Funny, i moved from Notion to Obsidian about 3 weeks ago, and looked a lot on your account to get used to it. I don't feel to look back though i don't need heavy project management as you do. I worked on Notion for years and used it at its full capacity, and i agree that it's really the best for managing projects, but it's complexity over time turned me down, and what attracts me the most on Obsidian is it's simplicity and that it work like a brain, with neurons, so it feels more intuitive to use. Notion don't connect notes as efficiently, but get the job done with task management. Thanks for the fresh review :)

Ayy, glad you still enjoyed the video despite already being experienced with Notion :D Out of curiosity, do you just use Obsidian for simple task/project management now then, or have you just cut it out completely? I agree with your stance though, Obsidian is miles ahead of Notion in terms of note-taking thanks to its connective nature :)

HI John, I remember when first day of class in COGS last semester you recommended me use Obsidian for school but I did really enjoy the UI. It also looked too Computer Science-y if that makes sense. At the beginning one of my friends was showing me her Notion and I was interested in making one but never got around to it. Recently, I've been noticing a lot of people in my study groups have Notion installed on their laptops which made me remember the application. I've also had a bad semester and have been trying to find ways to manage my due dates and overall productivity better. Luckily comes your video John! While I was unable to view it earlier due to other work and commitments, I finally have a free day to watch your video. Thank you for creating this video, it really has taught me a lot and I loved to see your work flow especially since I see you as someone who has got it all together. 🙏

The reason I moved away from notion over to Obsidian is because I felt that notion was not secure enough, as I didn't want my notes taken away from me. I'm not sure if they have fixed that now.

In terms of privacy or backup? The risk of Notion suddenly losing their cloud storage is there, albeit very small, but I mainly just use it for planning so it shouldn't be too bad if it happens. Imo i would just keep all knowledge-related notes in Obsidian, as I prefer the app anyways for note taking :)

Hi John, it’s been a month since I commented on your Obsidian video. I have decided to use Notion + Obsidian side by side for college. I am curious to know how you would use Obsidian and Notion together to make a working productivity + learning flow. I have a paper planner for dailies. But I use Google Calendar for weekly schedule and office hours and other commitments. Maybe Notion could be used for actual deadlines and reading schedules (for each class?). I don’t have a lot of time to click so much things during process of learning and schoolwork and research. What would you recommend? Would you be interested in moving this conversation to email?

After using notion for quite some time, I feel that the "need urge" to use database for everything is quite overkill...
And using a simple "TOC" at the top of the page make thinks so much easier and with less friction... instead of creating pages inside pages.
Like here 10:01, you use database items for each map and inside the map, you use pages... before, when Notion was poorly optimized/slower, I used a lot this approach.
But know, that Notion started to get more faster/optimized, I started to use more Table of Contents and nesting headers with background color, and callouts.
The bad thing is that you can only use 3 levels of heading... but in the Valorant, you should use #Maps, ##Agent, ###Line-ups type... or #Line-ups type, ##Maps, ###Agent... just you can know how you can organize. With time, the more metadata you use, the usability will get more complex, and you will see that you take too much time to maintaining the system and too much input... and not getting too much output from the system.
Less is more in the long run.

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  2 роки тому +2

I did not know about the table of contents feature, that does seem quite handy ! I personally disagree with the maps section as i think new ideas/concepts should be in their own page, which is a note taking philosophy i developed from Obsidian. There could be different stuff i want to include like accounts, pro plays, warmup routines, that would benefit from a less populated valorant page. I think having this structure makes gives me more breathing room in each page to add more content since everything is not mashed together

I BEG YOU TO DITCH THE MUSIC! Whilst I am very grateful for the time and effort you put in to producing your content, I would so grateful if you would turn off the terrible discordant quasi-jazz music with the annoying click-click-click of the fake snare drum. It has certainly put me off watching your materials as regularly as I watch others - hence I have not yet subscribed.
I want to listen to your voice, concentrate upon what you are saying and assimilate that. Very often the pattern of your speech is at odds with tempo and/or percussive pattern of the 'music', and I find it hard to follow what you are saying.
Also - I know I am pushing my luck here :-), please dump the text overlays and images wandering around the screen.
Could you imagine someone trying to explain something to you and they put annoying (to you) music on in the background as they begin to speak, and then as they draw something for you on a pad to explain themselves, they start waving the pad all over the place LOL
I know video production styles on UA-cam go around in waves, and this discordant piano soundtrack is on lots of videos, but it adds nothing to the actual product. Many of the folks I regularly watch and most learn from are those (like Brian Jenks) who speak clearly, show clear full images (not snips moving too fast to focus upon), and take the time to explain what they are showing on screen and why. There are no stylized gimmicks.
Your content is great on its own. Please dump all the silly 'production value' nonsense :-)

