why IRON MAIDEN is the GREATEST metal band | The Trooper

- why IRON MAIDEN is the GREATEST metal band...some solid evidence for that claim is their hit song, "The Trooper." The Trooper contains all the elements that have come to define the genre of metal music. Things like gallop rhythms or "chugging", harmonized leads in 3rds and 6ths. Fast tempos and soaring vocals via Bruce Dickinson. No doubt bands like Megadeth and Metallica were influenced by their sound. In this video I break down the music theory behind this iconic piece of art about the Crimean War. Take your music theory chops to the next level with my full course below. Does the pope wear a hat?
I wouldn't say the greatest metalband of all time, I think that spot is reserved fot Black Sabbath for obvious reasons but certainly Maiden is Top 3, Metallica completing the list. Don't know which band I'd place on spot 2 but maybe Maiden cause they came from word to mouth and of course they made 5 consecutive albums and not one song on it was bad. The Trooper has this quality that it's an uptempo song with great harmony and the chorus you would rather expect in an popsong but it doesn't sound like a popsong at all therein lying their brilliance.
SURE 🤘🏻😤🤘🏻
Yes.
@Ilshat Valeyev you to much baby to understand
Adrian's got his infamous gold top Les Paul Deluxe with the mini-humbuckers that he bought as a teenager.
I remember the first time I saw Iron Maiden live. I was blown away by how loud the audience was. They didn't just sing along to the choruses. They didn't just sing along the verses. They sang everything. Intro. Verse. Chorus. Guitar solos. The energy in the room was positively nuclear.
I've been a Maiden fan since 82 when I was 12, I absolutely love Iron Maiden and killers but when I heard number of the beast I was blown away, just the way it sounds and Clive was such a powerful drummer, not hitting them hard powerful but his style was amazing. Then I heard piece of mind, I remember listening to this album repeatedly and was really blown away and that was the ultimate lineup of bad asses right out of the gate, Steve, Nicko, Dave , Adrian, Bruce, the dual harmony's on opposite scales, switching back and forth from rhythm to lead's and then Bruce's vocals on top of it all, plus the historical content and story telling was phenomenal to me. I always wanted to see them live since I was a kid and never got to until several years ago here in Washington where I live, they were doing the book of souls world tour and stopped by Tacoma at the Tacoma dome and I knew I'd regret it for the rest of my life if I never got to see them so I got paid from work and didn't care if I couldn't afford it or not, I went straight to ticket Master when there was one and bought a ticket, I could only afford a seat way up in the stadium rows but I didn't care. I was directly Infront of the stage but way up there but could look down onto thousands of people on the floor and could see them on stage and of course they had the big screens. It was a dream come true man, me and 35,000 people sung every song and they blew the roof off and sounded phenomenal live. Greatest metal band ever to me and it's given me strength and hope through my life believe it or not.✌️
Me two 82 12 and found maiden
Yeah, I feel the same, bro!
@Scorpions I saw Iron Maiden open for Scorpions in 1982.
@Scorpions Literally just saw the video for "Run to the hills" on MTV before I saw them, until then I thought Paul D'ianno was still in the band cause MTV was playing "Wrathchild" like crazy! Good times. Wish I could have seen Paul D'ianno as well. Thanks for answering 🤘
@Scorpions They NEVER played Iron Maiden on the radio back then, you had to get your news from MTV. Lol
Iron Maiden ..the greatest metal band in the history of the universe
Amen
with 125 million sale metallica is the greatest of them all
@@spyderjason5253 I love both however iron maiden has more great albums than Metallica has
@@spyderjason5253 having more album sales doesn't mean there the better band LOL Iron Maiden blows them out of the water
@@spyderjason5253Dude, who cares? Taylor Swift has sold more albums than anybody 😂
Dave Murray's perfected Legato makes Liveperformances smooth and tight.
Yes, they are the greatest metal band. From composition to their live performances, they're hard to beat. And yes, they do put out duds, but that's because they are not afraid to fail. They go all in. Nothing more metal than that.
You got that right. And the great thing about it, iron maiden writes their own stuff. They don't pay people to write for them. I'm sure they could have sold out and had some big producer and Ghost writers come in but that's not the way they roll.
Iron Maiden was the first band that that got me hooked on metal, way back in 1987. I saw them in concert on the No Prayer For The Dying tour. It's the best show I've ever seen to date.
