    Just bought one with an Olson Ruby Nozzle. Haven't received it yet. Very good production! You are extremely informative! I have destroyed a FlashForge, a Monoprice, TWO different XYZ's and an Anycubic Mega I3. I hope this Pulse will make MY pulse go up! I guess I'm a little hard on machines. I run them constantly pumping out my projects. I've graduated from the toys. I hope this will be a tool.

    I find the Z probe for a z home switch a bit wierd. Other than that, it looks like a very well calibrated machine and it is cool to see that the bowden setup and stepper dampeners don't impact negatively print quality if the machine is well calibrated. Interesting decisions from Matterhackers. I am making my own custom machine so I am not interested in the machine itself, but interesting review and a good video with information on the changes the machine had in 2-3 months time.

    Is it possible for you to do a video about what you changed in the G code to get the results you ended up with? Possibly with a free slicer? I have ordered a Pulse and I'm a rookie with slicers so if I get bad prints from MatterControl I would like to know how to improve. TIA!

    Thanks for the detail review. However, I have the pulse xe, and I'm wondering how you handle the bed leveling in Simplify3d in the start g-code. Any help would be appreciated!

    when you say mm a second, which simplify settings are you referring to? Is that the default speed or the xy movement speed in the speed tab?

    Hmm it would be nice if it had a removable build plate like the mk3, a bigger print volume like the cr10 and standard stuff like power resume, filament sensor. I think the cr10s and mk3 are a better deal if customer support is not important. Also the price is a bit high imho for a prusa clone. 500 sounds more right to me. Love the looks of it.. It has a bit of a raw look to it. Nice!

    So let me share my Pulse story. I eagerly purchased a pulse with the bond tech extruder and hardened steel nozzle. When I got it it didn't have the auto leveling. I had all the same starting problems and sent it back once and when I got it back had several good prints before problems again. I wish I had seen your review. My problem was I was determined to get matter control to work. After months of problems I just didn't have the knowledge to troubleshoot or the time. I will say that Matterhackers was great in all aspects. I agreed this just wasn't the printer for me at the time. They were always patient, and honestly with that kind of support I would absolutely buy a printer from them again. The quality of the good prints I got off this printer were amazing. Both in pla and PETG. I just stuck with matter control and mostly used pc control because I had to leave machine unattended often and wanted to have a way to cancel a print. (I monitored over cam)
    Knowing that it just takes some more tweaking is nice. I do wish it was consistent for me with matter control I really liked the software. I may stick with a cr-10 for a while.

    As someone who uses 3D printing for my small business and youtube channel for all of my Props, this printer looks fantastic.
    Not sure of why so many people complain about the price. You pay for convenience. If I buy something from matter hackers I can expect consistent (and might I add amazing customer service), a local retailer and something I don't have to worry about.
    Personally? I would rather spend my time printing instead of building and trouble shooting a kit.
    My preference and I think this or the XE will be my next buy for sure.

    Cosa mi consigli di acquistare (in sostituzione della Alfawise U20 che non estrude praticamente più causa il Bowden che fa tac-tac e gira un poco avanti e un poco indietro senza più spingere il filo) questa stampante MatterHackers Pulse, una Creality cr-10 s5 3d, TronXY C5, una Tevo Little Monster o un’altra che preferisci in modo che non abbia storie di aggiustamento ( ho 75 anni e non conosco l’inglese. Hi Joe, still loving your work man. I was listening and the benchy @ 90mm made me wonder if the printer has the time to reach the speed? maybe the slicer just can get it faster? because of acceleration and jerk settings? that could be why the quality look similar to the 70 and not much worse as the 50mm version? i hope i explain my point clearly enough. Keep it up

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      Hi Martijn, very good point of observation :) In fact the average speed is around 50mm/s when you dissect the gcode online. the 90mm/s is the set speed parameter in teh slicer. the same way i had printed the model on the cr-10 mini at 200mm/s but the top speed was around 114 if i am not wrong. the printer rarely has enough time to reach top speeds unless it is a massive print

  • @hed420
    @hed420 6 років тому +4

    Ok, I'm impressed . I was wondering how does the print quality of the cr-10 compare ? I have a feeling it won't even come close . Even though I really like the cr-10's build volume, I think quality is more important to me . Do you happen to have a Zortrax m200 to compare print quality with ? I believe the m200 by far has the best print quality I've seen thus far but the $2k price tag and the really expensive filament scares me .

