- "At least some of the Russian soldiers repented or asked for forgiveness because they realised just how much nonsense they've been fed. At the same point they didn't stop doing what they were doing, but there was some element of recognition."
Russia will have to come to terms with war crimes committed by its military as liberated Ukrainians begin to talk of war crimes and which soldiers in Putin's ranks were more or less humane, says Dr Jade McGlynn a research fellow from the Department of War Studies at Kings College London.

This is the best interview on the Russian mindset I've seen in years. Dr. McGlynn's point about Russia's contempt for the West is spot on. Excellent questions as ever from Kate Gerbeau. Bravo.
Also did you spot how Kate stopped glancing at her prep sheet and just got totally involved in Dr McGlynn's dialogue, from about 18 minutes on, asking questions that followed on? Great natural journalism, eliciting even more clear knowledge from a great mind.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I did. I’ve seen her do that in some other interviews. She’s hands down the best of the Times Radio presenters in my opinion. The contempt is not from the Russian side... I've been trying to educate westerners on this. In Russia there is no such thing as a fair bargain. No such thing as a fair contract. The only fair contract, or bargain, is one achieved when you have leverage on somebody else. There is no such concept as fair play. It's all about who has leverage, who has strength and power over somebody else. This goes down all the way into and includes personal relationships. Obviously there are individuals who are not this way, but understand this, it is so prevalent within the culture, and violence is also prevalent within the culture, so much so, that the individuals who are not this way are the exception not the rule
Well said .....the west is so used to fairness and negotiation they can't imagine a life without it.

Following Bretton Woods and WW2, USA proposed globalisation as a development to end the need for empire building in order to get resources. Trade using oceans free of pirates and ongoing wars. The US navy would keep the oceans open to trade, because of this China in particular had the chance to grow based on world trade, importing raw materials and exporting products.

I was in the liberated territories in eastern Ukraine last year and also talked to the people who were there. My first observation is that there were hardly any young people at all, whole towns almost completely depopulated. The question I asked always was why did you not leave and the answer was always the same - where to and how would I pay for it and this is my home. The only person I have ever spoken to who had anything remotely positive to say about the enemy was one person in Bucha and that was in May of last year who said that an officer had warned them in a caring way to get out before the really nasty people turned up.

Just an amazing interview with a strong sense of realism. Unquestionably the best bit of analysis I have seen in a long time. There is so much I want to write about this, alas, no time!
Interesting points about Russia's nationalist narrative. I was teaching English to Russians in UK about 6 years ago, and May 9th came around. The date was a really big deal to my (adult) students, and they all shook my hand and went around the school shaking everybody's hands and thanking us for being on the right side of history. They were surprised that we had no celebration here. By way of explanation I put on my cheap Little Englander hat and said that if we celebrated every war we'd won then life in the UK would be one long party. But yes we remember history and they should stay well away from Salisbury, despite the obvious attraction of that city's beautiful cathedral.
Look in the mirror
We only learn about the wars we won. There are no statues erected to celebrate defeats.
What’s so bad about Salisbury? I’m not from the UK so am genuinely curious.
The victory in WW2 which ended this war is much more important than other wars. Russia really suffered in the second world war, they sacrificed much more than any other nation. So why are you surprised they are celebrating the end of the war? England went through nothing similar.
@@tw25rw I believe there's a statue of George Washington in Trafalgar Square. He led the American War of Independence, which Britain lost, I'm surprised you didn't learn that.

Blamed for the defeat, not for the war.
Great program, thanks. Here in the US we usually don't get any real insight of the war on the ground, let alone scholarly discussion of history and active research, mostly just opinion pieces or an over-emphasis on the warfighting/weapons. We need to understand the war from multiple perspectives and its broader background, the psychologies of the Russians vs. Ukrainians, the roots and use of propaganda, etc. This takes the veil off in a lot of ways.
Right! Russia deserves disintegration into its captive nationalities. Send ethnic Russians to the front!
Russia doesnt have a huge nuclear arsenal, whenever someone says that you know they understand very little. Just think about this logically for a second.
The drain of resources due to corruption in Russia is staggering, we've seen very basic military equipment missing for front line soldiers.
Now you're telling me that a nuclear weapon that costs approximately one million dollars a year each, and are never meant to actually be used have been perfectly maintained and ready for deployment?
hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
They were sold for yachts on day 1 dude. f off with that.
Another reason to believe your statement is right is that, USA spends around 50-55 mio dollars on maintenance only on their nukes while Russian military spending - at least until this full scale invasion started - was approximately (estimated) equivalent to be around 70-75 mio dollars for the whole thing.
Doesn't really leave a lot of funding for maintenance for 6000 nuclear weapons.
@@oneshothunter9877Ok, so they don’t have 6k nuclear weapons, but even 100 is enough to trigger an apocalypse when you factor in the West response.
The numbers of nuclear weapons have only old but they have not been updated and they were not built very well, but it would be extremely unlikely that they will ever want WWIII.
