Tiny Off Grid Cabin Full Build

- Almost four years ago we had no idea we would be starting a You Tube channel. We took photos of our off grid cabin build but we don't have any video. We still wanted to share with you the building process because we get this question all the time. "How did you build your cabin?" We chose this particular build because it was fast and easy. We've made some changes over time to suit our needs but the basic cabin structure is the same. The size of the cabin is 16x24 for the main portion making it 350 sq ft. It has an 8 foot enclosed front porch and an 8 foot back lean to.

I'm a Yooper who's been transplanted all over the world. I'm leaving the military in a few weeks and moving back home. Something like this is my DREAM...if only I could find a good piece of land! Great work.
Thank you!! There are so many beautiful places in the UP!! We love everything about the UP! And we sincerely THANK YOU for your service!!!
“It spoke to me”. That’s when you know. Love it
Absolutely!!! Thanks for watching
We think your cabin/ barndominium is idealistic and quaint. We absolutely love it! It reminds us of the 70's-80's. When people built smaller styled houses to reside in. Yet, they had the acreage to enjoy. Perfect lifestyle! Happy Holidays & God bless!
Thank you, we’re really loving this lifestyle!
Y'all are living the dream. I believe 80% of the population would trade places w/ you. I would!
We feel like it, thanks for watching!
As a downstate Michigander with quiet cabin dreams, I sure appreciate your channel. Thanks for sharing the journey.😊
Thanks for watching.. follow your dreams, it’s worth it!
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet great advice!
This is so much better WITHOUT video! It is wonderful to see the progress and have someone EXPLAIN it and TELL THE STORY, instead of depending on video editing to tell the story. New sub here and of course liked it!
Thank you so much the comment! It was all we had since we never dreamed of doing UA-cam when we started this journey. Thanks for joining us!!
Beautiful cabin. Hopefully this video will bring you over 1000.
Thank you and thanks for the encouragement!!
Cute, functional cabin.
Thank you! My wife is currently drooling over your moose videos, it has been a dream of hers
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet Thank you, I have gotten lucky a few times.
Thanks for the affirmation on the lifestyle change. Looks wonderful ... looking to do the same basic setup here in NE Ohio.
Wish you all the best!! Definitely worth it for us. Thanks for watching!!
Looks great!!! Not fake and pretentious, looks like nice home.
Thank you!! We try to be honest and transparent
The outhouse is my favorite. It certainly beats my "find a log" system. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely! We had a little box in the white pines for the first few months, beautiful when it’s nice out, sucks in the rain. Thanks for watching!
What a quaint place! Like how you got the boys help! Pizza and cash got them going. I'm sure they would have helped regardless. Cash speaks to people. I have two properties in Missouri with cabins on them. It's my retreat from the grind of every day life. God Bless, this is living! Eh
Thanks. After always hating to leave we decided not to and stayed
THIS IS MY FAVORITE BUILD!!! If I could get somebody to build that for me, I'd be tickled pink!! God bless you! Thanks
Thank you for watching and thanks for encouragement!
Love the kitchen!! Color is is perfect out there!! Cheers!! J & C
The kitchen is our favorite part also! Thanks for watching. 😊
Looking good!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Very Nice, Thank you!!!!!
Thank you!! And thanks for watching!
That's a cozy cabin you've built for yourself and your wife. I like it. You could put a small woodburning stove in the outhouse that's what I did for my cabin property. Isn't it great to overcome the mindset of thinking you need a lot of stuff or a large home to live comfortably and be happy. Great video thanks for sharing it.
Thank for watching, we usually put the buddy heater in thee after deer season
Shack in the woods. Love it!
Thank you!
That out house is nice. Thanks for the video.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Good job brother. looks nice 👍

Thanks!! Miss you guys!
I love this!
Thank you!
Well done, from California 😊😊
Thank you!
New Subs here. It's a beautiful cabin/barndominium/tiny home. I have been looking for an acre or two land for my future retirement. I didn't realize MI has such beautiful trees and fall foliage. I've never been to MI before.
Always loved the variety of trees in Michigan, thanks for the sub!!!
