In the chorus, "Have we left the answers..." the chord progression actually starts in F Major and does not go to E minor but actually to C Major with E in the bass, then the bass stays on E as a pedal as we get D Major to E minor on "far behind".

For Kansas the proggier tunes I’d recommend: Miracles out of Nowhere, Mysteries and Mayhem/The pinnacle, Musicattio, lamplight symphony, Hopelessly Human, Apercu/Death of Mother Nature Suite, and Angels have Fallen.
Also check out the Proto Kaw song Nevermore. Kerry and his earlier Kansas band made some great songs in the 2000s when they reassembled.

That's neat that you are discovering this just now. My friends and I were massive fans of it in college in 1982. While not as strong musically as other Kansas albums, the writing is tremendous. As I write this, I can see my car out the window and I have that CD in it. It brings back good college memories. Love what you do, BTW.

Robby Steinhardt (Violin, vocals) left after "Vinyl Confessions" tour. They released one more album with Elefante "Drastic Measures" and did a 32 show tour last show being on 11/3/83. Being a Kansas fan since 1975, I was sad to find out that they had dissolved, not just taking a hiatus in order for members to recharge, pursue other endeavors, they were history. Walsh had started his own band, Streets, and had put out a couple of albums and toured hard but they tanked for a number of reasons and my perception is that costs of recording, touring, etc. overran revenue. As a matter of fact, Walsh invested most of his personal $$ in this effort only to see it fail, a whole 'nother story. Livgren and Hope moved on into the burgeoning "Contemporary Christian Music" market and arena with their new band "Kerry Livgren AD" and put out a couple of albums and toured but this effort also just kind of died on the vine. Hope went on and became an Ordained Minister in the Episcopal Church and Kerry Livgren bought a farm, built a recording studio in his barn and started his own record label "Numavox" and has put out quite a bit of solo stuff on Numavox over the ensuing years. Back to Kansas......in about 1985 Ehart, Walsh and Williams converged and decided to resurrect Kansas from the tombs of music history. After agreeing to re-start the band there were a few glaring deficits such as bass, lead guitar, violin, another strong song writer to augment Walsh. Walsh provided the bass player from his defunct "Streets" band Billy Greer who also is a heck of a singer in his own right. Around this time, Phil Ehart was at some sort of huge function, I think maybe it was a music festival or a concert and he happened to bump into Steve Morse a talented songwriter/composer (Dregs, Steve Morse Band, and voted in Guitar Player Magazine's annual poll "Guitar Player of the Year" for 5 consecutive years) and they shot the breeze for a minute. Ehart told Morse that they were in the process of relaunching KANSAS band and offhandedly suggested maybe he would like to come aboard and to his delight Morse took him up on it. 1986 KANSAS released the "Power" album and the band consisted of Williams (guitar), Ehart (drums), Walsh (Keys, lead vocals, keyboard handstands lol), Greer (bass), Morse (lead guitar). In lieu of a violinist, Morse covered the classic Steinhardt violin parts with his incredible guitar abilities and actually learned to play Dust in the Wind on a violin to preserve it's integrity when played live. I caught this incarnation of KANSAS live in 1984 in San Diego on the USO Tour and it was a killer show. Fast forward to the here and now and KANSAS is still playing up to 100 shows a year with original members Williams and Ehart along with long time member Greer and violinist extraordinaire David Ragsdale, acclaimed keyboardist and writer Tom Brislin (Yes, Meatloaf, You Were Spiraling) and on lead vocals and keyboards a Chicago area blue collar truck driver and rock singer whenever possible and veteran of a brief stint with Shooting Star Ronnie Platt. During the past 6 years or so years they have released 2 acclaimed studio albums that really were true to KANSAS' American prog-rock legacy and just outstanding music, 2016's effort "The Prelude Implicit" (Billboard: #5 on Rock Chart; #6 for Physical Albums; Top 200) and 2020's "Absence of Presence" (Billboard: #4 Current Rock Albums; #5 for Internet Albums; #10 for Billboard Top Albums; #10 for Top Current Albums), you really should give both of these a listen, you will be pleasantly surprised. Also, released 2 live albums "Leftoverture Live and Beyond" and "Point of Know Return 40th Anniversary". I caught both shows and they were just incredible. Also, go see them live, they are awesome, still have their impeccable chops and out there loving what they do.

Also, Kansas has some great Spin-off groups worth a listen, including the aforementioned Streets and AD, Native Window, Proto-Kaw (featuring pre-Walsh lead singer Lynn Meredith), and John Elefante's Mastedon (a power-rock group with some really good tunes, some of which are VERY Kansas).