Same for me, but in 1997. Saw them in 1999 (along Megadeth), when Bruce returned.
MAIDEN will always be the greatest band ever to me.
My son and wife have been instructed to play nothing but MAIDEN at my wake when I pass.
My son will put their entire cd catalog in my casket so I have them with me forever.
Dude thats hilarious, and awesome!
My hero❤️🩹💘🤘🤘🤘
That is fantastic--a great idea! Well done sir
One of the best metal bands for sure.
My favorite song is Infinite Dreams from the 7th son album.
The first metal song i ever heard was "The evil that men do", i actually saw the video clip and i was impressed. The lyrics were the thing that hooked me but the music was very interesting and totally out of what i was listening at the time, synth-pop/europop etc.
Only metal band to never sell out.
Yeah I remember when Emperor made this electronic hip hop dance album back in the day...oh wait...
Manowar?
Bruce doesn't sound much different to how he did on piece of mind, amazing, he's still got it after all these years.
Yes, Iron Maiden is the best metal band of all time. No question about it. When I was 13, my buddy introduced me to metal. I heard Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. I wasn't sold! Then came Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and I was interested. Somewhere in Time made me realize there was something special happening with this band. Seventh Son was my obsession though. And so it went and to this day, 31 years later, I'm still listening to them daily.
The Trooper is the second song on my running mix. Tempo is perfect for me. What's first, you ask? Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Flatt and Scruggs. Third? Party in the USA, Miley Cyrus. I'm an eclectic runner.
Try loneliness of the long distance runner by Iron Maiden 😀
Put Winter Dreams on by Accept and stay on that momentum
Try fields of gold by sting. You’ll end up walking
Foggy mountain breakfown is perfect
Nice to see another fellow metalhead runner! Great playlist you got there.
Seventh son of a seventh son is probably my favorite album but make no mistake, I like them all. 🤘
That album is fucking amazing ahahaha. The only maiden's album i love ALL the songs
Either SSOSS or Somewhere in Time.
Been a maiden fan for over 4 decades and despite many other glorious metal bands in that period I would pretty much agree that Maiden may very well be the best of all time.
And Shred,,, your video of using the Trooper and turning it into a orchestral piece is outstanding .
I'm a 42 year old guy from germany and for the last 30 years electronic music of all styles was the thing i loved. Techno, acid, house and electro was my thing and i really was into it with passion.
A few month ago i started to give Iron maiden more attention because i heared the trooper for the first time ever. I really was blown away because it's a song that is just big fun to listen to. I started to listen more from maiden, hellowed be thy name, face in the sand, aces high, moonchild.
What can i say? I never cried so much, i never felt so much with music, i never was so overwhelmed from music like with the music of iron maiden. It's power of life, it's passion and beauty. Maiden gives me so much more quality in life and such an uplifting feeling. I love them so much and it's a little sad that i discovered them so late.
I will see them live the first time in Dortmund Germany this summer and i really looking forward to that.
This is my point of view to the best metal band ever, because they really changed my life. And it's not just a simple saying, they really did it for me.
The Trooper is a masterpiece. It makes me feel sooo energetic while working out and makes me play my "Air guitar" 🤣
Love the musical breakdown. Great work. I learned something!
This is really cool shred. More song analysis please !!
In tenth grade my guitarist and myself played this song in Speech class. One bass, one guitar, no singing. We played the entire song. The speech was supposed to be about the electric guitar but we didn't talk much at all. The English classroom had a stage in it, so we hopped up on stage, plugged in and my buddy said, this is The Trooper by Iron Maiden, 1, 2, 3, ,4, and then we cranked it out, but when we finished, the English teacher said, that was great, but tell us something about the guitar. As my friend picked each string individually he said, this is E, A, D, G, B, and E, these are the string names and this is Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix and we kicked right into it. A couple teachers from classrooms near by stuck their heads in to watch. The whole school heard us. It was awesome. We were the talk of the school for a day or two.
Cool story man. I hope you are still rocking!
Here from ichika’s cover of the trooper without distortion. It’s amazing sounding
I believe they are the greatest. Absolutely.
