My Chinese student’s mom told me to do this squat for my period cramps and it does help! It also lengthened my spine. I was so sedentary during 2020 that my body was extremely tight. This squat fixed my back and neck issues better than the physical therapist and chiropractor! Thanks!

Thanks so much for putting this on here. And I'm so pleased l found your tuition.
I am on day 24 of the 30/30 day squat challenge (30 days 30 minutes squatting) I have my feet flat on on the floor, but I need to hold on to something otherwise I imediately fall backwards. That hasn’t changed a single bit in 24 days. Only thing I notice is that I can sit more or less like demonstrated in the video, but not without holding on to something, a table in my case. I was expecting to feel some progress there, but unfortunately that is not the case. I am wondering if I should just be patient or I should change the practise
My family lived in Seoul for a few years when I was a kid… I’m in my 30s today back in America and I can’t count the number of times I’ve absentmindedly done an “Asian squat” while waiting in whatever line or standing around (I hate waiting in line and I hate standing still) when it’s necessary. It’s been happening more and more as I get older 😆 People look at me like I’m a crazy person or get worried I’m sick. Standing is for suckers. It’s all about the squat, bb!
LOL Like you, Lorelei, I use this squat often, at home when washing floors, gardening, sorting, etc, but time to time have used it in public and it seems that Canadians react much as you describe, thinking there's something 'wrong' with me. But, I'm 55 and have been diagnosed with arthritis and degenerative disc disease, so it helps relieve back pain and stretches my muscles. which I want and need. So, I ignore other's reactions and just do it : )
I plan on publishing two short videos on squatting next two weeks. It will be demos of my squat practice. The second video will show how to get out of a squat easily per request. Again no verbal instructions but hopefully it will give you an idea. Stay tuned!
I started doing this while watching TV. I take my time going up and down like I'm doing deep squats. I use the end of my coffee table to hold on to as I slowly squat down all the way. I will do this until my body loosens up some and won't need the table anymore. I'm also doing a 30 day, 100 (a day) squats challenge as well.
I'm 51. I can get down there but my heels come up off the ground. I did what you suggested and placed a blanket under my heels to fill the gap. Viola! What a great trick. I can't stay down more than a minute or two though. I really feel the strain in a muscle that runs up from the outer ankle bone up the anterior and outer side of my lower leg. I'm going to practice this every day. I have two new goals! Heels on the ground and a full 5 minutes!
I had stopped using this position in public and around non-Asians. My coworkers and some friends always made fun of me. It is actually a relaxing position for me when I’m tired of standing, have nowhere to sit, or when I’m doing something low to the ground. Surprisingly, I did not know it was hard for people to perform until watching this video and reading the comments! I am glad it turns out this position has some health benefits. I hope everyone trying it succeeds and finds it naturally comfortable.
once i did it when i got tired in pe class and this girl laughed at me and said i looked like a penguin :/ and another time i did it with my british friends and they told me to “sit down normally” 🥲 so ik what you must’ve felt like..
I started incorporating 30 seconds squat everyday and can feel a lot better in my thighs, legs, and bums. It has also helped with the digestive system. Thank you for sharing.🙏
This is great! I spend all day long in my greenhouse and outside organic garden and I am squatting and up and down all day. I tried this and it was like instant relief. And so far, I am not noticing myself getting dizzy when I get back up, like I did when I had been squatting down for a long period of time. Thank you!
For cat owners who use a traditional cat box for their kitties - cleaning the litter boxes is a purrfect way to utilize the Asian Squat! I've been doing it for awhile without realizing I was actually helping myself out in the process.
I noticed this when I first moved to Thailand. I began training by doing it for a few seconds at first and worked my way up to being able to sustain for long periods of time. Thank you for sharing about synovial fluid. I hadn't known the science behind it. It is so useful for utilizing the ground as a flat surface for work. I find it also helps strengthen core muscles. And of course, it allows access to squatting toilets. I have heard going to the bathroom this way is more natural for our bodies. Thanks for sharing this video.
