As an Australian, I've never understood the "anti-ranked choice" that America has such a hardon for. Like, it makes 0 sense how if you vote for a third party you're throwing your vote away, and the fact that you just have to vote for the lesser of two evils. Like, hey maybe you should be allowed to vote for whoever you want without the fear of your vote going to waste.

A good chunk of the population is doing that, mainly in local elections, because why not. The federal elections mostly feel like a dog and pony show since federal politics functions as a pure oligarchy and ignores the general population most of the time.

You're painting with a broad brush honestly. Throwing around broad statements like "America has a hard on for this." is just reductive. As can be seen in many points of the video, there are a lot of things that the majority of american's don't like but the form that voting takes doesn't represent that. Its not a matter of just "Not having a hard on" For something. Its that very powerful people with a lot of money spend that money to maintain what is currently happening. The Holier than though attitude of "As an Australian" is annoying.

It's called "we have a First Past the Post system" and it's literal mathematics that any party that can't get a plurality of the vote literally cannot hope to win. Further, since zero of the third parties have an apparatus for significant Senate and House wins, even if they somehow beat the odds on winning the White House they'd still have to contend with a Congress primarily made up of Republicans and Democrats. It's a lot more complicated than "having a hardon" for anything.
Aside that "still has to contend with Congress" is why people sound stupid when they act like Bernie or Stein or West or so on would be some magic cure, as nope, they'd have to contend with the exact same Congressional issues that Biden deals with. And obviously if Republicans don't want to compromise with moderate Dems I don't know why certain groups think they're suddenly going to fall over themselves being nice to any president who's even more leftist.

Remember, America is basically the beta test for how Democracy would be built in the modern age. When the founders wrote the Constitution, they didn't foresee parties at all - they assumed that individual ambition would enforce the various checks and balances. Australia has been a country with its own government for what, like 100 years? I would expect that the first group to do something would be rougher than the ones that followed, since they have the benefit of experience.

If you're in favor of more leftist policies which I am, and you seem to be. I would rethink about considering the democrats to be your "enemy." Gaining political prominence requires coalition building, working to form a group that can enact change in at least directions you can support.
Trying to go it alone and make enemy of your closest powerful poltical block isn't how you succeed.
Just look at the facists, they didn't make enemies with the gop, they worked with them and became louder and more Influential within that political block, to where there are their most powerful in recent history. You don't get there by just making enemies from potential allies.
I'm seeing a growing trend in our poltical block of demanding pure conformance to your given ideals at the threat of breaking up the coalition and allowing the antithesis of our goals to take power because of it. It's just the wrong way to go about this frankly.

First off, nobody should be voting just to keep somebody out of office because inevitably they will make a populist decision in doing so and we'll be stuck with a boring candidate who will maintain the status quo or let the status quo continue to slip into a bad place. Are there good candidates (better than Biden)? Yes, there are. Do they stand a chance? Nope. Are they even that much better than Biden? No. When I use the word better, what I mean is, will that person fight to make the lives of other humans, the ones who need the most help, better. I don't see these candidates doing that. Plus with only 435 reps for 330 million people they will easily be captured by money, or at least enough of them to make anything meaningful not happen.
When the current number of Reps was locked in, it was 1 rep for every 250,000 people. Now its one for every 800,000. Almost nobody knows their rep anymore. We used to as a country. If I understand the French system right, instead of Primary elections where everyone in the country gets to have a voice, instead a potential candidate needs to get 500 already elected officials to sponsor them in order to appear on the ballot. I don't see how delegating the nomination to random city councilmen and mayors is more democratic than the entire voting population participating in the process.

"Ranked choice voting is complicated and people won't understand it" is a common strategy of people who benefit from FPTP to reduce support for better systems - their argument is that we're too stupid to understand it.
Alternative Vote is very simple. You rank your candidates by preference, then you look at how many 1st place votes everyone got. If nobody has over 50% you take whoever got the fewest votes, and cross them off all the paperwork, then check again. Repeat until someone has over 50%.

Oh hey! Early voting just started here. We have almost ten candidates although realistically three have potential chances of winning. And I can't believe in saying this but, I could live and be totally okay with any of these 9 winning. They're all professor, well behaved, and all of them have some tiny quirk or stain in their past that balances out. I'm actually excited for the first time about presidential election in Finland.

The reason for not doing that is because it can become an increasingly arbitrary grouping that also may be inadequate to the task at hand.
E.g - if the issue is cognitive capacity, that is something that can vary wildly with nothing to do with age. Then if you try controlling based on cognitive capacity you can fall into the biases of such tests. Tests that on an individual basis are frequently about learning to pass them, rather than actually proving anything.
The hope I feel is that the party you vote for should not be selecting someone with no capacity for the job. That then is an interior system issue rather than a laws issue. Which is in the end a big part what the drive of this video is about - more robust processes to ensure fair democracy generally.