They're absolutely the goats. never put out a bad album (no, not even virtual XI) And their run of 5 albums between 82 and 88 is easily the best out of any band imo. 10/10 albums: Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in time. 9.5/10 albums: Number of the Beast and Seventh Son
Plus bruce and steve are the GOATS of their instruments, and dave+adrian is the best guitar duo of all time.
E qual seria a nota dos primeiros 2 albums? Eles são tâo bons quanto o Seventh Son
@@rockmork9121 uns 7 pro primeiro e 6.5 pro killers. Sao bons mas pra mim nao tem mta comparação
The last few albums are borefests tho slow long and tedious
@@James-hh1lq yeah i guess if you don’t like prog the last couple albums wont be for you
@@carlosmarques3714I'll stick to testament.
Your videos motivated me to get my guitar back out of the case after 15 years and start playing scales again
Maiden was my favorite band back when I was in high school. After high school... I found Symphony-X. 25 years later.... I found LOVEBITES. The princesses from Japan are the future. Check out the song: "Golden Destination", and you will hear the strong Maiden influence in Lovebites music.
I think that Iron Maiden definetly is one of the best bands of alle time because they got such a wide range of sounds like this incredible "running" Songs like the trooper and aces high but also Songs that are just really mental like empire of the clouds weich is just unbelivable to just keep this high level of nice and different musical parst
First and last time I saw a maiden was in 1984 I think it was the life after death I don't remember I think it was their fourth album the queensryche open I had a great fucking time I never saw him again miss Metallica and 86 Cliff died sucked
Love the video.
Love all of Shred's videos.
But.. did we just talk about 1)Iron Maiden 2) Galloping and not mention the heart beat of the song.. the bass?
3:00 even looking at a simple image like this yeras after i have goosebumps and bumpsgoose. I heard them in 2018 in London , kind regards from Brazil
What I love about iron maiden is that they take you on a journey with their music. As a guitarist, I usually listen to riffs, drums, bass or chorus. I don't really get too deep into the words. However, when I listen to iron maiden I feel like I'm listening to an audio book story with music in the background.
Great video Shred Master, as always! Can you tell us what's behind the triple harmony you mentioned?
That s a great songs, i Remember listening to it in loop when i was 10. Wow, that intro and that gallop still give me goosebumps🔥🔥🔥
The extra harmony layer is because the song was originally written with 2 guitarists, Adrian and Dave. After Bruce had left temporarily and took Adrian with him, Janick Gers was added along with Blaze Bailey on vocals. (The clansman era) Then after Bruce and Adrian returned they went ahead and kept Janick, which even widened their sound.
Actually Adrian left then Bruce, there are a few discs with Bruce and Janick before he left (No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark). Adrian ended up playing on Bruces' third Solo disc (which is PHENOMENAL if you don't have it - Accident of Birth) then they both came back for Brave New World and Janick stayed as you note.
Amazing work Shred, and yes Maiden indeed is the greatest of them all. It would've been much better if your drink of choice for this video had been a Trooper Beer!! Peace sir keep up the good work. This is probably one of their best banger live it's a perfectly crafted song for iron Maidens signature components, everything is there, guitar harmonies, solos, the gallop, Nicko's insane fills and the Air Raid Siren! Up the Irons!
So, Mr Shred, you are clearly well trained in the art of music. You are also a big lover by it's finest genre, METAL!
I would love it if you did a reaction/ ananysis/ roast show of unsigned/ demo bands and artists. Giviing your 5 cents about the songwriting, the general sound and how they can improve.
Appreciate you Shred. Definitely a fan of all these vids. I don't think there's any metal music schools better than this man. Drank a Kona Longboard for this one. Cheers 🍻.
And I think one of my favorite metal bands...well I listen to mostly symphonic metal. But I think Black Sabbath deserves a shout out. Not really metal, call it what you want, but definitely a big "hard rock" band that's done a lot for metal in history. And just because, my best symphonic metal band, probably Epica. I'd love to see you expand to something like that every once and a while too.
Iron Maiden are a great band. Amazing song-writers and performers. However old they get, they still seem like they've got the energy of men in their 20s and 30s on stage. They've always had a great grasp of melodies and how to write them and use them to make them memorable.
My first memory was of this song being played on our old vinyl player.
Been a fan since.
