Technically, it wasn't until 1994 when the Supreme Court ruled that commercial parodies can be considered "fair use," so anything prior to that it was definitely wiser/safer to get permission first, but since that ruling, I've always thought that it just showed that Weird Al has class to want the original song artists on board with his parodies. Of course, then there was the controversy with "You're Pitiful," where, like you said, there was no legal basis to stop Al from releasing the song on an album, but Al complied with the rescinding of permission and just released the song as a free digital download instead.

James Brown lent him his band and taught him the moves. He makes sure the songs are played like a serious song, that everything is exactly like the original in quality.

Actually he has to get permission. Otherwise they won't let him. Prince refused to let him parody any of his songs. Has it says in the video, Coolio wasn't particularly happy with the parody and they took him over 20 years to let it go. Secondly, the whole thing with Coolio is that Coolio's producers(or whoever) were who gave Weird Al the ok and Coolio wasn't aware until after the song had been released.

Weird Al is one of those rare artists who is so demonstrably better than everyone else in his niche that there's not even a close second. Plus he put out both quality and quantity for a long time, and he's well known to be a genuinely great dude.

Actually he has to get permission. Otherwise they won't let him. Prince refused to let him parody any of his songs. Has it says in the video, Coolio wasn't particularly happy with the parody and they took him over 20 years to let it go. I'm almost sure that he originally gave Weird Al permission regardless but I think he regretted it at first. Even though it's one of Weird Al's most iconic songs
@@HurriShane00 well first of all, he doesn't HAVE to get permission to do a parody he just makes sure the original artist is okay with it before hand or he won't. Secondly, the whole thing with Coolio is that Coolio's producers(or whoever) were who gave Weird Al the ok and Coolio wasn't aware until after the song had been released.
@@HurriShane00Weird Al doesn't have to ask permission at all to make parodies. That falls under fair use. Also Coolio really had no say in it since his song wasn't even original at all. He uses the same track as Past time Paradise
"Dare to Be Stupid" was also a song on the soundtrack of the original animated film of "Transformers," as Weird Al voiced the Wreckgar character in the film, as well.
Eric Idle was the voice in the movie. Weird Al was the voice in a more recent show.

The young man with blonde hair! He was already an Al fan. He knew ALL the words! He definitely has great parents & a great love for great music! Totally cracked me up.....in a good way. So glad to know that Al will live on in another generation now 💖💖💖
Weird Al is one of those rare artists who is so demonstrably better than everyone else in his niche that there's not even a close second.
Plus he put out both quality and quantity for a long time, and he's well known to be a genuinely great dude.
He has also made cameo appearances in things you would never expect, like that Epic Rap Battle and an episode of My Little Pony.
How do they show them Weird Al but leave out eBay or Another One Rides The Bus?!?