@@keithbk for sure bro. Also, a connection to "Streets" is Billy Greer's "Seventh Key" with one of the most underrated guitarists ever Mike Slamer. I would throw in Steve Walsh's solo efforts besides "Schemer-Dreamer", "Glossalalia" with Mike Slamer on guitar, "Shadowman" with Joel Kosche of Collective Soul fame on guitars and more recently 2017's "Black Butterfly" with Jerome Mazza of a very KANSAS-esque band "Pinnacle Point" on vocals as well. All of it great stuff to get lost in lol.

It's funny, I must have been around 9 years old when this came out. I'm not sure if I heard this at the time. But later, when I as a GDR-born child discovered the English language, the words "Chasing Shadows" came to my mind. And I never could link anything to them. I'm still not sure if I heard this song before this video. But it sounds somewhat familiar to me.
I don't care about their spiritual direction. I think this is a beautiful song with a lot of meaning for anyone seeking for a something in their lives. And now the lines in the chorus make sense. We all are chasing shadows in the night.
Of course, everybody knows "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry on, Wayward Son" from them, so my 15-year-old daughter does. I think their songs had always something to tell. I think, "Chasing Shadows" carries some mystical content with it. And with this, E-Minor makes a lot of sense.
In the end, the song is great. And maybe one day I find out, why those two words follow me through my whole life.

A few things. As a lifelong Kansas fan, their music, almost from the very beginning, has a christian theme. In the song "The answers far behind" is the belief in the bible and how man has strayed. John Elephante is also a born again christian. Chasing Shadows was his attempt at the Kerry Livgren way of writing. Kerry wrote almost all Kansas music before this album. John wrote the majority of this album and Drastic Measures album which right after Dave Hope and Kerry Livgren left the band. This is the first Kansas album that I didn't like every song. The song "Andi" was the signal that Kansas, as we knew it, was coming to an end. Broke my heart. I was a fan from the beginning.

    • @KidsOnCampus2
      @KidsOnCampus2 2 роки тому +2

John Elefante definitely did not write the majority of this album. Drastic Measure for sure, but here he only co-wrote three (with his brother Dino) out of ten songs ("Right Away," "Chasing Shadows" and "Face It") and co-wrote "Play On" with Kerry Livgren. Kerry wrote five and also co-wrote "Play the Game Tonight" (which was actually a revised version of a song titled "Stay With Me Tonight" by two outside songwriters). I too, was very disappointed in Drastic Measures upon release. "Andi" definitely was the nadir of the band. Too bad, because "Perfect Lover" (from which was recorded by the Elefante brothers with Rich Williams and Phil Ehart, was a great song!

  • @boozefueledreviews6928
    @boozefueledreviews6928 2 роки тому +1

Kerry Livgren had become very open about his born again Christianity. It was one of the reasons why Steve Walsh left the band, as he just wanted to be in a rock band and not have so many hidden meanings. Bassist Dave Hope at this time had also become born again, and new vocalist John was already born again!
Many, if not all of the songs on this record and the next, were steeped in religious undertones... but both of the John Elefante albums had some amazing tracks!
They broke up in 1984 and returned in 1986 with Steve Walsh back on vocals... and it was a pure pop/rock Kansas. Kerry Livgren was gone, never to return until their reunion album in 2000.

@Mark Scutti. If you examine Kerry's pre-Christian lyrics & read his first autobiography "Seeds of Change," you will discover that during all that time he was deeply studying philosophy books all FAR from Christian. For example, look at the lyrics from Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman from the album Song for America which reflect Eastern religious philosophy (reincarnation, etc.).
Kerry was into an obscure religion called Urantia at the time (1979) that he had an encounter with Jesus Christ in a motel room while on tour. He instantly gave his life to Christ and has never looked back. That's when he started writing Christian lyrics. In fact, his first Christian song was the lead-off on the album AudioVisions, "Relentless."
      See you in Heaven Kerry!!

Agreed. I've been into Kansas since about 1975 or so and their first 5 studio albums are all awesome and essential must haves for me but with Monolith and Audio Visions they started to lose me a bit as it seemed over all the writing wasn't as strong and the recording quality seemed a bit lower quality or rushed at times, although there are cuts I love on both albums. But when Steve Walsh left and the albums Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures came out I couldn't get into them at all. Since then with the various regroupings it's been a bit of a roller coaster with occasional high points that would get me excited but also a lot of "filler" songs that weren't "bad" but to me were fairly forgettable. Actually their most recent The Absence of Presence from 2020 is one of their most solid albums in a long time I think. 👍

Great song. I've been a huge fan of Kansas since I was in high school (which started in '95, so still a relative late-comer to Kansas' discography). Kerry Livgren's career is varied and definitely worth following, even if you're not particularly fond of Christianity or Christian music. This album definitely alienated some fans who loved the spiritual searching in their lyrics but didn't appreciate landing on the answers they had found. By Elefante's second album, Livgren had grown disillusioned with the music industry in general, who were pushing them away from their prog rock roots to a more 80's sound, which inspired the song Mainstream. But Livgren also became increasingly uncomfortable with using Kansas as his outlet to spread Christianity, so he left the band to do some solo recording (and eventually formed the new Christian prog rock band A.D.). But even though his solo work was still overtly Christian, Livgren was so well known and well respected as a musician and songwriter that he got some big names to guest on his first solo album, including Ronny James Dio lending vocals to one or two of the songs.