Great Job Y'all 👍🏼
God Bless You and your family my friend. 🙏❤️
THANK YOU!! And thanks for watching
Wonderful Cabin and Video.....Thanks for telling your story and thoughts and such as you went through the Building Process. I enjoyed watching the Tour video you guys did with Brooke and really enjoyed Hearing your story here too. I'll Be in touch soon.
Jay
Thank you, Brooke is a lot of fun and has helped and encouraged us a lot on this journey
Very nice job!
Thank you very much!
It's beautiful and inspiring! We're currently shopping for land in Arkansas. Great job!
Thank you!! I hope your land search goes smoothly
Nice work guys
Thank you and thanks for watching! 😊
Thats neato! Good job.
Thank you!!!
Love it. I have a plan for a 24x32 (with half loft) for a very similar experience. Several significant differences but the themes are the same. Simplicity. Independence. Economical.
Thanks for watching!!! That sounds exactly like our original plans but a pandemic made it shrink lol. Enjoy your build! What state will it be in?
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet I live in Maine but may build elsewhere. NH and WV are on my list.
Wow that's a very well done little cabin house. I like the kitchen shelves instead of cabinets. I've been building my weekend get-away cabin on 80 acres in TN and I am getting close to finishing out the interior after having milled some wood for it. Big plan is to build a larger off grid home there and rent my cabins out. Thanks for all the great ideas in your videos.
Thank you! It kind of gets into your blood doesn’t it
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet it does
Cute
Thanks!!
The cabin that is on the 26 acres I bought last year out by Paradise Michigan is 16‘ x 16‘ with a loft in it that can be used for a sleeping quarters. I stripped it down to a shell in November 2022 so I could rebuild it to suit us. We want to put a screened in porch on it at some point and I was going back-and-forth on whether to put it on the side or the front of the cabin. If I put it on the side, I would have to change the door opening which is not a problem but after seeing your place, I like the way it looks and also the steep pitched roof will not drop snow onto a roof with a lesser pitch to it and build up much faster. I think I’m going to borrow your idea.
Awesome! It was part of the inspiration for starting a channel in order to share ideas and what we’ve learned with others
Nice 😊 ✌🏼😎🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you!!
Looks great and very nice build, well done!
Thank you very much!
I just saw this video tonight. Love the look of the cabin. We are down in the thumb but dream of doing the same. I was wondering what color red that is.
Thanks for watching!! I honestly don’t remember the name of the color, they only had two options in red and it was the darker one.
Very nice sir, what i will be doing when i hit my life goals
Thank you!! It’s definitely worth it
Have you ever seen Friday the 13th? Lol 😊 looks awesome.
I’m pretty sure we saw it when we were younger but neither of us remember it. Might be a good thing. 😂. Thanks for watching!
🎄💚🎄 LIKED, WATCHED, COMMENTED, SUBSCRIBED 🎄💚🎄
Thank you very much!
I have land but building my dream alone as a disabled senior female veteran is overwhelming.
THANK YOU for your service!! Alone is definitely hard
Love it!. Any permiting or code issues in MI? I grew up in Michigan and am considering building a cabin somewhere up state.
It's hard to comment on permits and codes since every township is different. Our advise is to find an unzoned township. Thanks for watching!
What part of the northern Michigan lower peninsula do you have this cabin at. I live in the south west corner of the lower peninsula by the Indiana Michigan state line and am interested in moving up some where between Cadillac and big rapids or farther north when I retire. This style of cabin is something I could handle. I grew up in the state and have family in both peninsula and have fell in love with the northern part of the lower peninsula.
Close to the 45th parallel, thanks for watching!
Love the simple Cabin build that you have done. I live in the Grand Rapids area and have a similar dream of finding some land and doing just a simple Cabin build but what I am finding is a lot of townships want you to build at least 1000 square-foot home and they won’t allow you to build a pole barn first, so I am just curious if you might know of any townships in the lower peninsula that allow a smaller cabin of around 500 ft.² I just don’t want 1000 square-foot. The size of your cabin is perfect, do you know of any townships or counties in the lower peninsula that have more relaxed codes ? Thank you for any help. 🙂
Look for townships that are unzoned is the best bet
Great spot you have there. Thanks for sharing.