I have always been envious of those that can do the Asian squat. I love gardening and it would be so much healthier for me as opposed to walking around bent over all the time. I will work on it now that I know it is possible for my body to learn to do this thank you so much
I'm not Asian and I didn't know this was a real thing. I've used this position for years!!! People have asked me why I squat and even how I can get back up lol Maybe in my past life I was Asian... lol I can't get over this. It just came up in my feed outta nowhere!
Right! It's not just an Asian thing. Women/people in Afrika. South American and Caribbean forest people have been squatting like this for many 1000s of years.
Thank you so much for this video. I am 73 and have given myself a goal to do the Asian squat and sit in lotus position for one hour in 12 months. I have been at it now for 60 days. Progress has been slow and uncomfortable, but I am beginning to see some real progress. I limit my time sitting in chairs and sit on the floor with a pillow or with my knees under me as much as possible. Thank you again for your videos.
I've done this my entire life, will be 28 in October. I can't believe this is an actual thing. By the way I'm American. Alot of people really thought I was crazy and going to hurt myself. It was just very natural to me.
I have knee problems. I tried the exercise with a low stool. I can feel my lower back muscles stretching. My calf muscles are extremely weak too. I will persevere with this and lower the height of my bottom as I get stronger.
I have seen this called the Slavic squat as well. However, in the Caribbean we do this as well. It’s a natural human position, very common in rural areas.
I’m thinking that a natural way to incorporate the squat into my day would be to try to use it when I am getting things out of the lower kitchen cupboards or putting them away instead of bending over awkwardly.
Awesome! I love you have incorporated it instead of doing it as repetitive exercises. The more its incorporated, the more impact with long lasting changes it will have!! Happy Squatting!
Stumbled upon this video and just found out I'm normal!🙏🏻 People think I have physical and mental problems because I can perfectly and comfortably squat for hours since I was a small kid🤷🏼♀️ I didn't know what I do had a name: “asian squat”. You've brightened up my day: I'm normal!
I so desperately want to train my body to do this. I feel that I have ruined my muscles and joints sitting in a chair for work and relaxation for endless hours. I have stiff hips and thighs not to mention pain in my knees on occasion. I hope it is not too late for me. I am 56 yrs. old and want to better as I age. My 18 year old son can Asian Squat effortlessly and he encourages me as well. Thank you for this video. I subscribed to your channel and hope that one day I will meet my goal.
Yes absolutely you can improve. Never too old or to late to improve! You will just have to pace yourself. A key to improvement is consistency and a little step at a time. Please dont toture yourself to do this. You can allow your body to adjust and adapt gradually.
You & me both! I didn’t realize until I retired at 60 that I had lost so much flexibility from sitting at a desk. I’ve been working on squatting & flexibility the past few years & can tell a big difference. I can do a full squat like him but only for a second because it hurts. But let’s keep working on it!
I'm almost 55yrs old and was the same. Not anymore!! Lower the carbohydrates and that will improve the pain. Then get a great physiotherapist to get you a stretching and weight routine. It works!!!
I'm 74 and I use this at least once a day cleaning the traditional litter boxes I have for my kitties. Didn't realize that having to squat to clean kitty boxes was actually healthy for me.
Taro, last week I couldn't even walk 20' without my body going into a cramp! After your neck excersize; the very next day I could walk through the store w/out having to use the power cart. It's a real time miracle! Thank you
The first day I practiced this squat, I did a total of 30 minutes over a couple of hours. My digestion GREATLY improved that very day. I have not had problems since (and I practice squatting once every two days, because I forget…)
Loved how you showed how possible it is to stay in the squat for nearly 10min... I felt since getting my low back and hips open that it was more of a mind game to stay centered, so good for everything really, thank you!
Thank you. I'm 71 and fairly active with yard work and have lost all my mobility to squat for over 40 years which I think adds to my back pain.....It will be a challenge but I think you have convinced me to get more limber with the squat exercise/life style. It will be an interesting journey.
