I rode across the USA in 2012, and left with 300 bucks in my pocket. I spent most my money on a Trek 520 and good touring gear. I made it. I'm saving now to ride do thru South America from here in the USA.

Tubeless can be good if you ride a lot of offroad, but otherwise I'd just buy a stiff tire like a schalwbe Pick up and run tubes.
