Fantastic toy, I got one of these for Christmas in the 80s. I still have it, I also did a light restoration, it works perfectly. Here in Brazil this product was called "Maxi Cargo"
That is a brilliant system and yes entertaining to watch. Imagine if you could swap the traction unit of your coupe into an SUV body for a road trip, then roll it out into an excavator shell for some landscaping, etc. 😂
Good video Randi.I never had one as a child myself, we couldn't have afforded the batteries never mind the toy in 1970's Ireland. Santa brought one to my son one Christmas (he's 30 now ). It was a Thomas the Tank engine themed one but was essentially the same.
I remember that from the late 70’s into the early 80’s. I knew a few kids who had one, so I definitely remember playing with them but I never had my own. I was always fascinated by toys and model displays with automated motion. The toy designers at Tomy made some amazing products at the time. I’m still amazed that they did the speed and direction changes with mechanical gears instead of an electrical switch of some type but Tomy did tend to make mostly mechanical designs. Opening my toys when I was young taught me how to fix them. I also really like the bag of assorted gears. I’ve fixed a lot of old toys that had cracked gears on a metal shaft, so that assortment has helped me restore the toys functionality. I have a few spring assortments too, for those times when you open something and a spring decides to fly across the room. These are my favorite of your videos. I guess it’s something I already do and I really enjoy watching you do things that I might not attempt, so now I have a little added confidence for when I see something similar. Thank you for educating while also entertaining. It’s almost like watching Mr. Wizard’s World but with toy repairs.
This was one of those hidden gem toys--I think I got it as a birthday gift at some point and probably did not thank the person who gave it to me appropriately because I don't at all remember who, when or where. I *thought* it was for little kids until one day I set it up and found that it was actually quite amazing. Thanks for sharing this and unlocking a special memory for me. :)
awww bless,i was a year older, these were always on display in Germany where i lived in shopping centers ,you had big play areas for us kids while parents went shopping ,happy days.fascinating toys of Tomy x
Nice work Randi. Another classic toy/game that you saved from the trash bin. I can imagine you getting frustrated when the dang thing didn't work on Thanksgiving... It probably bothered you the whole time until you got the chance to teach it a lesson of who's the boss again! Thanks so much for sharing with all of us. You are the master! Fred
Ahhh the memories! I got one of these for Christmas probably a year or so after it was originally release and it was MAGIC!! I could sit and watch it for hours...or what seemed like hours to a 5 year old. They seem to release it every so often and the last I saw it was all colorful. I prefer the original. I was surprised they actually made another version and you could connect them both into a bigger set. I need to find the second one!
Yes, there is the Big Big Loader Construction Set. I'm on the lookout for one at a decent price. People ask crazy numbers for them. I found one for a decent price, but I would have to drive hours to get it.
I remember wanting one of these when I saw it in a department store aged about 10. However, my parents felt that it wasn't interactive/educational enough to justify the price (because once assembled it does its own thing). Actually, the first thing I would have done is look underneath the wagon to see the levers and the triggers for them on the tracks, so might have learned something about simple robotics that way. (In mathematics/computing, it could also be used as an illustration of the basic principle of a Turing Machine, though it isn't a Universal Turing Machine).
I completely U.N.D.E.R.E.S.T.I.M.A.T.E.D this Tomy™Big Loader. Very COoL. You always seem to be geared up for the task at hand. Just one question; does it use a 286 or 386 processor to navigate the course? Thanks for the walk through. It's a definite winner.
12 year old me wished I wasn’t too old for one of these (and the speak n spell but I managed to get my hands on one of those and take it apart before the 7 year olds’ mom came over and demanded I give it back 😂 I was getting ready to wire it up to my trs-80 😆).
Wish I still had mine from the early 80's but it got thrown out after one or more of the gears self destructed. I took it apart when it broke, but wasnt much I could do back then with no replacement parts available. Would be a relatively easy fix today with modern replacements I think.
Hi, here in Brazil the name was 'MAXI CARGO" (80s) I have one and I'll make a video soon! Congratulations! Oi aqui no Brasil o nome era 'MAXI CARGO" (1980) eu tenho um logo farei um Vídeo ! Parabéns!
We bought this for our kids around 1984. It’s very clever (Plus you did an amazing job in repairing it!) but our kids were sick of it after about 10 minutes and they proceeded to dismantle it over the next few days!! Not great for young imaginations
Modern art is terrible. Many pieces of modern art have been mistaken for rubbish and thrown away inside of museums. I have nothing but loathing and contempt for modern art.
To each their own. I'm not going to try to change your mind. I do think it's a pretty harsh stance on something that doesn't affect your life in any way. It sounds exhausting. I tend to keep my loathing to important stuff. I like to conserve my loathing. You can only loath so much.

I always wanted that when I was a kid. Somebody brought one into school once, and it was magical. I could have watched it for hours!

What an amazing little game, I really like this one. I wish they still sold something similar to this, I'm sure my kids would love it.
It's one of those that you look at and think, "How long did it take to figure that out?"
As an only child it was one of my favorites.

I totally remember this toy! I remember the commercial for it. I wanted it so bad but never got it. Thank you for the walk down Memory Lane! 😁
Really glad to see this toy again. So neat and complicated.
Yep, this one is very clever.

Yeah, as a kid stuff like this would be set up at the doors to toy shops.

Ace!
y'know, i'm pretty sure i had the Thomas & Friends version of this as a kid. it's probably long gone, but it's nice to see the original version.
Yes, there is a Thomas the tank version.
🤘

Girl I’m in love. I’m surrounded by lads and galls that can’t change their watch battery!

my neighbor got one of those for Christmas in 1978
The Big Loader has many different iterations. I've had the 1990s one with coloured track sections.
You should Have a Video making more Rocks
ok but what was the kids reaction? was he like "WOW!" or this "isn't Minecraft!"

I can see that but taking it apart was the best part of these.