I 73 and commented above about the same thing. I walk for miles every day but have trouble getting out of Adirondack chairs which have a very low sitting position. Totally unable to squat. I have some back issues, that perhaps are impacting on my ability to do this too. I would like to be able to get down to see into low cupboards or tie my shoes again. Guess I will try these exercises and see if I can maybe regain this skill.
Thankyou so much for educating and sharing! I have been working thru a bunch of pelvic tension which creates other issues like runners knee. Very complex to heal from a medical perspective. But as soon as I started trying to spend more time on the ground or squatting, the more I recover! And im astonished that even with knee issues I can get I the position for a short time (carefully!). I can FEEL instantly my pelvis relax and thank me for it. God bless!
Yes I can get down and up but I’m wondering about the alignment. I don’t know why I can’t hold my upper body the same as you without falling backwards. Maybe it’s my ankles? 🤷🏻♀️
@@cararose1977 It's just a matter of practice. If you wear glasses, take them off so your head goes into a more natural position...try in front of a mirror
When I was in Malaysia, I noticed many people squatting like this while waiting for the bus, leisurely smoking on their doorstep or outside a shop (even outside a fast food place I won't mention)... Here in the UK, I once saw a Chinese student squatting like this on the pavement, while waiting for a taxi. I took a picture of him (with his permission). He was amused :)
squat is used in many functional activities by many people. was used by a lot more people when we didn't have chairs, couches. For better and worse we adapt to changes in environment, lifestyle.
My dad lived in Pennsylvania all his life, born in 1920. He was 6’ tall and very skinny, but powerful. I recall him squatting when at our camp house in the woods, around the fire with his brothers, just relaxing. It’s one of my beautiful memories of him. They had wonderful woven carry baskets about the size of suitcases, and when laid flat, there was a hinged back that raised, with leather straps to keep it from going too far. They had flat mats inside for some comfort, a chair without legs. I’ve always disliked regular chairs and couches, sitting on anything that I can just rest the sit (sp?) bones, but not the hamstrings. My favorite is a low carpeted turret for a cat, eating at a low table. I’ve wondered if squatting strains the knees. We’re warned not to let the knee joint go out further than the toes when exercising (squats and lunges). Thanks. Glad I’ve found your channel today. 🙏
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your memories! Squat is sometimes viewed negatively. But it is a fairly normal fundamental movement that has been used by people of all ages. The idea about knees shouldnt go past toes during squat or lunge is very strange, and is often applied without any functional contexts.
I can do it easely. On my travels to Asia I learn to do it when I visit people. Now I feel more stifness, but I go again to do it more now I find your video. Thans for refressing my memorie. !
I'm in Malaysia and have a squat toilet. I still struggled to get my heels down but I do feel the benefits in digestion, elimination, and when relaxing on a low stool to do tasks in my garden. I tried using wedges under my heels but it didn't feel right. Now I'm going to use books under my butt and use it more often while watching YT videos. I feel my spine popping and lengthening when I squat and it has helped heal a sciatic nerve problem I had.👍😁Great Videos
Oh my that's exactly what I want to learn lol hope I can do it I try but my balance is not so Good !! Working on it. New sub here , I'm 73 years young but still very active! Run and walk! Ride bike , do weights ect lol
Thanks for subscribing! Have you checked my most recent video? ua-cam.com/video/WVNoW0esKnA/v-deo.html You might find this video helpful to improve your squat. Happy Squatting!
Thank you so much. However as a person who is about to turn 68, I wish I had started this many years ago. However, I have just joined in new gym in my area, as my last chance to get myself fit as I get in to older age. Reformer Pilates and a trainer for weights to increase my core strength. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
We can do our next generation a favor by installing Asian style toilets. Get them trained to use this toilet from the very beginning. This is all they need. Plus it is very sanitary. I am Asian and it comes to us so naturally because this is how we grew up. Unfortunately, it is becoming rare in our countries also as people look down on this position and relate it to something that only poor people do. I am glad that western countries are starting to promote deep squat.
I've never used those toilets and i can do the Asian squat. I wish we had those toilets here in America though. No one actually sits on public seated toilets. I always hover and i hate how close the toilet is to my legs. It's so stupid.
