    Both 10mm and 45acp are great rounds. 45 gets my vote for everyday carrying, bigger initial hole and less penetration so you don't have to worry about hitting your target and the 4 people through the wall behind them. 45 ammo is also easier to come by. 10mm for a woods defense gun due to the penetration benefits, better ballistics and more rounds in a similar size mag compared to 45. Both great rounds! Thanks Hickok 👍

      You can get toned down 10mm perfectly made for defense. Just like you can get hotter or different bullet designs for 45acp for woods carry. I love both load, but the 10mm might be more versatile.

    • @Sam-K
      @Sam-K 3 місяці тому

      Ten is overall a much superior round than ol' 45s and I'm glad it's no longer the black sheep it used to be. It's getting more and more popular, and for good reasons.
      It can reach or even surpass the muzzle velocity of old 7.62 Tokarevs (depending on the firearm) while delivering an almost twice as heavy round.
      That's a heavier punch than a 357 Mag.
      The reason I brought up Tokarev is because it remains a highly popular round in Asia and was used by over 50 militaries at its peak. A great round for conceal carry that can punch through most light body armors.
      Personally, the 10mm auto is the spiritual successor of 7.62 Tokarev and that's a massive compliment in my book.

    My biggest issue with anti-gun nuts is that they have an issue with all gun owners, 99.9999% of which spend their time doing exactly this. Having innocent fun shooting watermelons, targets, etc. Most of us wouldn't dream of breaking the law with our weapons, or finding excuses to shoot people. Even if it's mainly because we don't want to lose our rights to bear arms, that should be good enough. If we're wrong for enjoying guns b/c of a few idiots, where are all anti-car and anti-beer people, every time a drunk driver kills innocent people? End of rant, keep up the great work, Mr. Hickok.

    • @pappapinskie5883
      @pappapinskie5883 6 років тому +35

      The problem is that they aren’t using logic in their argument at all. They’re giving into political emotionalism & fear mongering. Alcohol, for example, can be used both responsibly & irresponsibly, just like guns. They can get people killed, both by poisoning and by drunk driving and other actions. Yet, even though alcohol kills way more people than guns do, even localizing that just to the states, you won’t hear people screaming for alcohol prohibition. But, if the politicians & media were fueling that argument, you’d see a new movement of anti-alcohol protests, regardless of the fact that prohibition brought (and always brings) more violence and death.

Enjoyable to shoot, easy to control, and i didn't notice much difference between mine and my buddy's G-21. I gradually stepped up a bit to some harder hitting stuff and, immediately, i felt the difference. Oh boy. Some buffalo bore through my glock was astoundingly powerful. 45 is cheaper and more widely available. You can get 45acp +p with same energy as 10mm. Wider diameter bullets, like the 45, dump it’s energy quicker into a target since it has a larger surface area. Which is what you want in a pistol caliber.

  • @markharris4260
    @markharris4260 3 роки тому +7

    10 mm has more power and punch but a .45 ACP+P will make up for the difference , as I personally wouldn't feel under gunned with a .45 ACP on any day ! If you want speed and velocity go with .9 mm +P and remember if you want to shoot the +P ammo a lot , change the slide spring and look into any other necessary options that would be required for stronger pressures !

You have real education here especially the part about the court. As a former cop, I cannot tell you how many justified shootings I have seen where a misinformed shooter hanged themselves in court. I would love to see you cover cartridge choice and what is less likely to cause over penetration on the street. So many have this idea that a 45ACP is bad because it doesn't penetrate hard surfaces that well. A confrontation is a body to body at a distance of a few feet of an attacker. Chuck Norris may need to shoot through windows but in court they will say why didn't you duck out of the way? Why did you shoot them through a windshield? if so why didn't you drive away? They don't care that maybe you were stuck in the mud. All a prosecutor is concerned with is why.

