They all are they just don't know it.. I've rode bike for more than 39 years splitting lanes going fast you want to go fast go to a track. I lost to many friends to speed, slitting lanes that are all just bad Ideas.. But you can't tell them that till it's to late.. Than there family is picking up the cost of what they did because insurance will not pay for being a dumbass.. Thinking it's just a little law who cares..

Generally, motorcyclists assume responsibility for an accident caused while filtering or lane-splitting, unless of course, someone intentionally tries to block or cut them off. Hard to say when a motorcyclist is proceeding at a reasonable speed and the motorist just merges over in front of them without warning. In California, it's reasonable to assume there are lane-splitting motorcyclists present at all times, since it is legal there.

When traffic flow is stop and go, lane splitting can be safe, even at higher speeds, but once gaps start opening up in either one of the lanes being split, or if one lane is going faster than another, then I always slow it down to a crawl - too many careless drivers will quickly try and hop over to a faster lane.
When riding (or even driving for that matter), I always try to stay out of a vehicle's blind spot; a rider is just begging to be decked if you ride for long in the blind spot. Either speed it up or slow it down, as conditions dictate.
You use your common sense and intelligence when there's no law about it. But we all know it's extremely dangerous, that's why there are laws prohibiting it. BOTH cannot enter that lane over a double yellow line.

I think it stems from bicycle experience as kids and “advice” from Uncle Bob who last rode a motorbike in1963.

3:48 had nothing to do with speed. He's in hov, no one should be changing lanes there. It's double yellow followed by a solid white line. That's a no lane change area.
Even still as a rider that's more vulnerable you shouldn't be going that fast, especially when you know some people are reckless when they drive
it genuinely gives me a sick feeling in my guts when i see a bike accident, but i still watch 'em to give me a reality check what's possible & stop me getting complacent, coz it's sometime easy to get carried away, but having said that you can't fix stupid as so many demonstrate, and the route cause of most incidents is speed. Not sure if it's even legal (in CA) for the motorcycle to lane filter for the same reason. My take? All vehicles should stick to their lanes in that scenario

Who is at fault is always an easy one. Some people try to mistakenly pretend that there is some magical space between lanes, due to some lanes having a painted line that is a few inches wide merely to make it easier to see, but there is no magical space, there is only one lane, next to another lane.
Thus, whether you think lane splitting or filtering somehow changes this fact or not, that does not matter. You are technically in one or the other lane. While in that lane, if you attempt to pass someone else in that lane, they have right of way. If someone tries to pass you in the same lane, you have right of way.
It does not matter if the vehicle in front, chooses to use their entire lane edge to edge because that is what a lane is, the edges of the boundary within which a vehicle is allowed to travel. Someone ahead of you is not cutting you off if you are in their lane, behind them. IF you instead, make it into the other lane, and are obeying the speed limit not some fast overtaking, and then a vehicle in the adjacent lane crosses over into your lane, where you had right of way because you were already in that lane at the same spot, then the vehicle changing lanes is at fault.
The thing is, not getting into the accident at all, beats having one happen then trying to place blame. Both bikers and cagers make mistakes and always will.

The overtaking car coming in the opposite direction scenario took me back to when it happened to me. Left me about two foot of gravel covered road in the gutter. Still frightens me to death when I think about it. An 140 mph head on collision!!!

3:22 - Lane-splitting on the double-yellow or any solid lines that separate the carpool lane is illegal. Crossing any solid lines into and out of the carpool lane is illegal as well, whether they are white or yellow. 50/50 - both the biker and the car did things that directly contributed to the accident.
You can 100% split on those lines. You'll never be cited for doing what she was doing.

5:50, They know **** good and well that they were breaking the speed limit. It's one thing for a quiet vehicle to sneak by doing that, one at a time all day long if they aren't going super fast, but when you have a caravan of loud(ish) motorcycles, enough people notice that you get on the radar of a complainer, so don't expect to get away with it without annoying the residents.
At the same time, it is fair to tell someone who uses the "children playing" line, that they should keep their kids out of the street like any non-negligent parent would, and if they feel like calling the police, then it is only reasonable to report them to child services for endangering their children.

The lane filtering is confusing. I don't know if it was even legal for the car to change lanes, and I don't know if it was legal for them to lane split. All I know is they were definitely lane splitting too fast, so it should always be expected that other motorists can't see you at first, or completely miscalculate the timing because of how quickly you're moving. Either way, it feels like both the motorcyclist and the other motorists are kind of both at fault
It's100% legal to split like she was, it's100% illegal to cross solid lines like the car did.

Lane splitting is always dangerous. More so at high speeds. But most riders are everything else except sensible.
In response to the question asked regarding lane splitting and fault ..... Its 💯 percent the bikers fault being California is the ONLY state lane splitting is legal in the states.

Lane splitting is ok, lane filtering should be illegal. When traffic is in motion, it’s too common for cars to change lanes, trying to ahead. Yes, they should look before changing lanes. But too many drivers don’t see motorcycles already. It’s way too easy for this kind of accident to occur. Cars lined up at the stoplight? Go right ahead, if you have the room.

Definitely the car was at fault, crossing over a double yellow to get to the HOV/Fast Pass/Whatever lane difference that was is still a double yellow line, and should be treated as such.
Motorcycles are not allowed to lane split on double yellow lines either. So the biker is at fault too. No vehicle on the road is allowed to pass over double yellow. Since when did people start thinking motorcycles have a special privilege to break the laws, cause accidents, and then blame other motorists? Furthermore she was going too fast
@@ItsmeBish584 When you're making a lane change, it is your responsibility to make sure you have room, and it is safe to do so, regardless of whether or not the motorcycle was breaking the law, the car clearly didn't check where they were going and just assumed it was safe to merge, which it obviously wasn't. They more than likely both received tickets, but as a backseat driver, It would appear that more of the blame falls on the car than the motorcycle. This happens to me all day in my car. People will just turn on the blinker (If they do at all) and just start coming into my lane, A blinker is asking for permission, it is not an automatic i get to go where i want switch. Also, I don't even ride a motorcycle, but I have friends who do, and I am sure you do too, which is just one more reason to double check before making that lane change.

Can you lane split in USA?
Only California directly permits lane splitting. Several other states do not allow lane splitting but allow similar behaviors such as lane filtering. Arizona, Montana, and Utah permit lane filtering in a limited number of situations and Hawaii allows shoulder surfing.
