He sings about the marginalized people's life's and you hear the pain in his voice about their suffering.

Being from Southeast Kentucky, I can tell you this is 150% RAW and REAL.
Coming from 3 generations of coal miners from Leslie, Perry, and Harlan Counties, here's how I take the meaning:
So basically his dad was a miner, and more than likely the mine caved in with him in it, crushed his back and is now going to a pain clinic and taking percocet to just be able to get out of bed. Hes also burned bridges in the family and his addiction is ripping his family apart. Hes telling Tyler to stay focused and dont follow his path with percocet addiction, but it's too late. He is battling his own demons and he cant find work ( basically feels hopeless ) His other song Hard Times kinda ties in with this.....or at least that's my opinion.

    His name is pronounced Chill-ders.
I'm from Pike Co, (Eastern) Ky.
All my family are coal miners. There is no more Coal stores to spend their money.
The Opioid epidemic is absolutely everywhere but, it's CRITICAL there where the Western part of the state line of Williamson, W. VA borders the Ky line. When you say you're going to town; you're Williamson, W.Va.
There is NOTHING other than the Coal Mines for a profitable job considering the coal mining is dwindling there.
He's referring to his Dad's back because his Dad became addicted to prescription medication from his back injury he got working in the coal mines!!
Please check out some more of songs; he was just nominated for a Grammy for his new album!!
"Follow you to Virgie " is another part of Pikeville, Ky.
That's where I lived when my husband followed me from Richmond, Va over thirty years ago!

If you watch some of Tyler's interviews he also doesn't like pop country. One time talking about it he said "boys we can't solo cup and pickup truck it to death". They asked him why he didn't live in Nashville and he said "I write music about rural life why the hell would I live in Nashville?" I use to hate country too until I found him and Sturgill.

for someone that enjoys tyler childers, his cover of pink floyd's "time" is a must listen, maybe not review worthy with the availability of videos but worth a listen for sure

Nice! That's one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. I'd love to listen to his cover. Thank you for that!

So maybe reading into the lyrics a little but talking about his dad hurting his back I concluded his dad is addicted or was addicted to opioids due to his back injury. So its coming from a place of experience of pills and burning bridges

You need to check out Chris Stapleton singing" I was wrong Live version" or "Tennessee Whisky". He is an amazing county singer but also very soulful.

Good stuff man... Tyler is the truth. Just a FYI he pronounces his name “Chill-ders”. For more of a stripped down sound like this check out “Hard Times”. With something with his band and a more full sound check out “Feathered Indians”. Or bet yet... check out both! Enjoy your ride down the Tyler Childers rabbit hole, it’s a fun little ride... I’ll subscribe to see if you keep going with Tyler, Sturgill, Colter Wall, Turnpike Troubadour’s, and a whole bunch more in this non-pop country slice of heaven.

Check out "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive", another eastern Kentucky coal mine song. Melancholy, with heavy Irish/bluegrass influence. It was part of most season finales for the series "Justified". As someone who grew up in the area, the song is devastatingly beautiful. The version from Patty Loveless is far superior to others IMO.

I concur with J P. He does Harlan Road but intros it with a cover of time by pink floyd and it's cool as hell.

Tyler Childers has become one of my favorites. Check out some kip Moore, he's always been a favorite. He definitely goes against the pop country bullshit lol. ua-cam.com/video/25lKxO3GeQA/v-deo.html

If you like this type of country you need to check out Cody Jinks or Whiskey Myers both awesome artists out of the Texas music scene nowhere close to mainstream.

It looks like you have some folks steering you right. Sturgill and Tyler are a couple of the young guns. Colter Wall is in your future, and then some Jason Isbell...
and In time... Townes and Guy. ua-cam.com/video/3NKI-kYKl1o/v-deo.html
