- "Russia is burning through some of the most experienced troops that they have remaining after the ground forces have been decimated by the earlier months of fighting."
Putin appears to have backed into a corner on defending Crimea as he is unable to respond to Ukrainian attacks on the peninsula says Ker Giles.

Sharp questions, love this woman's interviews!
I like her hair style
The questions were neither sharp nor particularly well considered. Overall, the interview was too short and ended rather abruptly.
Keir Giles stands out as a very eloquent and thoughtful person.

One of the best interviews I watched on this war, alongside Bill Browder in my opinion. Thanks 😊

He said the Putin stop threat or mention nukes attack
Only because China told him to stop you think it’s true?
Sensible , articulate and convincing presentation done so well it appeared to be read from a script. Great work
Another excellent journalism piece of work.
Excellent interview - Kier Giles allways direct to the point
The securing of the naval base in Sevastopol was - I guess - the driving motive of the 2014 occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol. The stuff about ethnic Russians being persecuted in the Donbass is just smoke.
The Russians need to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.
Eventually they had to admit the only way to do that was to incorporate the Donbas (and probably Odessa and Kharkiv) into Russia.
Well said.
More than just smoke, the situation was fabricated by the Kremlin and his little green men. All Kremlin BS.
All the young people in the world want are more freedoms more opportunities and better paying jobs and in a very short time all the old men trying to play God will be gone, then it repeats itself

Very good interview. I wish to add that for Europe and other neighbouring countries it is not only important to increase the production of weapons, but also to decarbonize our energy infrastructure. Such, we could avoid being dependent on and pumping billion after billion into Russia. Once a new decarbonized energy infrastructure would be established in the Western world, we swiftly should offer it to the other countries. It would be a project of tens of years, but it would greatly hamper Russias efforts to rebuild it's military.

Great interview . Feel very sorry for average Joe in Russia . Years of misery under ever growing dictatorship. Only employment to look forward to, as evidenced on here, is perhaps a job as a troll or bot operator
Or as 🌻 fertilizer.
Ironically, the advent of sea-based drones and the use of smart long-range munitions by UKR is undercutting the supposed value of having Sevastopol as a military port. The Black Sea fleet is looking more and more like fish in a bathtub.
Yes, the future will be one in which battleships in the Black Sea will be only in history books!!!
*Do you mean "dead fish"?*
Russia doesn't know how to defend against it, yet. Change in tactics and defense weapons may help Russia, though I hope not
Ukraine is not attacking the Russian fleet, it's NATO who is doing all of that (undercover), Ukraine doesn't have the capabilities, it is done with Western weapons, intelligence, NATO officers and soldiers operating them. If they tell you anything different, they are lying to you.
It is also untrue to say (as commentators often lazily do) that Russia wants Crimea as a warm water base. They have their own Russian base only a few miles away on the north eastern coast of the Black Sea.
When Kate flashes those dark eyes I just melt.😍🥰 What an absolutely super person, in every way.

Most excellent. Very insightful.
Yes, Sevastopol was hit pretty hard, and no nuclear rhetoric. The submarine and landing ship were legitimate targets and they won't sail again. That was a very impressive operation.
Terrific interview as usual. Hope some of the politicians are listening.

Go Ukraine Go, May God be with them (all Ukrainians) in their fight for FREEDOM
They fight for a freedom to be UkraNazi and to be Anti-Russian. And they are expecting to get hansome monetary rewards for doing that.
Refreshing to hear such a frank and realistic perspective of Russian policy and behaviour which had largely been ignored by the West Hoping that Ukraine will now become a Nato member as their only security against any ongoing future attacks after the Ukrainian victory .
Ukrainian victory?. Zelensky were in the US asking for more weapon. in his own word "Ukraine are dying". he fires his own minister. the defeated is inevitable. and here you still think they gonna win?. Zelensky really really needs what you were smoking.
Russian troops are going AWOL at alarming rates. Putin is begging third world country North Korea for weapons, ammunition and personnel. Pilots are defecting with helicopters to Ukraine. Yevgeny Prigozhin and Kadrov are no longer in the fight. Prigozhin is dead and Kadrov is on his death bed. A coup against Putin was almost successful with little to no resistance. Russian generals have been killed in alarming numbers. Russia can't fly in Ukraine and their ships can't navigate the Black Sea for fear of being sunk. Their most elite ship was sunk already. Their elite airborne unit was decimated. Everytime a mobilization is mentioned thousands of Russian military aged men flee the country in mass. Russian soldiers are calling the surrender hotline in such numbers Ukraine is having trouble receiving the surrenders. Russia can no longer take offensive rolls and has retreated to simply defensive positions and even those defensive positions are crumbling and yet you say Ukraine is losing.
It would be a disaster! The West needs to give up this goal of controlling/dominating the globe.
@@travisstryder216Putin is asking Kim for weapons. Personally I would rather be asking the US than North Korea. So by your comment Russia could be seen as losing because they are asking for help too.

