We are Dan and Barb. We live a quiet simple life. Working with our hands, building, homesteading, gardening, off grid in Northern Michigan. Join us as we share building projects, gardening, cooking, foraging and adventures. 1 Th 4:11-12 That you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.
Real Life Off Grid Obstacles. Dealing With Refrigeration.
We live full time off grid and I love to cook. I could not live without some type of reliable refrigeration. We chose to purchase a Unique DC fridge and we've been happy with it for the most part. There are a few annoyances we deal with but it's a part of daily life. We've done videos in the past comparing our DC appliances with regular every day appliances. Check those out here...

How to Remove Y Bones In a Northern Pike. Easy Method!
Переглядів 98621 день тому
Northern Pike are a great fish to catch and eat. Most people don't like to eat them though due to the Y bones that are notoriously hard to remove. I will show you a simple method for removing the Y bones to get boneless pieces of Pike for your next fish dinner! It's easier than you think! You now have more options for pike than just pickling them to dissolve the bones. This is a great filet kni...
Elk Hunting At An Off Grid Ranch with Bonus Elk Recipe
Переглядів 25721 день тому
One year ago I went on my first guided hunt for elk. It was a great experience and I'd do it again! The ranch was off grid and in the middle of nowhere Colorado. It was quiet and had some awesome solar ability. Colorado has an average of 305 solar days per year! It makes our Michigan winters seem so gloomy. We got a tour of the ranch including the solar system that they use along with a Diesel ...

If you have ever wondered how to use those dried peppers/chili's that you see in Mexican markets then this is the episod...
Secure Off Grid Storage

Mice! They can get into almost anything. A small hole is all they need. They have destroyed so many things in our storage shed and on our property. Have you ever lit a Buddy Heater that had a mouse nest in it? Not fun! We recently bought a "one way" shipping container. We absolutely love it. Mice can't get inside and neither can a thief. We really needed some more secure storage and this fit th...

We recently sat down with Jay and Jen of the You Tube Channel "Off Grid with Jay and Jen". We had a great time visiting them here in Northern Michigan. We compared our cabins, off grid life and a few off grid rabbit trails along the way! We've both been living off grid for 4 years now. How To Save Tomato Seeds
Переглядів 2753 місяці тому
Tomatoes and cucumbers have a slimy layer that needs to be fermented in order to save the seeds. Just a quick video to show you how easy that can be. Seed saving can be very important for so many reasons. Just remember that hybrids are not good seeds to save. Start with a good heirloom or non hybrid tomato. How to Pressure Can Meat. Pressure Canning Made Easy! No Fridge or Freezer Needed!

No matter your reasons for stocking up and preparing for the future, canning meat is a great way to free up space in your freezer. Canning meat makes it shelf stable, no fridge or freezer needed. Small freezer and you found meat on sale? Can it. Frequent power outages and you're nervous about your freezer thawing? Can it. Off grid and you don't have a DC freezer? Can it. Dry Pour Concrete For the Outdoor Kitchen Remodel

We have been using an area near our storage shed for the outdoor kitchen. It was past time for some changes. A new floor was a priority. We have seen the dry pour concrete technique a few times and this was the logical option for this small space if we didn't want to have a costly delivery fee. With the new floor we were able to get the kitchen set up much nicer. Barb found a stainless steel ta...

We're Not Fighting This Battle Anymore!

We have been fighting this battle every year and this was the last straw. Deer damage can be devastating for homesteaders who rely on garden produce to get them through the whole year. After a severe "pruning" of every tasty morsel they wanted from the garden it's time to figure out this fencing. We chose the best deer prevention we could and did it as safely as possible to avoid any injuries t...

