Doesn’t help that you get kidnapped to that area after a death which makes you think you did something wrong, and the fact that it’s the only time you really get background music in any area. Oh and the area itself is freaky as hell with zombie women ripping your eyes out to try to spare you from the horror ahead
Hail the Nightmare is freaky because it's the only environmental music of the whole game (well despite the HUB), because though you don't find the source, it's implied it's actually continuously sung by some people in the city you wander in. Depending where you are in the area, it's louder or quieter if I remember. And later, when everyone is apparently dead or morphed into hideous flesh-masses in the city, it's quiet.
It is called an intradiegetic media, meaning it is an actual part of the narration so it is actually sings by (here unseen) characters present in-game. And once translated, the Latin lyrics are foreshadowin (spoiler down) To sum up, when you hear the choir (of Mensis), they're in the middle of their ritual in the real world. When you kill Vacuous Rom and see the giant Blood Moon on the lake, it's like you've gone "through the other side of the mirror" because the School of Mensis succeded in dragging the place into the Great Ones Nightmare.
@@thisusernameis2long927Yes it does, it has this low ringing sounds that make it so horrific, the first time I went through it I was horrified. Hoping the next corner I turn wasnt one of those BrainSuckers.
Ludwig's theme is a masterpiece. He's a mad creature, a shambling mess of body parts with legs where there shouldn't be legs and FAR TOO MANY EYES. The music reflects his mental state, with the first half somewhat reminding me of trying to start a car with a dead battery, starting to build something but immediately dropping it and starting something else. In the second half the instrumentation cuts through the chaos and indecisiveness of the first half, gaining a LOT of energy but also a lot of structure.
Hail the Nightmare is pretty unsettling, because in-game it is not played as-is. It has a muffled effect that changes whether you're indoors or outdoors in the area it is played in. That makes it appear like it's coming from somewhere within the game and not just being used as ambiance
I don't think a OST has ever made me feel so eerie and uncomfortable as "Hail The Nightmare" did. The entire time I just wanted to get out of there! 😅 The atmosphere in this game is just incredible!
I've recently realised how the time signature says things with Luswig's soundtrack. In the accursed section its 4 beats for the soundtrack of just another beast to be slaughtered, but as soon as Ludwig gets the Holy Moonlight Sword and regains his self awareness it changes to 3 beats as if you fight him properly it can best be described as a waltz. A much more refined fight.
Great vid! Curious that there are so little area themes in the game and you mostly reacted to them. Can't wait to see you react to Laurence though! Also can't wait for you to listen to Extras, new character theme in Guilty Gear.
The first song plays in the only combat area in the game with a bgm, it's really foreboding when you arrive there. For context, songs play basically only on bosses, otherwise there is no bgm.
No, that's the Hunter's Refuge. Moonlit Melody is the song that plays when you first see Queen Yharnam after defeating Rom. In my opinion, it's one of the most unsettling tracks in the game because for as serene and meditative as it sounds, it plays as the blood moon rises, and the terrible situation in the city of Yharnam becomes even more dire. A lullaby to herald your darkest hour becoming even darker, as the sun sets for the last time, and the true *Nightmare* begins.
Ludwig perfectly encapsulates a fight against an enemy that you feel bad defeating, but you want him to have a glorious and honorable death at the same time. You’re even given a chance to lie to him after the fight and tell him that what he did mattered.
I was gonna say in the 3rd song the choir was singing in latin as a fun side note. Loved your reaction to this, please do more FromSoft game songs if you can youd be really surprised. It doesnt have to be bloodborne but they have great soundtracks too but Dark Souls series like Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring have one of the best soundtracks in gaming. I absolutely recommend checking some soundtracks out if you can thank you for this video 😊
Moonlit melody... the response in game to hearing this was very harrowing and sad with the diversion to how you thought the game was heading. You defeated an outer entity revealing...the truth. Your dream is a prison. There is no peace... that is this melody
The song “fist bump” is about the fact that without friends you won’t succeed and this song is completely opposed to the next song “infinite” this song is the main theme of the new antagonist, which says that even if you are with friends and have the courage to move mountains, but if you are yourself you have no idea why your friends need you
“Hail the Nightmare” is so scary and always creeps me out. This game has no music other than the “bosses” so the whole game you explore in silence with only the sound of the beasts and enemies. But the only place in the game where you hear an ambient music is when you wake up in cell after you were kidnapped and this music is suddenly the only thing you hear 😂 I literally stopped playing when i heard it shitting my pants i was searching for a safe place because it’s genuinely the scariest thing i've ever experienced in video games for a long time.
What I freaking love in this theme is how it shows Latin can sound as soul soothing as unfathomable wicked, it plays on both sacred and profane registers.
Can you believe that this soundtrack lost to Mario? Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was but I think it was 2015 or 2016. It's possible that this is because Witcher III came out at the same time. If Witcher had combat like Bloodborne? It would have been a 9/10 game.

ludwig's theme perfectly captures the vibe of a monster becoming a man again, to challenge you as an equal instead of as a beast to be hunted
Here are some of the best Bloodborne themes for you to react to:
Gehrman
Lady Maria
Living Failures
Father Gascoigne
Cleric Beast
Laurence
Living failures for sure!! That's one of my favorite ones!!
Darkbeast, bloodstarved beast, moon presence, Ebrietas, Micolash have to be in the conversation
@@lahunica2726 Nah, not on the same level as the others.
@@Al-ji4gd heavily disagree
Moon presence and one reborn sound dope too
Playing Bloodborne at 3 am alone and accidentally hearing hail the nightmare. That was happened to me. Scary af, mate

Cool to note that the first track is one of the very few times a song plays throughout a specific area in the game
This is the first video that reacts to Hail the nightmare!! Please continue to review the OST of fromsoftware often!
Istg this game has so many banger themes it’s crazy
I'm scared 🥲

If I remember correctly, Upper Cathedral Ward also has environmental music.

So glad you reacted to Bloodborne ost, it’s a masterpiece.
Laurence the first vicar is also a dark gothic master piece of a song. Thoroughly recommend.

The first part of ludwig is a fight of madness and attrition second part of the fight is more of a dance with macabre with for you no way to escape it

Lady Maria, Laurence, DarkBeast, Gehrman, Living failures, Ebrietas... Damn there are so many Good Arrangements in this game.
Dark best barl is masterpiece ❤
As someone who just started bloodborne i have to say it was ludwig who made me buy the game

It's a waltz from hell :)
As well the songs in Dark Souls 3 have latin too. Dark Souls 3 soundtracks have plenty that are as epic if not more than the 3rd song you reacted

The Grimm Troupe OST from Hollow Knight.
They arent all as scary. Just more like epic and some classical flaire.