    I bought a 10mm from STI (Double-stack, 15 rounds) when they first came out; in fact, I pressured Dave Skinner (owner of STI) to make a 10mm STI Edge available. (He had been selling them to police departments in the Far East ... they really like the 10mm!)
    Why did I want a 10mm STI EDGE?
    I got a double-stack magazine with about 17 rounds capacity, and at least the power factor of a .45ACP.
    I bought it for USPSA competition, and as such I could hand-load ammunition a little bit lighter than the .45 ... closer to the .40 caliber. And realistically, the .10mm should be compared to its closer cousin the .40 Slow-and-Wimpy cartridge than the .45 ACP..
    I bought the STI 10mm because I compete in USPSA (Practical Pistol) matches, and I like that the 10mm allows more cartridges in a magazine (10 round .45ACP magazines are not commonly available in double stack; 10 is the limit, while 10mm magazines allow either 17 or 18 rounds in a magazine, depending on the manufacturer and the follower).
    I WOULD have bought a .40S&W, but at the time there were a lot of KaBOOM! incidents with .40S&W cartridges because the pistols did not typically have fully supported chambers; the guns were blowing up because there was very little 'extra support" in the body of the shell, near the rim; and without fully supported chambers, the KaBOOMs were predictable.
    I had to pay extra for the 10mm, and the ammunition is almost prohibitively expensive .. even brass costs between 13 and 15 cents a round. But it was worth it. The 10mm has a much stronger "mass of brass" at the base than does the .40S&W/
    I've retired from competition (my eyes went bad and I couldn't seen iron sights) but I keep the 10mm around for home defense. Double the magazine capacity, power equal to or better than the .45, and the speed of reloading a double-stack magazine are all major advantages with the 10mm. Plus the ergonomics of a double-stack are better for those of us who have large hands.
    Oh, and the 10mm Still Kicks A&&!
    People say that, as a defensive weapon, the pistol allows you time to get to your rifle, or your shotgun. With the 10mm and huge magazine capacity coupled with a fast reaload, the rifle or shotgun might actually be nothing more than an afterthought.

    You can see in the side by side the recoil difference (in a well practiced shooter, recoil is more visible in novice shooters).
    The best ammo for carry is a simple hierarchy - aim, power, capacity in that order.
    Capacity is important (more shots than you need is always better than fewer).
    Power is more important than capacity because most shooting situations don't require shooting and those that do seldom require many rounds, so stopping in fewer rounds is better than having the same power over more rounds.
    Aim, however, is the most important because shot placement is always the key factor for stopping a threat. Therefore, that becomes a cap on power to what you can control and put on target quickly and accurately.
    So, figure out what the most powerful round you can shoot well is, then choose a platform that maximizes the capacity for that round (or course, again controlled for open or concealed carry).
    That is THE answer to the caliber fight - and it is different from person to person.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  8 років тому +23

      And what makes it even easier for all of us these days is that the legitimate research shows more and more that the difference between the effects of quality rounds of 9mm, 40, and .45 is negligible. Placement and multiple hits seem to be proving more important than minimal difference in caliber.

    • @oaksparoakspar3144
      @oaksparoakspar3144 8 років тому +5

      True, but it still applies for low calibers (.22, .25, .32, etc), .380 v. 9mm, and .38 v. .357 - so there are places where power differences are power differences.
      My wife pushes herself to get up to .380, but I carry everything up to .45 from time to time (9mm most commonly). The only time I ever fell under gunned is if I'm carrying the .32 - but for times I really want to be invisibly armed, that thing is an answer.

      Oakspar Oakspar That's why I'll end up carrying 9mm over .45ACP. Less recoil, meaning I can be more accurate with the same amount of practice. As well as cost of ammo for said practice. .45ACP is expensive in most cases compared to 9mm.

    Thanks for another great video. An efficient comparison between the 10mm and 45acp. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. All of the gun shops have 1911s in 10mm and it seems to be a very popular cartridge. If you want to buy a 1911, sellers might act surprised you really want it in 45acp. I carry a 44mag revolver in shoulder holster in the field, which many argue is not enough gun for bears. All I know is, with the hot bear loads, 44mag is as much gun as I can handle and kicks way way harder than the 10mm hot loads in this video. However the big appeal to the 10mm and its popularity in Alaska is due to capacity. 6-44mag in the revolver vs 9-10mm in the 1911 vs 16-10mm in the G20. Many feel 6-44mag rounds vs 16-10mm rounds is a non issue and want the high capacity. My co-worker just bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 double stack in 10mm with 17 round capacity. I am not arguing, but if you only have one shot at a charging bear, which do you want?

