  • "Russia is burning through some of the most experienced troops that they have remaining after the ground forces have been decimated by the earlier months of fighting."

Very good interview. I wish to add that for Europe and other neighbouring countries it is not only important to increase the production of weapons, but also to decarbonize our energy infrastructure. Such, we could avoid being dependent on and pumping billion after billion into Russia. Once a new decarbonized energy infrastructure would be established in the Western world, we swiftly should offer it to the other countries. It would be a project of tens of years, but it would greatly hamper Russias efforts to rebuild it's military.

Russian troops are going AWOL at alarming rates. Putin is begging third world country North Korea for weapons, ammunition and personnel. Pilots are defecting with helicopters to Ukraine. Yevgeny Prigozhin and Kadrov are no longer in the fight. Prigozhin is dead and Kadrov is on his death bed. A coup against Putin was almost successful with little to no resistance. Russian generals have been killed in alarming numbers. Russia can't fly in Ukraine and their ships can't navigate the Black Sea for fear of being sunk. Their most elite ship was sunk already. Their elite airborne unit was decimated. Everytime a mobilization is mentioned thousands of Russian military aged men flee the country in mass. Russian soldiers are calling the surrender hotline in such numbers Ukraine is having trouble receiving the surrenders. Russia can no longer take offensive rolls and has retreated to simply defensive positions and even those defensive positions are crumbling and yet you say Ukraine is losing.

Absolutely. We're learning what works and what needs more R&D or total funding redirection. All old ammo is being replaced with new over time. Getting rid of older weapons units, hardly touching the best stocks. And once this war is done, Russia will be very badly weakened, which is a huge plus for NATO.

@@lauchlanguddy1004 The prospect of crossing 180 km of ocean to attack a well-prepared defense looks like suicide, more so now than any time in the last 60 years. The costs of making accurate missile attacks from land against ships looks cheaper than ever. The costs of building a flotilla of interwoven AA defenses that can prevent such attacks looks more expensive than ever, especially if they need to be floated all the way to Taiwan's shores.
I suspect that some Chinese generals were fantasizing an invasion of Taiwan would be plausible in 15-20 years, and now they will look like idiots if they do not admit that is impossible.
But, to be fair, the Chinese are not spending more than roughly 2% of its GDP on defense, which is not an unreasonable expenditure. However the lessons learned from Ukraine makes it seem that a comfortable 2% may never be enough to conquer Taiwan. It would take an increased investment over decades.

Giles makes some good points. One in particular was that Crimea will be hard to defend from either side. Another was that the war even after Russia is removed from Ukraine could continue for Russia in sending missiles and drones into Ukraine could continue for a very long time. On the other hand he suggested that the West was comparable to Russia in its supply of defenses for Ukraine, but I doubt that in that the West is economically 20 times the size of Russia and given the sanctions on Russia we will see that the West can continue to supply Ukraine while Russia falters in around two years.

Financially Ruzzia will be flat lining in 2025, as far as military resources it will be effectively out in 2026 should it stagger along that far. This assuming China does not fully fund and supply it's newest acquisition - or just moves into areas it wishes to possess again and Ruzzia cannot do a thing to stop it... Full financial collapse will visit enormous internal strife on the federation so post 2025 things become utterly unpredictable - who will control what munitions or weapons, and who they may be used on internally or otherwise will be the question...

One more very important “wake-up-call” is how Elon Musk and some other private companies act. Things concerning the safety of a country, simply shouldn’t lie in the hands of jerks like Musk. If you don’t support Putler, then simply don’t buy a Tesla… When private companies act against our own safety, against democracy, then we certainly get a “wake-up-call” on what we have created. No one minds private companies, but they shouldn’t act in all spheres and certainly not in spheres concerning safety of democratic states.

I disagree. The US has started ramping up its production of weapons it is sending to Ukraine. Especially artillery shells, tubes and shoulder launched AA and anti-tank rockets. Improved models too since there would be no reason to build old models for restocking stored ammo that is being sent to Ukraine. Other nations are doing the same.

Excellent and informative. There are some points that I have not heard anyone address:
For the sake of discussion - supposing Russia was able to fully occupy Ukraine they would be faced by unrelenting and savage partisan resistance that would make Afghanistan look like a cake walk. Has Putin failed to learn the lessons of history? Ukraine cannot be held.
Poland seems to be inclined to get involved in the event of an unfavourable turn of events. How might this play out? It occurs to me that Polish forces could occupy the Ukrainian land to the north of the E373, thus creating a cordon sanitaire against invasion from Belarus whilst not engaging directly with Russian forces and freeing Ukrainian forces for redeployment elsewhere. Or would this directly precipitate WW3?
How are we to understand the talk amongst some European and other leaders in favour of territorial compromise?
Given what the USSR did to Hungary (1956) and Slovakia - why is there any Russophile sentiment in those countries?

He goes into long and technical explanations of Russia's poor performance on the battlefield and yet the answer is so simple and obvious. Corruption is at the route cause and it is corruption from the top down that erodes the ability to not only preform but more insidiously it crushes moral, hence all the posts we see about not being paid, fed, equipped properly and lied to. With that background, even when they do get into the fight they dont have the equipment, training or the will to fight.
