Bad Things About the Jeep Gladiator after 6 Months of Ownership - Still Love It - But NOT Perfect

  • The Gladiator is as perfect a Jeep as you can find, but it is not perfect. I wanted to share some of the reasons it didn't hit the mark and how they can improve it as there are quite a few items. I still love the Jeep JT Gladiator Rubicon and would buy it again in a heartbeat... but I do feel there are some things that are not acceptable for a vehicle that is this expensive. I want to reiterate, i would buy this thing again and you can watch the video on why I love this Jeep Gladiator as it will be released soon. If you are asking yourself, "Should I buy a Jeep Gladiator?" or "is the Jeep Gladiator worth it?" I hope this video helps you get to a firm decision! Best of luck!

Here is that Antenna in case you wanted it, again, you will need to grind it or use sand paper to make the base smaller on the antenna, otherwise it won't fit, but once you do, i like the look and the car wash experience much better though I don't use my radio and if i did, this would not be a good antenna to have as it barely does anything: amzn.to/3enr86v

You have some pretty high expectations from a Jeep.. But given the price tag, I can understand where you're coming from. Absolutely love mine.. But I've owned jeeps for the past 15 years. Also went from a 95 YJ to a 2020 JT.. So this is luxury to me 😄

I'm thankful for your complaining! The only Jeep I've ever owned was Cherokee and it was 1989 model. I've given up on the Rubicon model and just spec'ed out a Sport S model with the features I wanted from the factory instead. I'm just waiting a little longer in case the price drops when Ford announces the Bronco lineup. I'd rather have the pickup bed though. Thanks for your negative words on the matter! Everyone wants some polished review rather than true real world reviews. Thank you!

You are welcome! But I will say, if you do any off-roading you will not regret getting the Rubicon as it blows the sport and overland out of the water... but if you really just going to tow and use it as a daily driver then the Sport S is going to be fantastic! I would imagine the Rubicon will likely hold its value a bit more but at the same time you're paying more for it so I'm not sure that's worth much...

So it's obvious that you don't know how the tonneau cover works. Once you roll it all the way out then the hooks go in, you have to press down on the top of the cover, pressing down on the bar that runs across the last bar in the back. That will lock it. Give a good whack. I learned that at the dealership. You can not lift mine up like your's is doing after you lock it

My Bluetooth in my JL works fine. Bring yours to the dealer. It’s under warranty. The bed cover, is a bed cover. Get a hard cover if you want security. Get a 18” antenna. You will still have reception. Jeep windscreens break. Your new one is going to break as well. That is why you have glass coverage. You never will be able to track straight with the new JL/JT steering gear. The support bracket from Polyperformance really helps. It will reinforce the sector shaft of the steering box. Wind noise is stupid loud on the JL/JT. You need to drop your windscreen and make sure the foam installed isn’t folded over on itself. Then adjust the hinges. Noise will improve drastically.

hey, fold down the windshield and you will notice the sensor for the cruise control, is mounted to the windshield frame not the glass, you should also have a cover for it IF you were to even drive with the frame down. the glass has a small defroster grid to keep it clear in winter.

I agree with the antenna, I noticed it on the wrangler. But I don't take my new cars to drive thru washes for the first few years. I get them hand washed. You are right about new people joining the Jeep family need to be aware of what they are buying. Because the most expensive doesn't mean the best vehicle for YOU. There are different axle options and off-road packages with tire options that will affect the vehicle. Any modification will sacrifice something out of the vehicle. I think what you are trying to summarize is most expensive doesn't mean the best. I do love this truck though. Matches my other Jeeps.

On my tonneau cover I used ratchet straps on the tailgate end, and hooked around the upper metal frame and connected to the cargo hooks on each end. Had people trying to break into cars in my neighborhood. Its now secure that way.
The heating system seems to be designed to have the freedom panels off to work properly. Otherwise it is 30 C or too cold. No incremental adjustment. Had it in for service. Just a Jeep thing.
When you get your windshield installed get gorilla film installed to prevent cracking. Or a new tougher windshield has come out, but is $699 US. Mopar sells gorilla glass windshields but more expensive than regular one..