@Ina Bu I grew up in Albania as well and I can definitely relate to your comment, when we go there to visit, they have changed most of the toilets to the more "comfortable" ones (unsanitary to me) I'm disappointed to say the least😒
I couldnt isolate my back pain. It was either L5SI, sciatica, or SI pain caused by doing some romanian deadlifts with bad form. This squat along with spreading my knees apart with my elbows has GREATLY relieved that pain and posibbly ‘popped’ something back where it belings.
My man did THE ENTIRE VIDEO in the Asian squash. 👌 I've always been fascinated by this squat, yet didn't realize how awesome it was for your health. Maybe goals for the end of the year?
I immigrated to Canada from Asia almost forty years ago so I wondered if I have lost the ability to do this squat. I haven’t!!! ! I will keep practicing this now that you have pointed out its benefits.
A stack of books can be used instead of a stool. That way, a person can easily adjust the height as time goes on. I'm looking forward to incorporating some squatting into my daily activity. I'm curious to see how long it will take me to get my feet flat and to no longer need to use books in this way.
I just did your video of thoracic flexibility with the exercise ball, then tried squatting again. I had a huge improvement! I could get into a full squat easily, with my feet flat and not holding onto anything. I had to come out of it after a second or two, because of discomfort in my hip joints, but I'm looking forward to gaining more stamina in this position. I'm surprised how much of the issue was my thoracic spine, not my ankles or hips. I'm delighted by how quickly my squat improved. Thank you so much for making these videos!
@@shaynaformity1384 Thanks for sharing that! Squatting is a lot more than flexibility of ankles, knees, and hips. involves mobility and coordination of the entire spine with hips, knees, and ankles.
I am 63 years old and have no trouble at all getting into this position, holding the position, or getting out of this position. I've never had any problem with the flexibility of my hips, legs, feet or ankles. i realize being an American I am probably an exception to the rule.
I have been practicing and trying to do things exactly as you describe. Your advice has been excellent! Though I can't wait to do the exercises I make myself watch all the video FIRST before trying. Thank you, Taro!!!
I had no idea that there was a name for this, but I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember to help relieve back & leg pain. The Asian squat has just always felt like a very natural, instinctive movement to me for some reason. Thank you for educating me on the benefits of doing the Asian squat! ✌🏼💜🛼
I never knew this was a thing until a friend's elderly mother came over for a visit from Korea. I would see her in the garden weeding while squatting. Something just clicked and ever since then I have found the squat to be a comfortable position for a variety of activities. I'm glad to discover it is actually good for me.
i was a Vocational teacher in a College in Fla. had a student from Vietnam, i gave out some books for engines, and said to him try to read about the engine to help you understand(he was very intellegent), i left class for a few minutes , when i returned he was squatting up on the work bench, i asked why he did that! his response was he can read and understand things much better doing the squat! . I said OK if it works for you!
Great encouragement, and practical advice! One of the best predictors of longevity is the ability to get up off the floor.... srsly. Inhabit the floor!!!
Thank you Taro (sorry, do not recall the spelling of your last name) for this much-needed video. I appreciate your explanation of the benefits and demonstration of how to do the Asian squat.
I just remembered that when I was a kid, there was some news articles about Asian workkers squating while waiting for a bus. (I think it was when people wrom Thailand started to come to Finland for berry picking) Finnish people were amazed that adults were/could be in that position for "no reason" (it was seen ok when you were working ex. Gardening etc.) These days national news paper encourages people to do these squats for health reasons :)
My current challenge is to go from sitting cross legged on the floor into a squat. First time I saw this done was in China. Also I'm learning how to sit with knees out front and bum on the floor between my ankles. In one generation the West could be a people of squatters. We unlearn this innate childhood ability.
Cultural influence on our ability to move is quite powerful, isnt it? By the way, have you practiced spiral to stand and spiral to sit? This transition movement is similar to crossed leg to squat if I am thinking what you described correctly.
