  • I have been visa-hopping since 2019, travelling on a dime and seeing the world. As an online English as a Second Language teacher, all I need to be able to work is my laptop, an internet connection, and a quiet environment.
    So how did I get here? Listen to the story to find out.

    Expressions and Pop Culture References
    Visa-hopping - moving between countries to get renewed visas stamped in your passport so as not to overstay.
    Travelling on a dime - a dime is 10 cents in the United States which is very little money. Travelling on a dime means travelling on a small budget.
    Land of the Long White Cloud - the nickname for New Zealand.
    Warmer shores - shores are where a large body of water meets land and hotter countries are said to have warm shores.
    The sunburnt country - a nickname for Australia due to the quantity of red dirt which looks like it has been burned by the sun.
    United States, US, USA, US of A, America - many of the way of referring to the United States of America.
    Emigrated versus immigrated - immigrated is used when you are in a new country and talking about moving there. Emigrated is used when talking about moving to another country but you are still in your original country. The difference is from the perspective of where you are when talking about the move.
    To quit a job - to quit is to leave your work voluntarily as opposed to being fired where you are forced to leave your job.
    Great White North - the nickname for Canada due to its size and abundance of snow.
    Socially distanced - a term used during the pandemic to remain six-feet or two metres apart in social situations.
    Top shelf - the best of something, usually referring to alcohol as the most expensive is often placed in the highest shelf in a bar.
    Pros and cons - advantages and disadvantages
    Broken Spanish - basic Spanish that is not spoken very well.
