! YUMMY. If you can find some Lions Mane mushrooms and toss them in....they taste like lobster and you can have a steak and lobster meal on mushrooms
Damn! Chicken of the Woods motherload! Do these grow in Nebraska?
THEY LOOK SO HAPPY. :D
I did. Just find an area with mature oak trees and you will be in a good spot. You may have to check 50 oaks before you find them. I would try the slopes at Granite Peak. Big oaks and I don't think anyone goes back there.
Wow! Great find! I'm sure you enjoyed them!:)

WOW, nice find man! I found my first chicken of the woods today in my local park, I think it was inhabiting a cherry tree?! Gonna post a short vid
found a huge patch last night... tho they weren't on the tree but RIGHT next to it about 2 feet away from the base, looks exactly like this chicken of the woods but im scared if its not the right one. quick response would be awesome, thank u
Great Find

So they can really vary in color hey? Yellow, orange grayish white? I have to send you a video of mine an see if you think its a hen of the woods
@thewildwest1000 - Not sure. They're generally found on live and dead oaks, but can grow on many other hardwoods too. Thats for chickens. Hens only grow on oaks.
gorgeous mushrooms. hopefully i can find some of these in the next year or two
I'm not sure how old they are, but they're very mature oaks growing in an "old growth" forest.
Beautiful finding
Totally want to nom those orange chicken mushrooms! Dang they're easy to spot, too.
Oh wow! Those are amazing. I went hunting for edibles for my first time yesterday and found a sizable p0atch of chicken of the woods. It felt so awesome!
How do you cook these chickens? Do they have turkeys too?
I'd need a picture to confirm, but chickens may appear to grow terrestrially (from soil) but they're likely attached to a tree root that is just below the surface. Since yours is close to a tree I'd bet this is the case. Please be 100% certain before consuming.

Wish i had one mushroom off it. I cant find them any where around me. They log everything.
Can those mushrooms grow in Indiana? Are they out right now? Do they grow on white oaks or other types of oaks or only on red oaks? Can you sell them and for how much?

Wisconsin
Yes they grow in Indiana. Hens will grow on any oak species and Chickens grow on just about any hardwood - dead or alive.
You know what they call bats, right? Chicken of The Cave.
That's an adrenaline rush just watching!
No, you're thinking of Jack O' Lantern mushrooms.
I didn't know you could eat those I see ones that look exactly like those all the time when I go hiking in my state of Oregon.
Can we grow the hen of the to our garden?
My foraging skills are much better than my culinary skills. I'd check other videos or books for how to cook.
Okay so are those Oak trees dead?; and being taken over by the chickens?; or alive?
(I have plug spawn...)
The use of english names are common among those whose interest in mushrooms extends only as far as being able to safely identify them for consumption. I've accomplish as much in this video, but thank you for suggestion, albeit the way in which you position them. God bless!
what an amzing find! Have fun eating them!
i dont know anything about mushrooms except i like them in soup , are the ones in this video good to eat and if so how do they taste, what is a good way to cook & serve them ? info for a novice--thanks
What part of the country are you in?
how would you eat this thing? It looks like a fungus.. like mushrooms. Would you prepare it similarly?
Nice Haul!!
They mainly grow in Wisconsin i have oak trees in my back yard they are Covered in hens!
I wanna live in your woods!
What is the difference between the chicken and hen?
can you find these in ontario canada ?
Nice find.
@myCreativeDifference Feel free to shoot me a video or photos and I can take a look. Hen's are very easy to identify and they really only have one false look alike - berkeley's poloypore. They fruit from spring through fall. I doubt the timing is much different between our areas.
NICE!!! How exciting!!!
I'm not sure what you're looking for specifically - at a genetic level, physical characteristics, growing locations?
The wild mushrooms known as morels or dry land fish are so much better than those button shroons by far! I live in northeast Tn. and that is where i hunt them
can u trip on that??? O.o
Jealous. Just curious what state you live in?
Are they poisonous or can you eat them.
good haul in small area!!!
Hello
I would like to ask, are all those mushrooms that growing in the trees safe?thanks
They are alive. Chickens will associate with live and dead trees.
what is best time to start hunting them in v.a
Top comment it right on- chicken and hen do sound stupid.
I'll restrict my comment to part of your response "suppadiggy." There are no other mushrooms called Jack O' Lanterns in other regions of the country. wow I see this stuff all the time. i'm going to do some more research and then see how it tastes
If send you a picture of a mushroom can you tell me what kind it is
My dad loves them
Did you grow this intentionally?
No he did not
Man look at that aluminum uptake in that last tree in the sticks there from those damn chemtrails, just look at you redwoods around your town and notice the what appears to be white climbing up the trunk, well that's aluminum that has fallen from the sky hit the soil sense 96 and before in some places and that you can have tested for around 30 dollars, that being the bark if you don't believe this, so I wonder what the content of aluminum is in that chicken of the woods?
could you send me some spores on a pice of paper? if you find this year too? i think of sending it by airmail in an envelope :)
Is it fresh?
Joke.
What state are you in?
wow a persion who actuley noes what chicken of the wood is. most people think selfate mushrooms are chicken
These grow on my tree in my backyard
So by this logic you expect the genius and species to be written someplace on the specimen? Most people identify mushrooms by physical characteristics. I don't know anyone who asked a mushroom its scientific name before eating it.

I just call them "good eating"
Jack o' lantern mushroom are what they are commonly called, it's an easy identification name, because the mushroom's gills glow at night, I don't see why you got so hostile about it.
Northern Wisconsin
I just freaked out because mine had tons of bugs in them!!! YUCK
Love Freedom gotta wash them with bugs or no bugs and it it's been eaten off of by buys then it's probably not good enough for harvest but it's always best to clean them with or without buys
Bugs my bad
...only if it is edible
what state?
Wisconsin

Wausau, WI
That's terrible, with mushrooms though, you need to know exactly what you are picking, no doubt can be present.
Check it out.
Not really. Becareful of any growing on conifers. I've read this is a poisonous lookalike.
No.
they look like pancakes!