@@TaroIwamoto I think Europeans were too influenced by kings and queens sitting on thrones. I've seen the spiral to stand, it's popular with Systema Russian martial arts.
My physiotherapist recommended putting my feet on a stool while on the toilet to relieve strain on my hip if I'm sitting there a long time because of digestive issues. I was amazed how much it does help digestive tract movement! I will definitely try this squat periodically throughout the day
I'm 65 years old, retired, and living in Japan. My achilles, knees, hips, and back are trashed from a lifetime of running and skiing. But I still do those things and I can easily use the Asian squat any time I want. I do have to be a little careful about my left knee, but I have complete range of motion. I can't do it long enough to eat a meal, but I can hang out in it for 10-15 minutes no problem. I can sit seiza too, but that gets painful in my left knee sooner and sometimes I get cramps in my feet. My biggest problem is my hips and lower back. If I try to sit cross legged in a Japanese restaurant to eat, my IT bands pull on my knees and it gets very painful very quickly. Trying to sit in the Lotus position is comical. I can't even get close to getting one leg crossed over the other and I tip over backwards when I try. I've had this issue my entire life so I want to say I'm not anatomically capable. But maybe I just haven't found the right techniques and mobilizations to achieve it. Excellent video, thank you!
Nice that you live in Japan. We are hoping to visit our family in Japan next year! I will post a few videos on posterior pelvic tilt later this month and early next month, which might be helpful for you. Please be sure to click the bell to get notification when my new videos are posted so you wont miss them.
Thanks for this. I am strength training, learning barbell and kettlebell squats, and am following some very strong people who promote various versions of what your are showing here
I have always been fascinated by Asians doing the "Asian Squat" and in fact envious of what appeared to be their natural ability to hold a position so foreign to Westerners and yet so healthy for all!
Thanks for the comment! I believe the ability to do so called "Asian Squat" has more to do with their lifestyle than genetic makeups or structural factors. In fact, many Westerners who are raised in Japan have this ability.
People in many parts of the world don't use western style chairs and furniture at all, so they start in childhood being able to do it and merely keep doing it until they die.
I'm half Japanese, raised in n America, and had never squatted until my thirties when I moved to Japan. It was very easy from the first time I tried. Maybe has something to do with a longer trunk and shorter legs?
I have really tight hip flexors, yet I fin the Asian squat incredibly easy. Weird. If I have lower back pain, I drop into an Asian squat and the pain goes away. It's part of my morning stretching routine. BTW, I'll be 75 next month, so if you're in your 20's, 30's or 40's, start doing this now. Toddlers squat like all the time.
Good digestion requires a diet similar to Asian original diet in which more plant food is consumed vs. meat or fish. I am vegan so I am used to this and have changed what I do in the bathroom, to make the squatting technique part of my preparation before my daily regularity and then using a foot stool to raise my feet. I makes a complete elimination, much more comfortable and takes less time. I think it helps the muscles to remain strong and that one can.mentally invoke them to help with the BM. As one ages, the ability to train your body to be aware of what you are doing and that your muscles are strong enough to get up and down are beneficial to older people like me. I am 69 and your video has helped me a lot and motivated me to do these techniques several times a day and it is getting better. Occasionally I can get up but it seems my muscles need to gain strength but can stand up sometimes. I want to get where I can stand up with control also.
Sit down on an exercise ball. Then gradually lean back and roll into position. Also could roll back and forth to increase the stretch. Didn't know all that stuff. It's a really nice exercise to do daily.
One key to this squatting position is the deceasing of the angle of the dorsiflexed foot to the shin, which is a benefit conferred by the yoga down dog Asana, where the heels are to reach the floor. These two positions help each other.
Thank you for addressing the fact that it can be one's feet or ankles, so often I have had yoga instructors and the like look at me with a blank stare when I mention it's my feet, not my hips.
Yeah but you'd have to warm up your muscles before to prevent pulls and stretched muscle Cause if not habitual to the pose it's a little hard and straining in the beginning
My brother in law who was a DOM and yoga master always encouraged my children and his to practice the Asian squats and to this day they find this a natural position. How I wish I had paid more attention. I incorporate my yoga stool for this. THANK you for this break down of adjustments!