Are you both retired, or do you still commute to work from the cabin?
Thank you, we are both still working
Wonderful cabin thanks for the video from all the guys like me dreaming of doing something similar. What are the dimensions?
Thanks for watching!! The main cabin is 16x24, with a 8ft front porch and a 8ft back lean to.
Would have loved an inside tour...
Our video Full Time Off Grid In A Tiny House will give you the inside tour. 😁. Thanks for watching!
Mfer' has a 3 wheeler! 😮
Classic fun from when I was a teenager! Thanks for watching
Nice build! I'm getting ready to build mine. Did you use 2 x 6 for the floor joist?
2x8, 24 inch OC. Thanks for watching!
@A Different Kind Of Quiet Really enjoy watching your cabin videos. I've bought some land up near where I think you might be. In one of your other videos, you mentioned being near the 45th parallel.... My place is near Torch Lake/ Central Lake... are you close to me? We're thinking about doing a very similar type build. Really like your red metal siding! Looks great with the black trim and the stained wood accents. Can I ask where you bought the corrugated metal and what color code that red is?
Liked and subscribed! Keep the videos coming.... 🙂
That’s the general area, it’s worth the drive to me to go to Manton Metal, they’re Amish and really nice to deal with, it’s their darker red. Thanks for watching
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet Awesome....Thank you! I'll check Manton Metal out. Congratulations on crossing 1000 subscribers! 🙂
Beautiful cabin. I know you said it’s off grid. What does your refrigerator run on? Propane, or solar? Who makes it?
It is a DC (solar) fridge by Unique appliances. We did a deep dive on our appliances in our video Best Off Grid Power which also has several links in the description. Thanks for watching!
Very nice. What is the sq footage of the cabin?
The main part is 16x24 with an 8 ft enclosed porch. Thanks for watching!
I would be very interested in what you did to provide electric power to the building.

The acreage means more to me than the structure, don't get me wrong I would like a decent structure too, but not a mansion
I agree
May I ask how you were able to come across your piece of property…? Who did you use, etc…? I would appreciate any direct assistance to emulate your lifestyle. Please advise.
We watched Zillow and checked out a LOT of properties before finding this one. We contacted the listing realtor for permission to walk it and then made our offer the next day. Google Earth or even a mapping app gives you a good birds eye view of properties and can save you some drive time by checking out the area around it.
What are the dimensions of your cabin? It’s very nice by the way!
Thank you, 16x24 is the main cabin with an 8ft front porch and 8ft back lean to
Would you mind giving us a general idea of how much this build cost? I understand if you don't want to share, i'm just trying to create a budget for this
As best that I can remember the basic build was about $42 per Square Foot, but that was at the peak of C19. Thanks for watching!!
What size is your cabin. Nice place, enjoyed the video.
The main cabin is 16x24. Thanks for watching!!
@ADifferentKindofQuiet 8' porch? Great build, pole barn style seems very efficient and nice looking. If you wouldn't mind sharing, what were your ballpark costs of materials? I'm sure timeframe of your build sounds like it would have been more costly than now. Take care. Mid michigander here. :) Looking forward to your other vids. Cheers.
The best I can remember it was about 15K for the main build
What 3 wheeler is that you have?
1984 Honda big red 200
about how much did it cost?
About $42 per square foot for the initial cabin build. 16x24
how much was the build?
About $42 a square foot. 😊
I tell all my other outhouse users: you can use tissues instead of toilet paper. Switch and watch all the naysayers find out how much nicer it is on the butt than toilet paper. Also, no bathroom to clean and no expensive building and repair costs associated with modern bathrooms.
Thanks for the tip. And thanks for watching!
How much land please
10 acres
You should record when you're more awake
Thank you for your comment, we try to improve with each video.
Nice place but you sort of lost me at the beginning. Said it has been 40 years ago and you weren't doing UA-cam and then you said you bought the property in 2018. Fuzzy math or did I not hear you correctly. I actually went back 3 or 4 times to listen again.
Bought the land in 2018, built the cabin in 2020, so around 4 years, not 40. Thanks for watching
Call it a camp and don't tell people you live there full time. Off grid is kinda unlawful in michigan.
