Mexicola Grande avocado, sadly it’s time to bid a fond farewell to my grafted named variety 😥

  • Despite my best efforts to save it, the scion has now completely died back to the rootstock on what was my Mexicola Grande.
Maybe the rootstock will survive in which case I should one day be able to graft back onto it 🤞

IMO, having healthy roots/irrigation / soil draining is most important thing for avocado recovering from fresh graft

Agreed Jeff, although it was already too far gone to be able to revive the roots in time to save the grafted section. It’s always the grafts that die back first 😥

Sorry to see your Mexicola Grande not make it Brett 😢 You’ve tried your best to keep it from dying back, but as you know there can be several factors why it declined. As you mentioned the initial graft wasn’t the best and maybe the roots were compromised at the start. Hopefully another Mexicola Grande may come you way in the future 🙌🏾

Frustrating Joe but avocados can at times be very cantankerous lol, and this was one of them. I guess to be honest I don't really need another one as I have 3 grafted avocados still if they survive and lets be honest, as all these trees grow where on earth will I fit them 😂😂

Very sorry to see that the Mexicola Grande scion has died, Brett 😢
The exact same thing happened with my bacon, died back all the way to the rootstock 😢

Unfortunately it’s well and truly croaked 😥. Hopefully I can keep my other grafted avocados going. Did your bacon rootstock survive, I can’t remember ?

@@lyonheart84 it was still alive last week, the Reed bud grafts I added to it were still green too, although the growth had stalled, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t continue to die back 😢

@PeterEntwistle it’s seriously warm today, hopefully things won’t cook in your greenhouse 😱. Did you manage to visit any garden centres to see what they sell ?

@@lyonheart84 I know, I’ve been very worried about how warm it’s been while I’ve been away. That greenhouse only has some small vents at the side, not on the roof, where they need to be 😬. I left those open, but had to leave the door zipped up as I didn’t want wind getting in there and damaging it or blowing it away, or any critters getting in either. I watered everything very heavily before I went away, but I know it won’t take much to dry out some of those pots 😱. Even on a cloudy day, it was regularly reaching 30°C and when the sun came out it was maxing out the digital thermometer when the door was closed 😬. I had to water some pots every other day even when we had like 15°C and sunny conditions. I was in two minds about moving some of the plants out. I moved my Owari satsuma as it was getting mould on the flowers anyway but left the fuerte avocado in. I guess we’ll see if it’s survived in a couple of days 😭
No, there are literally no garden centres around here for miles lol and we don’t have a car. Well, there is one that might be walkable, but I think it’s mostly house plants and the usual ornamentals, maybe I could have a look if I have time tomorrow. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to bring anything back with me this time.

Oh thats sad to see Brett. I wonder if the owners of the London Avocado would consider doing airlayers. Or has that been done already? Ive no idea about avocados but i imagine getting a rooted airlayer from a tree thats already acclimatised to growing in UK weather, might have an advantage over a grafted tree.

The owners have no interest in gardening and I believe the actual resident is very elderly ( I’ve never met her myself ). Avocados are also extremely difficult to air-layer with a very low success rate. It’s worth remembering that the tree is in a truly freak location and a branch from it would likely succumb to wet and cold in another location just like any other young avocado 😱

It may be over five years already
Or you can graft unto it

@AAHomeGardening I may well graft back onto it, but I’m just being realistic. When I spoke to the owners of the famous London avocado tree it took 20 years to produce its first flowers and another 10 years before it started to hold any fruit, so you need a lot of patience 😁