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  2 роки тому

Thank you for the constructive feedback :) After checking the audio levels I definitely see it being too strong, but from an objective outlook there have been significantly more comments enjoying the music, and only around 2 so far (including yours) preferring for it to be removed. I personally find it a bit too plain without anything in the background, but in my next video, I've turned it down to around -40db so it's only noticeable during gaps in speaking, and I'll continue experimenting with the levels in my future videos as well.
As shaking goes, yeah that's just on me to find something more friendly for more educational content, are you saying gradual pans/zooms that try to emphasize certain parts of an image are also distracting, or is it just the shaking for transition texts and overlay images?
It's too late to re-edit my latest videos, but I'll work on gradually prioritizing educational value and clarity over my current channel aesthetic. As you said, the UA-camrs I regularly watch keep their videos simple, it's just a matter of me properly catering to my audience.

@@itsjohnmavrick Hi John, Many thanks for your thoughtful response to my comment, and I am glad it read as constructive feedback. Out of respect for the time and attention you took to reply I will gladly subscribe and see how your production develops over time - not to mention enjoy and learn from your content.
I knew there would be many who would say they like the music LOL. I must ask some friends to comment and try and get the number of complainers up from 2. LOL
To be fair to you, I should admit that I am speaking from a position of years of audio production and teaching experience, but also I am only too aware that I do have a dislike of jazzy-style piano pieces (particularly that discordant style), and those you have used on the four videos I had watched to date are the same pieces used on a number of UA-cam channels I subscribe to, and I am sick of hearing them. :-)
The problem that can arise is when the tempo, rhythm and/or pattern of a percussive instrument clashes with the pattern of speech or the series of syllables spoken; as if both are in a different time signature. This can pull the listener's attention away from the spoken word as their brain tries to unscramble the crossover beats. That is what I experience.
I also am aware that the right music can help (carry) viewers' attention and help them absorb and retain information, where too much audible space can make their mind drift.
I look forward to your future productions.
The 'shaking' I commented on was mainly the transitional caption segments. It registered with me as an unnecessary gimmick, rather than felt it added to the value of the content, and I found it hard on my eyes.
The pans and zooms were too fast for me, and gave me no time to read what you had zoomed in upon. They were more a glimpse than a focus, almost coming across as "I am referring to this in my dialogue/script, so I quickly need to show an image of it/zoom in to that section.
I do appreciate that you'll give thought to this going forward, and I am sure that as your audience grows, and your presentations develop, you will find a style and production aesthetic that works well.
Thanks again for engaging with me on this.

@@colinbrookes8625 haha thank you :) my new video is probably redundant for you but I am planning on expanding my topics covered on the channel just for creative freedom so maybe you can check out one of those.
It is nice to hear feedback from someone more qualified in audio production, as I never really thought about the conflict between the time signatures. When watching my videos I'm already familiar with the contents and my voice so it might be easy for me to follow along, but new viewers probably have difficulty. Would you say there's a more commentary-friendly style of music that can be substituted? Or is it just best practice to not have anything at all?
Out of curiosity, where do you hear these songs? I've only came across these anime lofi beats once on a different channel, unless you're referring to the general music style.
I made the text shake barely noticeable for future transitions, and my new video will be more slow-paced. You are spot on with my ideology for visuals as I mainly have my scripts and voiceover as the main priority with visuals as a secondary, but I'm working on improving my real-time teaching and elaboration skills as if I'm casually teaching or discussing something. I'm also unsure on what the average reading time is, and assume that people can pause if they want to see something, which I should probably rethink. Lastly, I have a personal assumption of how if I spend too much time on something my target audience of people brainwashed by tiktok video durations will click off, but that's something I'll need to continue tinkering around with seeing as I've mainly stayed consistent with my video style.
I appreciate all the insights and the wake-up call, I'll make sure to keep experimenting for future content thanks to you :)
      PS: Any video suggestions? haha

