I love you girl but I have to disagree. My family and I are on our fifth home (I'm 58) and I just don't see these trends or colors as realistic for the average person. Grey was everywhere for 8 years and now it's not. Beige is now the new grey. Blonde wood was the rage and now it's medium dark. Black granite was it until it wasn't. The best kitchen reno is what goes with the rest of your house and if you have a lot of white trim and white molding....a white kitchen with a pop of subtle color will always be the way to go. Most people reno their kitchens every 20 years or so and even then it's often not a full reno. I just find some of these suggestions to be totally out of touch.
I agree. A white kitchen is classy and will always be in style. Imo. If we were to follow these designers ideas all the time we would be changing our decor and colors every year which would be very costly. So for me I go with what I like.
I 100% agree. I am also 58 and can remember being 6 years old and loving my cousin's kitchen that was on a farm and all white. Ever since I have owned any house, painting the kitchen cabinets white is first on my list. I never like a dark kitchen (grew up with it in the 70s!). In my humble opinion and I am not a designer, white kitchens with colorful accessories or walls if you like color are the way to go. Easy to change and not that expensive. But...to each his own.
I love, love, love my white kitchen cabinets, and my countertops. I have always wanted a black and white kitchen. I have lived here five years, and I love it more every day.
really enjoyed the video because it showed the average person how they could update what they already had without redoing the entire space. Most of us just don't have the funds to do a kitchen redo more than once in our adult lives. Keep these types of videos coming. So Helpful

I bought a house in 2022 with a slate floor, hickory cabinets, green granite counters (love them!). No desire to make it white. And I sold a house with oak cabinets (old but good condition), maple floors and green granite counters and got top dollar
I like white in the kitchen except for the floor. I do not think a white kitchen will ever go out of style. It’s just so practical and keeps the room light. But I do like all the kitchens pictured including the black ones. I think black just brings elegance and drama in any room it’s used in. Also love navy blue. practical advice. I truly admire the vastness of your design knowledge and how you take the time to share - for every trend we’re seeing - the “how we got here.” It makes so much sense that the white kitchen spawned from real estate investors and probably TV flippers. My reality is that I’m currently building my next home while renovating a vacation rental and the white kitchen still feels like a safe place to fall for the rental. The hideaway kitchen doesn’t appeal to me but I appreciate that it can be a great solution for some folks. If I hide the kitchen while we’re eating, how will I know I’ve forgotten to serve the bread, or the side dish or turn the oven off? 😮
I have a cream kitchen with marble countertops and mix brownish tiles throughout on walls. The floor has square wooden like tiles. We have an outside kitchen for heavy use , it stores large of chest freezers , bulk storage , this kitchen is used for large family gatherings ( cooking) . I grill and cook fish in there ( like today). It is a dark green with same floors and tiles as outside but different pattern . I love that the designers have started to use curves in the kitchen ( no protruding sharp corners for kids running around) I see a lot of that these days. Thank you!
I’m thrilled that the first person I saw in the morning is you, Lisa. Generally, kitchen is the most expensive room and decidedly difficult to get it right. Thank you for another yummy-licious video.

Hi Lisa, I am glad you took note of the flat cabinets without hardware. I loved that look as soon as I saw it a couple years ago when researching my tiny contemporary house and was thinking about having a relaxing space that isn't distracting. I never considered doing all white and did consider two tones of green below and white above, but in the end decided on focusing on the space's envelope and having things flow from one end of the room to the other keeping chukum warm off white tones for the walls and counter tops and light wood for the cabinet drawers, minimizing contrast so the kitchen won't be distracting when looking that way from the living or dining parts of the room. I'd rather have the garden views grab my attention. Styles come and go so it is great to just find something you love and can live with for however long you'll be living in your home.
Bought a home in 1995 with white painted cabinets. They were chipping and staining within 3 years by 5 they looked like heck. I finally got new cabinets in February 2024. I don’t think painted cabinets are durable enough to survive a kitchen that is used regularly. Maybe if you don’t cook much painted cabinets are fine. I also would not have wood flooring in a kitchen with wood cabinets as it’s really difficult to coordinate.