OK, I'm a Jeep owner for years and currently own a '21 Jeep truck. The audio stuff.....eh. Not a biggy, but understandable, (I'm still on a flipper). Tonneau cover?, this is unacceptable. I was surprised to discover this design flaw. The antenna, well I always hand wash, so not an issue. BTW, none of the shorties work well. The windshield, back off son. I do not tailgate. I understand that when in traffic vehicles bunch up and stones get thrown, but back off. BTW, when you do, be ready to have someone up your tailpipe. The steering, dude. It's called a live axle. This type of suspension works great off road, but on pavement, not so much. It requires a lot of driver input. (Officer I'm not drunk, It's a Jeep). Jeep tried to get the best of both worlds. They primarily market these trucks as "trail rated", especially the Rubicons... (what pea brained said). All things considered, you put out a great and honest review man. I dig my JTR heaps and will never lift it. I ordered it the way I wanted it. It's way more capable than youtube vids give it credit for being. Knowledge and common sense overcome the need for a lift............................Cheers.....G

Dude, I just took my new-to-me JT Gladiator (2020 with 4300 mi, bought used, fully stock) on a 2200 mile road trip and it was comfortable as can be. And I came from owning a 2019 Ram Rebel which was quite arguably the most comfortable roadtrip vehicle I've ever owned. I mean is it a little more noisy? Sure. But I've owned way loud vehicles than this. Way more uncomfortable vehicles than this. And yet, this thing is a one of a kind off-road, mid-sized truck that has solid axles front and rear, can be lifted with ease relative to trucks with IFS, and can take it's doors and top off just like the wranglers can. Is $60k too much to ask for all this? Maybe, if a luxury truck is all you were looking for. But this is unique and that's why they think they can charge what they do. (BTW I only paid $49k for mine used so I'm not feeling like I spent too much on it as some other people might). Great review btw. You explained your gripes with it, clearly and backed it up. I do appreciate that. I just have to opine. Lol. I'm glad you said you would still buy it, even knowing what you do now.

I just want to go on record to say.. the reason Jeep doesn’t fix these issues (noise/seats/windshield).. is because guys like this will line up and pay exorbitant prices regardless. So, business is business. Why would I spend money to fix issues with my product when plenty of people (guys who want a rugged, “masculine” vehicle) will give me full price for my product as is (without the effort and/or additional cost)? It’s a no brainer. If everyone (guys who buy Jeeps) would take a stand and refuse to buy any Jeep due to these issues, you’d see them resolved quickly. But, unfortunately, that will never happen. I mean, come on.. you pay $50-60K, and you can’t even make a successful phone call? The windshield cracks that easily? The seats aren’t comfortable? The steering doesn’t feel solid? How ridiculous.
By the way.. thanks for this video. This made me finally realize that Jeep isn’t for me. You’re right.. if you off-road frequently, this is a good choice. But, you made some pretty good points concerning some valid issues with a vehicle that is completely overpriced, even at base model level. I was debating between this and a used 2015 Tacoma, since that’s the most reliable year. Looks like I’ll have to go with the Tacoma. I’ll save a ton of money and have a vehicle I can count on for years to come. Not so sure I can say the same about a Jeep.

JT Rubi owner. My truck also wandered at the beginning, adjusted the steering box and it now tracks straight and true just like any other vehicle. I guess I'm lucky in that I don't have any wind noise issues unless I put the Bestop half soft top on it. I'm on the phone a lot as I drive and I've never had any issues. You may want to take it to the dealer if it's too loud as there may be a warantee-able issue there. This is my first Jeep coming from a Toyota and Lexus background, also have a Ram Power Wagon but I'm fine with the product and it's price point. Driving anything with a straight front axle will be different than independent front suspension. Imagine how many vehicles are bought, and the first thing they get is a VHF two way radio antenna, longer than what you took off, and they will have a long antenna for lifetime of the vehicle. The noise thing, ok I have to agree with that. Better insulation package needs to be an option on the solid tops, especially for north America 🥶 yup yup yup!

Mid sized trucks, jeeps, etc will always track off on the highways. The full size traffic, semis, etc make depressions on the highway. The track width isn’t as wide on a mid size truck, or Jeep. So you will always have to fight staying in a groove or another, while the other side isn’t in the normal groove.
I’ve had lifted trucks for 29 years, Rangers, Titans, F-350’s. So pay attention to the grooves on the highways you travel.

