My take, we got a LHP Paxton who was a present need, RHP Priester who is controlled pitching, who we desperately need....Jansen replaces McGuire, plus he's a right hand bat and he's a great catcher, game caller that helps our pitchers.....Sims and Garcia are upgrades over the waiver wire pitchers currently in our bullpen.
Overall given the state of the market Breslow did very well. He cleared out prospects that weren't going to help the team, except maybe Yorke, and improved where he could without pulling a Padres approach and gut your farm system, so I'm grading a B minus.....
Great live last night Corbin and awesome analysis video today. Keep up the great work 👍

Considering that the new MLB playoff format has now turned the trade deadline into a sellers market, I'd give Craig Breslow a solid B grade in well navigating and balancing short term vs long term roster needs ...
Quinn Priester was well worth acquiring providing the organization another young starter with some decent potential for Nick Yorke who unfortunately was the "odd man out" when it came to the number of capable middle infielders already present in the system ... Another big plus is this was another "one for one" deal as was with the Lucas Sims trade in which Breslow did not have to include any additional prospects ...
Breslow also deserves credit for picking up three veteran pitchers in Sims, James Paxton, and Luis Garcia in bolstering the pitching staff for the remainder of the season without sacrificing the future by having to trade away any top ten caliber prospects ...

I feel like Breslow is proving that he is willing to overpay to make legit improvements to this team that he really believes in. He isn't like Chaim Bloom who would essentially only make moves that he saw as having little to no risk, like only getting Luis Urias last year.

Absolute Failure F-. They didn't address this three Stooges IF defense. I blame this all on Ownership. The image of Henry in the suite giving Breslow his marching orders made me barf 🤮🤢. This Man is committed to Profits not to winning. Stop giving him your money💰💰

  • @stevegallo8483
    @stevegallo8483 2 місяці тому

As you said, it was a sellers' market. By making moves at the deadline, the front office showed faith in the team on the field (unlike the last 2 seasons). Breslow made the moves he could make to try to fill the team's needs. Nobody should have expected big splash moves. I doubt that ownership would have allowed any to happen.

I completely agree with this trades, i know is not big names or truly impactful moves, but for what i read they wanted to get Tanner Scott and the first thing they ask for him was Marcelo and Anthony. Im my opinion this is not the season to go all in, maybe next year when Tanner Houck and Crawford had more experience trowing the complete season.

Overall, I'm pleased with the additions. First, I've been advocating for a left-hander in the rotation, and that happened. The catcher addiction was an upgrade. Two relievers to bolster the bullpen will be a welcome upgrade when they get here. In addition, we get Grissom by the 9th of August and Casas 10 days later. All they have to do is start winning.

There are 4 classes of MLB players:
Star, the total winner makes others better.
Winner, above average players that compete really hard.
Marginal, average talent player/below average performer.
Loser, players that just cost you games repeatedly.
Paxton, Jansen, Sims, and Garcia are all winners/solid workers and players.
Mcguire, Anderson, Walter, Wingenter, Speas were players that repeatedly cost the Red sox winning games.
So, yes these trade maneuvers were solid.
Now the Sox will find out who can handle the pressure in a tight playoff race and be a performer under playoff pressure. The players that do, you keep. The players who don't or can't, you move on from. Trust this process.

  • @mctaguer

Overall, feel about the same. I think getting the two relievers at the end made this "okay." Frankly, I expected less, especially once it became clear it was a seller's market. Pretty hard to imagine them getting any kind of clear difference maker without trading one of those top 5 guys, and I don't think that was worth it. I think Kristian Campbell made Yorke expendable.

    1) Bullpen help was needed coming out of the All Star Break.
    2) I would prefer a starter with bigger impact than Paxton (Fedde and even Eflin should not have been beyond reason)
    3) No middle of the order right hand bat. No issue picking up Jansen at catcher, but while he hits right hand it is not what we want.

I think it was a tough market but we came away with two relievers. I am in hopes that Sims and Garcia can help stabilize that bullpen. I loved your analogy Corbin !!! lol :) Here's hoping Priester can develop nicely. I kinda felt from the start unless we were willing to part with some of our top prospects we were not going to make a big splash. I did not think Breslow would part with the top prospects and I am glad he did not. I do think Nick Yorke will soon be ascending to the Pirates major league club. I think unless Priester develops well there maybe some regret on that one although we have a surplus at second base. I am pleased with Hamilton at second. San Diego came home with the relief pitching prize of the trading wars. However they paid very dearly with some of their best prospects for that one. I would not have wanted to pay that price! I grade this C/C+. We traded a gang of prospects away. They have to make Priester a win !!! Joe

My Jansen 2 cents: the Sox took a look at the Colorado brawl and moving on from Reece became a big priority. That issue was never going to go away, and always going to be a risk -- Reece clearly wasn't going to be able to get over his very, very (very) dumb mistake that he was lucky didn't cost him his whole career, but teams all around the league figured out he was clearly able to be raddled by taunts from it. So Breslow made a change for a catcher who was highly respected among players, had very solid D, is known for working well with pitchers, and will likely hit better at Fenway than in Toronto. In the context of that brawl, and all the teams around the league playing Michael Jackson's "Beat It" when Reece was up to bat, the Jansen trade was a good move. The team can't afford huge distractions on the field in a playoff hunt, especially if it had just been at the center of a brawl.