@@marywiggins7411 That’s so true! My lowers are painted in a contrast color, same brand paint, and I’ve had no problems there either. I was just responding to white holding up or not. Tks!
We went with off white uppers, blue lowers, and light stained red oak floors. Its also larger and more functional. A future buyer (in about 20 years) can change the colors but the larger space and functionality will remain for them to work with.
Who the heck is cleaning the fluted wood cabinets. Looks great but completely impractical. Sometimes a design trend should just be ignored, this is one of those.
I’ve always liked a kitchen with a separate formal dining room. We usually have daily evening meals in the dining room. Dining room w doors is very handy for formal dinners as I can set an elaborate table in advance and close it off to pets and kids. And I love being able to close off the kitchen mess from diners. Having people milling around while I prepare a meal, especially a big dinner, would be a nightmare. The magical guest-milling-about-with-dinner-prep appears to me to require very simple, mostly prepped food which isn’t my jam.
I absolutely cannot stand the European trend of hidden kitchen. Something I would never consider. I never went for the all white kitchen either. Such an unimaginative and boring space. Just as bad as all grey or all black kitchens. I think the idea of wall paper or a patterned ceiling and color on the lower cabinets is a great idea.
Mu first thought about the hidden kitchens is splatter and dust. Those doors & hinges need to be cleaned, and take up space. Also, it looks depressingly bland with the doors shut. I agree. No thanks. I enjoy visiting with friends and family in the kitchen while cooking. We cook together. I have a lovely Morris wallpaper on the upper portion of walls (strawberry thief in slate) a chair rail with maison blanc (Sherwin Williams) below, plus the original honey oak cabinets. Love my kitchen. I also like the looks of a soft white kitchen when done well, but it’s not for me.
Don’t do white countertops-they show every speck. Do a speckled top which hides the specks and feels better with less effort. White counters look so good but don’t give you a break and they can stain so quickly and is a costly choice you will always be cleaning way more than the speckled surface granite etc.
I lived in an apartment with hardwareless cabinets in the kitchen and based on that experience I would never go that route, no matter the trend. When you’re in the kitchen your hands may be wet, you may have food on them without realizing it, and you’re touching all these surfaces all the time. Which means you have to clean these cabinets all the time where you may be leaving finger stains of all kind. Over time the paint starts wearing off just in those areas you’re constantly touching and cleaning. After a couple of years you may need to repaint all the cabinets. Adding handles to the kitchen cabinets is a must IMO, especially if they are just wood and paint. If they are some other material you may not need to repaint so often but you’ll still be wiping finger prints of them all the time. Who has time for that?
I have handles & knobs but I tend to leave open a door or drawer once I open it while cooking Then I close up it all when I’m done. It’s like the ease n efficiency of open shelving with the grime & dust free of cupboards! Plus no banging doors n drawers while I’m active. I would LOVE open shelving if not for how filthy everything gets I do use it still for daily use items.
Just use the dining room to eat, if u have one! Easy peasy 😊 I love the dark kitchens, beautiful! The combo of white & dark is also gorg! Buon Apettito ❤
My dream space (incl lg dining area adjoined) will have beadboard halfway up kitchen area and 2/3 up eating area. With wallpaper above both, except for backsplash area. Dining area will have a shallow shelf topping the beadboard for display. I may hang chairs from under shelf also, on pegs. I have simple country style armless chairs that would match the beadboard wood. My table extends. I like the look of chairs hanging.
I still love, love, love white kitchens. You can add your individual flair in many ways but those clean, white, smooth cabinets in modern easy to clean materials are wonderful. I will love mine for many years to come.
I get what you're saying. The concept of hiding the kitchen workspace behind a wall reminds us of corporate executive temp -living spaces in the '70s' and '80's. Think back to Diane Lane's temporary San Francisco divorce-apartment in Under The Tuscan Sun. No one wants that vibe, IMHO.
For me, some white is OK, but all-white make it hard to maintain daily. I love two colour cabinets. I like to have some natural wood in the house and wood cabinet. And stainless steel counter top in Japan make clean easier.
