Seymour Duncan makes the best pickups out of any brand out there. Nothing compares… if you’re going active, get blackouts. If you’re going passive, get a JB
They all sound really good ain't gonna lie but for me the EMG 81 and 85 pickups are the gold standard. I finally got my dream guitar with EMG 81 and 85s installed and couldn't be happier. The original Blackouts would be my second choice for a 6 string (even though these Mick Thompson Blackouts are sick too). For a 7 string I'd go with the Seymour Duncan Retributions hands down.
I never liked active pick ups they always sounded too tiny and thin. Recently, I just bought a Jackson with black out in it. I am totally blown away by the blackouts Those pick ups are amazing. Very articulate, thick and juicy.
Cool video man. Nice job. I prefer the 81 but I just got a new amp and it has a ton of gain. The katana 50mk2. I bet the 85 qould sound much better now tho. Also just ordered the mick thomson soloist that has the duncan blackouts in it and we will see how that works out. Never tried them Before.
Thanks. It's really just a matter of taste. The EMG's are more scooped and aggressive while the Blackouts have more mids and will cut through a dense mix or live better.
Got myself a gretch baritone for low tuned stuff, I actually dig the classic look about the guitar but want to turn it into a "sleeper" guitar with active pickups. I think I'll go with blackouts thanks to this video. To my monitors they sound more open, a little brighter. Dino Cazares mentioned this in a coffee with ola video. I think he just made a pickup of his own to turn down the brightness a tad bit.
I have emg 81/85 in my Hellraizer c-1. they're awesome, but i'm thinking about trying out a set of blackouts on my ESP as I've been using emg for years. Seymour Duncans are sounding much more detailed.
It's strange. The Duncans are naturally more distorted, but the EMGs sound more compressed and less dynamic. You'd think more gainy of the two pickups would have less dynamics and articulation.
Of course ahb3 I use em my dinky it's so good alot of tone clear note by note tight low end but I have to lower my bass on my eq a bit and scoop some mids it's so good awesome demo very good love blackouts
@@jaredpettit3279 In ur video when u pause talking, in between words u do a uncomfortable/ nervous twitch and make a sound with ur mouth I've heard it called tounge smacking or lip smacking. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass or negative in any way. I really liked the video and was kinda surprised I found it cuz it was exactly what I was looking for and it's the reason I decided to go with the 85, Blackout sounds great too but has a dry sound when it's struck with the pick. Anyway, I went to school for communications/ public speaking and when people are either uncomfortable or not 100%confident in front of the camera they do a nervous twitch the ptttttt sound with their mouth, some don't know what to do with their hands some say um over and over some say ok, so over n over. I wasn't talking shit just trying to provide a little insight since u made this video that helped me out. If this is something ur gonna be doing I would imagine u wanna do it the absolute best u can. Hope I was being helpful not at all down grading u did a really good job with the video.

This side of UA-cam the EMGs sound much better than the blackouts. More clarity on individual notes and more balance. I liked the EMGs better.
Blackouts are top notch

For the bridge pickup, the Blackouts have a lot more tone and at high gain they also have more bite.

Are those Seymour Duncan Blackout Mick Thomas?
Those Blackouts though! Sound so much fuller. I've had EMGs for years but I may have to try SD out.
good comparison, well done!
Very cool! Excellent comparison. Great video, thank you!

Any updates?
Those are the Mick Thomson blackouts
Thanks for the video!
Blackouts!!!! Though EMG active neck pickups are unbeatable

For the bridge, the 81 is king 👑.

tone with a lot "heeeeeee" egdy highs: goblin. tone with muscular throaty mids: orc.
EMG 85 orc, Blackout goblin?
The Blackouts just sound ‘fuller’ overall.
Should try to stop the tounge smacking thing. No disrespect. Just think u could connect better with people.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Please elaborate?

the blackouts sound less toppy and more ch0nky, which i personally prefer