Always cool to see Dave play a Les Paul! Janick always plays a strat and Adrian’s got that green strat he’s played a lot on recent tours. I wonder if Dave uses the neck pick-up on his Les Paul’s to get that signature, buttery “Dave” tone.
I do miss the Ibanez Destroyers both Dave and Adrian played in the early eighties!
you have GOT to check out fates warning and their guitarist's (Jim Matheos) solo work
An easy way to explain the two gallops to, say, another guitarist:
8:19 - Iron Maiden gallop
8:29 - Slayer gallop
im just getting into Iron Maiden. thanks for the insights
A perfect maiden appreciation video that makes an old man happy.
up until @10:11 i was worried that would be no burping in this video :)
Its cool shred makes videos of the hit songs because some music elitists sometimes forget that the hits are popular for a reason.
I absolutely agree about they're the GREATEST metal band. 🤘
the trooper and run to the hills my all time favs what made me start playing bass is that hearing steves bass line i loved the fast gallops and trying to recreat them at first loll seemed impossible but i pushed on and maneged to get it right steve harris always been a A1 class artist
I got (back) into metal (I'm a 'Baby Buster' - tail end boomer) mostly because I wanted to up my technique. I love traditional Jazz guitar and 'Gypsy' guitar. My favorite metal bands are guys like Maiden that really build orchestration into their sound. Gotta say I like Nightwish as well (oh, well, lol).
Maiden is consistantly good , and amazing to see live ive been into them since 83 , and learned all those records.. a staple of metal guitar and always worth the listen and to learn their parts
Just love your perception so much. Especially the one in Unforgiven by Metallica.
Love from India 🇮🇳❤️, man.
Seen Maiden 13 times, never gets old.
I owned Maiden records before Metallica came along and have been lucky to have seen them at Donington park twice. Excellent sound and professional with good old English humour attached, they were the metal band that took it up a notch. And not to mention Harris driving bass and Nico,s drums still sound tight in a massive field. Nice 1 fella...
I'm still waiting for the Floods. And Shred, what are your impressions of Korn's new album and the show that was?
I'm Chilean and even though I wasn't that very concert I've seen Maiden live three times on that stadium, It's absolutely incredible lml
the greatest metal band for sure… no doubt, many greats, but no band as consistent & grand as maiden
I'm so pleased a true musician, a true modern metal guitarist who understands music and his genre so brilliantly has the 'guts' to put Maiden above Sabbath and Metallica - their melodic yet anthemic shredathons will always hold them head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion. And their influence is so much further reaching, you hear all their techniques emulated in today's metal, rock and even punk and some 'trap metal'... it's amazing to see and hear!
Dude, wtf is "trap metal", lol.
Shred, react to Shouth American bands, like Rata Blanca...
Cheers from Mercedes, Uruguay.
great video and i have to agree, for me Iron Maiden IS the Greatest metal band of all time, but I also recognize that could just be my personal favorite.. how can we elevate one band over another when it comes to bands like Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Dio...
I would love to see more videos like this, watching a live performance and breaking it down! Can you do Where Eagles Dare?!
these videos you’re doing are awesome man! you should do some randy rhoads next ?
I saw Black Sabbath 2016 in Montreal. They were HUGE with ONE guitar.
love iron maidens lead guitar melodic and clever, like the guitar is talking to you 🤘
I really dig your song analysis videos.
Would you consider doing one on a Polyphia song like GOAT or Aviator?
Some of these newer metal bands are writing stuff people didn't know could be played.
Jason Richardson's solo in Aviator is absolutely mind blowing, too.
I would say 100% YES!!! Up the Irons!
Oh, shit, now you've earned more than a subscribe -- you've earned respect. 🤘
the trooper! still gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing!!!🤘 old school metal 🤘👍
I have two certains in life, I'm gonna die someday, and Iron Maiden is the gratest heavy metal band of all time
To answer that question, listen to the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album.
You’re cool. Subscribed.
I saw them tonight and let me tell you they are greater than the greatest!
Up the Irons!! 🤘
I wouldn't say they are the greatest, but they're definitely up there among the best!!! I'll never stop listening to iron maiden!! from the 80's to now they're awesome!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Strong case for the greatest - super-consistent, created their own style of music, all super-talented (and underrated) players and composers, hugely influential, instantly recognizable.