Do this w reading etc? Yes, some. I have found doing the squat and focus on my breathing is fun. Has to be fun, if it is seen as work I will end up quitting. It is healing my entire body, slowly but surely
I sleep on the floor for 25 years and squat to make my bed up every day. And over 60 keep fit I don’t have a lounge chair and eat by squatting on the floor. Velvet bath mats are my furniture which I can move easily
I've got a sit to stand desk I have my eye on to hopefully buy this year, it actually comes down low enough I can squat at it as well! My back/hips will thank me
I have been sitting like this since I was a kid. I don’t know why. I am not Asian . Remember waiting for subway and squatting . Now in my 60’s and squatting as I type this. I didn’t even know how much good I’ll was doing. How Cool!
I’ve always wanted to do this my only question is we were always taught not to let our knees lead over our ankles because of stress on knees. But it doesn’t seem to matter in this position. I mean you see so many mobile 80 and 90 year olds who do this with no issues
knees shoudnt go past toes is not realistic as many functional activities require knees to go past toes. Honestly i dont know where that idea came from but i know that is still a fairly common instruction.
Keep practicing with patience. You will be able to stay longer and longer if you incorporate this to a daily or every other day activity. I had been mostly bedridden for several years due to severe ME/CFS, hypermobile EDS, POTS and cervical instability etc. My Biodynamic Chraniosacral therapist showed me how to do slow deep squats and told me to practise those because of the overall benefits (this movement in the knees also activated circulation in the body). I’ve done these practises for a few years now and I am so much more stable and strong in my whole body + I can squat throughout this video without a problem at age 38. If one experiences POTS symptoms make sure to drink 1.5-3 litres of water with 1-2 teaspoons daily. If you experience that the saltwater tastes bad or gives you nausea or heartburn you need to get your potassium and magnesium in balance, coconut water is good for that balance (these are advice from medical doctors who are POTS specialised and has helped me immensely).
My Chinese student’s mom told me to do this squat for my period cramps and it does help! It also lengthened my spine. I was so sedentary during 2020 that my body was extremely tight. This squat fixed my back and neck issues better than the physical therapist and chiropractor! Thanks!

Many midwives teach this squat. It aligns the birth canal and helps w/ lower back pain.
I have always been envious of those that can do the Asian squat. I love gardening and it would be so much healthier for me as opposed to walking around bent over all the time. I will work on it now that I know it is possible for my body to learn to do this thank you so much
Me too! I've never been able to squat deeply.
My hips and ankles are so tight
I'm not Asian and I didn't know this was a real thing. I've used this position for years!!! People have asked me why I squat and even how I can get back up lol
Maybe in my past life I was Asian... lol
I can't get over this. It just came up in my feed outta nowhere!
haha, thats funny!
It’s a natural, human resting position.
That is a human squat, that why? No one taught it out of you. ThT why?
Yeah, lol! I do this when I shop looking at the bottom shelves...I never knew!
I just commented the same thing!!!
I have knee problems. I tried the exercise with a low stool. I can feel my lower back muscles stretching. My calf muscles are extremely weak too. I will persevere with this and lower the height of my bottom as I get stronger.
My knees used to hurt so much when i first do it in my 50s. After doing it more, the pain is gone.
That is wonderful and encouraging!
I have seen this called the Slavic squat as well. However, in the Caribbean we do this as well. It’s a natural human position, very common in rural areas.
I’m thinking that a natural way to incorporate the squat into my day would be to try to use it when I am getting things out of the lower kitchen cupboards or putting them away instead of bending over awkwardly.
thats a nice way to incorporate squat into daily activities!
I've been doing this when I pick something up off the floor and feed my cat.
@@Wednesdaywoe1975 very functional use of squatting!
I use it for extended periods when weeding.
I use it for cleaning litter boxes, in addition to the above. Basically, I try to squat whenever I need to get low.