Our camper refrigerator will do that. The “fix” was a small battery operated fan made just for that type fridge to help air circulate and keep the temperature more even. I think we got ours at Camping World, but I’m sure Amazon would have them as well.
I will have to look into that. Thanks for the tip! 😊
I was just thinking of how many people wouldn't want the "nuisances" of your lifestyle. But oh how it beats shopping malls and sitting on the couch! Lol. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely! I think about that when these issues come up and I’ll take them any day over all those modern convenience’s. 😊
It can come from fridge being to full no air circulation. Also temp set to high and humidity.
It’s also complicated by the fact that it isn’t a frost free fridge. I forgot to mention that. Thanks for watching. 😊
Glenda and I just picked one up for our cabin that’s good information to know. And I’m wondering because there’s not much ice in the freezer but there’s a lot in the refrigerator if it has anything to do with the higher humidity that Michigan has. Because it seems like the refrigerator door would be opened and closed more often than the freezer door. And humid air has a tendency to stick to stuff and moisture freezes. Just a thought .
I forgot to mention that it’s not a frost free fridge which complicates things when used full time but I still think you’ll like it. 😊
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet I knew it was a frost tree when we bought it. I did a little research on it. But growing up as a kid, we never had a frost tree refrigerator even one that used AC current. And we had to defrost it every so often also. But like you said in the video, we won’t be there 24 seven 365 days a year. So I don’t think it will be that much of an inconvenience for us
"Root Cellar" Riight.... How much Dr. Pepper you got Down There... LOL Well done Guys! That Looks Awesoem!
If I stashed anything like that it wouldn’t be Dr Pepper! 🤢. There are a few store bought items down there but not much. It’s also getting reorganized in an upcoming video. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet No it was very well done guys. I was making a ADHD joke referring to the movie Blast from the Past. No reason that would have made sense without you knowing what my brain was thinking LOL
I assumed it was a joke but you’re correct…it was lost on me. 🤣
Always can use the bone meat to make fish stock and use stock for cappino
Yes! Using everything is always best. My chickens love the carcass also. 🐓 🐓
Nice, video and process , i would love to see a pike recipe too
I’ve had a few requests for that. Sounds like another video idea. 😊
Nice video :) theres still soo much meat on the Bone part. You could use it for fish Stock, or ive also seen people chopping whole pike in stripes similar to yours with the skin, then fry both sides on skin in a pan and if its cooked you can just pull the meat off the Bones and have zero waste. I have a video if u wanna see :)! Theres also a method to take the back filet first, then the tail filets and then just cut the side filets right at the bone, but also lots of meat are lost. Im a fan of using the entire Fish
I agree zero waste is best. That is why I make pet food with scraps from venison processing. My chickens typically get the fish carcasses. Nothing left after they get it but a little skin. 😁
@ADifferentKindofQuiet nice :) have a nice weekend
Wonderful camera work as well as the fillet
Thank you! They really are good eating. 😊
I just found my new method of cleaning pike. Great video
Thank you! A sharper knife would have been better. I keep trying different techniques but always go back to this one. 😊
I agree Northern Pike are just about as good as walleye. And the perch are pretty good too. BTW, that’s a nice Pike. Did you get it trolling?
They were trolling with planer boards with Bandits (deep walleye).
I would like to know how you cook Pike. I’ve never had it, but I’ve heard it’s delicious.
Might be the next video idea.😋😋😋
Looking forward to see how you cook this fish.
Sounds like the next video idea. 😋😋
Great teaching video. Thanks! Do you use the discards for anything?
Thank you and Yes, my chickens love it! There is nothing left but a little skin by the time they’re done with it. 🐓🐓
So glad to have you guys back! Love the warmth of your videos and look forward to more content.
Thanks for the encouragement! I really missed not doing them. I’m glad to be back. 😊
We make Liver and Heart treats for the Pups......Makes ya feel good to use as much as possible of the animal. I'm still looking at my Jar of Elk sitting in the pantry....I want to make sure I appreciate it with a special meal. =) Thanks for showing us the ranch and sharing your experience there. Good luck to you both this deer season, If you ever need a hand with a deer don't be afraid to call me.
It sure was a fun hunt. You’ll enjoy that meat when you do eat it. 😊
Another great video. It felt like I was sitting in the kitchen with you while you were making dinner. I enjoyed hearing all about your hunt and your experience with the ranch. Congratulations to Dan on that Pike! I’ve never caught one, but I hope to someday.
It sure was a fun time. I’d do it again no question. Thanks again for the encouragement. 😊
Yep, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado have some pretty good views too. It leaves you with some pretty good memories to share and a great experience. It looks like you guys didn’t do too bad fishing also. And hopefully you know a few more fishing holes.
Fishing has been slow but still good to be out there. Having a great time with friends as well. 😊
Looks delicious! Have fun fishing this weekend!
Thank you! So far it’s been really cold and the fishing is slow but we are still enjoying it. 😀

Certified yapper for sure
do you need a permit in michigan for offgrid cabin?
Generally yes but most townships will let you build something 200 sq ft or less without one.
How many acres do you have? Do you get to enjoy your property in the winter?
This cabin is on 80 acres. It’s not easily accessible in winter without a snowmobile. Thanks for watching! 😊
N. Michigan update: I started tapping in January and stopped in April. Longest season ever and huge coloection and it produced the most robust and flavorful syrup I've ever produced. Definitely a banner year
I agree! We missed the early start but it was still the longest my buckets have ever been out. Thanks for watching! 😊
Insulation in there
We talked about it but since winter accessibility is an issue it has only been used in milder weather. Thanks for watching! 😊