In certain areas, i couldn't have a soft cover, hence my thought on that, but to each his own! If i lived in a quiet suburb with no theft crime, hell yes i would have a softcover! they are great.

You bought the wrong truck. Time to get a F250 diesel King Ranch long bed. Jeeps are not meant to be a work vehicle. I can’t understand why people spend $65k on a Rubicon Model then swap suspension components, change lockers.

We have the same truck, about the steering wheel and the noise, it’s the size of the wheels and wrangler based interior construction. You sacrifice these for performance.

Those are good points you mentioned but I guess it just sounded like a lot of complaints instead of "know what you are buying" Every vehicle is a compromise so to get a Gladiator it's more on the off road spectrum of the scale than comfortable get around town side of the scale. You have other jeeps so you should have better incite than those who don't or have never experienced it. The Gladiator hits exactly what it's supposed to do.

I knew what I was getting into and most people probably know these things but these are missed that could be made better if they want to stay on top of the off-road market. Other makers are now creating off road vehicles and they hit some of these misses. I mean, why would this truck not be a turbo? Makes no sense to me... It would help fuel economy a lot and deliver the power everyone wants off-road. Just a lot of dumb things about this truck, but the truck is better than most.

Never said I hated it... Actually live it and I'd spend it again and will use all the extra features too. Loving that adaptive cruise! Watch the video on why it's amazing... I'm just sharing my experience. if that means I got played and shouldn't have a Jeep then so be it. I love my Jeep and support Jeep all the way but I'm also going to be honest and tell you how I truly feel. They could do better... Still nothing on the market like it and better than anything on the market.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head. I traded in my '16 pickup on a new '17 JK unlimited, then traded in the Jeep on a new Colorado because I missed my pickup. Now I'm thinking of trading in the truck for a Gladiator, cause I miss my jeep. I think that makes me the perfect candidate for the Gladiator. One of my complaints with my JK was it was a little rough as a daily driver after a couple of years. The noise, hard to talk on the Bluetooth, it wasn't the best vehicle for long trips, etc. but man do I love having a jeep. I was hoping the '20 Gladiator was a little more quiet and comfortable than the '17 JK, but maybe it isn't. I haven't had the chance to test drive one yet. I will just probably go for the Sport S, can't afford the other ones. Thanks for your comments.

  • @af22raptor23503

Is this your FIRST JEEP?? Sounds like Gladiator needs to be CHECK at the DEALERSHIP to check the Alignment and the Bluetooth! The Hard Top does NEED the Sound Dampening Headliner that will help with your NOISE Issues! YOU can put 35 inch tires without a lift on the Rubicon but a 2 inch lift will let you go to 37 but if you are talking 4 inch lift you are heading to 40 inch tires which means NEW Axles plus a TOTAL Upgrade of your Suspension SYSTEM! I am not familiar with the Rubicon Launch?? is that a package for your region or something your Dealership put together?
I just purchased a 2020 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Hemi V8 in February but my wife want to use it as her car so her Liberty is going to her niece and I am waiting for the Mojave Gladiator to come out so I can test drive and compare it to the Rubicon Gladiator and we will be picking from one of those 2 models, I think the Mojave is better suited for the Stuff here in FL!

Good video but I think you should have bought a power wagon, samd elec locking diffs, same elec disconnect front sway bar, comes with a front winch optional, is a 6.4 Hemi 2500 chassis rig.
Would have been better for your work and would have had more power as well as be quieter.
Unless you wanted the smaller platform with the removable tops and doors.

I’ve had my eye on one of these (despite the emptiness of my wallet). The biggest disappointment to me about one of these things is that there’s no diesel option. With Cummins’ relationship with Chrysler and the amount of people swapping 4bt’s into jeeps, you’d think they’d be all about it. Could be that the disparity between diesel and gas prices and the fact that newer production diesels require so much more EPA equipment. I just prefer a diesel...

    • @BustMonk

Couldn't agree more! I would be so happy if they just throw a turbo option in there for this V6... that would be a night and day difference and would catch this engine up with the others in the market like the ecoboost.

Wranglers/gladiators are 100% overpriced. Jeep sells their other models are much lower margins, because they know people spend ludicrous amounts of money on the Wranglers/Gladiators. Shout out to everyone who loves their Jeeps, but I could never spend $60,000 of my own money on these. The value just isn’t there for me.