    Ballistics nerd here and the key to comparing calibers is finding the optimum weight per caliber, for example a 45acp is much more deadly in a 185 grain then a 230 cause in the 185 your getting the FPS you need and more importantly a lot more energy! But the 10mm in 165 is just superior it’s a brutal man stopping combo of speed and energy

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  4 роки тому

      Yep, as long as one practices enough with those light, faster bullets to shoot them really accurately and know where they hit. I've always preferred "heavy-for-caliber" bullets. The shootability in follow-up shots, recoil, and point of impact is more desirable for me.
      Unfortunately, a lot of people research and study and get into their head which is the "best" bullet or caliber ballistically (10mm, .357 SIG, .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum), but they barely practice enough to shoot even a .22 Long Rifle accurately under stress. Meanwhile, they feel really well-armed carrying some big bad gun or caliber that will cause them to jerk the trigger when they shoot it so badly that they will almost shoot their toes off instead of any potential attacker. :-)

    • @louv4437
      @louv4437 4 роки тому +1

      hickok45 just remember you want the most FPS and Most energy possible per caliber that combo is what will stop the threat so it’s the lighter bullets within each caliber line that will work best. If you prefer a heavy bullet carry a 45acp in a 185 or 10mm in a 165

    I prefer a 45 but would say the 10mm is prob a better round. However the 10mm has much more recoil and is harder to shoot fast accurately compared to the 45. I would go as far as saying the 40. Also has more recoil and is harder to shoot fast and accurate compared to the 45.

    I've hunted wild hogs with my 10 mm Glock 20 (using cheap ammo) along side my friend trying out his .45 ACP carbine (also using cheap ammo). Despite the longer barrel of the .45 ACP, the 10 mm was hands down better at dropping hogs.

    Thinking about the Ruger SR1911 in 10mm. I have the .45 and love it. I took a large doe with the SR1911 .45 last year. It was a 15yd shot in the neck. But would love to step up the distance and take a shoulder shot. So the 10 sounds like a good choice. Thanks again for great and informative videos hickok45.

  • @spatin51
    @spatin51 6 років тому +163

    Why not carry the G20 in the woods? A .45 is a good round against human targets, but the 10mm gives you a bit more against 4 legged critters with big teeth.

    • @WhoWouldWantThisName
      @WhoWouldWantThisName 5 років тому +19

      I think this is the biggest reason for the come back of the 10mm. People started seeing the 10, especially the new Glocks, as a great option to a .44 magnum revolver in the woods, and they can always use it in more urban areas for defense against humans too. It's lighter to carry than a model 29 (S&W that is) and more compact.

    • @midwestbd7144
      @midwestbd7144 5 років тому +17

      WhoWouldWantThisName that’s exactly why I bought my 10mm, the .44 was way too heavy to carry and wasn’t practical in most situations, I can use the 10mm for just about anything.

    • @texasbeast239

      Yeah, somebody recently used the line with me: "9mm for the hoods, 10mm for the woods".
      But I corrected him: "10mm defense round for the hoods, 10mm hunting round for the woods".

    • @texasbeast239
      @texasbeast239 4 роки тому +9

      @Tony B - Nonsense. You've been buying into gun mythology.
      Sure, 10 HUNTING rounds would rip right through a person. But 10 DEFENSIVE rounds wouldn't. 10 penetrates very deeply, but it still expands and then stops after about 16 to 18 inches in ballistics gel, which is the ideal depth according to the FBI. Even then, it barely has any velocity at the end of that trajectory, so it doesn't pooch out of the back of the gel with enough oomph to wound anymore.
      That's exactly why they chose it as their official caliber, once upon a time. It is the veritable sweet spot for defensive handgun ammunition.

    .45 acp is popular because it has good stopping power compared to the 9x19 and .40 s&w. The other reason is its light recoil (less than the .40). But it is very limited. The 10mm has more kick but less limitations.

    Thanks for this video... that being said I love both calibers. I think it's a matter of what you need and what you're comfortable with(wouldn't feel out gunned with either caliber) I like the versatility of the 10mm and I like the .45 for the fact that it's one of the most iconic guns in history! I have owned a 10mm since 1987 it has been a very reliable and trustworthy caliber.... I also have owned a .45 since about the same time.... according what your purpose is... is what you carry...anyway really enjoyed the video!

    The G20 is a beast for sure. I set mine up for deer hunting. I’m a vertically challenged fella with small hands so it’s definitely a handful for me! I had the pleasure of meeting Greg (Hickok45) once at a gun show. I could not believe how tall this fella is! His hand makes two of mine! He was nice enough to pose with me for a photo, I look like a child next to him. So with that said I would imagine the G20 fits his hand comfortably!

      I personally daily carry a G29sf, which is Glock’s subcompact 10mm and absolutely love it. Definitely a dense lil thing, but still lighter than the G20.
      Definitely recommend Pearce Grip mag floors with the pinky extension lips on em if you have bigger hands, but even without those, it’s totally manageable.

      Essentially this is hiker friendly versus a nice revolver which tends to be heavier and also slower loading. This is likely easier for most to shoot versus .44 magnum.
