I’m convinced that Victarion is going to try and sail through the Smoking Sea, as a shortcut back to Westeros. After all, he’s blessed by the gods of sea and fire, so what could go wrong sailing through boiling water?
If he dies, that’s to be expected. If he doesn’t die, that’s hilarious. I just want this dumbass to keep failing upwards

He is very much the one character I think George should just have survive the whole ordeal, would be funny if he had like an epilogue chapter wherever he ends up.

I like the idea that Victarion is too stupid to die. No one thinks he’s a real threat by himself, but still an excellent pawn; thus he somehow manages to get to the end, like the sigma male he is.
Not every character needs to die, people can be exiled, crippled, imprisoned or simply let go

I think the honest reality is that GRRM may not "like" the character, but he loves *writing* him... there's so many clever, manipulative plotters in the series that he has to write, and more than a few naive young children (like Bran, whom Martin has said is the hardest character for him to write because he has to try to think like an 8 year old)... Martin's got a ton of characters who are difficult to write, people making plans within plans or struggling with difficult moral choices... and sometimes writing a big dummy who just likes killin' stuff is fun... I think GRRM has refused to kill Vic so far because writing his chapters is probably more fun than anyone else's, and every now and then you just need to take a break from writing "clever" characters
Maybe this is why Winds of Winter has taken so long to write, all the "fun" to write characters are gone D;
So he actually likes Victarion. If only he gave the same affection for the Starks.

I love Vic. All his chapters are great, mine favovite moment was when he was "emancipation" slaves from the ships he captured on his way to Daeny whilst still making them do exatcly what they did before. I can just picture his interaction with Daeny, trying to impress her, "You know, I'm somthing of a Breaker of Chains myself"
His "emancipation" of slaves through the words of Roy Datrice and all of Victarions povs is why his are my favorite povs!

Euron keeps speaking, thinking he can continue to manipulate his brother. However, sigma male Victarion has yet to meet argument his axe can’t solve.
Him being the right character to do sa is a great point against him being the one to take out Euron
A decent twist would be if Euron summoned the eldritch gods, only for him and Vic to fight, with Vic victorious. However, in a strange twist, the gods have great demands he cannot hope to match and he ends up dooming a great portion of the world due to his ego. So while he is victorious in killing Euron he destroys countless lives in exchange.

I think Grrm realized that a character being alive does not necessarily mean that they need to have a ton of pov chapters and instead can just be present and important to the story through other povs.
For Victarion i think him being potentially part of Daenerys camp in TWOW and interacting with characters like Tyrion and Barristan is just really cool and interesting so I think he just kept him alive for that instead of just killing him of to make space for more important povs
He's definitely got motivation to depose Euron and take the Kraken Throne

Considering how Dan and Dave did not even include Victarion in the show at all, I expect Martin to give him an outsized role in the story going forward. For spite, if nothing else. 😀

Um... What is dead may never die? Victarion has been drowned by the drowned god and resurected (something that hasnt happened to euron- i think) therefore surely that coupled with his potential immunity to fire magic, bestowed by his burning hand will make him the perfect character to blow dragon binder (i hope).
cool video Quinn, I think he planned to have Euron come to SB originally and Vic wasn't needed to live long in that scenario. Just FYI the Celtigar kraken horn is not said to be Valyrian or Valyrian steel. Celtigar is of Valyrian descent, so it may be so, but it isn't said. That would be kinda nuts actually if the Valyrians were thinking about krakens
I had that realization about the horn pretty much as soon as I uploaded. Think I got my wires crossed and got mixed up, since I think the dragonhorn has Valyrian runes and the axe is Valyrian steel.
well it's a reasonable thing to wonder about since Celtigar is Valyrian. Like Ive never even considered that the horn could be Valyrian too. It's always been kind of a mystery. I love the idea of Vic raiding Claw Isle like a power up bonanza haha
Vic to this day feels like the dude that no one bets on yet ends up with all the gold. I would love it if that ends up happening and he is the one to rule the Greyjoy name.

