In the past five videos i have learned more about fishing than i have learnt in the past 10 years... Thank you for these highly detailed, qualilty videos!
if the dough bate is sticky and messy it's got too much water in it simply leave the lid off for a few hours on a warm day and it will become thicker and more like playdoh. figured this out after I dropped a open jar in a creek!!
Great fishing tips! I always use the first method you mentioned, and I just starting using the second method before watching this video, and it works great! Never did I think of using it with a bobber because the bait floats. I mainly use bobbers on streams and rivers with live worms, that works very well!
Any advise on catching brown trout from a pond? They stocked them at 100 grams which is small, but I haven't managed to catch anything in 3 times out. They are just stubborn. I tried your rigs with worms, but not powerbait yet. I heard the browns can be hard to catch.
Thanks. That's correct. If you are fishing on the bottom like the rig shown in this video, no float is used. Instead of watching a float as a bite detector, you want to keep your line fairly tight so when the fish bites, the rod tip will move. Good luck!
It really depends on quite a few things. I tend to use a float rig more than a bottom rig, unless the water is deep and I can only reach the fish by fishing on the bottom. I also avoid using a float if the surface is too choppy due to wind (hard to see the float).
Glad I stumbled on to your video. Lot's of great Trout tip's. (wish we had more trout spots here in OKC area) lol ... In fact I started searching for your Vid's in particular as they are the most informative. Great Job!
Hi Rod, love the videos. Im just getting into using a cast net for catching live bait for trout fishing, and would greatly benefit from some basic instruction in this area. Thank you, JV.
That's correct, this is mainly used for sitting and waiting in stocked lakes. For stream fishing, I personally prefer to find natural bait such as single eggs.
Which method would you use when fishing a river with moderate current. Im leaning toward the sliding method since I think it would be less likely for the weight to get wedged under rocks and such at the bottom. I could be way off base though. Thanks! Love all the videos!
Great vid thanks.... Is this a good set up for stream fishing? I'm going opening day and the water is moving nice very clear.... What color artificial for clear water?
playinragz This bait and method is mainly used for bottom fishing in a lake. For stream fishing, you'll need to use a float and other bait which stay on the hook better will work better. Try single eggs, deli shrimp, krill, corn, dew worm, meal worm, maggot, they should all work well.
hi Rod, i was wondering if it's necessary to use herring rigs when fishing them? or can i still use spinners? Thank you for taking the time to consider my question!
So, would I be correct in thinking the methods outlined in the beginning of the video are intended for bait fishing *without* a float? The setup I have been using this year (with no success!) consisted of : float>2 ft of mainline>split shot>swivel>1 ft of leader>bait. I previously thought this would keep the bait down in the strike zone (1ft above bottom), however now i realise the split shot was probably preventing the float from indicating strikes? I guess I should try sliding weights? and/or eliminate the float entirely? Great videos and congrats on creating a real invaluable source!!
Thanks. :) That's correct, the method explained here is for bait fishing without a float because of the type of bait being used. This artificial bait tends to float in the water so best to use a weight to anchor it near the bottom. If you're float fishing with it, the bait would float up and the float actually won't go down if you get a bite (unless you put a little split shot right by the hook to weigh it down, or use a jighead hook). Your float setup is fine, either split shots or a sliding weight work. You should try a couple other options for bait. Krill or deli shrimp (cooked ones that you can buy from the grocery store for shrimp salad) work great. Single salmon/trout eggs work very well too, but my preference is definitely krill/shrimp. There are a couple of videos which feature this in our channel: Fishing with Rod: Float Fishing for Urban Trout and Fishing with Rod: Float, Egg, Trout! Good luck! :)
After watching this vid last year, I went out and bought a selection of Fire Bait.... That was around December. When I opened them up around the beginning of trout season in April, all had gone bad - gooey, messy, not fun to use. So I wrote them and they said some I had were actually recalled five years ago. A shock, because I got them at a regional dept store. Anyway, Pautzke replaced all quickly. Just a little FYI in case it's happened to you. Just write to their contact address on their web site.
When u want to fish on the bothem of the lake you don't use a float right? btw great vid fishing season opening soon here in Belguim, your vids are again really helpful :)
Hey Rod Great Videos! I have tried the 3-way swivel for bottom fishing and it works great but my leader with the hook always spins around the main line leading to the weight. Any ideas on how to prevent this or what I may be doing wrong?
hey rod have u ever fished lafarge lake with those baits cus theres a fihsing derby coming up and i want to know if they work at that lake so if u have did they work well?? great vid u should fish lafarge again (:
Im very new to fishing and using these would I use this kind of artificial Bait with a normal weighted hook and Bobber or would I put this on a Jig hook and reel it in like a Jig?
BlueRed Finch The leader from the weight to the bait is around 1 to 2 feet, or longer if you wish. It really depends on how high you want your bait to float off the bottom. If you want it higher, then use a longer leader. Not so sure if the bait is still usable once it hardens, I would contact TeamPautzke and they should give you the right answer. Good luck!
Rod, Do these baits work for wild trout, or salmon? From what I know, other artificial baits like corn and marshmallows work nearly exclusively for stocked trout in small rivers. Is that true for powerbaits?
I have used Power Bait on an ultra-lite rod with 4pound test line using a red and white bobber for weight and let the bait float on top of the water. Mountain lake trout will hit it so hard that they will swallow the hook making it darned near impossible to remove the hook
what pound line test do you recommend when lake fishing for trout? I've invested a good 20 hours at a local lake that is stocked twice a month and have not caught anything. I'm using this exact same setup. I'm using 8 pound test which may be too heavy? I also don't use a rod holder, I know trout are sensitive, but would they notice such thing? Are size 8 bait holder hooks small enough?
Rod, I have a question about your first rig in this video. Isn't it required in BC to put sinker on either sliding swivel or on a detachable fixture in order for sinker to fall off in case if your rig got broken or cut? I think I saw something about that in a fishing synopsis. Thanks
Any color of power bait on the top in the shank, use canned corn and put as many kernels you can fit on the rest of the hook. Don't use and 3 way swivel use split shot on a 10-12 leader. Fishing with Rod i urge you to try my method. I have years of experience guiding on the white river. The power bait floats the hook, the corn looks like competing species eggs you cannot go wrong with this for stocked trout.
I would caution that if you're backpacking with any bait that has a smell to it, remember to bear-bag it with your food, even if you can't smell it when the jar is closed.
Hello there...one question: Can I use this bait on all kinds of fish? I have some of these, which I bought in USA and using them in Nepalese waters...to be more exact in Kathmandu...
There is one thing thow Rod, I have no experiance with "Firebait"...but i have experimented with berkleys paste and salmon eggs alot ! Berkleys Salmon Eggs, only works with Kamasan B983 6size wide gape carbon hooks Berkleys paste does not float, or those that i have tested havn't. part one of the message
not sure if you ever found the beads. i got some similar at my local tackle shop, look for the beads near the components section. it is common near me to find this stuff in a steelhead section. an alternative would be to get a "wedding ring" and take it apart and use those beads. hope this helps.
+Sara Smith It depends on where you are fishing and the time of the year when you are fishing. In spring, if you are fishing in lakes, trout typically take over the shallow parts of the water (anywhere from 10 to 20 feet deep) and feed heavily after not being able to eat much throughout the winter months. In the summer they move into deeper water as the surface temperature rises. Once it starts cooling down in the fall, fish move back into the shallows and fishing can be good again. Any shaded spots, underwater logs, weed beds, etc are all good covers for trout.
Unfortunately your options are pretty limited especially if you are fishing from a stationary point on land. You can try pulling the line straight backward to see if the rock would come loose or the vegetation would break. More often than not you will lose your rig.
I've never fished the river that you are talking about so difficult to answer. With that said, generally we'd like to go with the brighter coloured bait in darker water, darker coloured bait in clearer water.
+connor manklow I believe over a year ago there was a bad batch being distributed. You should give Pautzke Bait a call and I'm sure they'll be very happy to take care of it like they have done to some of the other customers who experienced the same issue.