I've started incorporating this and it has helped my squat ROM tremendously
Awesome! I love you have incorporated it instead of doing it as repetitive exercises. The more its incorporated, the more impact with long lasting changes it will have!! Happy Squatting!
Taro, I think this is one of your most beneficial for any age.
Keep up you good work. Thanks
Thank you!!
Thank you
wow! That is pretty amazing!!
wow! that is pretty amazing!!
Good luck with your journey! small step at a time and consistent practice will pay off!
Taro, thank you for this important instruction, and for your eloquent and soothing delivery.
Tjank you! let me know if you have any questions.
God bless!
Thank you for making this information available. Please increase the volume of the sound. So glad to find you!
Thank you! Sorry about the low volume. The audio for later videos were adjusted so should be better.
It would improve the video if you showed moving into and out of a Squat a few times and describing what good position of back, feet, knees are
Great suggestion! Thank you. Love the feedback from my viewers. They help me make better videos in the future!
@The Great Pumpkin very often. when i am using a computer, watching TV, reading a book, etc. more so than sitting in a regular chair.
I've gotten used to doing the Asian squat while gardening, cleaning floors...so never in moments of leisure - thanks for the challenge!
Thank you. I was stationed in Japan and always wanted to learn to sit this way. The tips were so helpful. I really appreciate it.
you are very welcome!
Thank you so much. However as a person who is about to turn 68, I wish I had started this many years ago. However, I have just joined in new gym in my area, as my last chance to get myself fit as I get in to older age. Reformer Pilates and a trainer for weights to increase my core strength.
Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
never too late or old to learn and improve. It is only our mindset that limits our growth. Good luck!
Thanks for this demonstration.
I am glad that western countries are starting to promote deep squat.
yes agreed!! we all need to practice this more daily
I've never used those toilets and i can do the Asian squat. I wish we had those toilets here in America though. No one actually sits on public seated toilets. I always hover and i hate how close the toilet is to my legs. It's so stupid.
@@terenarosa4790 nice. sounds like you get good quad workout every time you use public toilet. At least you are getting some benefits :)
@Ina Bu thats great. use it or lose it!
Free adjustment for ya!
I stand all day at work with no place to sit. This is my resting position. Thank you . Great to know its good for me
yes this is a natural resting position. i also use it as a resting position
My man did THE ENTIRE VIDEO in the Asian squash. 👌
I've always been fascinated by this squat, yet didn't realize how awesome it was for your health. Maybe goals for the end of the year?
Thanx for sharing
Very helpful
Right now I'm watching this video in squat. I use it a lot. Even for eating. I'm going on 70.
Great idea!
Squatting is a lot more than flexibility of ankles, knees, and hips. involves mobility and coordination of the entire spine
with hips, knees, and ankles.
i would prefer to use wooden planks of different thickness as you are not supposed to sit on a knowledge book
This is a great idea! Thank you!
Good info
glad you find it helpful !
I am 63 years old and have no trouble at all getting into this position, holding the position, or getting out of this position. I've never had any problem with the flexibility of my hips, legs, feet or ankles. i realize being an American I am probably an exception to the rule.
Great! Keep moving and stay healthy and mobile!
Love it…I incorporate this into my yoga class every time.
Ty! Very helpful. As ok best to you ✌️❤️
Thank you!
I have been practicing and trying to do things exactly as you describe. Your advice has been excellent! Though I can't wait to do the exercises I make myself watch all the video FIRST before trying. Thank you, Taro!!!
Good suggestions on when to use this squat (watching TV or reading). That will help me practice it more often. Thank you!
You are welcome. The more you can incorporate it into your daily activities, the more practice you can get, the easier it will be. Happy squatting!
I'm glad to discover it is actually good for me.
i never knew there is asian squatting either, but i guess i do it all the time when in garden, weeding :) and i dont come from Asia lol
i was a Vocational teacher in a College in Fla.
had a student from Vietnam, i gave out some books for engines, and said to him try to read about the engine to help you understand(he was very intellegent), i left class for a few minutes , when i returned he was squatting up on the work bench, i asked why he did that!
his response was he can read and understand things much better doing the squat!
