Waldemar's ability to tell a compelling story, and illustrate it with juicy anecdotes, is arguably unparalleled in the art-commentary world. Suddenly, 2-dimensional characters in the art world take on another, and intriguing dimension. I love it.
Yes Waldemar's excellent programs bring Art to life,... but what happened to the closed captioning? The video is on Holbein and yet his name is repeatedly close captioned as "Hine,".. Tudor becomes "Tuda",... etc etc. Does no intelligent person ever check the closed captioning? and if AI is so great that it can pass the Bar exam, I guess it has it's work cut out for it....
I love the way Waldemar literally walks the streets, opens the doors and invites us through places and paintings, pointing out mysteries and explaining symbolisms. Like how glass on a table's edge is a reminder that life is precarious and who knew a lizard was a symbol of old age!
I love the way, wherein you use the word "literally" and actually mean "literally" rather than "metaphorically" as so many other whose digital vocal likenesses Ihave heard.
waldemar is one of art history's most important creators and educators. His knowledge, personality, and breadth are unmatched. Truly one of the greatest gifts of light to art in what feels like a growing hour of darkness.
I have watched many of your videos on artists and their art on TV, where there is no 'thumbs up' or 'subscribed' icons. I started watching in January 2024 and now want to let you know of my many hours of delight and laughter at your no-holds-barred analyses and humor. Keep them coming! Luckily I have been to many of these places and taught in high school, so listening to your narrations is a big pleasure for an 86 year old. I give you a big kiss on your cheek.
Waldemar is simply the best at what he does. When I saw that this was going to be three hours I was elated. That's how compelling he is. We learn so much more than "just" about art. Indeed, the human condition remains the same regardless of which century. I will never tire of Waldemar, he could talk about plumbing or mothballs and I would be enthralled.
A fine trilogy, presented--as we all know--by the best. Life is enhanced by Waldemar's thorough assessments. Plus, now a whole lot more people know of Dobson, and why. Thank you thank you.
The artprograms with Waldemar are amongst my faouvorite times spendt. I am not even a big artknower at all, neither do i paint…and…yeah, I do, unfortuanally have very little knowlegde of art beforehand. I dont remember how i came across them - probably watching something about history, or some Kings and Queens, what are something i could have looked up. Now they are in a neat little folder, and I am so happy if i find one i havent watched earlier - otherwise i have no problem watching the sane ones over and over too. He is the best host! Its such a good time, and i feel so welcomed! Its such a pleasure walikng with Waldemar and enjoy all the beatiful, beautiful fantastic art! And all the stories! And how its told and showed! I totally love every little inch of those programs! ☺️☺️☺️ They give me a nice feeling that stays! I usually watch early in the morning, before i get bothered by anything or anyone, no telephone, no nothing, just me, coffee, cat and Waldemar and all the artist, his timemachine, and all the universes he is able to unlock and show. I havent enjoyed anything so totally and peacefully since i, once upon a time, a very long time when i was about eleven or twelve and first read «the lord of the ring» - not that the two are connectedin any other way, but the way I was and now are totally absorbed by both. 😀☺️ On top of all this - i also learn things - alot of things! Not just of arts - which are so interseting and fun! ❤️🤗 But on history, religion, big personalities and so much about human nature and about life it self! 🙂❤️🌟 Thank you, Thank you to Waldemar, for giving us such gems of some wonderfull videos! 🤗❤️🙂 All the best, and much love from Anlaug in Norway.
The history and symbolism behind the great art of history is fantastic. Waldemar is someone I'd enjoy taking a class from or just going to hear him lecture for an afternoon.
I wholeheartedly agree with the comments vis-a-vis Waldemar’s ability to tell a compelling story, etc .. he’s all of that and with a keen sense of humor! A delight to enjoy.
I love this guy. I have watched his vids multiple time to make sure I understanding all the complexity that he so cleverly reveals. And also how much he understand what we ( the viewers) are probably thinking. I hope he knows how much he is appreciated.
Waldy reminds me of one of those (very) few teachers you had in high school where it was actually fun to go to his class. You actually end up learning stuff, and almost feel guilty for enjoying school for a little while. Then later you wonder why most other teachers can't accomplish the same feat. Waldy makes it look so easy. But it ain't.
As for Dobson, it may not be so important that history has been unkind to him but that he was compelled to record his times in such intimate fashion and great honesty, regardless, that will keep him in good stead for those who appreciate an uncomplicated Englishman's virtues.
Waldemar, you make the study of art so much fun! Thank you for these lessons, and thank goodness for YT, I can watch them repeatedly to get all the juice out of them.
In Waldemar's "fragmentary remains of a shadowy lute player," in the background of Dobson's Unknown Musician, I think first of all he's describing me, and probably quoting Robert Graves. Thank you once again, Waldemar, for all your marvelous scholarship.
I love you Waldemar , I can listen to you for hours and never get bored. You are a brilliant educator, you have a gift for communicating. But, don't you think that the main reason we all remember old KHVIII and his "damned wives" is that he publicly executed TWO (out of SIX ) of them? And, maybe Hans had such a great time Chez Moore precisely because he was a Catholic painter, and not a heretic Priest who translated the bible from latin to English so the common people could read it for themselves. I do have a new appreciation for the beauty of Holbein's portraiture thanks to this video. I have not ventured to the Frick in years but I will be paying a visit in the near future. Thank you for your wonderful videos, I hope you do more of them. The world needs to appreciate art more (maybe it will deter bombing the hell out of the planet) and you do such a great job.
Waldemar Januszczak is spot on when he calls Holbein's sketches of More's family 'astonishingly vivid'. The sketch of More's son, John, in a quiet, contemplative pose, at 15:25 enthralled me. A complete stranger from all those years ago, suddenly alive in my living room in 2024. How little he knew that all these years later he would be viewed by hundreds of thousands of people on UA-cam.
"Perspective" offers an unparalleled arts channel, showcasing a global array of art. It provides insightful and informative content, featuring a rich tapestry of colors, depths, and a historical expanse covering centuries of artistry. Waldemar excels as a storyteller, blending humor with realism to reveal the art and true lives of the individuals behind the world's most renowned and obscure artworks. Thank you.
Fascinating video! Loved all of the quotes that Waldemar ripped out re Rubens, yes he's had his critics over the years. Regarding Dobson, didn't know of this artist before, his work is really excellent.
I agree with Waldemar's assessment of Cromwell. He was abominable. Thomas Moore was a victim of both Cromwell and Henry VIII. The first time I visited the Alte Pinakothek and was confronted with a wall of Rubens I was disgusted. As I grew older and learned more...I understood him to be an amazing artist. (Much of that is due to Waldemore's brilliant lessons.) Additionally, there are so very many different artists and incredible styles it's difficult, or impossible, to choose a favorite. Just like I cannot choose a favorite author.
I am an American over 67 years old with a strong background. I greatly desire to understand a British phrase that I assume is not simply due to habit. What does the phrase "delightfully British soup song" mean in 17th-century England? I enjoyed watching your great video "The Royal Artists: Waldemar's Deep Dive On Holbein, Rubens & Dobson | Perspective." I truly enjoyed it. It touched on a multitude of things I am very interested in. Art, history, and the monarchy. Thank You!?., Please help me understand so that the story will be more complete.
Ruthless and bloodthirsty times. There are those that clearly want to return us there, sadly. As of Nov 2023, in some parts of the world, this has already happened. Let's hope that beautiful history lessons like this, can make to consider how becoming evangelical about "good guys and bad guys" can help us to avoid such a fundamental human error.
Hi Waldemar. Another brilliant documentary!! Well done! You’re a star! I am now at the 3rd time of watching all your documentaries on UA-cam so please keep producing new ones! I am just back from the Louvre in Abu Dhabi and was good but nothing like the real Louvre, so you might do a documentary there and give your expert opinion! Thanks for many hours of great entertainment and education! Are you doing any lectures?
Very good decision, learning from the Past how to improve our lives in the future, let's invite everybody get inspired, let's explore the best tips all over again, genius artists are just...genius🎉❤🎉
Interesting fact about Holbein, that I did not know, he also designed the jewelry and daggers that the royalty used. So all the accoutrements that Henry and his wives are wearing is designed by Holbein. (Except Anne's B-she came to the marriage with that piece of jewelry) Pretty cool!
Henry sent a letter to (I think it was) parents of Mary of Guise, asking for her, and stating that he liked her height. Maybe I saw it reproduced in the LOC. He was rejected.
I liked Sister Wendy. She was passionate, knowledgable, and inciteful. Not only that but she was very keen to share her passion. I haven't seen anyone to match that, however knowledgeable. Certainly this is interesting, but still, I'm sorry, I don't see that joy.
Waldemar's ability to tell a compelling story, and illustrate it with juicy anecdotes, is arguably unparalleled in the art-commentary world. Suddenly, 2-dimensional characters in the art world take on another, and intriguing dimension. I love it.
Perfectly expressed!