Lisa, love you but you missed the boat on white kitchens! My great grandmother, grandmother, mother, and I had/have white kitchens! It is a Southern Thing, Honey! I am sorry I have high end stainless steel appliances (the FINGER PRINTS) bcs I preferred my old white ones that gave me a more seemless, clean look. Is anyone else fed up with all the standing around being "hosted" as a guest in the kitchen? For 20 years I lived in a home built in 1936 in Miami Beach. It was very open. It had a fabulous butlers pantry. When we redid the kitchen, we did the butler's pantry, too. I had a formal dining room, living room, etc.I miss that gracious living. You cant even get some real kitchen gems like the built in paper towel, foil/wrap holder. Of course, I would like my MTV, Blockbuster, and flip phone, too.❤️
Wow! I actually like the idea of closing a kitchen behind doors! Hear me out, people with pets (or those who may be future pet parents). Just imagine: no more finding your cats walking on the counters, or your dogs with their big paws up on the counters trying to scarf down food! LOL! A closed kitchen sounds wonderful to me!😊
@@ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell my cats are not allowed on my counters and they have no interest because I don’t leave food out. They have a nice area to climb away from my counters and kitchen table
@@ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell My dogs were trained to not jump up with their front paws to the counter. And my cat as well, was well trained to not jump up on counters or tables. He had his own few cat trees and perches to use.
@@yourconnection9303 My four cats, now dearly departed, were all well behaved, also. Four cat trees, and lots of furniture. However, I have known several people who weren't so fortunate to have the same luck. The closed doors also help prevent any loose fur from flying around. I love the examples Lisa featured in her video. Different strokes for different folks!
@@ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell Very sorry about the loss of your cats. I can relate. I like to get idea of the closed kitchen as well. Each person has to decide what works best for their preferred design style.
@@yourconnection9303 Yes! We are all individuals, and it would be boring if we all were liking the same things. Variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes. Have a wonderful weekend!
Lisa this is such a great idea for a video ❤🤩 the one that you did about the modern French 🇫🇷 style is still my absolute favourite though. I still go back and rewatch that one for reference 😄❤️❤️❤️
I've been trounced before about white kitchens and I do realize it's a matter of taste. That said, we had a white kitchen in our first house because they were inexpensive. Hardwood cabinets are very expensive because hardwood is expensive and finishing hardwood is expensive. If I felt that my hardwood cabinets kitchen needed updating I might change the shade of the stain. Oak can turn a bit orange and some people like that. I like a darker stain on oak. Cherry kitchens look timeless and done right, oak can be stained to be close. White kittens remind me of a house built in the 50's to be inexpensive for people to buy. My dad used to find a piece of hardwood furniture being thrown out. He spent a lot of time to strip it off and finished it beautifully. Nothing can claim that the beauty of natural grain isn't timeless. A friend of ours succumbed to the trendy and painted her hardwood cherry chin cabinet white. Furniture homicide.
Is it efficient, practical and above all, beautiful? Answer yes to those questions and it doesn't matter one bit what the finishes or colors are. Because those are the real "timeless" issues. Popular trends to sell more things are irrelevant. Efficient - Does it work well with a minimum amount of frustration? Practical - Does it endure, give you the storage you need and allow for a great work flow? Beautiful - Does it bring you and others you welcome into your space happiness and joy?
Well my cabinets are painted beige with a chocolate glaze and I love them. My island is espresso and it looks good with the lighter cabinets in the rest of the kitchen.
Love this video and the beautiful colors of wood combined with white! I’m so over all white kitchens, it’s time for a little personality in the room we use the most. Thank you!
White kitchens are timeless, elegant and classic, especially when using white marbles, etc. White marble has been used in classical architecture for thousands of years.
🎉🎉🎉🎉here I am! I am an Italian architect but I have been living in Holland for many years. I love your videos, you have an approach that reflects me a lot. If you have the opportunity to have some European clients I will be happy to help you if you need it 😌❤️👷🏽 See you! Giulia
I disagree. Timeless looks are a smarter design choice for high value, more permanent areas like a kitchen and bathroom. If you want to follow trends, do so with soft touches, not hard touches.