@@michaelbaucom4019Neither album was as "prog" as they could have been, considering Morse's (and Walsh's) compositional capabilities (which, for the former, manifested nicely on the Flying Colors & some of his solo / SMB albums) ... But, arena rock was "king" at the time; Even the Hackett / Howe "GTR" album was disappointing in terms of it's potential artistry. Personally, I thought the orchestral arrangements (Andrew Powell, the producer, was a composer who did most of the string arrangements) on "Power" more than made up for the lack of violin solos. Also, "Spirit" was about half written by outside songwriters - allegedly at the record company's insistence (?) - So I don't think it could fairly be called a "Steve Morse" album (which is probably why he departed shortly thereafter).

Check out their first 5 studio albums, all fantastic stuff! 🥳 Here's some recommended cuts (my personal favorites) to try out from each album (or just buy each album, one every few months, and listen the heck out of them! 😎👍):
1 Kansas: "Can I Tell You", "Journey from Mariabronn", "Apercu / Death of Mother Nature Suite"
2 Song For America: "Song for America", "Lamplight Symphony", "The Devil Game", "Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman"
3 Masque: "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", "Child of Innocence", "Mysteries and Mayhem / The Pinnacle"
4 Leftoverture: "The Wall", "Miracles Out of Nowhere", "Opus Insert", "Cheyenne Anthem", "Magnum Opus"
5 Point of Know Return: "The Spider / Portrait (He Knew)", "Closet Chronicles", "Nobody's Home", "Hopelessly Human"
      ENJOY!

The "Kansas" purists hate everything post-Walsh, but I think this is a great album, especially the songs on Side 2. The final track, "Crossfire", is overtly Christian, but is quintessential "Kansas" with fantastic guitar & violin arrangement. I highly recommend "Crossfire", "Child of Innocence", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".

Vinyl Confessions is a very good/great album, John Elefante's songs were up to Kerry Livgren's songs. This song was his best contribution to Kansas(save maybe Fight Fire With Fire from Drastic Measures, a disappointing album). As our host noted, great vocals are a Kansas staple

This should have been the "Dust in the Wind" of the 1980s but I think many fans gave up on Kansas once Steve Walsh left and never really gave John Elefante a chance. Plus, the religious connotations became more overt...and people didn't like that.

Just so you know, John Elefante, Kerry Livgren, and Dave Hope were born again believers. Kerry did an album called Seeds Of Change which is excellent and has a lot of secular singers singing Kerry's songs! Also when Kerry and Dave left Kansas they formed a band called AD which is amazing music, please react to Time Line and Art Of The State albums! No one knows about AD because its a christian group. I know about them because i followed what Kerry and Dave did after Kansas!

One of a number of very American rock bands emerging in the 70s that are super-proficient, very polished and honed, smooth and tight, and for me devoid of anything sonically appealing or remotely interesting. Just taking from the classic rock pattern-book. Usual high-pitched male vocal harmonies, etc. Crafted for arenas, anthemic power-ballads, sing-a-long with this bit, here's the staccato instrumental bit, a minor chord, a solo, and the big finish. Yawnsville.

Definitely not one of Kansas' better songs. In fact, it's rather weak. They have so many prog masterpieces that could have been chosen. This DOES NOT sound like classic Kansas. In fact it is one of Kansas' worst albums, primarily because Kerry Livgren, the master composer, didn't write most of the songs on this album, and he was about to leave the band to start another, AD, so his heart just wasn't in it.
One bit of information that may help explain the meaning behind the lyrics is that the brothers, John & Dino Elefante, who wrote the song are both also evangelical Christians. And John took on vocal duties for a very short period of time before Steve Walsh returned.
No offense intended Pedro (to each his own), but Kansas happens to be my favorite band by far & away, and I know them & their music very well. Doug, please don't allow this song to influence your thinking about the band.
Kerry Livgren is a masterful composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist. Hence his nickname, "The Maestro."
This song doesn't sound like classic Kansas at all. Please take some time of your own and listen to the albums Song for America, Masque, and Leftoverture. You'll be floored by the incredible Livgren-penned progressive, classically influenced masterpieces that are representative of the true Kansas sound!
By the way, the highlight of this song musically is the piano work of Kerry Livgren.