If you take out the Nick Yorke trade out because of Quinn Priester's potential development. The RS only gave about 7 million in prospects according to baseballtradevalues for Garcia+Paxton+Sims+Jansen. I agree that Paul Dejong should been included too, but you got your wish with Sogard getting an opportunity. Plus, the RS signed Montgomery to under the slot value! Shocking me! The only trade that appears bad is the Garcia trade, but Lugo wasn't worth a November roster spot. There are several DFA candidates on the RS 40-man roster: Bailey Horn+Dablec+Valdez+Brandon Walters+ Brad Keller+Mata+Isiah Campbell.+Trey Win.

Anyway, the Red Sox didn’t have any choices, they had to make moves to be taken seriously. We see what is going on since we’re back from the All Stars, it is easy to see that we are in trouble bullpen wise.

The Sox's window for serious WS contention is 2026-2030 when the next wave of top prospects is up. To improve the chances of a wild card spot, the front office possibly hurt that window slighlty by trading a couple players that might have been of use (Yorke and Portes) and some others that could instead have been trade bait for some useful future pieces. To really bolster the team (think Rooker, Crochet, Tanner Scott) in this sellers' market you would probably have had to trade some of the top prospects and really cripple the window. Personally I'm glad they didn't trade anything more. I'd rather have a serious shot at a couple of World Series in a few years than a wild card berth and a probable second- or third-round exit now.

I think it was a "C" average. Danny Jansen will be the surprise. I think he will do much better than people imagine. First I think he will be OK as a righty bat. 2nd I think he will make the pitchers better with his defensive skills.
I think if Quinn Priester can give you 120 innings next year with about a 4 ERA he is a success.
I do like the bullpen arms. They did not give up anything consenquental to get them. Hopefully when playoff time comes everyone is healthy. That is one strong bullpen is they can also get Martin, Hendricks and Slaten back.
I do believe the Sox need to go to a 6 man rotation with Criswell being the 6 man. I think the whole staff will benefit from an extra day off a week. Almost everyone has already passed their inning totals from last year.
I do not expect to see Teele, Anthony or Mayer up this year because none are rule 5 eligible. They will be given a chance to win the job in String training. I actually expect Teele to be first. The other 2 will be up by the end of July unless injuries.
Since the allstar break they lost so many games after the 7th inning. If they can stop that, they will be ok. With the additions I tihnk they will.
One more thing to watch for is players with expiring contracts being waived like the Angels did last year to get under the Luxury Tax. There could be a player worth taking that way. The Red Sox still have a lot of space before they get to the luxury tax

I'd have been happy to give up this entire cast of prospects, the players we received, plus the two DFA' guys Walter and Wingenter and the DFA pickup Johan Ramirez, for just one ace like Garrett Crochet or Blake Snell. If we had other needs, the minor leagues could've provided them. For example, backup catcher Jansen, we could've called up hot C/1B Mickey Gasper. The two relievers we got Sims and Garcia, if we only waited a week or two, we would have back Slaten and Martin. Even Priester was not immediately an upgrade. In a couple of weeks we should also be getting back Casas and Grissom or call up Meidroth to replace Jamie Westbrook. We talked about drafting best athlete, but the drafted mostly college arms that pitched poorly. I'm starting to long for the last GM. LOL

    • @forgottenpath5919
      @forgottenpath5919 2 місяці тому

I agree with you about Gasper. He's hitting everything in sight. I'm guessing they don't think his defense behind the dish is very good. You're assuming a lot about Slaten and Martin. They may or may not return at full strength. And a week or two is a long time when you're chasing a playoff berth. Can never have too many quality bullpen arms.

They improved however marginally as far as the prospects they gave up yes most were Rule V blocked and were not going to make an impact even Yorke was essentially blocked by someone who had 4 years of control left in Grissom and they like Meridoth at AAA. At the end I don’t what they acquired will get them to playoffs as Sea KC All got better. In terms of being a sellers market the only teams that overpaid were Baltimore & SD
But they got All Star frontline plyrs
While all plyrs are an improvement over what they had I had no expectation that they would go all in (cost of plyr and cost to acquire ) because ownership has not showed that for the last 4 years now.
(2018 was a year they went all in (Kinsler Eovaldi Pearce )
So my grade is not much different then yours but it’s a C / high C- with opportunity to become a B if Prieter is successful and D if Prieter is a Bust and they don’t make playoffs