All white looks okay if it has pops of colour, however I find all white too clinical and lab-like. I personally like a soft colour but it’s all in the eye of the beholder 😊
The reason why white kitchens are popular is the same reason stainless steel appliances and black trim or doors are popular…because they are neutral- very easy to design around.
Lisa, I love you and your channel and I take away things that I can incorporate into my home within reason financially. The majority of viewers of channels like this are middle class and we tend to be stuck with what we have and cannot keep up with cabinet, tile, floor or even lighting trends. I believe the best type of “trend” is the style and color of what one loves, not what’s new and trendy. However, thanks for showing us what’s out there. Now, can you help us work around those white, gray, beige, light-dark wood cabinets with easy decor pieces like linens, curtains, shades, etc so we can be a bit more “trendy” without breaking the bank?
an 11 min video is now gummed up with 4 minutes of ads/sponsors.....so sad, never used to be this way. That said white has always been the color of choice because if you do any serious cooking (my kitchen is not simply a showpiece) then it needs to be CLEANED- and bleach and other semi harsh cleansers are the go to for a truly deep cleaned kitchen that isn't industrial steel... with white you don't have to worry about bleaching out fragile colors.
I currently have colour on the walls and ceiling of my kitchen but it is north-facing and very dark so did all of the cabinets and shelving white but it's not feeling right to me. Looking at these kitchens, I think I would rather do the ceiling, walls, and upper cabinetry white (maybe countertops, too) while using colour for lower cabinets, open shelving, and maybe backsplash.
Hollywood revolutionized white kitchens “Something’s Gotta Give,” “The Holiday” and “It’s Complicated”. The designer changed everything. People walked away from these movies (2003) someday I will have one of those kitchens. White has always been popular in the south and wood Midwest, east coast.
Someone has to explain to me why in the US/Canada you put a white backsplash in a white kitchen, and you don't use contrast colors to make the white cabinets stand out and the lines more definite. This white on white boggles my mind. By the way, the bookcase at your back is made in contrast, Lisa. So? Any explanation?
I generally like minimlyst look but not when it comes to cabinets. I love some simple but beautiful handles as long as there not catching on cloths...hide the fridge and pantry sure but I still want a kitchen to look like a kitchen.
What you’re showing today is ugly and very expensive! Love white kitchen! Love a bit of natural wood and stone but you can add anything with the white palate.
I love white kitchens and don't like dark kitchen cabinets and don't care what the trends are. My kitchen is done with what I like and I don't care what others think.
Lisa, HELP! I have knotty alder wood kitchen cabinets. They are yellowish and the style is from 15 years ago. The cost to replace the fronts is crazy expensive. I have asked about staining but can't find a company to do it. I have taken out the inside of a few doors and added ribbed glass. It helps a little but the style is outdated. I'm embarrassed to even bring anyone into my home. When people say paint the cabinets I never hear anyone saying Alder Wood. I changed the handles but maybe the wrong color. Can handles be painted or spray painted? I live near San Luis Obispo, CA. Thanks!

I just moved from California into a traditional house in the South East and dropped 25k into refurbishing the kitchen with white cabinets and marble quartz countertops, and I love it! Because of where the kitchen was located in the home and it’s natural light, I wanted the room lighter and brighter. (It was originally all dark brown. ) It has 12 foot ceilings, and dark hardwood floors, an oil rubbed bronze kitchen faucet and matching cabinet/drawer pulls that don’t get caught on clothing. Wrought iron traditional chandelier, and wrought iron ironwork over the baker’s pantry windows, there is a fresh classic feel to it without that old lady look some traditional homes have. The kitchen is so big, I could have added an island, but opted for a white washed table that can expand from 80” to 120” and fit my whole family for the holidays. My only regret is that the new huge refrigerator doesn’t fit within the cabinet, so I’m looking at buying a kit to cover it. I don’t consider white cabinets outdated in my home.
I’ve never been much for following trends however I’m always trying to decorate in a way that will look great today and 20 years from now. Any advice to decorate in a timeless manor?
I've always hated white kitchens. Completely boring and sterile. Those ultra bold colors are just as bad though. I'm going with toned-down, desaturated colors for my kitchen.