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому +5

      the zortrax have gone open source in terms of filament now, so you are not restricted to them. I can tell you that the quality of the pulse is one of the best i have seen, pretty much on par with teh MK2S. yes the build volume of the CR-10 is impressive, and the quality is great, really great, but not as good as this or the MK2S. plus, the CR-10 relies on the community for support and backup, with companies like Matterhackers, you have an actual company behind it which is reputable and known

    Would you buy the Prusa Mk3 over this one? I really like the mk3 but I have seen a lot about printing artifacts on it and that turns me off a little. That benchie you did was really impressive and makes me want this over the mk3. I'm thinking maybe this is like a prusa mk3 but without the artifacts.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      I will be talking about those artifacts that have been coming up lately. That is something that occurs in every printer, it’s just gaining traction now :) as for which to choose, depends what you need it for. I have 6 MK3 and the Pulse. The Pulse is my go to machine for anything Nylon related, especially abrasives and that’s where the strong point is for the Pulse

    • @sabahoudini
      @sabahoudini 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. I would probably print mostly PLA and PETG. I'm new to 3d printing and don't have a 3d printer yet. Really looking forward to that video, from what I've seen the wobbly feet of the prusa may be a part of the problem.

  • @RichLeeFL

    This definitely looks to be a Prusa killer. The Pulse XE version produces incredible results with Nylon/carbon-fiber infused filament. No ridiculous waiting period for shipments, a very reputable US-based company with [English speaking] lifetime telephone and chat support, 1-year parts and labor warranty and a rock-solid build with the highest quality (XE version) components. I just canceled my Prusa MK3 order (placed in March) and I’m ordering my Pulse XE today. They also come fully-assembled with free shipping and a 45-day “no questions asked” return period, also with free return shipping. What’s not to love?

    Well, it's pretty impressive indeed, but I don't know about the price (sure, the quality is impressive but still a salty price) taking into account the basic one doesn't even have a display (c'mon, how much can cost a smaller than standard, just for the basic needs?).
    But well, let's see if I can get (somehow) my Tornado (yes, you turned me you *** **** :P ) when it hopefully arrives somewhen... maybe a nozzle and a BLt for a start...

      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому +1

      hehe, i guess i'm sorry for that :) i agree on the screen, i would rather have it included in the price as stated in the video. as for the price in itself. i feel that for the quality of the machine, the quality of the prints, the fact that it's fully assembled and ready to print out of the box, plus the backing of a reputable company, i believe it's a fair price in my opinion. Good luck with the Tevo and shout out if you need nay help :)

    • @psychomarto
      @psychomarto 6 років тому

      Quoting you: I agree. As said , the quality is really awesome and the cons you had at the start are not an issue in my eyes, considering the fact that, if you join this hobby you HAVE to have a basic technical understanding and some courage to "get dirty" fixing stuff. My "complain" if it needs to be called somehow, was the too basic aspect of the basic model and the price, again, considering the fact that other brands like Tevo or Creality (ok, quoting potentialy a copy's copy :P) and their prices are substantially lower, including a fully usable standalone setup. And yes, I knowor think I know how they manage to push the prices ;). Sure, I prefer a reputable company like MH and/or one that they designed the device themselves, but I have not enough spare money to afford it.
      Aaaand yes, will keep it in mind, thank you for the kind offer! :D

    Nice review, sadly you didn't go into the fact that it uses an mk42 heat bed and missing an inductive probe ... Strange concept IMHO

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому +1

      it uses the upgraded Orbit. The advantages of the MK42 bed are that it is light and it has multi zone heating. it used to have the inductive probe and the Orbit was an upgrade, now it ships directly with the Orbit, so the benfit of the mk42 bed at this point is purely for better spread heating and weight (less inertia when changing direction)

    Bowden, can this print Ninjaflex, super flexible stuff, I doubt it would be able to.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      +kazolar on this particular one, yes it can due to its bond tech, however it’s a hefty price tag unless you are gonna print a lot of flex, might not be worth it. Having said that, it might print it at extremely low speeds

    • @kazolar
      @kazolar 6 років тому

      + 3D Maker Noob you've actually succeeded printing NinjaFlex, not regular TPU, but the real rubbery stuff, on a bowden system? -- I have a dual bondech bowden delta -- longer bowden tube, I've never tried to get it to print anything flexible -- just assuming it can't be done.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      +kazolar I managed to print fiberlogy fiberflex 40D on a Bowden, it’s very soft but print beautifully. On the Sigma I have bondtechs and I managed to print ninjaflex. As long as you slow it down a bit, you should manage

    • @kazolar
      @kazolar 6 років тому

      Sigma is a different animal, it uses 2.85mm filament, which is inherently easier to push through on a bowden system...hence why Ultimaker and Sigma can print flexibles with no issues, while something like the CR-10 can't. I have some other changes I plan to do to the delta which would allow me to print flexibles -- with a 1.2m bowden tube, it won't work -- pretty sure of that.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      +kazolar you should try investing in Capricorn PTFE tubing. It’s got very tight tolerances for filament so it will work better