I love dumb evil himbo just getting really lucky and assuming he is actually blessed and super smart. You brought up how he is sailing ingo battle at the start of Winds, buf Victarion is by far in the best position for the battle out of any of the many factions.
He is far enough away to avoid the dragon fire, is ambusing a small fleet that is not prepared at all for it, will likely land after Barriston has led his charge and after Tyrion has the 2nd Sons join Dany.
He'll attack, then land on shore, then be the freshest army in a war likely to be won by Dany and Myreen.
Victarion will luck his way unto being the hero of Myreen

Vic is one of my favs, his PoV has surprising vocabulary from an ironborn. He's brutal and awful but a bit endearing? Kind of character you could actually say "I can fix him" and tbh him and Dany could compliment each other well

And Dany clearly has a thing for strong men, as long as she can keep them under her thumb. Someone like Vic who is too dumb to scheme around her might be perfect for her, I can see her falling for him 😅

Victarion is just about my favorite character. I even used his name for my UA-cam account at one time. Even had a kraken as my avatar!

Victorion seems to be one of those characters George loved writing for so much he kept him around, possibly due to how simple he is. I think he's been upgraded in literary sense to someone that will play a larger supporting role. He seems to be a bit of a power fantasy for George, much in the same way Euron is. If Vic does get the axe and horn, he's more than likely joining the last supporting cast like an RPG party member.

@alvimgabriel4400 ask yourself if you were a writer what you'd use hin for. Because George is pushing him 2 directions, on one hand it looks like he's gonna have some sort of showdown with Euron to spice up the Drowned God lore. On the other he might be one of Danys entourage for how she gets to Westoros and might just settle as a supporting character for her crew.
I love how Vic despite being a dumbass is one of the best fighters and naval commanders in the entire series

If we never get an official end to the series, my headcanon ending includes Victarion and Asha defeating Euron and ruling the Iron Islands together.
No idea what George's intended ending for them is though. After so many changes, he probably doesn't really know himself anymore.

3:46 that 2003 chapter list on the left. Is that the confirmed reading order Martin intended before the split? Or is that Gsteff making a guess? Very interesting that before the split, we wouldn't have seen tyrion until 19 chapters into the book if that was the intended structure.
The "Crow" could be Aemon as it is uncertain if GRRM had decided to kill him off yet.

I love Victarion. He may not be a dashing like Jaime or cool like Arthur Dayne. He is not as upstanding as Barristan or clever like Stannis. But he has quality. He is honourable, in that rigid sense. He is strong and brave and he has principles. He isn't dishonest, unless you count his planned betrayal of Euron. But he isn't a snake.
Vic is kind of like a flat top/mullet high school jock that thinks he's god's gift to mankind because he's good at football. But' honestly, this story needed a character like that.
When I read that Vic was being sent to Dany and that Euron would follow later, I saw that as a sign that Vic was sailing straight into a trap. He'll probably end up thrown under the bus by Euron or Dany will lose her shit at him or both. Ironborn are pretty infamous and I doubt those freed by Dany wouldn't not recognise him, at least by word/name if not experience. There's suggestions that the woman with Vic 'from' Euron could be Naathi. Given Dany's companions, I can't see that going well either.

The name "Victarion" = Victor/Victory, so it seems like he should be "victorious" is some way and his VS armor and weapon certainly make him hard to kill. Taking Euron out to aid Dany could be interesting. Everybody loves a good bro fight. Greyjoy Bowl...Get Hype?!?!

Fact is his chapters are very well written and to me it seems GRRM had a lot of fun writting him and so he outlived his early doom.
I hope he kinda keeps failing upwards. Depending on who he ends up working for he is an interesting dude to have around and an alternative POV when needed.
Would be fun him actually getting a "good" ending.
This might too simple for ASOIAF, but it is too crazy to think that Victarion will survive the story and become the new leader of the Iron Islands? I mean, he is so dumb and fun to see, he could just be this cool side character who will hype the other characters around him and fight The Others with a valyrian steel battle axe. And in the end he wil be cool with whoever sits on te throne.
Perhaps Victarion is useful to George in his "Meerenese Knot."

I think too that Victarion lives long enough to ally with Dany and go back to Westeros. I think that if he dies it has to be against Euron, maybe Victarion even takes control of a dragon and thinks this time he has outmatched his brother only to get one last cruel laugh in his face before Euron reveals himself as the true master of the horn and the real master of the dragon

Vic listens to prophecy well unlike many main characters
Might as well keep him alive. He's become a very interesting character especially with Moqorro and how he's now worshipping the Drowned God and R'hllor. He could also serve as an Iron Born that's against Euron and fights back

It is the little bit of hope i have left in every getting the next book.
Maybe Victarion dies, but Moqorro brings him back as a full fire wight. Or the magic hand he has does that upon him succumbing to mortal wounds.