Thx Rod. Your videos are really good.
awesome video i think i'll try this next time i'm out on the lake

Great video as always, Rod!
I love to use Berkley PowerBait...it's all I use when bait fishing for trout!
Great instructions. Thanks.

I never thought of using power bait with a float! That would make it much harder for my kids to get snagged in the bottom! Thanks man nice tips
Great clip. Thanks Man!

Hey Rod
Great Videos!
I have tried the 3-way swivel for bottom fishing and it works great but my leader with the hook always spins around the main line leading to the weight. Any ideas on how to prevent this or what I may be doing wrong?
For fishing in moving water, float fishing is best so you can keep the bait suspended just above the riverbed as it drifts downstream.
When fishing for trout, when should you use a float (surface fishing) and when should you forgo the float to bottom fish for trout?
For wild trout and salmon, I would say natural bait, lures and flies which imitate what they feed on in the wild work best.
hey rod have u ever fished lafarge lake with those baits cus theres a fihsing derby coming up and i want to know if they work at that lake so if u have did they work well??
great vid u should fish lafarge again (:
awsome video rod
hi rod, i wanted to ask you does pautzkes really work, and would you do a video of pautzkes dough bait vs powerbait. thank you
Thank u for quick reply ,what is the best way to setup the line and the weight so we don't touch the ground.thanks
George Georges Try using a float. Check out our float fishing for trout videos for more info.
Im very new to fishing and using these would I use this kind of artificial Bait with a normal weighted hook and Bobber or would I put this on a Jig hook and reel it in like a Jig?
nice vid man :)
thanks for sharing. if your bait goes hard, is there a way to soften it? also how long the line from the sinker to your baits?
BlueRed Finch The leader from the weight to the bait is around 1 to 2 feet, or longer if you wish. It really depends on how high you want your bait to float off the bottom. thx for the tips it will help a lot :)
Nice video helped me alot
excellent vids . very helpful thx
10:27-ish.
You meant to put the split shot right above the hook, not the weight, correct?
~Kenneth
Rod,
Do these baits work for wild trout, or salmon? From what I know, other artificial baits like corn and marshmallows work nearly exclusively for stocked trout in small rivers. Is that true for powerbaits?
I'm sure it works at Lafarge, but be sure to bring some krill and deli shrimp as well.