    • @Borladim
      @Borladim 6 років тому +4

      Yeah but you seem to have had problems with it in the beginning although it was calibrated. Prusa for example delivers working profiles for S3D on their page. I mean the pulse surely is a nice printer, but, to me at least, it simply doesn´t deliver the bang for the buck that i get with a genuine Prusa. Especially if i look at all the bells and whistles that come with the Mk3.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому +7

      Prusa have almost perfected the Plug and play aspect of 3d printing so i can;t argue with that. in my case, this is goes toe to toe with the mk2s. quality wise they are both on point, Slic3r is definitely more efficient than mattercontrol at the moment so it makes the journey easier. The pulse on the other hand is quiet, which is one of the things i didn't like about the mk2s, it was very loud when in high power mode. personally for me, i think they both sit on the same level in terms of print quality, build quality, not to mention both a very reputable companies. anything aside from that is personal choice, but that is why competition exists, it drives innovation :)

    I can't get a real impression from a review where the printer has a ruby nozzle - realistically very few people would ever have one of those.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому

      the ruby nozzle doesn't do anything to the print quality unless you are someone who will use abrasive filaments like nylon and such. a person who is into RC and will print a lot of nylon filaments will need this as normal brass nozzle will wear off after about 300g of nylon filament.

    Sry but this Printer is like a 3 Years old Graphiccard... it's outdated and they want whey to mutch for that.
    It should cost about 400 not more even with the Bondtech.
    It is actually a Prusa Style printer so well let's compare it with the new Mk3 Kit that is out now.
    I get way more Sensors and at least the same amout of Support.
    Even the Olson Nozzle can be replaced with a hardened Steel Nozzle with Carbonfieber Filament at the e3D Shop.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 років тому +5

      I bought bondtech for my sigma, they cost over 200 alone. at 400 you'd buy an A8 with bondtech :) i can't compare it with the MK3 because it hasn't even shipped yet, plus a pre-assembled mk3 costs more $300 more than this, so i can compare it with a MK2s which is what this is based on. the olson ruby will last you many more times than a hardened steel nozzle which needs replacing after about 3 - 4 kilos of filament and costs about $23, meaning that if you buy 3 hardened steel nozzles you have spent as much as an olsson ruby nozzle. the difference is that the olsson ruby will still be good by you will need to replace the hardened steel nozzle again. Don't get me wrong, i understand your point of view. which is why there is so much competition on the market. competition is always healthy :)

    • @sazma
      @sazma 6 років тому

      The cost comparisons to the MK3 aren't really apples to apples though. Andre S. is very much on the mark when you consider the LCD upgrade, and all of the other "upgrades" for this machine that at the end of 2017 should be standard. Yes the cheaper MK3 comes as a kit, but that's not a bad thing. If you're going to maintain a printer, having built it from the ground up is a great exercise. If they're marketing this printer as maintenance free, they need to do a better job of emphasizing that because to my eyes, it looks like a well built 2 year old kit that will have the same issues any other kit will have, but without modern features. "Shipping today!" is great and all, but is it worth the price in the long term? I'm not so sure.

    • @andre267
      @andre267 6 років тому

      You're right at some Points, but in Mass Production cost a Bondtech Extruder nothing.
      Btw. i use my Harden Steel Nozzle about a Year and extruded aboet 10-12kg and the Diameter was meashured with a Laser System from a friendly Industrial Company for me and the Nozzle is close as good as my new Stock one. ;)

      @asderidelp 6 років тому +1

      but when you buy all the upgrades you need (Bondtech, LCD and Filament Run out) to get it to a mk3 level its 1234$ so its cheaper to buy an assembled i3 mk3

  • @Bajicoy
    @Bajicoy 6 років тому

    1500 dollars for this prusa mk2.5 or 800-900 dollars for a prusa mk3 this is a tough choice? What I can't get over is how absurdly overpriced some of the upgrades are, 100 dollars for a non-touch screen lcd and 250 dollars for a mediocre extruder..? Wtf

    • @PKTEK
      @PKTEK 5 років тому

      I believe the pulse is $650 now and the XE is still $1400. I'm hoping that now with the mk3 out that matter hackers may upgrade the pulse XE to compete but as it stands now, it still seems like a great printer. Plus, printing nylon out of the box will be amazing

      Yeah I heard it, but "Prusa Style" in an understatement. We are talking about matterhackers here, not some chinese company that doesn't even care about development or ripping off other peoples work ( I understand that we are talking about open hardware, but come on MatterHackers...you are better than this...or not?). Anyways... the machine can be good, but in my opinion is just a slightly modified Prusa...