@@itsjohnmavrick I'll certainly keep watching your videos, and it will be interesting to see other content for sure, although I am heavily focused up Obsidian for the next few months as I transition my PKM over from TheBrain (after 14 years of use and development!).
Being familiar with your own content: will naturally lead you to speaking faster than is ideal. We always advised someone to speak as if explaining something to a friend who is fascinated by what you are talking about. You have their full attention, are comfortable in your manner, but will naturally slow your speed and tempo, and emphasis more; which we do when explaining rather than presenting.
Re: commentary-friendly style of music. This is a subject that we cannot productively discuss here in the comments :-(
It is an important aspect of video production, and can really enhance the spoken and visual content, as you are already aware.
There is material online on this subject, but its one to 'study' and not resolve quickly. After all, its [audio] psychology; a science of its own.
Bottom line, a backing track can add a mood or [trademark] style to your videos. It can aid content to make you think, but rarely enhance material you wish to learn and retain.
Broad conceptual content can be enhanced by music. Specific and factual instruction not so much.
Do you want to share what you are passionate about? Teach and help folks do what you have found to be beneficial? Build a monetized channel, a brand, become a personality, entertainer etc. etc.?
When we know the 'why' the rest tends to follow :-)
Re: scripted or real-time voice-over. 99% of folks have to start with scripted. Few can speak off the top of their head on any subject they are teaching cold, even more so to a microphone, on your own :-)
Keep doing what you are doing and you will naturally move to just a crib sheet of content points (although I think you have been doing this on some videos maybe?). The colour and rhythm of your voice will find its flow.
Re: Average reading time. Get four friends or relatives to read something off your video graphics out loud to you. Get a feel for how quickly they read on-screen text.
Not everyone will be an absolute beginner or an expert. So allow for a cross-section of viewers. I watch channels where I know far more than the presenter, but I watch their content because I love the subject matter and 'like' them as a person and 'their way' of talking about it.
Try and find folks who can offer feedback [offline] on your videos period. Its amazing how quickly things fall into place and find their groove, when a 'conversation' rather than a 'critique' is involved in production.
Re: pausing videos. I can only speak for myself here. I don't want to have to pause a video because things are going too fast to comfortably consume. But I am happy to pause if something catches my eye and I want to focus on it because the voice-over doesn't.
Re: assumption your target audience have little attention span.
I guess I'd have to know why you are making videos and your ambitions for your channel to comment further on that.
I just took time out to watch a selection of your other videos (I had only watched Obsidian content) and you are a natural at scripting, editing and voicing video content. YOU'RE REALLY GOOD!
Who you make videos for can decide the style and content, but from where I stand you already have a very strong style, and more than enough to gather your own audience over time. Jumping subjects will not build a large audience, based upon UA-cam stats. But jumping subjects will speed up your learning process and help you find what content most engages you as a creator.
This is a whole conversation in and of itself, and my 'comment' replies are getting longer and longer LOL.
I have really enjoyed this exchange, and if it would be of any value to you, I would be very happy to engage outside of the channel to discuss further.
I will think on video suggestions when I have consumed a lot more of your videos :-)
Keep doing what you're doing John!

@@colinbrookes8625 What made you want to switch, and how's the transition so far? I couldn't tell if TheBrain also stored files in markdown.
I do want to start another phase of self-enlightenment on Obsidian, so I don't think those videos will be ending anytime soon as I feel like there's so much untapped potential and regrets I wish to amend :p
Yeah that's a good point for proper speaking speed, I find that I can sufficiently explain the stuff highlighted in my outline, but then as soon as I try elaborating or showing examples I end up breaking consistency and blanking out haha
I did a surface level google search for "best music for educational/commentary videos" and couldn't find much, and you do have a point with music's thought-provoking uses, it's just something I'll have to learn to use properly depending on the type of video I guess, especially if I try to mix both tutorials and concepts. There's a lot of different approaches to content creation, and I guess I'm in the limbo between wanting to provide tutorials but to also share my personal insights and reflections at the same time as I repurpose already known content, if that run-on makes any sense.
I only use points on tutorial portions where I showcase how to do certain things in Obsidian, whenever I do the quick pans its almost always scripts Interesting how you bring in color, I'll have to make some obsidian notes on that i gues hehe
Yeah I haven't really asked for feedback as content creation has usually been a personal creative outlet of mine; I should probably start consulting with friends and other UA-camrs.
Thank you for the kind words :) The school one you commented on is something I would love to start making more of, just experiential but informative videos, but I'll still have to find out how to properly market them to still be liked by the youtube algorithm. From note taking to productivity to university life to coding to psychology/philosophy, I consume a lot of media and would like to start repurposing it into my videos, adding my own flair, something to be proud of and view my journey in life as I look back at a later date.
i really do appreciate all the insight and for responding with these packed replies, i'm not sure what you get out of this but I'd be happy to continue :) what form of communication would work best for you? I'm fine with email (ransomguest@gmail.com), discord (Ran#9526), idk what else is out there tbh
