I’m playing Martha for our Ccd all saints party. Not by accident as I am learning to find gods Rhythm for my life. Such a struggle as a mother to find the Martha Mary balance! Holy Spirit made it clear to me in your entry ….. Mary morning Martha day…. I have been struggling to give my holy hour in the am cause I’m so exhausted from my Marthaing all day…. I share your struggle; trying to find God’s rhythm in my life now that I began something new by actively serving my church community. I just got convicted by the Holy Spirit because I am neglecting my intimate time to be with Jesus by letting myself get distracted while I serve Jesus. Praying to the Holy Spirit to intercede in our behalf and help us (you and me) be a Mary in a Martha world. 🙏💕

Thank you!!! Your study is the 1st I've seen that supports what I believe to be true in regard to Martha - that these are two separate scenarios of Mary sitting at Jesus' feet and Martha serving. The first scene in Luke 11 seems to be early in Christ's ministry, while the second scene in John 12 appears to be at the beginning of the Passion week. Most commentators focus on Mary's devotion as better than Martha's serving. Yet we see the development of Martha's faith as she grows to understand serving from a healthy soul, living out her spiritual giftedness with love toward her Lord and in shalom. I love this!!!
Two women stand in the presence of the creator of the Universe. One sister is so overwhelmed she wants to ask Jesus every question under the sun and worship him. The other wants to make the perfect meal and serve it to him. But the question here is, does that perfect meal show Martha's pride in her abilities and not enough interest in the Word and it's very presence in front of her ? I know as every human being does that the pride of humans in their own abilities can overwhelm us. Trying to make us the center of attention.
Luke 10:43 "And Martha said unto Mary, 'Leave him and help me now, sister.' And Mary did so. Jesus waited patiently for his hostesses until they were ready to serve. And Martha and Mary taught humankind a new way to live."