    • @taylorlandry199

      It's absolutely a Prusa clone. No one is trying to hide or obscure that. The 2nd sentence on the product page is "built on top of the proven, open source Prusa i3 design..."
      Why is that a bad thing?

    Thanks for the overview. I must say I can't believe they are trying to sell this POS for $900... So lets break this down. Threaded rods and nuts for the chassis. (A couple dollars) LM8UU bearings zip tied, yes zip tied to the bed! WTF?!? ($10) 3D printed brackets, LCD cover, etc. ( A couple dollars) An LCD screen you can buy on Gearbest for $12 that they are charging $95 for! Nema 17 motors $30. Power supply $25. Control board $25. Heated bed $15. 8mm rods and lead screws maybe $40. The aluminum frame my local machine shop would cut with a water jet for about $60. We could probably build this with a one off frame for around $250. Remember this cost would be retail prices not the wholesale or bulk prices they are paying for the same parts. A typical markup is around 40-50%. Lets use 50% for simplicity. This means they pay around $100 for the parts. That means a markup of $800!!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I understand that companies need to make a profit but this is ridiculous. For the record I wouldn't buy an original Prusa for the same reason. You can purchase printers for less than half the cost that deliver the same results. Let's take this a bit further. I would pay $900 for this or the Prusa if they set themselves apart from the competition in print and build quality. So what would that entail? Linear rails not rods on all axis. A 32 bit board with good stepper drivers for improved accuracy. A full color touch display. An extruded frame for rigidity. A 120v insulated heated bed. An original E3D V6 hotend. Good stepper motors. (maybe .9 degree) Built in WiFi.... Rant over. :-)
    Cheers,
    Greg

      +Greg Allen haha it’s all good don’t worry, I totally get you. personally, I’d rather pay the $679 for this machine and have matterhackers behind it, then buy an Aneta and still end up paying over 300 worth of upgrades (which I actually did). It’s all a matter of taste, so I completely get you. Keep in mind though that not everyone has the time or the ability to build a printer from scratch, and some are willing to pay more for something that just works out of the box. Apologies if I made you rant :)

      Please contact us support@matterhackers.com, and let us know your sources for all of these things. If our BOM cost was close to $250, we'd definitely lower the price significantly. Meanwell power supplies, miniRambo electronics, genuine E3D hot ends, and Bondtech extruders make up a significant portion of the component cost, and you have severely underestimated their costs.
      I also find it odd to criticize the use of threaded rods and nuts when the Mk2 and Mk2 S - which was ranked as the winner in the Make shootout - uses the same setup. Oh, and, we use u-bolts for the bed, not zip ties ;)

    • @taylorlandry199
      @taylorlandry199 6 років тому +4

      I'm 100% with you on getting your money's worth. Every consumer wants that. I think we're talking about 2 different things here, though.
      If you value convenience and user experience, then $2500 gets you a very different printer than if you value innovation and component quality. I could build an insanely awesome printer from scratch for $2500. There's no way in hell it would come anywhere close to say, an Ultimaker, in terms of polish and out-of-box user experience for a beginner.
      The Pulse is not meant to be bleeding edge. We only use components that we use, like, and know are solid - the i3 platform, E3D hot ends, BondTech extruders, etc - and are offering a service to assemble and test a printer according to the customer's desire. When someone calls and asks for a printer that does X, Y, and Z, or that has a specific component, at a specific price point, we don't want to have to say "sorry, we don't have that". The Pulse gives us the opportunity to meet those requests. So, if someone likes the i3, but wants it bowden, or wants it in 3mm, or wants the Titan extruder, we can build them a printer, test it, and sell them a fully functional machine. Or, if someone wants a fully assembled, automatic calibrating printer for under $800, we have an option for them. There are also tons of people out there who have no desire or ability to assemble a kit. For them, it's worth it to pay for someone else's labor and time to figure it out for them. For you, who can build and calibrate great looking printers, it's clearly not worth it.
      In no way are we claiming it's the best printer on the market (pretty sure Joe isn't either). Reason being that there is no "best printer" for everyone. The best printer is the one that can do what the customer needs in the way that the customer needs it.

      Well if you personally can build a perfect printer yourself, with just $250 worth of components, then it's probably the best idea not to buy it off anyone but just do it. Nothing beats the sense of accomplishment from creating something with your own hands and with your own component selection or even better actual engineering decisions. Of course you get to eat your ambitions a few times along the way, so there's that.