China isn’t watching the west get weakened - this guy clearly doesn’t understand combat arms. The experience being gained and insight to innovation places western military far ahead of China
China has never fought a war and is now terrified it will look like a Keystone cops movie if it ever did. Tofu army. I am laughing so hard
Absolutely. We're learning what works and what needs more R&D or total funding redirection. All old ammo is being replaced with new over time. Getting rid of older weapons units, hardly touching the best stocks. And once this war is done, Russia will be very badly weakened, which is a huge plus for NATO.
@@lauchlanguddy1004 The prospect of crossing 180 km of ocean to attack a well-prepared defense looks like suicide, more so now than any time in the last 60 years. The costs of making accurate missile attacks from land against ships looks cheaper than ever. The costs of building a flotilla of interwoven AA defenses that can prevent such attacks looks more expensive than ever, especially if they need to be floated all the way to Taiwan's shores.
I suspect that some Chinese generals were fantasizing an invasion of Taiwan would be plausible in 15-20 years, and now they will look like idiots if they do not admit that is impossible.
But, to be fair, the Chinese are not spending more than roughly 2% of its GDP on defense, which is not an unreasonable expenditure. However the lessons learned from Ukraine makes it seem that a comfortable 2% may never be enough to conquer Taiwan. It would take an increased investment over decades.
What Crimea (and to a lesser extent Bahkmut) represents is Putin's credibility in Russia.
This sentence is worth repeating; "Wherever Russia can reach it touches lives in a terrible way", which is so true. What good have Russia done for the world. Is it like leaving ruined allies behind once their usefulness no longer is of need? How is it even possible to trust their word

“The old days…when Russia mattered for something else than simply committing genocide”
THAT PART 👆🏻Russia’s future is BLEAK.
Deservedly so.
Now russia is nothing more than a joke army to the entire world😂
Giles makes some good points. One in particular was that Crimea will be hard to defend from either side. Another was that the war even after Russia is removed from Ukraine could continue for Russia in sending missiles and drones into Ukraine could continue for a very long time. On the other hand he suggested that the West was comparable to Russia in its supply of defenses for Ukraine, but I doubt that in that the West is economically 20 times the size of Russia and given the sanctions on Russia we will see that the West can continue to supply Ukraine while Russia falters in around two years.
True
Financially Ruzzia will be flat lining in 2025, as far as military resources it will be effectively out in 2026 should it stagger along that far. This assuming China does not fully fund and supply it's newest acquisition - or just moves into areas it wishes to possess again and Ruzzia cannot do a thing to stop it... Full financial collapse will visit enormous internal strife on the federation so post 2025 things become utterly unpredictable - who will control what munitions or weapons, and who they may be used on internally or otherwise will be the question...
His last statement is really powerful.
Excellent interview! Thank you.
Allowing Putin to keep Crimea will be like letting the bank robber keep the cash after robbing the bank and avoid being sent to prison.
Right on! It is like a kind of Imperialism! No to foreign wars! I mean for Russians, no foreign wars. Others fine.
Politics is about practicalities, not morality, I get the feeling a lot of governments want to end the war and get back to generating power in other ways
Do you think Netanyahu should be allowed to keep the West Bank and East Jerusalem?

One more very important “wake-up-call” is how Elon Musk and some other private companies act. Things concerning the safety of a country, simply shouldn’t lie in the hands of jerks like Musk. If you don’t support Putler, then simply don’t buy a Tesla… When private companies act against our own safety, against democracy, then we certainly get a “wake-up-call” on what we have created. No one minds private companies, but they shouldn’t act in all spheres and certainly not in spheres concerning safety of democratic states.
I disagree. The US has started ramping up its production of weapons it is sending to Ukraine. Especially artillery shells, tubes and shoulder launched AA and anti-tank rockets. Improved models too since there would be no reason to build old models for restocking stored ammo that is being sent to Ukraine. Other nations are doing the same.
As a western taxpayer, I demand that my taxes sto being wasted on useless politically motivated projects and ramp up weapons and ammo production. Ukrainians need and deserve our help. Let's end this war with a total Ukrainian victory, and ruZZian demilitarization.

Endlich mal jemand der Russland richtig einschätzt.
Finally someone who correctly assesses Russia.
Keir Giles' analyses are excellent.
Excellent and informative. There are some points that I have not heard anyone address:
For the sake of discussion - supposing Russia was able to fully occupy Ukraine they would be faced by unrelenting and savage partisan resistance that would make Afghanistan look like a cake walk. Has Putin failed to learn the lessons of history? Ukraine cannot be held.
Poland seems to be inclined to get involved in the event of an unfavourable turn of events. How might this play out? It occurs to me that Polish forces could occupy the Ukrainian land to the north of the E373, thus creating a cordon sanitaire against invasion from Belarus whilst not engaging directly with Russian forces and freeing Ukrainian forces for redeployment elsewhere. Or would this directly precipitate WW3?
How are we to understand the talk amongst some European and other leaders in favour of territorial compromise?
Given what the USSR did to Hungary (1956) and Slovakia - why is there any Russophile sentiment in those countries?
China recently resusitated its demand for the return of the Primorski Kray or northern Manchuria which includes Vladivostok, on a State issued map. Russia grabbed that territory in the 19th century, later than UK taking Hong Kong. Does China have plans to take Siberia?
He goes into long and technical explanations of Russia's poor performance on the battlefield and yet the answer is so simple and obvious. Corruption is at the route cause and it is corruption from the top down that erodes the ability to not only preform but more insidiously it crushes moral, hence all the posts we see about not being paid, fed, equipped properly and lied to. With that background, even when they do get into the fight they dont have the equipment, training or the will to fight.