White will ALWAYS be outdated & low budget in my world And beige or grey need to immediately be painted over in a COLOR or wallpapered. I love wallpapering a foyer and dining room and ofc, all the bedrms
I never liked the whole white kitchen. Also don't like the hideaway kitchen. Small and cold. What our sterile, sad beige blinding white trends need is to give in to depth and warmth and character. Warm wood with moldings that have character.
Who are the people that can afford to redo a kitchen to follow trends? That’s nutty. Lots of the trend elements seem to be for people who don’t cook. A kitchen should harmonize with the rest of the of your style and how you use it. I’ve yet to eat at a home where I dislike the food because the cabinets are the “wrong “ color.
Real Europeans (especially Italians in the US & CA) solve all these problems simply by having 2 kitchens. One to cook in that is totally out of sight in the basement or cellarway and the other is just for show. The stove needs to be lightly dusted once in a while and you are perpetually prepared to recieve company at a moments notice.😁
I live in an all Navajo White apartment. My kitchen has retro tile backsplash with pink and yellow and turquoise tiles every so often. I did some research, found out my apartment has mcm lines, and did more studying especially you, Lisa Ma'am. 1 color with white adds intetest without being too boring, so I went with Mamie Pink for the coffee pot and toaster. Did Warhol cats, Magritte Cloud in a Glass and a Van Gogh puzzle for art on the walls to make it a little more dining room than eat in kitchen. More than that would it look cramped instead of spacious-cozy. Thanks to you, Lisa!!😊😊😊
I remember the audience gasping loudly when they saw Diane Keaton’s all white kitchen in something gotta give in 2003. That was the beginning of the trend for all white kitchens. Everyone wanted one.
White kitchens came about due to Hollywood movies-bottom line-Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated. The designer changed kitchens. My mouth dropped when I saw some of those kitchens and said someday….
I'm intellectually chaotic and rabidly eccentric so I prefer not to contact "Better Help", thanks very much. In terms of kitchens, I'd rather keep it simple and use the money I save to hire a maid and dine out frequently.

I have handles & knobs but I tend to leave open a door or drawer once I open it while cooking
Then I close up it all when I’m done.
It’s like the ease n efficiency of open shelving with the grime & dust free of cupboards! Plus no banging doors n drawers while I’m active.
I would LOVE open shelving if not for how filthy everything gets
I do use it still for daily use items.
Has not been my experience living in our home for 24 years. No paint looks worn.
@@roxannsouci3037 It was my experience in an apartment just in two years.
Just use the dining room to eat, if u have one! Easy peasy 😊 I love the dark kitchens, beautiful! The combo of white & dark is also gorg! Buon Apettito ❤
I agree! It's all about creating a space that works for you. 😊
I'm moving into new home soon and this advice is invaluable!

Sounds great!
I still love, love, love white kitchens. You can add your individual flair in many ways but those clean, white, smooth cabinets in modern easy to clean materials are wonderful. I will love mine for many years to come.
Ugh, over them I think because people over did it
I love all the different ideas - something for everyone and new trends to think about.
I get what you're saying. The concept of hiding the kitchen workspace behind a wall reminds us of corporate executive temp -living spaces in the '70s' and '80's. Think back to Diane Lane's temporary San Francisco divorce-apartment in Under The Tuscan Sun. No one wants that vibe, IMHO.
haha! I do remember that!
Europeans love it
White kitchens are clean and classic
Yes they are!
For me, some white is OK, but all-white make it hard to maintain daily. I love two colour cabinets. I like to have some natural wood in the house and wood cabinet. And stainless steel counter top in Japan make clean easier.
I totally agree!
Thank you very much as always. That is true, that is what we do eg. here in Germany.
Inspired and can’t wait for my reno and new kitchen - Thanks Lisa 🏠👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🇬🇧🕊🙏🏾
Appreciate this so much. I am a fan of modern kitchens too. 🧡🧡
You are so welcome!
Yay! Thank you!
Knives and fire! 🤣👀 Love ya, Lisa and co.!

Sounds great!
Love this video and the beautiful colors of wood combined with white! I’m so over all white kitchens, it’s time for a little personality in the room we use the most. Thank you!
