DENIS WICK TONE RING - CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE?

Thought I’d do a simple play test comparing the sound not using and then using a Denis Wick tone ring.
Can you hear a difference?
For my money the upper register is less bright and resonant but the lower register is perhaps a little fatter? Not sure! As with all these gadgets it’s fine tuning and down to personal preference. I think I prefer without, what do you think?

I heard that the dampening of the valve block could make the vibrations of the most important part, the bell, more free and singing but here the opposite seems to happen.
It could sound good to the player himself, it could make it easier to play/practice long/ high ... and then it's not wasted money.
Most likely here there were almost no "false vibrations" present. On some instruments it could take away some shrill ugly overtones, giving a more focused, classic sound.

Hi Adam, can't hear a big difference in sound. Think it sounds better without. Interested to know how different it feels with it on. I have a Pickett valve "thingy" but I'm not convinced either way.
Sounds great as usual anyway.

Thanks Richard, I dont think there’s a huge difference. My gut feeling is it is better without. Funnily enough I always used to use one when I played a Yamaha Bobby Shew model and I really found it anchored the sound.. but not so much on this. Perhaps a little fatter in the lower register but it loses some zing in the higher register. I do think it feels a little less focused when using the ring (which oddly is the opposite of the claim) but that may just be on this trumpet? Always good to experiment with stuff I think.. or is it just better to stick with what you’ve got and just practice? Lol hope you’re keeping well. All the best :)