Sure is
Finally a real person living offgrid with realistic appliances and use good power management to keep the system running.😊
Thank you for the encouragement! One of the reasons we started this channel was to share what we learned along the way. 😊
Those are indeed some very nice, sturdy shelves.
It looks like you have plenty of peppers in your garden. Could you use those to make the sauce?
The flavor completely changes once the pepper is dried. I have tons of recipes where I use my fresh peppers and I also freeze some for later. I would like to learn how to dry them so I could use them in these types of recipes. 😊
Great video! I really enjoy watching you and I learn a lot, thank you. I am curious how hot your enchilada sauce is because I’m quite the sissy when it comes to spices, but I love flavor.
It wasn’t hot at all and had great flavor! It certainly smelled spicy but it really wasn’t. 😊
Can you use the seeds from the dried peppers to plant new peppers in the spring?
I hadn’t thought about that. I’m not sure on the entire process but I should try it. 😊
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet as long as they weren’t cooked and we’re just dried out it seems like they would be OK, but I don’t know the answer to that
a) make sure they are not hybrids, as their seeds are often not true-breeders. b) warm soil/air... peppers, like tomatoes, need warm soil to germinate...> 55F ( > 50F for most tomatoes) c) Living at the 45th parallel in Western Oregon, we have to start them indoors or in a green house with warmed soil (either elec-pads or perhaps circulating warm water in tubes in starter beds.) Maybe a hot/active compost layer below the starts, but you have to keep decomp gasses off the roots (that will slow/stop growth) so maybe start them in a cloche over cut green cover crop mulch w/lots of active decomp bacteria added. Just a few thoughts.
Very nice. That was a lot of hard work! Congratulations!
Thank you! It was worth every second. 😊
48 volts, 49 volts, whatever it takes... 😁
are you running a vent hood of any kind ? i just got that stove not hooked up yet
No, we don’t have a vent hood. I really like this stove though…I hope you like yours. 😊
Would you be willing to give the name of the company? I am up by the 45th parallel in the mitten.

money well spent in the eyes of a fellow off gridder. Rodent free storage.....Love it
Now comes the organization part.. 😂
@Dan & @Jay So much experience talking on that porch. Viewers need to slow down and listen to this one. From solar to water to plain common sense.
Thank you! I think there is so much more to cover. Maybe we’ll do another one. 😊
We’re down here in Alabama…have two older teens and a piece of property that’s paid off. Looking ahead to getting out of the burbs…this all seems like an option for my husband and I. Y’all are answering a lot of questions we’ve had. I like the idea of steel for the siding on a cabin. Low maintenance as we age, seems great. We’ve got the issue of HEAT down here 9 months out of the year. Wondering if a mini split or two would keep us consistently cool? Thanks for all you do. Dave, Brooke, Jay, Jen and now you two are added to my list of folks to be thankful for! 🙏🏻
I’m so glad we answered some of your questions. We started this journey after our kids were grown and out of the house so it’s not too late! I wish I had some experience with the heat issue but I can sure tell you how to deal with the cold…🤣. You’ll learn as you go and you should make decisions that work best for you. Everything isn’t cookie cutter the same for everyone. I hope it all goes well for you and thank you for the encouragement. 😊
Fellow Michigander as well. Always enjoy your videos. Started a very similar build in 2019. Just getting to finishing it up now. Kinda funny to see how many people that have never done something like this like my self have also started this venture in 2019/2020
Thank you for the encouragement. I hope your build gets done soon! 😊
Love your channel Barb. Your house is beautiful and very cozy. What more does one need? Just wanted to make you aware of a “crockpot” method you can use without added electricity in your off-grid situation. It’s called “retained heat cooking”, “hatbox cooking” etc. There are products one can buy like the “Wonderbag” which used to sell on Amazon. There are also thermos-type products. You can easily make your own too. The premise is that you heat up your dish, let’s say it’s a stew, or things you would use a crockpot for. Heat to boiling for a few minutes on the stove (in a cast-iron dutch oven) and then put the lid on and put the pot into your “hatbox cooker”. If homemade, it can be as simple as a laundry basket with a quilt inside. Put the pot in there, cover it up nicely, and leave for the day. It does a remarkable job. If you have not heard of it, please look into this as I think you will love it. Blessings.
I have seen those but I don’t have one. Thanks for the suggestion and the encouragement. 😊
Suggestions on where in the UP to live off grid, in regards to building codes?
The more remote the better. Look for unzoned townships. They should have all the info on their township websites.
I sure do miss the UP. I learned to Salmon fish there. The August Paradise Blueberry Festival is great and Taquamenon Falls is a must see. Thanks for the video.
We haven’t been to the Blueberry Festival yet but we really want to! Thanks for watching. 😊
@@ADifferentKindofQuiet Don't miss out on the All you can eat Blueberry Pancake Breakfast at the church bldg on Lake Superior! 😊

Nice investment! Going to feel good leaving home and not worry about criminals "shopping" on your property! I had a break-in once that was heartbreaking. Worked out of state a lot back then. You're smart to get this now. God bless
We’re already enjoying it. We still have some organizing to do but it’s getting there. 😊

I see you pulled the trigger on it. It’s absolutely the best $4000 You could’ve spent for a secure storage. That’s why we got ours. There’s not much in thievery out here at our remote off grid property but it’s always nice to know that it’s secure, waterproof, mouse proof, and pretty much people proof. You will like it.
I’m sure we will. Now for the organization. 😂
Definitely looks worth it!
Great video title! 😂
Thanks! Those mice are destroying everything. Hopefully this helps. So far so good. 😊