Yes!
Giulia
Ciao Ciao!! Piacere! xo L
I disagree. Timeless looks are a smarter design choice for high value, more permanent areas like a kitchen and bathroom. If you want to follow trends, do so with soft touches, not hard touches.
All white kitchens looks like science labs. That’s MY opinion. 😂😂
Yes! Far to sterile to be the heart of the home.
Yes!! Lol
10:02 Omg, we share the same tile & grout color! 🤍 Looks awesome here too, love the hunter green base island.
So cool!
All white looks okay if it has pops of colour, however I find all white too clinical and lab-like. I personally like a soft colour but it’s all in the eye of the beholder 😊
I totally agree!
The reason why white kitchens are popular is the same reason stainless steel appliances and black trim or doors are popular…because they are neutral- very easy to design around.
I love white cabinets. Classic. 😃
Of course! I’d LUV to answer questions and help over at my site in my site... dezignspace.com
an 11 min video is now gummed up with 4 minutes of ads/sponsors.....so sad, never used to be this way.
White kitchens and bathrooms are the oldest and most traditional style. They will always be appropriate.
White equates to cleanliness.

Some of these trends look SO dated to me! The hunter green and wallpaper is from the 90s! 😂
Love wood in my cabinetry as it adds such warmth!
Right on
Thank you Lisa!!!
Moved into a white kitchen and couldn’t be happier
Thanks!
Ooh...that knotty pine! Check Out My GAME-Changing Course here: dezignermethod.lpages.co/information . or say 'HELP" at: hello@lisaholt.com and I'll send you more info!
I love that curved fluted island so pretty!
The only trend I'm loving out of these is adding back in darker as I am a fan of darker cabinets still! 😂

I totally agree!
Thanks Lisa ❤
White will ALWAYS be outdated & low budget in my world
And beige or grey need to immediately be painted over in a COLOR or wallpapered. I love wallpapering a foyer and dining room and ofc, all the bedrms
I don’t like the doors. When open, ppl would have to walk around them or keep bumping into them! Def not for me.
Dullsville. I love dark cabinets.
I put in dark wood cabinets with an ivory floor and ivory Cambria. Looks beautiful and classy.
I live my white kitchen as well. It will always be a classic.
Can‘t believe you support this sponsor! These services have been proven to be useless if not dangerous for people in need.
Please cite the proof. I would be interested to read your sources.
Hi I like your designer Idea's. Do you have Idea's what color to paint a sewing room?

White kitchen started from the 2003, somtuings gota give movie the Hampton beach house kitchen
Does all this color work on a galley kitchen or is it to small?

black or Dark kitchens are not good they are dreary
I like this trend
EVERYONE should have a copy of NKBA Kitchen and Bathroom Planning Guidelines
Some of those kitchens look boring.
😁👍 new subbie!
Thanks for subbing! Welcome!!!!
I remember the audience gasping loudly when they saw Diane Keaton’s all white kitchen in something gotta give in 2003. That was the beginning of the trend for all white kitchens. Everyone wanted one.
May be in the US. Scandi kitchen were and are traditionally white.
White kitchens came about due to Hollywood movies-bottom line-Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated. The designer changed kitchens. My mouth dropped when I saw some of those kitchens and said someday….
If you keep your design classic it will never date.
Let’s consider benefits of European hidden kitchen and Asian dry/wet dirty kitchen
Completely dark kitchens - just no
4:17 - too many vertical lines and so grey. Yikes!
Please… I was raised in the 60’s and we had a white farmers kitchen THEN, can we we say, not much is new….😂
As long as white cabinets are sold in stock, white kitchens will be popular
White kitchens are so hard to keep clean with families. Yet colors or wood tones end up running their course within five years as well.
Kitchens should not be trends. Put in what you like and what is your style that you love.
White kitchens are timeless.
Yes they are!
🙏
No, no, no. I guess don’t agree with this video. Because I love my white kitchen.
I'm intellectually chaotic and rabidly eccentric so I prefer not to contact "Better Help", thanks very much.
In terms of kitchens, I'd rather keep it simple and use the money I save to hire a maid and dine out frequently.