I say that to myself as I watch all of his stuff.
100% agree. love this shit !
I fully enjoy his commentary and narration, it is truly wonderful.
I love when he talks over his shoulder like we are both there. It’s subtle but it brings you in. He’s excellent.
I love the way Waldemar literally walks the streets, opens the doors and invites us through places and paintings, pointing out mysteries and explaining symbolisms. Like how glass on a table's edge is a reminder that life is precarious and who knew a lizard was a symbol of old age!

Nobody does art better than Waldemar!
What are the names of his writers?
"art better than Waldemar" -- who is comparing art to Waldemar?
Nobody does [talking about] art better than does Waldemar.
FR!
@@MoivinSulunker You mean 'who'. I've been following him for years. This is him. And any production has a team don't you know? 😊😊

Thank you Waldemar and team for these unparalleled films. Vivid depth and contextualization bring these artists' achievements to life.
Waldemar a great art historian and captivating teacher. The video quality and direction of these art travelogues is extraordinary as well.

Nobody like Waldemar! What character, what a mind and eye!
This is just wonderful. I thought I knew something about Holbein--I was wrong. Looking forward to watching the next 2 parts.
This was educational and pleasant. What a great presenter!
Great documentary. Waldemar really tells it in a comprehensible and interesting way. 👍
Yay for long art docus narrated by Waldemar!!!🎉

Those paintings of Henry VIII are truly impressive. Holbein was definitely a master painter.
I learned SO MUCH from this fascinating set of documentaries! Thanks!
So good to see your work again Waldemar. 😊

You know Dobson really nailed little Charles II's true face since the resemblance to his grandmother Marie de Medici's portraits is so clear.
Waldemar shall go down as one of the greats.
there is so much whereat to be looked.

No
Shame. I would love to see some new content, but am also enjoying things like this, from 2010.
Can you all talk about the Artists and not about Waldemar? Holbein is a genius quite unmatched.
Waldemar already said it all.
Holbein, the Art History Narrative is a perfection, as were the Paintings. ✨😊

The distorted skull is GENIUS
Thanks for posting
Between 248 and 292 A.D. the pale horseman rode forth, and the roman empire crumbled into the most dreadful state of disorder and chaos.
It was the squinting eyes that told me it was Henry VIII.
I initially said Henry VII.
rules get to be broken.
War not so much "erupted" as "was fomented by agents of families who came out of Venice"?
You're right about Holbein getting Sir Thomas More right.
Thank you for the truth and saying that Cromwell was a louse - a Himmler of his time