My gut tells me that Victarion will likely die in the Meereen battle at some point, but also that if he doesn't, he will likely survive to at least the battle with the Others. I can also see GRRM deciding to let the character live so that there are chapters where Tyrion and Victarion banter at each other, one of the smartest characters and one of the dumbest.

Many people believe Victarion will die because we need less characters so the story can go forward, wich is true but it is not what Martin is doing if he was we would have winds, I think Martin would die on a battle on the stepstones on the way back from Essos it would be the perfect place for a battle between Euron and Dany's fleet, as for claw Island I have no doubt the Kraken horn was something Euron was meant to get at some point, but after scraping the 5 year gap there is no time for Euron to get the Horn as soon as I think he will be using it, I think he will be summoning a kraken on the reach in early winds meaning, Probrably they wil make it so that there are more of one horn with that power(not many but more than one), and Euron happens to have one, that or Euron was able to steal the horn during a clash of kings o storm of swords, not on a raid but on a stealth mission there are rumours about a kraken on the fingers on storm of swords so it's possible it was an early test
His name is also similar to the terms." "Victor" and "victorious". So it would actually be poetic if he dies a victorious man in the end.

I’ve always liked brutish characters that live within the laws of nature rather than the laws of man. I’ve always found them fascinating; Karnus au bellona is another one from the red rising trilogy
If I had to guess, he's going to have an epic duel with Barristan where they either both die, or Barristan just straight-up kills him.

Victarion is already dead! Just like Moqorro and Melisandre. He is probably based on a character from Memory Sarrow and Thorn who starts hunting and killing Norns and the Others in the book.

The part in A Clash of Kings where he's riding on his pony and people are cheering him on still fills my eyes with tears. Please give him a happy ending where he's riding around Casterly Rock on his pony with Tyrion on horseback riding beside him. Also, maybe Tommen and Myrcella can be best friends with Wylla Manderly, Shireen Baratheon, Bran Stark, and Rickon Stark if they survive along with Tommen's cats. 😢

The Hound laughed. "She has you there."
Joffrey was beaten. "Very well. Even my brother couldn't tilt any worse than these others. Master, bring out the quintain, Tommen wants to be a gnat."
Tommen gave a shout of joy and ran off to be readied, his chubby little legs pumping hard. "Luck," Sansa called to him.

Tommen raised the blade high. "Casterly Rock!" he shouted in a high boyish voice as he put his heels into his pony and started across the hard-packed dirt at the quintain. Lady Tanda and Lord Gyles started a ragged cheer, and Sansa added her voice to theirs. The king brooded in silence.
Tommen got his pony up to a brisk trot, waved his sword vigorously, and struck the knight's shield a solid blow as he went by. The quintain spun, the padded mace flying around to give the prince a mighty whack in the back of his head. Tommen spilled from the saddle, his new armor rattling like a bag of old pots as he hit the ground. His sword went flying, his pony cantered away across the bailey, and a great gale of derision went up. King Joffrey laughed longest and loudest of all.

"Look," the Hound interrupted. "The boy has courage. He's going to try again."
They were helping Prince Tommen mount his pony. If only Tommen were the elder instead of Joffrey, Sansa thought. I wouldn't mind marrying Tommen.

Yet Tommen put his spurs into his pony and galloped headlong across the yard, shouting with glee. … Tommen's breathless laughter echoed off the walls as Tyrion clapped him on the backplate, and Sansa was startled to see that the two were of a height.
George is still counting his sweet HBO money. WoW is never gonna come out
George could and maybe should, sell his original drafts and early manuscripts that are complete different from release.

I am still wondering why we needed 4 greyjoy viewpoints, most of them, besides theon, revolving around euron, another greyjoy...
If I had to (or could) choose, Victarion dies in the battle of fire and Theon gets what he deserves from Stannis (kill the fucker alreader I wanna see him dead, yes i know it's an unpopular opinion)
Asha and Theon sit in the same place atm, one is probably gonna die, if they don't get separated soon.
Aeron has a unique view on euron's happenings, though he at least seems to be done in soon by his brother.
I'd say keep Aeron and Asha.
