I want to discuss overemployment today and if it's a good idea. If you're unfamiliar with the term "overemployment," it refers to a problematic practice that many software developers are now engaging in.

I don't believe John actually thinks that most people can just start their own business just like that. "Its so easy, just start a business. Okay, cool. Great business started, I'm a millionaire now, thanks John!" Over employment is how people can take advantage of a corrupt system to get something out of it for themselves. Don't discourage that.

@@simpleprogrammer You don't seem to realize that 90% of all businesses fail after 5 years. I haven't heard of 90% of overemployed workers fail after 5 years.

It is VERY challenging to build a business that turns a profit; I would know since I spent 3 years launching a "startup" couldn't find a single customer. It is easier to interview for tech jobs at already lucrative companies and work there, I hate when people give the advice of "go start a business". A job or contract guarantees income the moment you start work, a business is isn't guaranteed to make you a dime especially if you aren't a sales person.

Here’s the thing, starting a company has much more risk and liability than overemployment. Not that starting a business is bad, just not apples to apples.

Isnt it odd that we entrepreneurs preach working hard and then when we take on multiple jobs this is the reaction? This is why pips exist for a reason!

Heck yes we should do it! These companies aren’t even trying to pay you a living wage. Before Covid no one ever had a problem with somebody working two or more jobs. I fully plan on working two jobs.

What if a person doesn't want to have their own business? Wouldn't you still be over-employed by having a 9-5 and your own business? Isn't overemployment the goal of every entrepreneur? Isn't that what multiple income streams is?
I don't get the criticism of a person having multiple jobs (they don't own) vs having multiple jobs (they do own). Both require time management, planning and dedication to do correctly.

I do agree working 2nd job may be ok, but it definitely impacts the quality on 1st, whether the employer can tell or not depends on your quality, lot of times it maybe good enough, but I do feel like you can't do as good of a job if you work more than 1 job. It's just how it is. Do you agree?

No problem at all. Employees are required to give a 2 week notice before leaving the company if they want a reference, but companies are still not required to give 2 week notice before firing you. No remorse. OE has always been around. Difference is that now with the technology the way it is, we can be OE from home.

That's the same place where I landed too. OE can work for some, but I just took the excess time and put it into my indie game studio. I'm going to release my first game this year.