. I said OK if it works for you!
haha, nice story! i squat and do japanese seiza sitting a lot when i work on computer.
Great encouragement, and practical advice!
One of the best predictors of longevity is the ability to get up off the floor.... srsly.
Inhabit the floor!!!
yes!
Great information! I like how you explained this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Plan to give it a try, thank you so much.
Thank you Taro (sorry, do not recall the spelling of your last name) for this much-needed video. I appreciate your explanation of the benefits and demonstration of how to do the Asian squat.
You are very welcome! Enjoy moving!
Thank you for your time, you have been very helpful and I appreciate the way you explain everything. Take care and keep well.
Gardening etc.)
These days national news paper encourages people to do these squats for health reasons :)
Squat is a position that doesnt require much work, so its used by many as a resting position.
I felt pain in my legs and butt by just watching you sitting and talking you for long time. Anyway going to try this.. Excellent presentation
I am strength training, learning barbell and kettlebell squats, and am following some very strong people who promote various versions of what your are showing here
You are welcome! I am a big movement geek as movement directly impacts our lives. If we can improve our movement, we can improve our lives!
@@russellstutler8234 that's definitely a factor.
Excellent advice. I will try to practice this.
Let me know how your practice goes. Enjoy!
Wow thank you so much Kino I am grateful to have been introduced to your teaching ❤️🙏🌺🧘🏻♀️
Amazing tips !! Thank you very much Sir very helpful 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
My pleasure. Glad you found it helpful!
A good idea. I like it!
This is very helpful
Thank you!
Patricia
my pleasure!
I use this while filing in the lowest filing cabinet drawer at work. I’m 67and find it very comfortable
good for you!
One of my comfort positions for sure, grew up with this squat as a child.
One key to this squatting position is the deceasing of the angle of the dorsiflexed foot to the shin, which is a benefit conferred by the yoga down dog Asana, where the heels are to reach the floor. These two positions help each other.
yes absolutely! Thank you for mentioning that!
Excelent! Really helpful advice!🙏
Thank you 🙏 I like to squat and really like your approach.
Thank you!
Thank you for making this video!
my pleasure!
I love hanging out in this position for a while to rest and stretch my lower back ☺️
me too!
Thank you for addressing the fact that it can be one's feet or ankles, so often I have had yoga instructors and the like look at me with a blank stare when I mention it's my feet, not my hips.
Thank you for sharing this.. actually this is the most comfortable set..
Great advice✔️
I hope I'm not too old (as a 55 year old Western male) to start learning to do this!
absolutely not too old to start learning to do this!
Yeah but you'd have to warm up your muscles before to prevent pulls and stretched muscle
Cause if not habitual to the pose it's a little hard and straining in the beginning
It is healing my entire body, slowly but surely
i completely agree! Has to be fun and practical and functional! Focusing on breathing while doing this is an excellent idea!
Appreciate your help.
thank you!
I sleep on the floor for 25 years and squat to make my bed up every day.
And over 60 keep fit
I don’t have a lounge chair and eat by squatting on the floor.
Velvet bath mats are my furniture which I can move easily
wonderful! Move it or Lose it! Let's keep moving and stay healthy!
I've got a sit to stand desk I have my eye on to hopefully buy this year, it actually comes down low enough I can squat at it as well! My back/hips will thank me
My grandfather squat for long periods of time up til he was in his 80’s.
thats great !
Became familiar with this in yoga practice. Very natural 🌿
good for you!
I have been sitting like this since I was a kid. I don’t know why. I am not Asian . Remember waiting for subway and squatting . Now in my 60’s and squatting as I type this. I didn’t even know how much good I’ll was doing. How Cool!
Good for you! Keep squatting and moving! Happy squatting!
Thank you will try
Good luck. Start small and slow!
Interesting, started sitting like this recently not knowing why. But now it seems like it's beneficial for several reasons. Greetings from Sweden 🥰
Can we please talk about how he stays in the squat position almost the entire video? Crazy i cant even stay 1 min in that position 🤣😅
I can't either 5 seconds!