4:10 Sounds like Acid King for some reason.
you should do a vid about infinite dreams by iron maiden. an absolutely beautiful song
Shred Gods are usually trying to play as fast as possible, which is great, but if done incorrectly, isn’t good at all.
Take a look at terrible, “faster guitar player,” videos, they’re playing at 6,500,000,000 miles per second, but the problem is, it sounds terrible and it vibrates the soul in a negative way.
Music is about what makes us feel a certain, special way, and we don’t want to just BE fast, we want to FEEL fast, and that’s what helps to make Iron Maiden so amazing in my opinion.
They feel so fast, heart-pumping, blazing and awesome!
My favourite song of all time is hallowed be thy name. Up the irons 🤘🏻
In my book Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Pantera are the METAL GOATs. The Trooper is infectious, the gallop draws you in the lyrics are a story, and keep it moving forward. The sing-a-long wordless chorus is fun to belt out. I used to see a band in the late 80's (ScareKrow) that did Trooper followed by "For Whom The Bell Tolls"
When I was a kid I knew this song before I even knew what metal was
Love Maiden, seen them eight times but I can't put them ahead of Sabbath and Pantera. And to add to it Piece of Mind is still my favorite Maiden album since it came out again just a good darker vibe on that album.
Helloween would be the best concurrent. All the next ones start already far away, even Savatage, that composed 5 killer albums . If you consider the best albums of Blind Guardian, these former bands have like 5 of same or better level. Metallica (that would be the greatest in matter of influence) Dream Theater, Black Sabbath etc. are still bands that you have to "find" the right era or albums. Megadeth is a great authentic sound, but lacks of the reach and wide range of musical expression that Iron Maiden mastered, something that has a lot with the vocals to do. SImilar for Ozzy´s solo carrer, it is great and have awesome albums that are a in metal reference , but still something more specific. Of course Black Sabbath is a classic, but i see as hard rock / metal , similar like Savatage. In matter of consistence, depth, and influence, Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson solo carrer are hard to win over. They are like the Palestrina or Bach of their era, they are the climax of a genre and an ideal. The greatness of Blind Guardian was to find another musical category possible after all this, still using these elements. Iron Maiden is not only the greatest metal band, but the greatest band ever until now, because achieved what every band would like to have achieved, independently and by own musical efforts.Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, have a huge historical importance, but no comparation with the sacrality of Maiden´s songs and Maiden´s 5 or 6 album-masterpieces. They are respected and praised, they are not music for the coffee shop or for a bier at the pub, like FInal Countdown, War Pigs or Starway to Heaven. They are not just a momentary experience of a cool sound, but a whole cultural statement and give expression to the lack of the "dyonisiac" element, lack of masculinity, honor, sense of freedom, recognition of a divine order, the lack of this in our culture and the culture of the last decades. In this sense, it is a missing voice of the past, and the rudimentary moments of Iron Maiden are very supported by this, what makes them paradoxically the most sophisticated in terms of popular music (from the musical point of view, not music theoretically). If one is not satisfied with what Iron Maiden did until Brave New World, he is not able to hear properly, or needs to afford time and knowledge to apreciate the best operas and symphonies...
After all those heavy thoughts, I bet some WAP --aw man you beat me to it! 1:34
Yes
Yes! They are,....simple;-)
Probably the best live band of all time, too;-P
Great video, Brother.
Up the mighty Irons!!!!
Not possibly, definitely... UP THE IRONS!!!
The greatest indeed. Their influence on metal artists is beyond comparison
i agree with all of this! Muahhhhaaahh
I think that Killers is a first song with gallop style.
@shred i guess you mean E minor is in the key of maiden ...
Hallowed Be Thy Name is the GOAT
Rock on brother 🤘
You know I don't know what it is but I never really got into Iron Maiden maybe one day it'll hit me
its my favourites band thanks
Love the trooper
They are the greatest
On another note Senjutsu is a phenomenal album by a bunch of old men from blighty. Seventh Son is possibly my favourite album by them.
Clive burr thanks !
They are definitely in the top 5 of all time
They're not the reason I picked up the guitar, but they are probably the reason I never put it down. Are they the best...someone needs to be so yes, why not!
I never see Nicko hit that tiny tom.
South Americans LOVE their metal
The fact that they get worse and still are great shows how much ahead they were ;)
Do you know the history of this song live in Argentina?
