Had this guy seen my first attempt of mudding with a 3" wide blade he would've laughed his ass off....Thank God for these videos. For any first timers out there, I cannot stress enough the importance of having the right tools for the job, no matter what the job may be. Do yourself a big favor first timers and get the right tools, you'll be very, VERY glad you did!!!

I'm renovating a bedroom right along with you and I want to say thanks. The videos are a great help. I did plaster work last in 1973 when my dad and I built the interior walls of this house. Now, in 2019 I have returned home after a zillion termites had their way with some of my interior walls. After tearing them out and rebuilding the stud work and walls (this time with ground contact lumber), replacing the electrical wiring and boxes, and hanging the sheetrock, I'm in the plaster stage. Again thanks for the refresher course. A lot has changed since 1973 (including my back and muscles) and it helps to see how new materials and tools have made the job easier. Keep the videos coming.

I've watched your taping and joint compound videos countless times at this point. I'm about to go for my corners and a second coat on all the seams. I bought the 4" x11" sheetrocking trowel that you use today. I noticed they all have a curve lengthwise. I didn't expect that. I'm used to concrete trowels being straight. I sanded my edges and will proceed tomorrow. I ran my sheetrock vertically rather than horizontally, the only butt joint I have is in the center of the ceiling. It's a 16' x 30' workshop that I've been building, it's a big job to me.
    Thanks for your knowledge.

The video was excellent in "how to mud ", great simple step by step explanations on why you do it. Thank you for posting. On filling up electrical boxes; The method I use is an extra step but it does help the next trade; fill it up with paper and or card board, and wide masking tape to hold. , I have used drywall on occasions. In a residential renovation , this step helps the finishing around the boxes, and makes the electrician happy!

mate your a pro, that's a hard day's physical work. while also keeping up your focus and concentration and not go on auto pilot and start day dreaming. I'm about to do my toilet walls after wall paper, I prepped a car for paint before with bogging and sanding, and sanding and sanding, but there's nothing better than getting that flat mirror finish. The OCD in me comes out in force :)

I found your video series after hanging, before mudding. VERY helpful, great tips. I sent the link to my brother who is doing a project. I'm a homeowner/DIY...this project used 30 sheets of 4X12' drywall, might have bit off more than I can chew - but you've saved me a lot of aggravation (and sanding!).

Question for you...part of this renovation project is a bathroom. I ripped out the old ceiling due to mold and mildew. I did address the root cause and have fixed what was causing the mold. I had a contractor come in and he did the original bathroom build - shoddy workmanship. Looks like he only used one coat of mud, this resulted in the paper absorbing moisture which caused the paint to fail. I can also see the screw heads through the paint. I tore the paper out and replaced it with mold resistant FG tape. I also had an insulator use dense pack cellulose before I re-installed the bathroom ceiling with Moisture Resistant sheet rock.Question - I had planned on skim coating the walls with Green Lid joint compound (hide imperfections, bury screw heads, blend seems, etc.). Is there any value in skim coating over the ceilings new MR sheetrock (purple paper)? Will the joint compound help protect the paper from moisture getting to it?

45 for filling gaps and corners. regular for everything else. the closer you are to finish the wetter the mud to help reduce sanding.

      Great, thanks bro!
By "corners use 45", do you mean use 45 on the first coat only in the corners and then regular on the coats thereafter? Or all costs in the corners use 45? And, should I use regular for ALL costs including taping on butt and tapered joints, except th ed first coat on gaps? Thanks again!!

I'm still confused about when to use the hard setting mud. I get that it's for filling gaps, but I thought you use the normal premixed compound for the tape? Are you using the 45 minute mud for the second and third coats on the tape and screws?

  • @davejimgut
    @davejimgut 6 років тому

Hello. Is the purpose of multiple layers simply to widen the volume height of mud so that the eye doesn’t pick up level changes over a wider area ? What are the different types of mud you use and lastly, does stiffness or quality of the knives matter much ?

When you refer to outside pressure near the end of the video, do you mean you have pressure on the knife over the tape with less pressure on the outside of the joint so that mud is pushed out from the center of the joint to the outside.....and therefore not creating a really thick tape joint ?

What kind of finish mud do you find in Ottawa? Also, if finish mud scratches easier, isn't there an advantage to using all-purpose mud - gonna be hard to sand it but wouldn't that offer a stronger wall/finish?

Great instructional videos. Is machine mud all u need to finish a basement project? Given that gaps are filled with 45 min mud? Thx

Hey Jeff, Sent some photos to you from my basement project. Didn't know if you got them. I'll send you some more of the second coat of mud today.

Oh cool... Thanks for the videos. I wouldn't have been able to get this job done without your help. I understand the art of mudding and what it takes to do it. When I first started I was covered in mud. Now I'm using the hawk more to catch mud and the mess isn't all over me. Thanks again Jeff

These videos are great! Quick question, any advice on curved vs. flat trowels? My local big supply stores only have curved 11 x 4 1/2" drywall trowels in stock. Looks like you're using a straight trowel. Is a flooring trowel is the same- will that work? Thanks!

I ended up buying a straight trowel in the flooring section. Huge difference! So much easier, and more like the results you're getting. Won't bother with the curved trowel again. Thanks!

Great videos, ive been a diy'er most of my life and its nice to learn new techniques. One question, do i use the same compound for third coat and final count

Quick question, around the 4:00 mark, is the metal corner getting it's 2nd, or third coat? Last video he mentioned coming back in 30 minutes to apply a second coat. Not sure if this is that application.

What drywall compound are you using?. I'm inspired to do my garage. Also if you can tell me what kind of compounds to use first and in the middle and finish. That thing confuses me. I live watching your videos. Thank you.

Interesting to see the differences between Canadian and Australian methods. I still don't get why you don't use glue on the gyprock. (Drywall).. The job looks good and I picked up a few tips that I can use, so thanks.

Newbie question: I just found a section where I'd applied plaster on a ceiling joint and missed the first 2 feet with the trowel. So it dried and cracked all over. Should I try to scrape it off or sand it flattish or call in a professional? I'm not going for perfection on this first job (it's only my workshop), but I'd like to know how to fix a big gaff like this without wasting too much time on it. I doubt I'll notice it, since I didn't see this 'til I was coming back for the final coat.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

Either sand it down or fill it in. the crack is from drying too much mud at once. You can fill it in without cracking again since it is not structural.