Hey Rodney what ounce sinkers should i be using when i'm on a lake fishing for trout
so your setup or the bait itself is more for sit and wait fishing than say stream fishing???

Trout would definitely notice 8 pound line, try 4 pound line with a 8 - 12 inch leader of 2 pound. And for a hook I use a size 10 snelled bait hook
great vid ty!
Thank you!! The trouts are mine.
Marisa Quinonez You're welcome.
great video!
Hey does mighty bite work?
what was the name of the bait you had in the video? my sound quality isn't very good so i couldn't hear it.
Rod, I have a question about your first rig in this video. Isn't it required in BC to put sinker on either sliding swivel or on a detachable fixture in order for sinker to fall off in case if your rig got broken or cut? I think I saw something about that in a fishing synopsis. Thanks
+Eugene Malyuta I'm not aware of such regulation.
i like the norweigian painting in the back :D
isn't this stuff the same as power bait? if not could you tell me the difference?
For float fishing you can use regular #6 hook and it will sink the bait slowly..One power egg only!
Hi how can i fishing in sea wish baits and hoks and ticnek ...thank you
If you use fluorocarbon as leader with powerbait, will it make the powerbait sink to the bottom where you don't want it to be?
The bait should have enough buoyancy to keep it floating off the bottom.
***** Thanks for the reply
Love your vids I subscribe
I would caution that if you're backpacking with any bait that has a smell to it, remember to bear-bag it with your food, even if you can't smell it when the jar is closed.
That's the way I do a brother I can catch rainbows with that setup in less than 5 minutes great video
Hello there...one question:
Can I use this bait on all kinds of fish? I have some of these, which I bought in USA and using them in Nepalese waters...to be more exact in Kathmandu...
They only work best for trout. It doesn't matter where you live, but the clarity of the lake does.
Thank you!
Can this bait be used for catching other kinds of fish such as snappers And sea robins? Other types
MrHDInsanity Not really, this is primarily for trout.
I've caught small mouth bass, lake trout,walleye,4 types of catfish and many others on dough bait. But I use powerbait not fire bait.
+King_Of _Collectibles I've had pike attack powerbait.
There is one thing thow Rod,
I have no experiance with "Firebait"...but i have experimented with berkleys paste and salmon eggs alot !
Berkleys Salmon Eggs, only works with Kamasan B983 6size wide gape carbon hooks
Berkleys paste does not float, or those that i have tested havn't.
part one of the message
jve never caught trout with that kid of bait i hear trout have very good vision and to thick of line scares the away is that true
Is this only for hatchery rainbow trout? Will it work on wild Cutthroats?
There is only one way to find out.
Will that bait work with wild trout
Daragh Doyle Yes.
Powerbait by Berkley is another great artificial trout bait.
What is the name of the bead you used?
not sure if you ever found the beads. i got some similar at my local tackle shop, look for the beads near the components section. it is common near me to find this stuff in a steelhead section. an alternative would be to get a "wedding ring" and take it apart and use those beads. hope this helps.
Use whatever you are confident with.
Thanks Sheldon. :)
I just can't seem to catch trout. what kind of spot or cover should I look for ?
+Sara Smith It depends on where you are fishing and the time of the year when you are fishing. In spring, if you are fishing in lakes, trout typically take over the shallow parts of the water (anywhere from 10 to 20 feet deep) and feed heavily after not being able to eat much throughout the winter months. +Fishing with Rod thank you very much for the reply!
+Sara Smith You're welcome. Anytime. :)
hey rod, what size weight is that?
san saeteurn It's a bit less than 1 ounce I think.
what u do when your weight get caught between the rocks on bottom of lake or to the vegetation, thanks
Unfortunately your options are pretty limited especially if you are fishing from a stationary point on land. You can try pulling the line straight backward to see if the rock would come loose or the vegetation would break. More often than not you will lose your rig.
hello there, does anyone know what's the best color I can use in water color like kern river. ?
I've never fished the river that you are talking about so difficult to answer. With that said, generally we'd like to go with the brighter coloured bait in darker water, darker coloured bait in clearer water.
drakovr orange or green
when i trow the rod why it falls the bait and the hook is empty when falls down into the water
Thank you. :)
Great!
is that a 5mm bead or a 6mm bead?
Pure4Kicks Not sure actually, probably a 5.
Thanks for responding
I bought this fire bait and it had the consistency of cake frosting and stuck to my fingers allot, any suggestions
+connor manklow I believe over a year ago there was a bad batch being distributed. You should give Pautzke Bait a call and I'm sure they'll be very happy to take care of it like they have done to some of the other customers who experienced the same issue.
+Fishing with Rod thanks man
Sometimes it happens for me and sometimes it doesnt
thanks for the video
is the bait bad for the fish/river?
Every time I try a rig set up like that when I cast out it gets all tangled up
Try to stop your line from going out just before the end of the cast when the rig hits the water. That could help.
Personally I prefer pink and green/chartreuse.
